BECKER, JOSEPH, Age 97 of Tryon, NC, passed away Friday, August 6, 1999 at his home. He was the son of the late Vaclav and Mary Becker. He was the retired chief of the Second Battalion in Detroit, MI Fire Department; and was in fact the oldest living Detroit Fireman. He was also a WW I veteran having served in the US Navy. He moved to Tryon in the late 1960's from Farmington, MI after a long career in the fire department and had been a member of the Tryon Chess Club, and was an avid fisherman. He was the husband of Rosslyn Harrington Becker who died 1998. Mr. Becker is survived by his children: one son, Robert Becker of Curran, MI. Two daughters, Isobel Maynard and Judith Becker, both of Tryon, NC. In addition he left 6 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, August 10, 1999 in Polk Memorial Gardens in Columbus, NC with Dr. Joseph L. Emery officiating. The family will receive visitors at the home of Isobel Maynard on Peniel Road, immediately following the graveside service. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, 421 N.
