FOLEY, MARY MAGDELENA BESLOCK SPARGO Aunt Mary died at her home at Chelsea Retirement Community on August 10, 1999. She was born on May 23, 1899, in Detroit, MI, the daughter of Gottfried and Maria Beslock. She married Arthur Abraham Spargo in 1924 and was widowed in 1935. In 1941, she married Robert Sheridan Foley, who died in 1988. Also preceding her in death were her parents and three brothers, Emil, Leo and John Christian. Aunt Mary graduated from Western High School in Detroit and went to work for the telephone company. It was her assistant supervisor who encouraged her to go on to college instead of taking a promotion with the company. She attended and graduated from Martindale Normal School and began her teaching career. She taught elementary school social studies at Columbian, Cheney, Stephens and Lingeman elementary schools in Detroit. In 1938, Aunt Mary graduated from Wayne State University and continued to teach for a total of 38 years before retiring in 1957. Uncle Bob Foley's work with Western Electric then took them on ten month assignments to Ketchikan, Alaska; Sausalito, California; Oregon, and Marquette and Escanaba Michigan. They maintained a home in Detroit until Uncle Bob retired, and then they moved to their cottage at Higgins Lake. This was their base for traveling through the mid-west and for entertaining their many friends. They also had a home in Tucson, Arizona, where they headquartered for twenty winters. From Tucson, they traveled extensively throughout the Southwest. Aunt Mary always lived every moment to its fullest. She traveled to England, France, and Germany by herself in 1936 and visited her cousins in Gimbinen. She and Uncle Bob traveled with the Wally Byam Caravan Club in their Airstream throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. They visited Ireland, England and Western Europe in 1964. Aunt Mary was always active in church, the United Church of Christ, and with her "girls club". She was a member of the American Association of University Women and numerous school affiliated groups. She was always a volunteer in the mobile home park in Tucson and was also involved in the Higgins Lake Civic Association. She and Uncle Bob enjoyed many social events with their extended family, their friends and the Elks Club. It was Aunt Mary who saved the family photos and told us family stories so that we would remember our heritage. Aunt Mary's 100th birthday party in May of this year was a wonderful and loving extravaganza entirely arranged and executed by her nursing staff at Chelsea Retirement Community. The staff presented her with a basket of 100 pink Vivaldi roses, and Aunt Mary was resplendent in a gorgeous, sequined dress also presented to her by staff. It was a great party. Aunt Mary is survived by her niece, Caroline Beslock Smith, and Carol's husband, Dean; their daughter, Leslie Christian Blum and her husband, John; their sons Marc Carmi Smith and his wife Deborah Roberti; and Johnathan Beslock Smith; and by her great-great nieces Courtney Marie, Ashley Christian, and Sarah Lynn Blum. Aunt Mary is also survived by Uncle Bob's niece, Ilene Brinker McNally and her children: Colleen and Gary Macaddino, Mary and Joe Contreras, Jeannette and Randy Tazalaar, Donna and Jerry Schwarzer, Patrick McNally and Barbara McNally; and by nine great-great nieces and nephews. A celebration af Aunt Mary's life for family and friends will be held on September 12, 1999, at 2 p.m., in the Kresge Chapel at the Chelsea Retirement Community, 801 West Middle Street, Chelsea, MI. The Reverend Marsha Woolley will preside.
