Mrs. Jane Rae Muzyl
Mrs. Jane Rae Muzyl, 69 of Gaylord died Saturday, August 30, 2003. Mrs. Muzyl was born May 23, 1934 to Raymond and Cecilia Fox in Horton Bay, upstairs in the Red Fox Inn, owned by her paternal grandparents. The family lived in Petoskey for a short time before moving to Boyne City. When Jane was 13 they moved to Gaylord. She graduated with academic honors from Gaylord High School in 1952. After graduation she worked as a secretary for the Michigan State Liquor Control Commission. On January 25, 1957 she married Bruno Muzyl. The couple shared 46 years of a solid trusting marriage. Jane was a loyal wife and mother with a kind, gentle and caring spirit. She played the piano, loved to bowl, enjoyed reading, knitted beautiful afghans and sweaters and was a great cook. She is survived by her husband, Bruno; daughters, Gail (Scott) Katke of Saline, Jackie Muzyl of Highland, Marilyn (Dan) Michael of Lake Orion; 3 grandchildren, William, Matthew and Jack; sister, Sue Burns of Grand Rapids. She was preceded in death by her parents Raymond & Cecilia (Sheaffer) Fox. Memorial services were held on Wednesday, September 3, 2003 at 12:00 PM from the Nelson Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jane Muzyl Memorial Fund through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mr. Clinton W. Ogden
Clinton W. Ogden, age 27 of Indian River died Saturday, July 26th at Cheboygan Memorial Hospital. Clinton was born on August 25, 1975 in Petoskey, MI., and after living in Florida for a few years, moved back to the Wolverine area in 1988. He graduated from Wolverine High School in 1994. He enjoyed water skiing, boating, snowmobile riding, and doing electrical work, which he did with his grandfather for 3-4 years. He had also built himself 2 homes, including his current home. In April of 1998 in Cheboygan he married the former Amy McCauley. Funeral services will be held on Weds., July 30th at 3:00 pm from the Nelson Funeral Home, Inc. 135 N. Center St., Gaylord, MI., Zach Gardener officiating. Visitation at the funeral home will be on Tuesday from 2-8 p.m, and on Weds. beginning at 2:00 pm. Interment will be in Silver Lake cemetery in Wolverine. He is survived by his wife, Amy; three children, Clinton Jr., Corbin, & Cooper; his parents, Curt (Deb) Ogden of Wolverine; brother Chris (Ronda) Ogden of Wolverine; grandmother RoseEdna Babcock of Wolverine; and grandparents Charles & June Ogden of Florida. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews; mother & father-in-law, Lyle & Sharon McCauley; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Dana, Scott, Nathan, Amanda, and Casey McCauley. Memorial contributions may be made to the children of Clinton Ogden through the Nelson Funeral Home, Inc. 135 N. Center St. Gaylord, MI. 49735.

Mr. Alfred E. O’Rourke
Mr. Alfred E. O’Rourke, 69 of Gaylord died Friday, August 15, 2003. Mr. O’Rourke, a lifetime Gaylord resident, was born in Sandusky, MI on December 31, 1933, the son of Joseph & Mabel O’Rourke. Mr. O’Rourke served in the United States Army. He worked at Nu-Way Supply for 36 years, retiring in 1995. He attended St. Mary Cathedral and was a member of and past president of the Gaylord F.O.E. and the National Rifle Association. He loved “playing farmer” with his John Deere tractor, enjoyed deer hunting and was an avid bowler. Most importantly he loved his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Juanita; daughter, Mary Ann Thomas of Johannesburg, Connie (John) Nelson of Gaylord; step-children, Cherie Buckler of Colorado, Carol Tobias of Alaska, Terry (Patsy) Tobias of Gaylord, Larry Tobias of Frederic, Sharolyn (Mike) Coonrod of Frederic, Lorelei (Mike) Hunt of Gaylord, Joseph (Hilda) Tazelaar of Gaylord, Donald (Lori) Hanson of North Carolina; 31 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers & sisters, Virgil (Patricia) O’Rourke of Redford, Joseph “Ed” (Mae) O’Rourke of Vanderbilt, Lorena (Dave) Balconi of Gladwin, Alice Butler of Gaylord, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his step-son Jerry Tobias. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Tuesday, August 19, 2003 at 11 AM from St. Mary Cathedral, Rev. John McCracken, officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection cemetery in Vanderbilt. A rosary will be offered Monday afternoon at 3:30 PM and an Eagles Lodge memorial service Monday evening at 6:30 PM. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Monday from 2-9 PM and on Tuesday at the church beginning at 10 AM. Memorial contributions may be made to the athletic departments of Johannesburg Lewiston School, St. Mary Cathedral Schools and Gaylord High School.

Mr. Robert W.” Bob” Anderson
Robert W.” Bob” Anderson, 66 of Lewiston died Wednesday, November 12, 2003 at Tendercare in Gaylord. Mr. Anderson was born in Reynoldsburg, OH on July 29, 1937. He was raised in Livonia and moved to Lewiston in 1990 from California. He was a meat cutter at Glen’s Market in Lewiston retiring in 1999. He served in the United States Navy and was a member of the Lewiston American Legion Post #198 and the First Baptist Church of Lewiston. Mr. Anderson is survived by his wife, Donna; his children, Al (Ruth) Keller of Lewiston, Diane Nerkowski of California, Michael (Melinda) Keller of Flint, Dennis Keller of Flint; 11 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; brother, John (Judy) Anderson of Lake Orion. Mr. Anderson was preceded in death by his son Steven in 1986 and his brother Jerry in 2002. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2003 at 2:00 PM from the First Baptist Church in Lewiston, Pastor Donald Evilsizer, officiating. Friends may call at the church on Saturday beginning at 1 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Lewiston through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Ms. Kathleen Elizabeth Avery
Kathleen Elizabeth Avery, age 47 of Gaylord died Monday, October 6, 2003 at McReynolds Hall. Kathy was born on Aug. 13, 1956 in Grayling and spent her life in Gaylord. She was a loving part of the community where everyone knew her, and she will be greatly missed. She is survived by her daughter, Krystal; her daughter’s father, Kent Avery; brothers and sister, John Schotte, of Arkansas, Sandra Barber of Frederic, Donald Schotte of Gaylord, Frederick Schotte of Colorado; her mother, Cecelia (Jaruzel) Schotte of Gaylord. She was preceded in death by her father Albert Schotte. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 10, 2003, at 11:00 AM from St. Mary Cathedral, Rev. John McCracken, officiating. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Thursday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM., and at the church on Friday beginning at 10:00 AM. St. Mary Altar Rosary Society will offer a rosary Thursday afternoon at 3 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the family or to Hospice of Michigan, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Diane Chernoff
Diane Chernoff, 53 of Shelby Township died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003. Beloved wife of the late Ralph, dear mother of Kristi (Jason) Chernoff Bowman & Brian Chernoff, daughter of George & Delores Radich, sister of Karen Johnson & James Radich. Mr. Sherman E. Clark, Jr.
Mr. Sherman E. Clark, 82 of Gaylord died Thursday, November 20, 2003 at his home. Mr. Clark was born October 21, 1921 in Detroit. He graduated from Eastern High School in Detroit in 1939, Michigan State College in 1943 and Fordham University Law School in 1952. He served in the United States Army during World War II (Dec 1942 – April 1946) as a field artillery observation pilot. He was employed as a special agent for the FBI from 1947 – 1955. He later worked for Chrysler Corporation as a personnel manager from 1955 until his retirement in 1980. During the fall of 1980 he moved to Gaylord from Fraser. On April 8, 1955 in McLean, Virginia he married the former Shirley Lowe. She preceded him in death on October 13, 1997. Mr. Clark was a lifetime member of the Masonic Order and a member and former treasurer of the Northland Sportsmen’s Club. He served 4 years as a member of the Otsego County Board of Canvassers and was a member of the Bar Association in the states of New York and Michigan. Mr. Clark played the French horn with various bands including The Warren Community Band, The Moslem Temple Shrine Band, The Gaylord Community Band and the Charlevoix Community Band. He enjoyed golf, music and doing the New York Times crossword puzzles. He was an avid reader and also loved the outdoors and working in his yard. Mr. Clark is survived by his children, Nancy Bower of Grand Rapids, Marcia (Tom) Sharky of Apple Valley, CA, Judy (Dave) Bouley of Grand Rapids, Kris (Mike) Polus of Gaylord; 9 grandchildren, Meagan, Trisha, Dyanna, Krissy, Dan, Jeff, Michelle, Katie and Jessie. Along with his wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Hope Brey, in 2001.FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Monday, November 24, 2003 at 12:30 PM from the Nelson Funeral Home, Rev. Joe Sereno, officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 1-4 PM and on Monday beginning at 11:30 am. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan or to the American Cancer Society through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Ms. Tacy E. Davis
Tacy E. Davis, 87 of Detroit, and formerly of Gaylord, died Saturday, November 22, 2003. Tacy was born in Gaylord on July 22, 1916. She was raised in Gaylord, graduated from Gaylord High School, and later moved to Detroit in 1942. Tacy worked on the assembly line for General Motors Corporation, retiring in 1979. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, picking berries, making pies, and doing yard work. Ms. Davis was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Blanche Davis; brother, Agustus Davis; sisters, Mary House and Adelia Kreger. She is survived by her sister, Lila Matuszek; 18 nieces and nephews; many great-nieces and nephews; and close friend Henry Tupaj of Detroit. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at 1 p.m. from the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord, Rev. James Brammer officiating. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord will be held on Monday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., and on Tuesday beginning at 10 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimers Association, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, 135 N. Center, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Mr. William H. “Doc” Davis
William H. “Doc” Davis, 76 of Gaylord died Tuesday, November 11, 2003. Mr. Davis was born in Kentucky on October 1, 1927. He served in the United States Air Force for 22 years and 28 days, retiring in 1971 as Master Sergeant. Mr. Davis had worked at Glens Market for several years and was a bus driver for the Otsego County bus system. He was a member of the Eagles and enjoyed traveling. Mr. Davis is survived by his wife of 42 years, June; daughter, Trudy (retired Master Sergeant Gary) Reetz of Colorado; son, David (Gwen) Davis of California; grandchildren, Lieutenant Kimberly (Scott) Johnston, Brian Reetz, Lindsey Davis; half sister, Pat Sajdak & family of Grayling; cousin, Helen Inghram & family. Memorial will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2003 at 12 Noon from the Nelson Funeral Home. Otsego County Veterans Honor Guard will offer a salute immediately following memorial. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Friday, November 14, 2003, from 4 to 8 PM and on Saturday beginning at 11 AM. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan or the American Heart Association, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Vera J. Drzewiecki
Vera J. Drzewiecki, 77 of Gaylord died Saturday, October 4, 2003 at Otsego Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Drzewiecki was born October 22, 1925 in Standish and was raised in Arenac County. She was the youngest of 14 children. While living in Standish she married Walter Drzewiecki. The couple farmed in Pinconning before moving to Gaylord in 1948, when they began Gaylord Feed and Grain. In 1966, along with Joseph & Genevieve Burzynski they establish Alpine Oil. In 1982 the two companies merged. Mrs. Drzewiecki was an excellent seamstress and a great cook. She was very creative, quick witted and enjoyed traveling extensively. She is survived by her husband, Walter; daughter, Joanne (Bob) Zayko of Muskegon; sons, Walter Jr. (Ann) of Gaylord, Randy (Mary) of Gaylord; grandchildren, Andrea (Daniel) Gill, Stephen Zayko, Matthew (Kristine) Zayko, Jeffery (Tracy) Drzewiecki, Dawn Drzewiecki, Neil Drzewiecki, Todd (Sandie) Drzewiecki, Kim (Bruce) Keskine and Melani (Bruce) Youngs; great-grandchildren, Samuel, Henry, Phoebe, Taylor, Lauren, Kylee, Anthony and Maria; many nieces and nephews. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 2003 at 11 AM from St. Mary Cathedral, Rev. John McCracken, officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview cemetery. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Monday from 1-4 & 6-8 PM and on Tuesday at the church beginning at 10 AM. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Cathedral’s “Faith in the Future” building campaign, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Lucille Marie (Bartkowiak) Eaton
Lucille Eaton passed away on Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at her daughter and son-in-law's home in Gaylord after many years of struggling with Alzheimer's disease. Born in South Bend, IN on November 28,1916 to Stanislaw and MaryJanna Bartkowiak, Lucille was the 5th of 11 children. She is survived by brother Joseph Bartkowiak of South Bend, IN., and sisters Dorothy Chrzan of Sebring, FL., Theresa Liwosz, and Mary Catherine Andrzejewski, both of South Bend, IN. Lucille married Charles Alva Eaton of Plymouth, IN. in 1934 and settled in South Bend, IN. Together they owned and operated "Chucks Van Buren" a small family grocery store. Their union produced two children, Robert Lee Eaton, and Barbara Jean Eaton Goszczynski. Lucille survived her husband's death in 1982, son's death in 1985, and grandson Keith Eaton's death in 1991. Lucille moved from South Bend, IN. to her daughter's home in Gaylord in 1996 at the onset of symptoms ofAlzheimer's disease. She has been a loving and loved member of a large and extended family, and community. She is survived by daughter Barbara and son-in law Clement J. Goszczynski, and eight surviving grandchildren, their spouses and families, Julia Goszczynski Hugel and Dieter Hugel of New Orleans, LA., Charlene Ann Goszczynski of Gaylord, Glen and Tamara Aldred Goszczynski of Walled Lake, MI., Patricia Goszczynski Spear and Charles Spear of Waterford, MI., Roberta Eaton Palmer and Robert Palmer of Knoxville.TN., Douglas and Lisa Mitchell Eaton of South Bend, IN., John and Sheryl Schaffer Eaton of Phoenix, AZ., and Scott and Kimberly Eaton of Oceola, IN. Lucille is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren, two with spouses, and 5 great-great-grandchildren (1 deceased). Lucille regularly attended the Otsego Haus senior day care center in Gaylord since 2000, and was a parishioner of St. Mary Catholic Church. Prior to her illness, she was an accomplished china painter, and enjoyed coin collecting, playing cards, and traveling to Florida each winter. Both Lucille and husband Charles were active in the Knights of Columbus organization prior to his death, and Lucille was active as a Eucharistic minister at Holy Cross Church in South Bend, IN., prior to her move to Gaylord. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, Nov. 24, 2003 at 11 a.m. from St. Mary Cathedral. Interment will be at the Riverview cemetery in South Bend, IN. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be directed to the Alzheimer's Association of Northern Michigan, the Otsego Haus, Hospice of Michigan, or St. Mary Catholic Church in Gaylord, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Mr. Max D. Evans
Max D. Evans, 64 of Gaylord died Monday, November 10, 2003 at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. Mr. Evans was born in Pontiac on July 20, 1939 and was raised in Union Lake. While living in Union Lake he was the manager of the local bowling alley. In 1989 he moved to the Gaylord area. He worked at the Gaylord Holiday for a short time and had been working in purchasing at Treetops until his retirement last September. He was an avid golfer and bowler. Mr. Evans is survived by his wife, Carrol; his children, Vincent Grabowski of Washington, Laura (Byron) Cooley of Waterford, and Jody Evans of Gaylord; 4 grandchildren, Tanya, Justin, Joshua, and Jessica; 2 sisters, Marilyn (Tom) Broders of Evart and JoAnne (Rick) Bates of Gaylord; niece and nephews, Scott (Shana) Broders, Tammy Bates, and Ted Bates. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Wednesday (Nov. 12) from 3-8 PM.

Mr. Gordon Everett
Gordon Gray Everett, 84, died peacefully at his home in Gaylord, November 7, 2003 surrounded by his family who loved him dearly. He was born in Southfield Twp. on April 13, 1919 to Clarence and Sarah (Gray) Everett. He and Marlene (Blake) Johnson were married in Gaylord on Dec. 16, 1960. Gordon is survived by his wife, Marlene Everett; two sons, Gary Everett and Douglas (Sherry) Johnson; one daughter, Janice (Johnson) Werbish (Al); nine wonderful grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Gordon graduated from Redford High School and enlisted in the U. S. Air Force where he served in the Air Transport Command during WWII. He received an honorable discharge after contracting TB while serving in Germany. He spent the following year at the TB Sanitarium in Gaylord, followed by a year home in bed in Tawas City. Moving to Gaylord from Tawas City in 1960 he started publishing The Northern Star Advertiser. This was followed by Weeklies, Inc., Central Printing, A.P.S. and A.P.S. Mini Warehouse, and Mid-North Printing (now owned by son Doug and his wife Sherry). Gordon is a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Port Salerno, Florida where he and his wife have spent their last eighteen winters. Gordon is a member of the Gaylord Elks Lodge, Lifetime member of Otsego County Chamber of Commerce and the D.A.V. He served as former president and board member of Otsego memorial Hospital board and the Otsego County Fair board. Along with his wife they were 4-H leaders for many years. He served as president and was an active member of the Shopping Guides of Michigan, was commodore of the Hidden Harbour Boat Club in Stuart, Florida and Charter member of the Tawas Bay Yacht Club. Gordon was instrumental in helping establish the Otsego County Museum by donating his former Store building on Main Street. He loved Gaylord and was proud of the Alpine Theme, which he spearheaded in the early 1960’s. After retirement, Gordon and his wife traveled both by boat and motor home. Gordon was an avid hunter and a lifetime member of the McGinn Hunt Club in Curran, MI. Sailing was his real love and he spent many summers sailing in North Channel and two years on the island of Mallorca, Spain. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert; and daughter, Cynthia Adams. Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, November 13, 2003, at 11 AM at Otsego Club Resort in Gaylord, The Reverend Mary McClure officiating. Family and friends may begin gathering at the resort at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Otsego County Historical Museum, Otsego County Fair Board or Hospice of Michigan, through the Nelson Funeral Home.
