Mrs. Rhoda Crandell
Rhoda Crandell, 75, of Gaylord, died Monday Jan. 5, 2004 at Ingham Regional Medical Center in Lansing. Mrs. Crandell was born Oct. 14, 1928 in Alma and moved to Johannesburg in 1969 from Lansing. She had been employed by the Otsego County Courthouse for 26 years, retiring in 1999. She was a longtime member of the Michigan Probate and Juvenile Registrars Association. Mrs. Crandell enjoyed cross-stitch, knitting, skiing and camping, and faithfully attended water exercise classes. "She lived and breathed for her kids and grandkids." On Dec. 14, 1946 in Ithaca she married Stewart Crandell, who preceded her in death on Nov. 8, 1998. Services will be held on Friday, Jan. 9 at 1 p.m. from the Nelson Funeral Home. The family will begin gathering at the funeral home Friday at 11 a.m. Mrs. Crandell is survived by David (Clandia) of Novi; Cheri Struble of Lansing; Marti (Larry) Beck of Corpus Christi, Texas; Laura (Joe) Wixon of Lansing; Rob (Mary Sawyer) Crandell of Traverse City; Gregg (Diane) Crandell of Lansing; Lisa Crandell (Michael Hill) of Italy. She is survived by 13 grandchildren: Christopher and Jeffrey Struble; Zach and Amber Fales; Brett, Ryan and Scott Wixon; Jordan, Collin and Carson Crandell; Jacob Crandell; Brett Higgins; and Eliana Crandell Hill. She is also survived by one sister, Emily (Albert) Moore of St. Louis, Mo.

Mr. Karl T. David
Karl T. David, Sr., 71 of Gaylord, went to be with Our Lord on Saturday, December 13, 2003. Karl “Rudy” was born in Detroit on October 8, 1932 to Tanas George & krescenthia (Weiss) David. He attended St. Charles Elementary School in Detroit and Assumption High School in Canada. He later moved to Flint where he spent his senior high school year. He graduated in 1950 from St. Mike’s in Flint. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving from 1952 until 1854. He was discharged as a Corporal. He then attended Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant where he met his wife Geraldine: Gerry” on Valentine’s Day. On February 2, 1957 they were the first couple to be married in the new church of St. Joseph parish in West Branch. Karl graduated from Central Michigan University with a major in social work. In 1961 he became Director of the Department of Social Services for 3 counties (Montmorency, Crawford and Otsego). He, his wife and, 3 children, thus far, moved to Gaylord. The family lived an active community life for many years. Karl and his wife had 3 more children, which brought the total to 6 children, all of whom graduated with college degrees. The family continued to grow with the addition of 7 grandchildren. Karl loved to help people and animals, enjoyed plying his hundreds of music tapes and records and also enjoyed bowling. He volunteered for many community projects and activities. Karl and his wife Gerry loved to dance (especially the polka) at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Karl loved the people of the Gaylord community and enjoyed walks through the area stores to tell people his jokes. All, especially his family, his dog Mugsy, his neighbor Skip and his many other special friends, will sadly miss him. Karl is at peace with Our God. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at 11:00 AM from St. Mary Cathedral, Rev. John McCracken, officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection cemetery in Gaylord. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Tuesday from 3-5 & 7-9 PM and at the church on Wednesday beginning at 10 AM. A rosary will be offered Tuesday evening at 7 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Cathedral Building Fund, or to the Otsego County Animal Shelter, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Ms. Tacy E. Davis
Tacy E. Davis, 87 of Detroit, and formerly of Gaylord, died Saturday, November 22, 2003. Tacy was born in Gaylord on July 22, 1916. She was raised in Gaylord, graduated from Gaylord High School, and later moved to Detroit in 1942. Tacy worked on the assembly line for General Motors Corporation, retiring in 1979. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, picking berries, making pies, and doing yard work. Ms. Davis was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Blanche Davis; brother, Agustus Davis; sisters, Mary House and Adelia Kreger. She is survived by her sister, Lila Matuszek; 18 nieces and nephews; many great-nieces and nephews; and close friend Henry Tupaj of Detroit. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at 1 p.m. from the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord, Rev. James Brammer officiating. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord will be held on Monday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., and on Tuesday beginning at 10 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimers Association, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, 135 N. Center, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Mrs. MaryRose Drumm
MaryRose Drumm, 77, died Saturday, Dec. 20 at Hospice House in Cheboygan. MaryRose was born June 27, 1926 in Oakland County, the daughter of John and Mary Jane Ver (Harris) Drumm. She graduated from Rochester High School in 1947. In May of 1951, she entered the U.S. Army serving our country during the Korean War. MaryRose also served our country in the U.S. Air Force Reserves and was honorably discharged from that branch of service in February of 1963 upon reaching the rank of staff sergeant. Upon completion of her military career, she worked in a plastics factory in the Rochester Hills area. At that time she met Frank Ford who would become her partner for life. The two moved up north, making their home in Wolverine. In 1999, she moved to Alpine Haus Apartments in Gaylord where she made many wonderful friends. MaryRose was a proud member of American Legion Post No. 122 and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, both in Wolverine. She also loved gardening and flowers. She is survived by one sister, Jessie of Texas; several nieces and nephews; and special friends Marv and Charly Duchene of Wolverine. She was preceded in death by her partner, Frank Ford, her parents, and four brothers and sister. Private services will be held at Alpine Haus Apartments, with interment next spring at Silver Lake cemetery in Wolverine, with the Robert Vroman American Legion Post No. 122 performing military honors. Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of the Straits, Cheboygan, through Nelson Funeral Home, PO Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Mrs. Lucille Marie (Bartkowiak) Eaton
Lucille Eaton passed away on Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at her daughter and son-in-law's home in Gaylord after many years of struggling with Alzheimer's disease. Born in South Bend, IN on November 28,1916 to Stanislaw and MaryJanna Bartkowiak, Lucille was the 5th of 11 children. She is survived by brother Joseph Bartkowiak of South Bend, IN., and sisters Dorothy Chrzan of Sebring, FL., Theresa Liwosz, and Mary Catherine Andrzejewski, both of South Bend, IN. Lucille married Charles Alva Eaton of Plymouth, IN. in 1934 and settled in South Bend, IN. Together they owned and operated "Chucks Van Buren" a small family grocery store. Their union produced two children, Robert Lee Eaton, and Barbara Jean Eaton Goszczynski. Lucille survived her husband's death in 1982, son's death in 1985, and grandson Keith Eaton's death in 1991. Lucille moved from South Bend, IN. to her daughter's home in Gaylord in 1996 at the onset of symptoms ofAlzheimer's disease. She has been a loving and loved member of a large and extended family, and community. She is survived by daughter Barbara and son-in law Clement J. Goszczynski, and eight surviving grandchildren, their spouses and families, Julia Goszczynski Hugel and Dieter Hugel of New Orleans, LA., Charlene Ann Goszczynski of Gaylord, Glen and Tamara Aldred Goszczynski of Walled Lake, MI., Patricia Goszczynski Spear and Charles Spear of Waterford, MI., Roberta Eaton Palmer and Robert Palmer of Knoxville.TN., Douglas and Lisa Mitchell Eaton of South Bend, IN., John and Sheryl Schaffer Eaton of Phoenix, AZ., and Scott and Kimberly Eaton of Oceola, IN. Lucille is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren, two with spouses, and 5 great-great-grandchildren (1 deceased). Lucille regularly attended the Otsego Haus senior day care center in Gaylord since 2000, and was a parishioner of St. Mary Catholic Church. Prior to her illness, she was an accomplished china painter, and enjoyed coin collecting, playing cards, and traveling to Florida each winter. Both Lucille and husband Charles were active in the Knights of Columbus organization prior to his death, and Lucille was active as a Eucharistic minister at Holy Cross Church in South Bend, IN., prior to her move to Gaylord. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, Nov. 24, 2003 at 11 a.m. from St. Mary Cathedral. Interment will be at the Riverview cemetery in South Bend, IN. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be directed to the Alzheimer's Association of Northern Michigan, the Otsego Haus, Hospice of Michigan, or St. Mary Catholic Church in Gaylord, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Mr. Joseph T. English
Joseph T. English, 77 of Atlanta died Monday, December 29, 2003. He was born in Detroit on December 10, 1926, the son of Joseph and Lillian Mae (French) English. He grew up in Detroit, and on April 16, 1960 he married Bonnie Mae Kowalski in Dunkirk, New York. Mr. English was Quartermaster in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Campaign during World War II and the Korean War. After the Navy he was a truck driver for T.I.M.E.-DC and Linde Air Products, retiring in 1985. He moved north to metro Atlanta in 1985 to oversee the management and operations at Joey’s Shell in Atlanta, then on to English Brothers in Gaylord. Mr. English enjoyed four-wheeling in the north woods, drinking beer and smoking cigarettes, snowmobiling, old movies and war movies, billards, and enjoying friends and retirees at McBrides Pub. He was a member of Atlanta Eagles, English Deer Hunt Club, and Teamsters 299/283. Mr. English is survived by his wife, Bonnie of Gaylord; children, John (Delores) of Royal Oak, Joey (Lani) of Atlanta, Patrick (Kathy) of Oxford, James (Kim) of Boyne Falls, Ed (Helen) of Gaylord; 14 grandchildren; 2 nephews; and sister, Carmel Ogle of Mt. Clemens. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Lillian Mae (French) English. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at 11 a.m. from St. Mary Cathedral in Gaylord, Father John McCracken officiating. Family will begin gathering at the church at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Resurrection cemetery, in Gaylord. Memorial contributions may be made to American Legion or your local VFW, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Mrs. Fran Evert
Mrs. Frances E. Evert, 84 of Gaylord died on Friday, February 13, 2004 at Aspen Ridge. She was born in Hartland, MI on September 15, 1919 and had lived most of her life in Fenton. She was a member of the Michaywe First Presbyterian Church, a lifetime member of the Chrysanthemum Chapter #114 Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Otsego County Historical Society. She enjoyed photography, cooking and sewing and was an avid card player. On October 12, 1940 in Fenton she married her husband Ralph Evert, who survives. She is also survived by 2 daughters, Yolanda (Robert) Waldie of Charlevoix and Charlene (Donald) Roman of California; 6 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Lawrence and Hugh Irvin; and her sister, Noline Richmond. An Eastern Star service will be held on Monday, February 16th at 3:45 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home, followed by the funeral service at 4:30 p.m., the Reverend Mary McClure, officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday from 11 a.m. until the time of services. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Mr. Leslie Hill
Mr. Leslie Hill, 53 of Vanderbilt died Saturday, November 8, 2003. He was born in Royal Oak on August 10, 1950. He moved to the Otsego Lake area and spent most of his time in the Otsego County area. Mr. Hill worked as a meat cutter for Circle M Ranch and later worked for Heartland Distributors. He was an avid hunter, a Vanderbilt Lions Club member, and he loved his family dearly. He is survived by his wife, Doreen children, Brent & Kylie, Stacy & Joe, Jeremy & Sarah, Stephanie & Rob; one granddaughter, Isabella and a new grandbaby on the way. Memorial Service, Saturday, January 31, 2004, 11 AM, Nelson Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leslie Hill family, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Mrs. Frances P. Hyde
Frances P. Hyde, 88, of Gaylord, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2003 at McReynolds Hall. Mrs. Hyde was born in Flint on Aug. 29, 1915 and moved to Gaylord in 1993 from South Lyon. Mrs. Hyde worked at Mt. Carmel Hospital in Detroit for more than 10 years and enjoyed raising her six children. She was a member of St. Mary Cathedral Parish. Mrs. Hyde had also been a very active member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Detroit and had been the president of the Altar Society there. On July 29, 1935 in Detroit, she married Francis J. Hyde. married 68 years, Frances and her husband were the longest-married couple of St. Mary Cathedral Parish. Mrs. Hyde is survived by her husband, Francis; six sons, Charles (Mary Lou) of Columbus, Ohio, John Michael "Mike" (Joan) of Gaylord, James (Ellen) of Massachusetts, John F. of Marquette, Robert P. (Margaret) of Boyne City, and Timothy of Boyne City; 19 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. from St. Mary Cathedral, the Rev. John McCracken officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection cemetery in Gaylord. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home was held on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and at the church today beginning at 10 a.m. A parish rosary/wake service was held Friday at 6:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Cathedral's "Faith in the Future" Building Fund, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mrs. June Ingleby
Mrs. June P. Ingleby 95 of Gaylord died Friday, December 26, 2003. Mrs. Ingleby was born in Italy on April 7, 1908, was raised in Detroit and moved to Gaylord in April of 1968. She had owned a beauty shop for a short time and was also a mid wife. In 1947 she married her husband, William, who preceded her in death in 1989. Mrs. Ingleby was an avid sewer, enjoyed skiing and loved her church, The Seventh Day Adventist Church. She is survived by her daughters, Lee Fought, Donna Ingleby – Buhr, Shirley Gallandt, and Kathi Ingleby; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Norine Ansuini and Rose Johnston. Along with her husband, she was also preceded in death by her grandson Charles Knorr. A memorial service will be held in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Gaylord Seventh Day Adventist Church Building Fund, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Mr. Byron Inglesh
Byron C. Inglesh, 69, of Gaylord, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003 at Otsego Memorial Hospital. Mr. Inglesh was born in Barton City, Mich. on April 27, 1934. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Alcoholics Anonymous in Gaylord. He was an accomplished pianist and loved classical music. He enjoyed photography and fishing and loved his cats. He was also a computer game enthusiast and had the opportunity to review several programs for computer games. Mr. Inglesh is survived by his son, Mike (Evonne) of New York City, N.Y.; granddaughter, Amanda Inglesh; a sister, Brenda (Robert J.) Tucker of Southfield; and two nieces, Mercedes and Madelyn. Contributions in memory of Byron Inglesh may be made to Alcoholics Anonymous or to the Otsego County Animal Shelter, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Mae Jaruzel
Mrs. Mae Jaruzel, 80 of Pontiac, died Sunday, February 1, 2004 at the Meadowbrook Nursing Center in Rochester Hills. Mrs. Jaruzel was born August 24, 1923 in Murphysboro, IL. She retired from General Motors and later worked at the Pontiac Farmer’s Market until the age of 79. She was also a proud Army veteran. Mae was married to Clement Jaruzel, who died in 1966. She is survived by 2 brothers, Ray and Albert Wilson; 1 sister, Rosalie Ford; 1 niece; 2 nephews; In-laws; Stanley “Bill” (Anna “Regina”) Jaruzel of Gaylord, Clara Hughes of Kendallville, IN, Mitch Jaruzel of East Jordan, Paul (Mary) Jaruzel of Gaylord, Pete (Ethel) Jaruzel of Wolverine. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004 at 11 a.m. from St. Mary Cathedral, Rev. John McCracken, officiating. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Friday, Feb 6, from 3-5 p.m. Burial will take place in the spring at St. Mary cemetery in Gaylord. Memorial contributions may be made to the Michigan Humane Society in Rochester Hills, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Mrs. Grace M. (Terrance Gay) Lewis
Grace M. (Terrance Gay) Lewis, 95, went to her heavenly home Jan. 4, 2004. She was born Dec. 7, 1908 in Scotland, coming to the United States via Canada at the age of 16. She had lived in Gaylord since 1946, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. Grace was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; three brothers; her beloved husband, Dan; and her granddaughter Linda Grace. Her youngest son, David Scott Lewis, also preceded her in death on Aug.1, 2003. She is survived by her sons, Jack (Peggy) of Florida, and Dan (Virgie) of Pickford and Florida; and her daughter-in-law, Gina W. Lewis of Franklin, Tenn. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A private service will be held at a later date. Arrangements were handled by the Nelson Funeral Home Inc. of Gaylord.
