Riecks, Norman H., Hamburg Twp., MI

Age 70, died January 30, 1999 at his home. Norman was born in Detroit on May 7, 1928 the son of the late Norman and Regina (Hagemoser) Riecks. On August 4, 1979 Norman married his loving wife Bobbi L. Riecks, who survives. Norman is also survived by his sons, Fred (Beckie) of Chelsea and James (Jane) of Westland; his step-children, Cheryl (Robert) Herndon of Zeeland, Kim (Thomas) Maize of Howell, and James (Norma) Holloway of TX; his sisters, Lois Vis of FL, Viola Pierce of SC, Pat Roeske of Brighton, and Dorothy Elsworth of SC; and eight grandchildren. Norm was a member of Pipecovers Local 25 in Detroit where he worked for 40 years. He served the US Navy in WWII and loved to golf on the Rush Lake Golf League. Funeral Services will be held at 7pm, on Tuesday, February 2, 1999 at the BELL-BOREK FUNERAL HOME, Hamburg with Rev. John Dambacher officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4pm until the time of service. Memorial donations to Cancer Care at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital would be appreciated.

Hoyt, Martha Jane, Milan, MI

Formerly of Tecumseh
Martha Jane Chick Hoyt, 85, was born May 11, 1913 in Kell, Illinois, the third child of eight of Lester James Williams and Amy Hope Shipley. She passed away February 1, 1999 at the Saline Evangelical Home. Martha retired from Fords Plastic Department in Saline in December of 1974, a member of Local 892. She also was a member of York Baptist Church. Accepting Christ as her Savior, Martha is now in Heaven. Martha is survived by a daughter, Mildred (Gail) Lentz; a son, Donald (Brenda) Garner; seven grandchildren, Timothy (Debra) Lentz, Curtis (Sue) Lentz, Christine (Raymond) Knowles, Bradley (Connie) Garner, Kimberly Sanchez, Debra (Scott) Mack, and Sherri (James) LaGore; 17 great grandchildren, Becky, Jonathan, Mark, Bethany, Matthew, Jessica, Cory, Joshua, Nicole, Brandon, Justin, Amanda, Aaron, Chala, Clayton, Kamden, Stephanie; three sisters, Geneva (Frank) Forst, Amy (Edward) Schiermann and Viola Butler. Martha was preceded in death by an infant son, Leon Garner; her husband Donavan; a granddaughter, Amy Lentz; and four brothers, Ira, Quentin, Scott and Bill Williams. The essence of her loving devotion to the family will always be cherished. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home, Milan with the Rev. David J. Grinnell of York Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Marble Park cemetery, Milan. Those desiring may make contributions to York Baptist Church. Envelopes are available at the funeral home where friends may call on Tuesday 2-5 and 7-9 p.m.

Sleeman, Robert Dawson, Fenton, MI

Age 84, died Saturday, January 30, 1999 at McLaren Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 3, 1999 at First Presbyterian Church of Fenton with Pastor Dale Swihart officiating. Interment in Oakwood cemetery, Fenton. Visitation will be held from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Rd., Fenton. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to the American Diabetes Foundation or the First Presbyterian Church of Fenton. Mr. Sleeman was born December 13, 1914 in Linden, the son of Dr. Blythe Rooks and Rose Ortman (Dawson) Sleeman. He had lived in Linden-Fenton area most of his life. He married Clarinda Reagan in Holly on May 2, 1937. He attended Michigan State University for three years and was a member of the Farmhouse Fraternity. He served in the National Guard. Mr. Sleeman was a tool and die operator for the Pontiac Motor Co. for 381/2 years,retiring January 1, 1985, and was a member of UAW Local 653. He had attended the Linden Presbyterian Church and Fenton Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the National Wildlife Federation, National Association of the Civilian Conservation Corp., the Nature Conservancy, the Audobon Society, the Sierra Club, the Isaac Walton League, Wilderness Society, and a life member of the National Rifle Association and the American Forestry Association. Surviving are his wife Clarinda; two sons, Donald Sleeman of Ann Arbor and Richard and wife Lynn Sleeman of Rochester Hills; two grandchildren, Erica and Lesley of Rochester Hills; sister-in-law, Donna Sleeman of Fenton. Mr. Sleeman was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and a sister.

Kolstad, Carolyn Coe, Naples, Florida

Age 88, died Saturday, January 30, 1999. She was born February 23, 1910 in Springfield, Massachusetts to David Clark and Laila Genevieve (Phelon) Coe. Carolyn was first married to E.E. Pope who died in 1950. In 1952 she married Richard S. Kolstad and they came to Florida in 1975 from New England. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Joanna K. and Robert Lloyd of Silver Spring, Maryland; her daughter, Penny Pope Schmidt of Ann Arbor, MI; her daughter-in-law, Ronny Pope of Skaneateles, NY; her six grandchildren, Benjamin and James Roberts, Douglas and Christopher Pope, David and Kristi Schmidt; and her two great grandsons, Colin and Tristan Pope. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard S. Kolstad in 1997, and by her son, David C. Pope in 1990. The family will have a private memorial service at a later date at Hillcrest Park Mausoleum in Springfield, Massachusetts. Hodges Funeral Chapel, 941-261-1237

Hartmann, Kathryn I., Saline, MI

Age 75, died Saturday, January 30, 1999 at the Saline Evangelical Home. She was born July 11, 1923 in Sidney, Ohio, the daughter of Arthur and Nellie (Replogle) Koons. On July 28, 1943 in Sidney, Ohio, she married Rev. Stanley R. Hartmann and he preceded her in death on November 15, 1983. She had been a Saline resident for over 25 years, and a member of the St. Paul U.C.C. in Saline. Survivors include three children, Beth Ann Edwards of Tecumseh, Robert (Martha) Hartmann of Pinckney, and Barry (Karla) Hartmann also of Tecumseh. Other survivors include two grandchildren, Amanda and Ashley Hartmann at home; one brother, William Koons of Wilmington, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Koons, and one sister, Mary Nelle Moyer. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 3, 1999 at 11 a.m. from the St. Paul U.C.C. with Rev. Joanna Lance officiating. Burial will take place in the Bethlehem cemetery, Ann Arbor. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 1100 North Main St., Ann Arbor, MI 48104. Lennox, Cathie, Chelsea, MI

(Formerly of Ypsilanti and Belleville, MI)Age 78, Mrs. Lennox passed away Sunday, January 31, 1999 at the Chelsea Retirement Center. She was born July 1, 1920 in Scotland, daughter of the late Donald and Catherine (McCleod) MacLean. Mrs. Lennox was a member of Ypsilanti Assembly of God Church. Survived by two children, Elizabeth Lennox of Ypsilanti and Donella Lennox of Munising; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and a brother, Callum MacLean of Scotland. Preceded in death by her husband, Alexander; grandson, David Bishop; great grandson, David Lee Pullen-Bishop; and a sister, Annie McDonald. In-state DAVID C. BROWN FUNERAL HOME, 460 E. Huron River Dr., Belleville where friends may call 1-9 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral Service 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Rev. Gordon Schleicher, Pastor of Chelsea Retirement Center, officiating. Interment, Highland cemetery, Ypsilanti. Memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's Association would be appreciated.

Ware, Martha J., Ypsilanti, MI

Age 47, died Friday, January 29, 1999 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. She was born July 31, 1951 in Leland, MS the daughter of Walter and Ruby Lee (Shelly) Cannon and was a member of the Amistad Community Church of Ann Arbor. Survivors include her three sons, Jerone, Michael, and Lenard Ware; three daughters, Jennifer, Yolanda, and Jessica Ware; one sister, Jimmie (Jerry) Townson; two brothers, Otha and Chris Lindsey; four grandchildren, Leiondra, Jalicia, Talijah, and Tabion; and a host of loving relatives. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, February 2, 1999 at the NIE FUNERAL HOME, 2400 Carpenter Rd. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, February, 3, 1999 at New Hope Baptist Church, 218 Chapin St., Ann Arbor, with Rev. Herbert R. Lowe officiating.

Ruffle, Alice, Ann Arbor, MI

Age 91, died January 30, 1999 at Whitehall Convalescent Center. Mrs. Ruffle moved to Ann Arbor eight years ago to be near her daughter. In Texas, she was a member of the Eastern Star and the Christian Church. Survivors include her daughter, Mavis (John) Kostelec of Ann Arbor; two grandchildren, Stephen (Marianne) Kostelec and Linda (Bruce) Fairbanks. Three great-grandchildren also survive, Gregory, Laura and Mark Fairbanks. No services are planned. Memorials are suggested to the Great Saul Trail-Boy Scouts of America. Arrangements by the Muehlig Chapel.

Mayer, Paul E., Crystal Falls Township, MI

Age 78, passed away Sunday at his home in Crystal Falls. He was born May 21, 1920 in Lodi Township, MI, the son of the late Ernest and Matilda Mayer. He attended school in Ann Arbor. He served in the US Army during WWII. Paul married the former Florence Crouch on June 7, 1954 in Brighton, MI. He was employed at the Chrysler Motor Plant near Ann Arbor. He enjoyed farming and deer hunting. He was preceded in death by one son, Paul II. He is survived by his wife, Florence; two daughters, Patricia Sexton of Howell and Connie (Edward) Behn of Alpha; one sister, Elizabeth (Raymond) Lambarth of Ann Arbor; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held in the spring and will be announced by the Plowe-Nash Funeral Home of Crystal Falls.

Rogers, Carmen M., Howell, MI

Waterbury, Betty D., Ypsilanti Township, MI

Age 80, passed away Monday, February 1, 1999 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. She was born January 18, 1919 in Ypsilanti, the daughter of Merle and Catherine (Crippen) Renton. On May 27, 1949, she married George Waterbury and he survives. Mrs. Waterbury had been employed by Ford Motor Co., Ypsilanti Plant for 21 years, retiring in 1967. Other survivors include: two sons, Gary (Judy) Dapprich of Belleville and Rick (Mary) Dapprich of Clinton; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and two sisters, Ardis (Ted) Johnson of Flint and Lugenia (Bud) Moyer of FL. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, February 4, 1999 at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Highland cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Washtenaw or the American Lung Association. Envelopes are available at the funeral home where the family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Age 94, passed away February 1, 1999 at the Bishop Grey Inn. She was born in Bay City, MI on March 26, 1904. She was a restaurant owner. She belonged to the Wyandotte Garden Club, Ann Arbor Antique Club. She was an Episcopalian. She was a member of St. Albans Church, Auburndale, FL. Survivors include: daughter, Constance McNutt of Winter Haven, FL; son, William Stokes of Virginia; step-son, Gerald Abrahms of CA; brother, Herman Tews of Bay City, MI; seven grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held later. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Bishop Grey Inn Foundation, 206 W. Orange, Davenport, FL 33837.

Hayes, M. Racine, Hendersonville, TN

Age 71, passed away Monday, February 1, 1999. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Carol; one son, Cleve of Florida; one daughters, Billie Jean Sturgill of Ypsilanti; stepchildren, Mike and Donna Sanders, both of Ypsilanti; six grandchildren; two brothers; and several nieces and nephews, including Stella (Billy) Hamby and Earl (Gloria) Adkins. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 3, 1999 at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 6-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Burda, Mary Jo, Ann Arbor, MI

Age 51, died Monday, February 1, 1999. She was born September 13, 1947 in Chicago, IL. Mary Jo was a champion high school diver. She and Joseph S. Dulka had four children:Jeni, Gretchen, Beth, and Dan. She later became an artist, working with stain glass and graphic design.Beloved mother, may angels protect you and sadness forget you. Special thanks to Arbor Hospice for showing such kindness during her last months. Visitation will be held 11-12 p.m. Wednesday, February 3 with services from 12-1 p.m. at the St. Mary Student Center, 331 Williams, Ann Arbor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Arbor Hospice.

Hackbarth, James E., Ann Arbor, MI

Age 52, passed away Friday, January 29, 1999. He was born December 14, 1946 in Ann Arbor, Michigan the son of Oscar and Edanna Hackbarth. Jim retired from the City of Ann Arbor January of 1997. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #159 and Ann Arbor Moose Lodge. He was an avid motorcyclist and fisherman. Jim was a decorated Viet Nam Veteran serving in the U.S. Navy. James was confirmed at Bethlehem Church. He is survived by his three sons, Patrick (Denise) Parker, Brent Hackbarth, Michael (Leslie) Hackbarth; five grandchildren; brother and sisters, Carol (David) DeBorde, Sandy (David) VanDen Bosch, Jeri Cole, Steven (Lori) Hackbarth, Susie (John) Sartori; mother, Edanna Hackbarth; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jo and father, Oscar Hackbarth. The family will receive friends Thursday, 1-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Muehlig Funeral Chapel. For those who wish, contributions may be made to American Cancer Society or The Shriners Children Hospital in Mr. Hackbarth's memory.

Beloved husband of Roxanne P., Dear son of Marjorie Potter. Brother of Jane Brown and Donna Potter. Michael was the owner of Hill-O-Beans coffee shop in Kerrytown. Funeral Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of the L.J. Griffin Funeral Home, 7707 Middlebelt Rd. (at Ann Arbor Trail). Family will receive visitors Monday and Tuesday 5-9 p.m.

Wiggins, Max F., Scottville, MI

Age 71, passed away February 2, 1999. Max was born February 4, 1927 in Alma, MI, the son of Robert and Emma (Carr) Wiggins. He grew up in Gregory, MI, moving to Ann Arbor where he graduated from Ann Arbor High School. Max was married October 12, 1947, in Ann Arbor to Ellen Gleason, and she survives. He worked as a Mason in the construction business in Ann Arbor for many years, retiring in 1993, and moving to Mason County. Surviving Mr. Wiggins, in addition to his wife Ellen, are two sons, Michael Wiggins of Florida and Nick (Rosemary) Wiggins of Custer, MI; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Arthur Benzinger of St. Louis, MI; one sister, Viola Nichols of Hale, MI; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by one son, Ken Wiggins. There will be no services for Mr. Max Wiggins at this time. Stephens Funeral Home, Scottville is handling arrangements.
