Lewis, Ann, Ann Arbor, MI

Ann Lewis passed away February 16, 1999 at Glacier Hills. Ann was born May 24, 1917 in Norwich, CT, the daughter of James and Frances (Price) McCune. She married Forest Lewis, also of Norwich, and together they moved to Ann Arbor in 1948. Her husband preceded her in death in 1987. Ann graduated from Norwich Free Academy and attended a business school in New York City. In Ann Arbor, she attended St. Marys Chapel for many years, and was also active in the local Women of the Moose Chapter. Ann and her husband were wonderful dancers. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and finally great-grandmother who only five years ago was babysitting her first great-grandson daily. Preceding her in death were her parents and her five siblings, Frank, Edward, and James (Ruth) McCune, all of Norwich, Alice (George) L'Hreaux of Milford, CT, and Mary (Robert) Hoffman of Baltic, CT. Her surviving family includes her two sons, James (Delphine) of Ann Arbor and Gale (Sandy) of Cheltenham Victoria, Australia; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Muehlig Chapel at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 19, 1999. She will be in our hearts forever.

Holmes, Teresa A., Ann Arbor, MI

Formerly of Orange County, Virginia. Born April 7, 1955 at the former Selfridge AFB in Mt. Clemens, MI, died suddenly February 11, 1999 at the age of 43. Surviving are her son, Timothy Holmes of Ann Arbor, MI and daughter, Amanda Michelle Holmes, a senior at Pioneer High School. She was the daughter of Mrs. Lula Olive Pierce of Las Vegas, NV; wife of the late Lt. Colonel Thomas Edward Pierce (ret). Teresa or Terry as she was known to her friends and co-workers, was employed by the C-Text, Inc. of Ann Arbor as Software Release Manager for the past 9 years. An avid quilter, she will be remembered by family, friends, co-workers and quilters around the world for the beauty, and loving detail she personally crafted into each quilt she designed and all the lives she has touched. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held Friday, February 19, 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, on the corner of State St. and Huron St. in Ann Arbor. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends after the memorial service in the Wesley Lounge at the First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials for Teresa be made to the Amanda Holmes Education Fund c/o C-Text, Inc., 1428 E. Ellsworth Ave., Ann Arbor, MI 48108. Bruce, Sylvia Ann, Pinckney, MI

Age 54, died February 16, 1999. Beloved wife of Charles M., dearest daughter of Dolores L. and the late William A. Mazurek. Loving mother of Tracy L. Schafer and Cristi A. Bruce. Dear sister of Ronald W. (Sally) Mazurek. Also survived by two special nieces: Sonja Amos and Shelly Mazurek. Lanning, Gail M., Brighton, MI

Age 65, died Wednesday, February 17, 1999. Visitation Friday 1-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Keehn Funeral Home, Brighton. The funeral service will be Saturday,1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Brown, Richard E., Canton, MI

Age 74, passed away suddenly, Wednesday, February 17, 1999 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born October 6, 1924 in North Hampton, MA. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On February 1, 1947, he married Marilyn Wilson in Detroit and she survives. Mr. Brown was an auto body technician for many years, retiring from Sesi Lincoln Mercury in 1992. He was an avid bowler and a golfer and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #2250, the Loyal Order of Moose #782 and the American Legion Post #282. Mr. Brown was very active with the Ypsilanti Sea Scouts and never missed marching in the Ypsilanti Memorial Day Parade. In addition to his wife, survivors include: two daughters, Christi (Robert) Shafer of Dundee, MI and LynnDee (Herbert) Boyd of Elverson, PA; three grandchildren, Robert E. (Susie) Shafer, Richard W. Shafer and Cari (Tim) Small; and one great grandson, Ayn Michael Small. The memorial service will be 6 p.m. Saturday, February 20 at Stark Funeral Service Moore Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Envelopes are available at the funeral home where the family will receive friends 5-6 p.m. Saturday.

Farr, Anna Mae, Ypsilanti, MI

Age 41, died Tuesday, February 16, 1999. She was born May 24, 1957, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, the daughter of Clinton E. and Anna M. (Schaffer) Farr. She will always be remembered for the love she had for her family and animals. Survivors besides her father include two sons, Timothy Farr of Ypsilanti and Chad Farr of Belleville; Fiance, John Earl Vasher of Ypsilanti; nine brothers and sisters; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother. Funeral service will be held Saturday, February 20 at 11 a.m. at the JANOWIAK FUNERAL HOME, Geer-Logan Chapel with Rev. James Southward of Graceway Baptist Church officiating. Cremation will follow. The family will receive friends Friday at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m.

LaCoste, Marc Joseph, Milan, MI

Age 34, died Tuesday, February 16, 1999 at his home. He was born September 10, 1964 in Lakewood, OH the son of Robert B. and Patricia K. (Kukla) LaCoste Sr. Marc was an avid hunter who enjoyed restoring cars and building model airplanes. Survivors include his longtime girlfriend, Tanya Osugi; his father, Robert B. (Ann) LaCoste Sr. of Harwood, MD; his mother, Pat LaCoste of Ypsilanti; two brothers, Robert (Suzi) LaCoste Jr. and Christopher (Laura) LaCoste; his stepbrother, Christopher Lotts; his stepsister, Kimberly Pounsberry; his grandparents and numerous nieces. Sands, Alfred Doughty Pipa, Ann Arbor, MI

Formerly of Huntington Woods, MIAge 86, passed Wednesday, February 17, 1999 at Vencor Hospital Central Tampa, Tampa, FL. Born June 30, 1912 in St. Louis, MO, Mr. Sands lived in Huntington Woods from 1940-1995. A graduate of Lawrence Technological University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, he retired from Burroughs Corporation in 1972 after 51 years of service. He was a member of Engineering Society of Detroit since 1936, served as a volunteer in preparing income tax for Senior Citizens in Royal Oak for 18 years, volunteered for Junior Achievement, attended Shrine of the Little Flower from 1940-1995, served as usher and adult server at Masses, attended 6:30 a.m. Mass daily for many years and was a member of the Ushers Club. A most sensitive and compassionate man who loved all of Gods creatures. Survivors include: two daughters, Laurie (Joseph) Bernia of Ann Arbor, MI and Charlaine Bohnet of Fairfield, OH; four grandchildren, Richard (Julie) Stapleton, Michael (Bianca) Stapleton, Christine (Jon) Stapleton-Pratt all of Tampa, FL and Melissa Falsetta of Ann Arbor, MI; also three step-granddaughters; and four step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nettie Bull of Ypsilanti, MI and Mary Jo Gaines of Bellflower, CA. He was preceded in death by his wife Lucille, May 15, 1975; siblings: Harry Sands, Jenny Fettig and Laura Bobier. Tietz, Loretta Elizabeth, South Lyon, MI

Age 17, died suddenly, Thursday, February 18, 1999 at her home. She was born August 12, 1981 in Ann Arbor. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of South Lyon. Survivors include: her father, Kurtlind (Carol) Tietz of South Lyon; her mother, Terri (Billy) Dinser of South Lyon; one sister, Leandra Tietz; two brothers, Franz Tietz and Stefan Tietz; step brothers, Alex Dinser and Kyle Dinser, all of South Lyon; paternal grandparents, Carroll and Jean Tietz of South Lyon; maternal grandmother, Beverly Neumann of Silver Springs, Florida; her aunts and uncles, Tom and Pam Gardner of South Lyon, Mike and Marcy Long of White Lake, Rick and Debbie Long of White Lake, Jeff Long of Linden, Keith and Chrissan Schmittou of South Lyon, Derrick and Nancy Tietz of South Lyon, and Kathy (William) Krisch of Tustin; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Loretta was a compassionate and loving young lady who put others before herself. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Zimmerman, Alice L., Milan, MI

Age 87, died Friday, February 19, 1999 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. She was born on June 8, 1911 in Homer, Michigan to Willis and Mary (Colan) Leonard. Alice retired from the Ypsilanti State Hospital as a Psychiatric Nurse after 23 years of service. She was a member of the State Employees Retirement Association, life member of Tri-County Sportsman Club, Michigan Theatre Foundation, Milan Transit Committee and the Milan Senior Citizens. Survivors include two daughters; Kay (Joe) Szabo, Betty (Dale) Lytle; and a sister Lillian Goldsmith all of Milan. 19 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and a great great granddaughter; and a loving friend Everett Eggert also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son; daughter; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home in Milan with the Rev. Irma Ward officiating. Burial will follow in Marble Park cemetery, Milan. Those desiring may make contributions to the Milan Senior Citizens. Mildred Graves died suddenly on February 18. She lived in Rochester, MI for 15 years, and then moved to Ann Arbor four years ago. She is survived by three children, William Graves of Lansing, MI; Roberta Boyd of Escanaba, and Judith Hall of Ann Arbor; a sister, Olive Saputo; four grandchildren, Jeanette Forrest, Patrick Boyd, Jacqi and Holli Hall; four great grandchildren, Stacie Schroeder, Troy T.J. Hazelett, Johnie, Ypsilanti, MI

Age 78, passed away January 30, 1999. He was born in Paintsville, KYand moved to Ypsilanti in 1950 where he was a painting contractor until his retirement in 1995. He is survived by his wife, Helen; daughters, Susan McDonell and Johnie Campbell; and son-in-law, Rod Campbell; and grandsons, Josh and Alex Campbell. Also surviving are three brothers, Sammie Hazelett of Ypsilanti, Clyde Hazelett and Thomas Hazelett of Hager Hill, KY; and five sisters, Ruth Centers of Paintsville, KY, Mattie Wright and Julie Swartz of Dayton Beach, FL, Fannie Ehrman of Shelby, OH and Sarah Hazelett of Fort Wayne, IN. Age 45, passed away February 17, 1999 in Ypsilanti, MI. She was born on May 1, 1953 in Birmingham, AL, the daughter of Lonnie and Ora Atkins-Whitsett and they preceded her in death. Funeral will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 22, 1999 at Mt. Olive Church of God in Christ with Eld. Willie Sheard, Pastor and Rev. Milton Woods, officiating. Elliott, Mildred, Ypsilanti, MI

Age 93, died February 3, 1999 in Port Charlotte, FL after a brief illness. She was born Millie Louise Schwieger in Red Wing, MN on September 30, 1905. She married George Peters Elliott in 1926 and he preceded her in death in 1983. Mrs. Elliott is survived by her three children and their spouses: Nathalie Elliott Edmunds (William), William George Elliott (Marie) and Samuel James Elliott (Sue), all of Ypsilanti. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. The oldest of six children, she has one surviving brother, Albert J. Schwieger of Ypsilanti. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Kozonis, Dr. Michael C., Bloomfield Hills, MI

Founder of the first Coronary Care Unit in Michigan and Director of Preventative Medicine at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Pontiac. Dr. Kozonis died Tuesday, February 16, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Pontiac. He recently retired after having been a cardiologist for 48 years. He traveled extensively and taught courses around the world. He was a member of the L.I.U. Basketball Team. He graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School where he was a member of the Phi Chi Honor Medical Fraternity. His accomplishments were: Cardiac consultant for General Motors Corporation, Diplomate, American Board of Internal Medicine; Life Fellow, American College of Cardiology; Life Fellow, American College of Physicians; Diplomate, American Board of Cardiovascular Disease; Fellow, Council of Clinical Cardiology, American Heart Association; Chief of Cardiology at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital; Board of Trustees, Michigan Heart Association; Director EKG Department, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Assistant Clinical Professor, Wayne State University School of Medicine. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine and three daughters, Mary, Joan, and Judy; and five grandchildren. He was a loving and loved father and grandfather who touched many peoples lives with his warmth and compassion. He was be greatly missed. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Dr. Michael C. Schlenker, Martin E., Jr., Ann Arbor, MI

Age 75, died Thursday, February 18, 1999 at Saline Evangelical Home after a long illness. He was born in Ann Arbor, March 15, 1923, the son of Martin and Flora (Hiller) Schlenker. Mr. Schlenker lived his entire life in Ann Arbor and contributed significantly to the community over the years. Martin loved music and played trombone for several bands including the Ann Arbor High School Marching Band and Symphony Band, a dance band in Houghton Lake, Army Officers Club Dance Band during WWII, the Ann Arbor Civic Orchestra and the Drum and Bugle Corp for the American Legion. He was also a member of the Wayne Barbershop Chorus and the Wayne Drops Barbershop Quartet. Martin served in WWII in the Army Corps of Engineers at Fort Leonard Wood, MO and in Akron, OH on special assignment as a sheet-metal worker. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as a Master Sergeant. He was a member and commander of the U.S. Power Squadron of Ann Arbor, a non-profit, educational organization which taught safe boating. He was interested in old cars and restored Model A Fords, participated in parades and let his daughter drive one of the cars to school. He also held a private pilots license for some years. Martin and his sister, Floramae, became the third generation owners of Schlenker Hardware in 1967. Schlenkers was a family-owned business founded in Ann Arbor in 1886. Martin retired in 1994 after 49 years of working in the store. The Schlenker Hardware building located at 213 W. Liberty from 1906-1995 was an Ann Arbor landmark. It was an old-fashioned hardware store where customers could find anything they needed and receive personalized, knowledgeable help. In addition to running the business, Marty did sheet-metal work, including making a copper fireplace featured in Better Homes and Gardens, providing 5,000 feet of copper expansion joints for the construction of the Mackinac Bridge. In his later years, he designed and made items for the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum where he served as a trustee. Marty was a well-known figure in Ann Arbor for years. He was recognized and well-liked where ever he went. Even when travelling on vacation, people would recognize his name because they had shopped in his store. He is survived by his wife, Gladys; sisters, Rosemary Strieter and Floramae Hancock; son, Jerry (Ann); daughter, Joanne (John) Cahill Hirsh; grandchildren, Megan and Jeffrey Schlenker, Jacob Brabbs, Joel Hirsh; step-daughter, Janice Hesse; step-son, Lewis (Skip) Allen; step-grandchildren, Sandra Brandenburg, Craig Brisard, Brett Allen, Steven Glenn; and by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 22, at 10 a.m. at MUEHLIG FUNERAL CHAPEL in Ann Arbor, with Rev. Greg Smith and Rev. Gary Kwiatek presiding. Visitation will be on Saturday Noon-5 p.m. and on Sunday 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Interment will be at Bethlehem cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Saline Evangelical Home.

Manning, James David Sr.,, Eureka Springs, AK

Age 69, died Wednesday, February 17, 1999 at Northwest Medical Center, Springdale, AK after a courageous fight with leukemia. He was born July 1, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan to Herschel Nicholas and Olive Near Manning. He and his wife, Barbara moved to Eureka Springs seven years ago from Bacliff, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Maxine Joslin. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Barbara Manning of Eureka Springs, AK; three sons, Mark B. and his wife, Pam Manning of Howard City, MI, James D. Jr. and wife, Deborah Manning of Whitmore Lake, MI, Robert A. and wife Michele Manning of Whitmore Lake, MI; one daughter, Sheila Ann and husband James Shehan of Benbrook, TX; one brother, Bob and wife Anna Manning of Whitmore Lake, MI; two sisters, Corrine and husband Brad Shackett of Puyallup, WA, Betty and husband, Sid Manning of Whitmore Lake, MI; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are by the Bella Vista Funeral Home & Crematory, 2258 Forest Hills Boulevard, Bella Vista, AK. Moses, Sylvia Smallwood, Tarpon Springs, FL

(Formerly of Ypsilanti, MI)Age 47, passed away Saturday, February 13, 1999. She was a registered nurse in Clearwater, FL. She earned her nursing degree from Pasco-Hernando Community College and graduated first in her class at the College of Business at NOVA University, Fort Lauderdale, FL. She was a member of the Sportscar Club of America, Porsche Club of America, Historic Sportscar Racing Association of America, the Florida State Nursing Association, and the Association of Operating Room Nurses. She is survived by her husband, Bill; one son, Toni Cisek of West Palm Beach, FL; her parents, Laurel and Robert Smallwood of Castle Rock, WA; one sister, Sharon Peterson of Las Vegas; four brothers, Mark Smallwood of Ypsilanti, Bob Smallwood of Castle Rock, WA, David Smallwood of Saline, MI, and John Smallwood of Longview, WA; and several nieces and nephews. Services have already taken place.

Stoll, Erma M., Dexter, MI

Age 88, died Friday, February 19, 1999 at Chelsea Community Hospital after a short illness. She was born on November 14, 1910 in Dexter the daughter of Jacob and Helena (Sutter) Haarer. Mrs. Stoll lived in the Dexter area all of her life. She loved gardening, her farm animals, and nature. She married Arthur D. Stoll in Ann Arbor in 1929, and he preceded her in death on August 31, 1989. Survivors include three sons, Arthur N. (Patricia) Stoll of Chelsea, Donald R. Stoll of Dexter, and Norman L. (Deborah) Stoll of Ann Arbor; one sister, Helen Rubin of Cross Village; 11 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister, Rosina; three brothers, Jacob, Phillip, Oscar; her daughter-in-law, Barbara, on January 12, 1998; and her grandson, Jeff, on January 8, 1999. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 11 a.m. at St. Andrews United Church of Christ in Dexter, with Rev. Gary Kwiatek officiating. Burial will follow at St. Andrews cemetery, Dexter. The family will receive friends at COLE FUNERAL CHAPEL, Chelsea, Monday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., and at the church Tuesday, 10-11 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrews UCC.
