Starks, Glenna V., (DeBaptiste-Herndon)

Ypsilanti, MI
Age 98, long-time resident of Ypsilanti, passed away at her home Monday, April 26, 1999. Gram was born November 22, 1900 in Detroit, MI, the daughter of James and Ida (Crosby) DeBaptiste. She came into the Order of the Eastern Star in 1944, was a member of the Palm Leaf Club and an active member of Post 408. She is survived by 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 32 great-great grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Lillian E. Herndon; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harry Starks; son, Charles L. Herndon; daughter, Elizabeth M. Gillum; stepson, Jim Starks; and grandson, Jerry Starks. The family hour will be 6-7 p.m. Friday, April 30, 1999 at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 1999 at Brown Chapel A.M.E. with the funeral at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Rev. Jerry Hatter will officiate. Interment will follow in Denton cemetery. The family wishes to request that in lieu of flowers, any contributions may be made to Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church Building Fund in memory of Glenna V. Starks.

Flynn, Maureen Frances, Ann Arbor, MI

Age 68, died Thursday, April 29, 1999 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. She was born on February 16, 1931 in Torrington, CT, the daughter of James and Marguerite (Balfe) Flynn. Maureen graduated from Brighton High School in 1949. She was employed with Detroit Edison in Ann Arbor for 38 years until her retirement in 1987. Maureen was the dear sister of James (Ellen) Flynn and sister-in-law of Pat Carney. She was preceded in death by sister, Peggy Carney. She is also survived by ten nieces and nephews. Services will be held Monday, May 3 at St. Francis of Assisi Church, in state from 10:30 a.m. with mass beginning at 11 a.m. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at MUEHLIG FUNERAL CHAPEL with a prayer service from 7:30 p.m. Contributions may be made to American Diabetes Foundation or to the charity of your choice.

Case, Lee O., Glendale, CA

Age 73, died Sunday, February 28, 1999 at home. He was born November 5, 1925 to Lee O. and Ava (Comin) Case. On February 27, 1960 he married Maria T. Vineyard, and she survives. After serving as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II, he was graduated from the University of Michigan in 1949 with a degree in journalism. He was editor of the Washtenaw Post-Gazette from 1949 to 1951. In 1951 he accepted a position as Director of Public Relations at the Edison Institute, now the Henry Ford Museum, and during his tenure there he acquired the Allegheny Locomotive, now the centerpiece of their trains collection. In 1954 he moved to Chicago to do fundraising for Crist and Brown of Kansas City. In 1959 he became the first-ever lay Vice-President of University Planning for Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, CA. He accepted a position as Vice President for Planning and Development at Occidental College in Los Angeles in 1969, and retired from there in 1990. In keeping with a lifelong love for transportation in general and the automobile in particular, he spent his retirement years as a docent at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, where he was able to indulge that passion. In addition to his wife, Mr. Case is survived by a daughter, Ingrid (Thomas) Dunlap of Santa Rosa, CA; two sons, L. Douglas Case of Dundee and John B. (Tecla) Case of Tecumseh; eight grandchildren, Thomas, Timothy, Peter and Kristin Dunlap, and Lauren, James, Alex and Eric Case; a great-granddaughter; and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John C. Case. Cremation has taken place. Fenz, Emanuel G., Professor Emeritus of History

Age 65, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, April 27, 1999 at the University of Michigan Hospital. Emanuel was a member of the Seventh-Day-Adventist Church on Packard Ave., where memorial services will be held Sunday, May 2, 1999 with the Reverend Dan Hall officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service, from 3 to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The Fenz family wishes to thank Dr. Richardson, M.D. and the nurses of Visiting Care for the dedicated service they gave our husband and father over the years. Duffell, Thelma Hanshaw

Ann Arbor, MI
Age 92, died April 28, 1999 at Glacier Hills Nursing Home In Ann Arbor, MI. Thelma was born July 21, 1906 in Beloit, WI to Nellie and Charles Hanshaw. On June 1, 1930 she married Dr. Richard Edwin Duffell in Chicago, IL. He preceded her in death in 1948. Thelma attended the University of Chicago. She started her career as Director of the Bethesda Day Nursery, then became Director of the Sarah Hackett Stevenson Memorial Home for single mothers and children, later served as the Volunteer Director at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago. She moved to Ann Arbor in 1963 and worked for six years as House Director for the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and for four years as Director of the Martha Cooke Residence Hall, retiring in 1973. She was loved and respected by both the students and staff at both residencies in Ann Arbor. Thelma is survived by her two loving children: Dr. David R. Duffell (Dorothy) of Arlington Heights, IL and Jeannine Duffell Buchanan (Dr. Robert A. Buchanan) of Ann Arbor; four grandchildren, Eric D. Duffell of Prague, Czech Republic, Lawrence R. Buchanan (Gillian) of North Bend, WA, Elizabeth Buchanan Sirman (Douglas) of Ann Arbor, Lt. Gregory D. Buchanan of San Diego, CA; and one great grand daughter, Isabella Sirman; by her beloved sister, Charlotte Miron of Wausau, WI; and sister-in-law Deborah Alvin of Tucson, AZ, plus several nieces and nephews. A brother, Armand Hanshaw, preceded her in death. A memorial service is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Saturday, May 8, 1999 at the First Presbyterian Church, Ann Arbor, conducted by the Reverend David E. Krehbiel. Arrangements have been made by the MUEHLIG CHAPEL, Ann Arbor. Cremation has taken place. Memorial contributions may be made to the Glacier Hills Fund, Nursing Services or the First Presbyterian Church Deacons Special Fund. An entombment service is also planned at the First Unitarian Church, Chicago, IL, at a later time.

Sikarskie, Professor David L., Houghton, MI

Professor David L. Sikarskie, 61, of Houghton was pronounced dead on arrival Sunday, April 25, 1999 at Portage Hospital following an apparent heart attack while biking. He was born August 3, 1937 in Marquette, a son of the late David and Anna Price Sikarskie and was a graduate of Petosky High School. He was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering, Columbia University with M.S. degree in Applied Mechanics and a Sc.D. in Applied Mechanics. He later became a professor at the University of Michigan and later became Chairman of the Department of Metallurgy, Mechanics and Material Science at Michigan State University. He came to Michigan Tech in 1984 to become Dean of Engineering. He presently held position of Professor and Director of Special Projects in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics. Dave received several honors and fellowships including the Benjamin Franklin National Scholar and the Tau Beta Pi outstanding Teacher Award. He was a member of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church and adviser to Lutheran collegians, the Kiwanis Club of the Copper Country, was active in the National Society of Professional Engineers, the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers, the Tau Beta Pi Society and was adviser for the Michigan Tech campus chapter, the Portage Lake Sportsman club and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Dave was married to the former Martha Banks on July 12, 1986 in Union, West Virginia. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Anya (Brian) Anderson of Seattle; two sons, David L. Jr. of East Lansing and James at home; two stepdaughters, Lari (Pat) Hayhoe of Mason, MI and Amy (Dan) Jones, also of Mason; six grandchildren; three sisters, Paula (Rick) Krempin of Rochester, NY. Judy (Gene) Smith of Waterford, CT, Jeanne (Armando) Lopez of Philipsburg, NJ; several aunts and uncles, including John and Anita Sikorsky of Lanse; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A son Paul preceded him in death in 1994. Funeral services were held Thursday morning at 11 a.m. at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Houghton, with Rev. Glenn Schwanke officiating. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy the family suggests donations to the Michigan Tech Fund or the American Cancer Society.

Tarrier, Richard T. Dick, Winston Salem, NC

(Formerly of Dexter)
passed away after a long illness on April 18, 1999. Survived by two children, Angel and Heather; brothers, William (Ann) and Mike (Cyd) Tarrier; sister, Mary Tarrier; and two nephews. Dick graduated from St. Thomas High School, University of Notre Dame, and Wake Forest Law School. He was very active in music, especially children's music and song writing. He produced two albums of children's music and wrote the theme to The Adventures of Milo & Otis. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dexter on Saturday, May 8th, 11 a.m. The family will receive friends at church one hour before the service. Local arrangements by Hosmer-Muehlig Funeral Chapel.

Johnson, Virginia (Jimmy) Till, Ypsilanti Twp., MI

Age 87, died Monday, April 26, 1999 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. She was born September 5, 1911, in Fort Wayne, Indiana the daughter of Fori and Laura Mae Till. On June 28, 1930, she married Larry A. Johnson in Fort Wayne, Indiana and he preceded her in death. Jimmy taught millenary and sewing classes. She was a retail buyer for a large chain of department stores. She also owned her own Bridal Salon Virginia Sews. Other occupations were fashion designer and wedding coordinator. Her greatest pleasure was in sewing for people and also cooking for them. Anyone who knew Jimmy for any length of time would be on the receiving end of some tasty treat. Many homes have her curtains or quilts displayed. Sewing, cooking, and music were her greatest joys. She enjoyed playing the organ and piano, and would start playing at anyone's request. She was a kind, gentle, and loving wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend. Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing Jimmy for very long saw these traits, and usually heard a good joke from her. She will be missed by all who's life she touched. Jimmy was a member of the Ypsilanti Historical Society, Women's Study Club and Ypsilanti Thrift Shop. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ypsilanti. Survivors include her daughter, LuCretia (Dan) Shook; and two sons, Keith (Denie) Johnson and Richard (Donna) Johnson; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Hal) Lawrence, Larry Johnson, Keith and Kelly Johnson, Christopher Smith and Douglas Shook; great-granddaughter, Isabelle Lawrence; one brother, George (Ruth) Till and many nieces, nephews, and adopted Family. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, May 6, 1999 at 3 p.m. at the Clark East Towers, 1550 E. Clark Rd., Ypsilanti. Age 56, passed away Saturday, May 1, 1999 at home. She was born February 21, 1943 in Johnstown, PA, the daughter of Elze and Delfa (Patterson) Keith. Survivors include significant other, Dennis Dolin of Ypsilanti; four daughters, Connie Curry of Whitmore Lake, MI, Dawn Curry of Ypsilanti, Jammie Heffulbower of Coldwater, MI, and Tammie Curry of Belleville; two sons, James of Marion, IN and Ted (Tina) Curry of Hamburg, MI; 20 grandchildren; two sisters, Sis (Reno) Greggi of Belleville and Patricia (Jim) Garrett of Plymouth, MI; three brothers, Jim Keith of Belleville, Donald Keith of Chippewa Lake, MI and Robert (Helen) Keith of Belleville; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 5, 1999 at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel with Rev. Bob White of the Grace Baptist Church in Belleville officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside cemetery, Belleville. Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Bower, Mary Lou, Chelsea, MI

Born Marie Louise Merriman of Jackson, MI, age 73, passed away Saturday, May 1, 1999 at Chelsea Community Hospital. Born in Port Huron, MI on August 28, 1925, she was the daughter of Henry and Vernie (Green) Merriman. She was born a Presbyterian, lived her younger years in Jackson, graduated from Michigan State College (now University) in 1947, took a job at L.S. Ayers & Co. in Indianapolis, In in the Advertising Display Dept., where she met Benjamin Robert Bower, her future husband. Mary Lou and Ben were married April 24, 1948 in Jackson, and they moved to Akron, OH where Ben attended art school. Their daughter, Elizabeth Ann, was born in Akron. Later, they moved to Jackson, and then to the Chelsea area, where Benjamin Henry, Donald Davis, and Joel Stuart were born. Mary Lou was a member of First United Methodist Church of Chelsea and Friends of the Chelsea District Library. She continued her education and became a kindergarten teacher at South Elementary (now South Meadows School) for 22 years. Survivors include her husband, Benjamin Robert Bower; four children, Elizabeth (John) Nalepa of Sevierville, TN, Ben (Sue) Bower of Chelsea, Don (Claire) Bower of Lincoln, NE, Joel (Anna) Bower of Kansas City, MO; six grandchildren; and four nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 5, 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, Chelsea, with Rev. Richard Dake officiating. Burial will follow at Downington cemetery in Deckerville, MI. The family will receive friends at COLE FUNERAL CHAPEL Monday 7-9 p.m., Tuesday 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. and at the church Wednesday 10-11 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Covenant House or Chelsea First United Methodist Church.

McCrindle, Robert Bud, Whitmore Lake, MI

Age 71, died suddenly at home, Saturday, May 1, 1999. Bud was born February 13, 1928 the son of the late Robert and Edna (Cline) McCrindle in Pontiac, MI. In 1958 he married his loving wife Barbara. Bud was retired from the Ann Arbor Railroad, where he worked for many years in construction and repair. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Robert Red McCrindle of Whitmore Lake and daughter, Delores Vandenbosch of Carr, MI; two sisters, Nellie Robbins of Wyandotte and Rosemary White of Richmond, MO; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, William McCrindle and one sister, Delores Ersery. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 4 at BELL-BOREK FUNERAL HOME, 7425 M-36, Hamburg, MI. The family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Pontiac.

Brown, Professor Gerald Saxon, Ann Arbor, MI

Age 88, passed away peacefully at Karrington on May 1, 1999. Gerald was born February 25, 1911 in Port Maitland, Nova Scotia, Canada to Catherine and George Brown. He graduated from Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia in 1932 and was a high school principal in Nova Scotia. In 1937, he was admitted as a doctoral candidate in history at the University of Minnesota. In 1940, he received a scholarship to continue his research at the Clements Library in Ann Arbor. In 1941, he married Dorothy Myer and from 1942-1945, served as an officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force. In 1945, he was seconded to the Canadian State Department, but returned to Ann Arbor in 1946 to complete his research. He received his Ph. D. from the University of Minnesota in 1948. He became a U.S. citizen in 1954. He spent 34 years as a Professor of History at the University of Michigan. His specialty was the history of the British Empire -he published several books and numerous articles. He received Fulbright Fellowship to study and teach in England in 1956-57. Professor Brown loved teaching and was devoted to his students. He was pre-deceased by an infant daughter, Patricia, and by six brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and his daughter, Catherine Andrejak (Gary). Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, May 5, at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Arbor Hospice or the Salvation Army. Muehlig Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.

Siemering, Eveline Rogers, Ann Arbor, MI

Passed on peacefully at Glacier Hills Nursing Center on April 29, 1999, a few months short of her 100th birthday. She was born October 27, 1899 in Washta, Iowa, the daughter of Upton Clark and Bertha Discher Rogers. She married William H. Siemering on February 14, 1925 in Washta, IA. He preceded her in death in 1973. Sheattended Drake University in Des Moines where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. A disastrous fire which destroyed her fathers drug store forced her to interrupt her studies. After helping her family for a year, she left for Minneapolis, working while attending MacPhail School of Dramatic Arts, where she met her future husband. Following graduation, they toured with Chautauqua, bringing culture under canvas to people living on the plains of Minnesota, North and South Dakota and Iowa. Her favorite play in which she performed was Edward Petleys Pair of Sixes. The couple stopped touring when Chautauqua began to fade with the development of the radio and movies. They settled briefly in her husbands native LeSueur, MN then West Salem, WI where he operated a movie theater and she was drama coach at the high school. They eventually settled in Madison, where Mr. Siemering was appointed the first Veterans Representative for the U.S. Employment Service for Wisconsin. Famous mid-western artist John Stuart Curry's English wife invited Eveline Siemering and the ladies who lived near their lovely stone farmhouse outside of Madison to tea and to participate sending Bundles to Britain by knitting heavy Navy wool sweaters and socks for the British Navy during the early months of World War II. This home and Mr. Currys studio can be seen in his Wisconsin Landscape, 1938-9. A devout Christian Scientist since 1928, Eveline Siemering (pronounced Ehv-ah-leen See-mer-ing) was a member of First Church of Christ Scientist, Madison, for over 40 years before moving to Ann Arbor in 1977 to be near her daughter Gerane Weinreich and her family. Her church was an important part of her life and she served as Reader, Sunday School Superintendent and worked in the Christian Science Reading Room both in Madison and Ann Arbor. She contributed numerous articles to Christian Science publications including the Christian Science Monitor. In 1985 she moved to a Christian Science retirement community in Milford, Michigan but returned to Ann Arbor in May 1994 following a stroke. She had one sister, Elvira (Donald) Risewick of Ames, IA who preceded her in death in 1984. She was a cousin of Moses Rogers, an Ann Arbor merchant and his brother Randolph Rogers, the famous sculptor. She was also a member of the D.A.R. While residing in Ann Arbor, she was a member of the Ann Arbor Women's City Club. She thoroughly enjoyed the exploits and achievements of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and children-in-law. She was especially proud of her youngest son, Bill Siemering who created National Public Radio and its popular programs, All Things Considered, Fresh Air and Soundprint. She made many friends throughout her long life and was well loved by all who knew her. She is survived by four children, Gerane (Gabriel) Weinreich of Ann Arbor, MI, Paul (Carol) Siemering of Boston, MA, Bill (Lucretia) Siemering of Philadelphia, PA and Gretchen Siemering of Minneapolis, MN; ten grandchildren, Catherine Benamou of Ann Arbor, MI, Marc Benamou of St. Marys City, MD, Dan (Nancy) Weinreich of Westwood, MA, Rebecca (Tara) Weinreich of Los Angeles, CA, Natalie Benamou (Sergio Scotti) of Sleepy Hollow, IL, Karla (Peter) Bryant of Bowling Green, KY, Sarah Siemering of Philadelphia, PA, Alice (Robert) Thomas of Bothell, WA, Tina Castagnino (Philip) of Natick, MA, Ana Siemering (Christopher Murphy) of Waltham, MA; and ten great-grandchildren, Thomas and Stephen Weinreich, Aiyana and Emma Lao, Shoshanah Weinreich, Arianna Benamou Scotti, Thomas Bryant, Nicholas Castagnino, Brian and Elizabeth Thomas. Cremation has taken place with the ashes interred in Botsford cemetery. At her request, no memorial service is planned. Arrangements by Muehlig Funeral Chapel -Ann Arbor. Rhodes, Philip Martin, Colorado Springs, CO

(Husband of Elizabeth Anne Pitcher, formally of Ann Arbor)Philip Martin Rhodes, 34, died April 16, 1999, of injuries received in an automobile accident, in Colorado Springs, CO. He was born April 1, 1965, in Shirebrook, England. He became a naturalized citizen while serving five years in the U.S. Coast Guard. Phil was a graduate of Northern Colorado University. He was married June 15, 1996, to Elizabeth Anne Pitcher, in Ann Arbor. Phil was an outdoor recreation specialist working for the U.S. Army at Fort Carson, CO. He was instrumental in the development of the base's award winning outdoor adventure program. Friends and colleagues say that he was at his best teaching others the skills needed to tackle the rivers and mountains of Colorado. He was an excellent kayaker, river rafting guide, skier, ice and rock climber. He referred to himself to as a fun hog. During a memorial service in Colorado Springs, Major General John M. Riggs, Commander of Fort Carson, presented the Commanders Award for Civilian Service to his family. He is survived by his wife; his parents, Stuart and Joan Rhodes of Grand Junction, CO; and a sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Darran Downing, of Aurora, CO. Following cremation, under the watchful eyes of big horn sheep, family and friends returned Phil to his beloved Arkansas River. Pryor, Millard H.,

A well-known businessman, died at the age of 97 at the Glacier Hills Nursing Center on May 2, 1999. Born in Cairo, Illinois, he received a B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1925 and then joined the first class at the University's new Business School, where he obtained his M.B.A. Several years after graduating he married Mary Shapiro, a journalist, and their marriage lasted 59 years until her death. In 1932 he joined the Renown Stove Company of Owosso, Michigan, as Vice President, and in 1939 he became President of the Barnes Manufacturing Company, a position he held until 1956. During World War II he took a leave of absence from business and became a Commander in the U.S. Navy, serving in a variety of posts both in the U.S. and Japan. In 1956, he retired from business and moved to Ann Arbor. From 1962-65he worked as a full-time consultant to the U.S. Agency for International Development in India, Korea, the Philippines, and Thailand. Several years ago he married Geraldine Knight Green of St. Louis Missouri. During his retirement he was an active member of the Rotary Club and other organizations in Ann Arbor and, in addition, continued a number of philanthropic activities. These included a special prize in entrepreneurship at the University's Business School and a variety of local and national charities. In 1979 he received an honorary degree of Doctor of Business Administration from Albion College for his half-century service on their Board of Directors. Millard Pryor is survived by his wife; his twin sons, Frederic and Millard, Jr.; and his three grandchildren, Daniel Pryor, Elizabeth Bradley, and Esther Pryor. A memorial service for Millard Pryor will be held in the Chapel of First Methodist Church (120 S. State St, Ann Arbor) on Wednesday, May 5 at 2 p.m. Contributions in his memory may be sent to Peace Neighborhood Center, 1111 Maple Rd North, Ann Arbor
