Mr. Kenneth Lysiak
Mr. Kenneth P. Lysiak, 45 of Gaylord died Tuesday, February 3, 2004. Ken was born in Paterson, New Jersey on March 17. 1958, the son of Anthony & Dolores (VonGenichten) Lysiak. He was raised in Paterson, NJ and was a graduate of East Side High School. In 1977 he moved to Detroit. On May 9, 1987 in Waterford, he married the former Cynthia Vaught, who survives. They later moved to Clarkston, where they lived until 1991 when they moved to Gaylord. He had previously worked for Listvan Plumbing & Heating and was currently employed with Family Heating & Cooling. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing and just spending time with his son, Anthony. He is survived by his wife, Cindi; son, Anthony; mother, Dolores Lysiak; brother and sisters; Garrett (Diane) of Minnesota, Dennis (Susan) of Florida, Robert of New Jersey, Marylynn Lysiak of New Jersey, Deborah (Joseph) Kenney of New Jersey; mother-in-law, Helen Williams of Michigan; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Anthony in 1999. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004 at 2 p.m. from the Nelson Funeral Home, Rev. John McCracken, officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday from 6-8 p.m. and on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Anthony Lysiak Trust Fund, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Mrs. Verna M. Mayer
Verna M. Mayer, 87 of Gaylord, Michigan died Tuesday, January 13, 2004. Mrs. Mayer, the daughter of Gustav and Anna (Kinker) Smith, was born in Lawrenceburg, Indiana on January 13, 1917 and moved to Gaylord in 1984 from Lawrenceburg. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Gaylord, Michigan. She loved animals, especially her dog and enjoyed gardening and fishing. Mrs. Mayer was a hard worker, her life up north, revolved around restoration and upkeep of the Mayer family residence. Memorial services will be held in the spring in Lawrenceburg, Indiana with interment in Dillsboro, Indiana. Mrs. Mayer was preceded in death by her husbands Manuel Schulenburg in 1971, and John Mayer in 2001. She was also preceded in death by 3 brothers, Melvin, Donald and Elmer Smith, and 1 sister, Betty Smith. She is survived by 3 sisters, Doris Strimple of Aurora, IN, Marian Rucker of Lawrenceburg, IN, and Alverta Smith; stepchildren, Jeanne Nelson of Grand Rapids, and Janney (Dr. Jeffrey) Simpson of Connecticut; nephews, David Schulenberg of Chicago, Merle Schulenborg of Indianapolis, IN, and Wayne Schlenborg of Memphis, TN; nieces, Joyce Neuendorf of Knapp, WI, and Roseanne (Charles) Caniff of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, John (Connie) Nelson, Sara Nelson, Marcus and Matthew Simpson; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Amanda and Kaitlyn. Memorial contributions may be made to the Otsego County Animal Shelter or to the charity of your choice through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Mr. Robert E. Morse
Robert E. Morse, 74 of Palm Harbor, Florida died Sunday, January 11, 2004 at his daughter’s home in Gaylord. Mr. Morse was born in Grand Rapids on November 4, 1929, the son of Maynard and Edla Morse. He retired from United Airlines and traveled extensively throughout the world. He was a member of the Palm Harbor Presbyterian Church, the Retired Untied Airlines Assoc. (RUAA) and the Wayne Masonic Lodge #112, the Scottish Rite and was a 32nd Degree Mason. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at 1PM from the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord, The Reverend Mary McClure, officiating. Burial will take place at Acacia Park cemetery in Beverly Hills, Michigan. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord will be held on Tuesday from 5-8 PM and on Wednesday from 12 PM until the time of services. Mr. Morse is survived by his wife, Annie; his daughter, Diane (Mike) Minor of Gaylord, MI; 4 grandchildren, Emily, Allison, Justin and Hayley. Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation for research through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Mrs. Marian Oliver
Marian E. Oliver, 78, of Vanderbilt, died Feb. 16, 2004 at McReynolds Hall in Gaylord. Mrs. Oliver was born June 3, 1925 in Ypsilanti, the daughter of Alvin D. and Mabel(Gault) Maulbetsch. She graduated valedictorian of her class from Vanderbilt High School in 1943. Mrs. Oliver retired in 1988 after a long career as administrative secretary for the Vanderbilt Area School. For many years she served as treasurer of the Vanderbilt Community Church, and served the church as organist and member of the choir. She also held the position of clerk for the village of Vanderbilt and Corwith Township for many years, and was a life time member of The Order of Eastern Star. Mrs. Oliver is survived by her four loving children and their spouses; Connie and Harvey Letson of Vanderbilt, Michael and Jacqueline Oliver of Austin, Minn., Patrick and Erma Oliver of Kensington, N.H., and Bailey and Delores Oliver of Potterville. She is also survived by one sister, Marjorie and her husband, Joe, Ozimek of Taylor; and a brother Jack Maulbetsch and his wife, Zola, of Vanderbilt. Mrs. Oliver leaves nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild who were the delight of her life. Her granddaughter Becki (Kent) Strawderman was her primary and loving caregiver in her home at 410 W. Main St., Vanderbilt for the past seven years. She is also survived by many niecs and nephews. There will be calling hours at the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18. A funeral service will be held at the Vanderbilt Community Church at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19, the Rev. Fred Nose officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Vanderbilt Community Church. Mrs. Oliver will be fondly rememberd by all who knew her.

Mr. Samuel Ordiway
Mr. Samuel L. Ordiway, 80 of Gaylord died Wednesday, February 11, 2004 at his home. Mr. Ordiway was born in Gladwin on March 30, 1923. He had spent most of his life in Pickford and moved to Gaylord 18 years ago. He was a veteran of the United States Army and spent 2 years overseas. Mr. Ordiway was a kind, loving man who enjoyed fishing with his grandkids. He is survived by his wife, Joann “Caroline”; 3 children, Alan David (Sharon Strait) of Holt, Christine (Rod) Nettleton of Dimondale, Michael (Wendy Morgridge) of Mancelona; 6 grandchildren, Tim & Tony Nettleton, Matt & Mitch Ordiway, Amanda & Jeremiah Ordiway; 3 great-grandchildren, Thackston, Corrinne & Derek; 1 brother, Luther of Sault Ste, Marie. He was preceded in death by his brother Duane. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2004 at 3 p.m. from the Nelson Funeral Home, in Gaylord. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of services. Mr. Jack Trip
Jack C. Tripp, age 54 of Gaylord died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004. Mr. Tripp was born on Jan. 16, 1950 in Grand Rapids, MI., where he lived the majority of his life, and also married the former Jean Applegate on July 12, 1969. He moved to Lake Arrowhead in 1985, and is part owner of the James N. Tripp Concrete and Construction Inc. Company. He was a dedicated Detroit Lions football fan, enjoyed listening to the “oldies” style of music, and was a member of Peace Lutheran Church. Most importantly, he loved his grandchildren, and especially his work. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, Feb. 6th at 1:00 p.m. from the Nelson Funeral Home, Inc., Pastor Thomas Mammoser officiating. Visitation at the funeral home will be on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. and on Friday from noon until the time of service. Mr. Tripp is survived by his wife, Jean; children, Teresa (Mark) Robideau of Gaylord, Martin of Gaylord, Mike (Kristina Hyde) of Gaylord, and William. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren, Andrew, Martin II, and Eric Tripp, Madison Tripp, Katie Phillips; 2 brothers, Michael Tripp of Gaylord, and William (Heather) Tripp of Grand Rapids. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward & Dolma Tripp. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Assoc. or the American Cancer Society through the Nelson Funeral Home, Inc.

Matthew Whitman
Matthew L. Whitman, 17 of Vanderbilt died Saturday, January 24, 2004. He was born in Gaylord on July 20, 1986 and lived in Otsego County all his life. Matthew was a senior at Vanderbilt High School, valedictorian of his class, vice-president of his class, and President of the National Honor Society. He was a member of the varsity basketball and baseball teams as well. He earned a presidential academic four-year scholarship to Saginaw Valley State University where he planned to attend in the fall. Matthew loved his jeep, which he and his father restored. He enjoyed four-wheeling and “mudding” and just hanging out with his friends. He is survived by his parents, Debbie and Gary Whitman; brothers and sister, Jason, Amy, and Trevor; maternal grandparents, Ray and Mary Kalamejski of Vanderbilt; paternal grandparents, Casey and Robert Antle of Florida; two aunts and three uncles; and girlfriend, Melissa McMillan of Gaylord. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at 11 a.m. from Vanderbilt High School, Father John McCracken officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Hill cemetery. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord will be held on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Matthew Whitman Memorial Fund, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Mrs. Jessie Irene Williams
Jessie Irene Williams, 91 of Gaylord died Monday, January 19, 2004 at Tendercare in Gaylord. Mrs. Williams was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada on October 5, 1912 and moved to Gaylord in 1993 from Dearborn. She was a wonderful grandmother and loved to knit. She attended St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Gaylord. Graveside services will be held in the spring at Otsego Lake Township cemetery. Mrs. Williams is survived by her daughter, Sandra Lee (Thomas M.) Allison of Gaylord; 3 grandchildren, Anne (Richard) Guy of Grand Haven, James (Kimberly) Allison of Grand Haven, Susan Allison of Gaylord; 5 great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Blossom (Ralph) Hocken of Ontario; sister-in-law, Marjorie Angle of Ontario; 3 nieces; and 2 nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, William M. Williams; her grandson George L.B. Guy; 2 brothers; 1 sister; 1 brother-in-law; and 4 sisters-in-law. Memorial contributions may be made to the Otsego County Habitat for Humanity, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Mr. John E. Brown
John E. Brown, age 90, of Johannesburg, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004 at his home. He was born in Cheboygan County on March 27, 1914. Mr. Brown was a logger and farmer. He was a volunteer firefighter for many years and fire chief for the last 28 years before retiring. His many activities included the annual Johannesburg 4th of July Celebration fireworks display which he set off. He was a champion cross cutter and was excellent with an ax. He participated in many competitions including the 4th of July in Johannesburg and also in Lewiston. He loved to hunt and fish and was an outdoorsman. Mr. Brown is survived by his wife of 72 years, Frances; his children, Lester (Ruth) of Clio, Roy (Martha) of Clio, Willard (Sharon) of Johannesburg, Loretta Lee of Gaylord, Jack (Pat) of Midland, Lou (Dick) Mulholland of Atlanta, Bonnie (John) Eaton of Bay City; 20 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Ethel Morrison, Clarence (Doris) Brown, Charles Brown, Norman Brown, Dorothy (Russell) Phillips, Gordon (Betty) Brown, Hazel (Charles) Thomas, Gladys (Wes) Spiegelmeyer, and Leslie (Jackie) Brown. John was the eldest of the family. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Betty Brown and brother-in-law, Harold Phillips. Mr. Brown is preceded in death by his son, Bobbie Brown; son-in-law, Robert Lee; parents, Thaddeus and Edna (Fales) Brown; brother, Edward Brown; sister, Geraldine Phillips; brother-in-law, Clarence Morrison; and sister-in-law, Virginia Brown. Funeral Services for Mr. Brown will be held on Tuesday, September 21, 2004 at 11 AM from the Hetherton Reformed Presbyterian Church in Johannesburg. The Rev. Milton Harrington officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Hope cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday from 2-8 PM and on Tuesday at the church from 10 AM until time of service. Mrs. Laverne M. Stenke
Laverne M. Stenke, 78 of Wolverine, died Saturday, September 18, 2004 at Hospice House in Cheboygan. Mrs. Stenke was born in Memphis, TN on May 25, 1926. She was raised in Tennessee and as a teenager moved to Toledo, Ohio. On March 27, 1948, in Toledo, she married Fred G. Stenke. Mrs. Stenke worked for the Ford Motor Company in Monroe. In 1968 the Stenke’s moved to Ellsworth and later moved to Wolverine in 1984. Mrs. Stenke loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Mrs. Stenke is survived by her husband, Fred G. and her son Dale (Georgia) of Traverse City. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Tuesday, September 21, 2004 at 4 PM from the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord, Rev. Thomas Mammoser officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 12 Noon until the time of services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Straits Area Hospice through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Mrs. Marie Beattie
Marie Beattie, 79, of Lewiston, died Monday, December 13, 2004 at her home. Mrs. Beattie was born January 14, 1925 in Detroit the daughter of the late Ferdinand & Clara (Riddler) Wintermuth. On June 7, 1942 she married Frank H. Beattie, who preceded her in death in 1995. She is survived by her children, Catherine (John) Shamblin of Shelby Township, Frances (Carl) Hart of Lewiston, Julie (Ken) Howe of Macomb Twp., Jerry (Sue) Beattie of Lewiston; 9 grandchildren, Keith (Laura) Shamblin, Karen (James) McCullum, Kevin (Laura) Shamblin, Carl G. Hart, William (Cindy) Howe, Kenneth R., II (Angela) Howe, Steven (Lynnette) Erlandson, Heidi (Toby) Ewing and Gene (Melisa) Erlandson; 12 great-grandchildren (with #13 on the way); sister-in-law, Shirley Wintermuth of Sterling Heights; and many nieces and nephews. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Thursday, Dec 16, 2004 at 11 a.m. from the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord, Rev. Toby Stadden, officiating. Burial will follow at Albert Township cemetery in Lewiston. Mr. Gerald R. “Jerry” Benaway
Gerald R. “Jerry” Benaway, 46 of Gaylord died Sunday, January 9, 2005. Jerry was born in Gaylord on December 31, 1958 and had lived in Gaylord most of his life. He was an auto mechanic and had a passion to “fix everything”. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved spending time with his grandson. Jerry is survived by son, Eric (Jennifer) of Gaylord; Grandson, Baylee; parents, Roy and Glada Benaway of Gaylord; brother, Lyle (Donna) of Gaylord; nephews, David and Brian; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Thursday, January 13, 2005 at 1 p.m. from the Nelson Funeral Home, Ted Engel, Jr., officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 6-9 p.m. and on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Family Services, through the Nelson Funeral Home.

Mr. Curt Brown
William Curtis Brown, Sr., age 62 of Gaylord died Friday, December 10, 2004. Mr. Brown was born in Jamaica, New York on December 2, 1942. He was raised in New York and later enlisted in the United States Army. During his tour of duty he spent a number of years in Alaska and flew otters while serving in Vietnam. He retired from the military in 1997 having achieved the rank of Major. Mr. Brown lived in Columbia, South Carolina and in 1997 retired from the Columbia US Post Office. The Brown’s have been living in Gaylord since November of 1999. Mr. Brown was fascinated with trains and airplanes, but his first love was family. He was currently serving as vice president of the Gaylord School Board and was a past president of the PTC for the Gaylord Middle School. He was very active in Gaylord Middle School activities often volunteering for concession sales at the basketball games. He was instrumental in the development of the South Carolina Railroad Museum, a member of the Long Island Chapter of the Sunrise Trail (Long Island railroad), member of the National Railroad Historical Society, member of the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation, member of the Army Otter Caribou Association, past treasurer of the National Association of Letter Carriers, member of the Reserve Officers Association and member of the Whaley Street United Methodist Church in Columbia, South Carolina. While living in South Carolina he was an instructor at the 3287th Reserve Officer Training School. Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Joan; his children, Robert Scott (Judy) Brown of Hawaii, William Curtis Jr. (Jeanine) Brown of Georgia, Stephanie Avery (Steve) Cooper of Tennessee, Clinton Curtis Brown of Gaylord; grandchildren, Paige and Jacob; brothers, Herbert “Bart” (Arlene) Brown of New York, Rodger (Elizabeth McBride) Brown of Georgia; several nieces and nephews. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Wednesday, December 15, 2004 at 1:00 PM from the First United Methodist Church in Gaylord, Reverend John Naile, officiating. Burial will take place at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Columbia, South Carolina. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Tuesday from 3-7 PM and at the church on Wednesday beginning at 12 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord MI 49734.
