Ward, Eveylena Mathes, Sumpter Township, MI

Eveylena was born April 28, 1922 in Clarksdale, Mississippi. She died May 4, 1999 at St. Josephs Mercy Hospital - Hospice Unit, Ann Arbor, Michigan. She was the fourth of twelve children born to Oliver Mathes and Irene Davenport Mathes. The family moved to Michigan when Eveylena was a child and settled in Pontiac. Eveylena attended Pontiac Public Schools. Eveylena married Julius M. Ward, Sr. (Mickey) and they were parents to Margaret and Julius, Jr. Eveylena was a quick learner and, without the resources for formal training, became the first African-American doctors assistant in the Pontiac area, taught and employed by Dr. Mansfield L. Spears, the first African-American doctor in Pontiac. Dr. Spears made various childhood immunization vaccines available to Eveylena as they were developed and approved, and she took it upon herself to vaccinate children in her family and neighborhood. Eveylena enjoyed reading and had a special fondness for the Bible, medical information and self-help books throughout her adult life. Since moving from Detroit, Michigan to Sumpter in June, 1996, Eveylena has been part of the Mt. Hermon Baptist and Christian Love Fellowship church families and was received in these fellowships with much love and kindness. She greatly enjoyed attending Church and loved sacred music. Eveylena was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her devoted children, Margaret Crawford (Samuel, Sr.) of Sumpter Township and Julius M. Ward, Jr. (Patrice) of Detroit, Michigan; ten grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; five sisters; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 8, 1999, 1 p.m. at the New Bethel Baptist Church, 174 Branch Street, Pontiac, Michigan. Friends may call at the Crawford home, 49372 Arkona, Thursday and Friday, 3-7 p.m.

Austin, William A., Ferndale, MI

Died May 6, 1999 at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. He was born June 16, 1929 in Detroit, MI. He was married Elizabeth Laudenbach on May 24, 1958 and she survives. Survivors in addition to his spouse include: son, Wayne E. (Geri) Austin, North Carolina; daughter, Alison E. Austin, Ann Arbor; grandchildren, Cassandra, Tracy, William; great grandchild, Madeleine. Mr. Austin worked for the Detroit Zoological Park as a Curator in Education for 27 years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of the VFW. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea. In accordance with his wishes, Mr. Austins body was donated to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Contributions may be made to Docent Association, C/O Detroit Zoological Park, P.O. Box 39, Royal Oak, MI 48067-0039. Arrangements by SPAULDING & CURTIN FUNERAL DIRECTORS L.L.C., Ferndale.

Hawker, Melvin William, Georgetown, KY

Age 89, died May 3, 1999 in Lexington, KY. He was the owner of Hawker Tractor & Implements in Milan. Survivors include a daughter, Roxanna Hawker of Ann Arbor. A private burial will be held at Michigan Memorial Park, Flat Rock, MI. Arrangements by COLE FUNERAL CHAPEL, Chelsea.

Hanselmann, Wilbur E., Tecumseh, MI

Formerly of Dexter
passed away May 6, 1999, age 80. He was born July 30, 1918 in Dexter to Christian J. and Marion E. (Robards) Hanselmann. He moved to Tecumseh 14 years ago. On August 19, 1939 he married Mildred C. Krumrei, she preceded him in death on December 20, 1989. Also preceded in death by a daughter Judith Stone. Survived by a son, Wilbur C. (Barbara) Hanselman; daughter, Joyce Hanselmann; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; a brother, Clarence J. (Helen) Hanselmann; several nieces and nephews. Wilbur retired from Chrysler Proving Grounds. Services will be held from Hosmer-Muehlig Funeral Home on Monday, May 10 at 1 p.m.Interment Forest Lawn cemetery. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 6-8 p.m., and on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

Rasmussen, Homer Stanley, Green Oak Township, MI

Age 77, died Thursday, May 6, 1999 at home. Homer was born on August 24, 1921 the son of the late Elmer and Anna Mae (Douglass) Rasmussen. He married Gloria Faye Carter in Washington, D.C. on March 28, 1947 and she survives. Also surviving are two children, Sharen (Don) Heaston of Charlotte, NC, and Stan (Sally) Rasmussen of Hamburg; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren; and brother, Douglass (Clara) Rasmussen of Hamburg. Homer was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra, and granddaughter, Kim. Homer was a veteran of World War II. He later farmed the family land until 1956. Then he went into the gravel business, which evolved to Rasmussen Salvage in Green Oak Township. Private family visitation was held on Friday. At Homers request, there will be no service. Popp, George Walter, Whitmore Lake, MI

Formerly of Ann ArborAge 68, died Thursday, May 6, 1999 at home. George was born on February 25, 1931 the son of the late George Joseph and Anna Violet (Laskowski) Popp. He married Marie Popp in Petaluma, CA. on November 14, 1954, and she survives. George graduated from Central High School in South Bend, IN. He was in the United States Air Force during the Korean War earning several medals of honor. He worked as an electronics technician for Bendix in South Bend before moving to Ann Arbor in 1962. He retired in 1990 from University of Michigan as an elevator mechanic. Also surviving are his children, Kevin (Kelley) Popp of West Bloomfield, Chistine Ann (Jay) Miles of Whitmore Lake, Cathleen Annette (David) Kuebler, of Buckley, MI. and Connie Marie (John) Michalak, of Whitmore Lake; 5 grandchildren, and sisters Shirley Miller and Lilian Evans. He was preceded in death by parents and sister Dorothy Popp. Memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 11th at 6:00p.m. at West Side United Methodist Church, 900 S. 7th street, Ann Arbor. In lieu of flower, donations are suggested to Salvation Army, 100 Arbana, Ann Arbor, or Arbor Hospice, 2366 Oak Valley Dr., Ann Arbor. Funeral arrangements made through Bell-Borek Funeral Home, 7425 M-36, Hamburg.

Crawford, Bobby Louis, Kenton, OH

Age 62, passed away May 6, 1999 at Ravenswood Nursing Home, Kenton, Ohio. Born April 5, 1937 in Hickman, Tennesee to William Louis Crawford and Sarina Erline Jones Crawford Orsbon. Mr. Crawford was a retired Contractor, he also was a Specialty Canoneer with the National Guard of Ohio 1955-1956. Survivors include, wife, Bevely Sue Schultz Crawford; sons, James Louis Crawford of Kenton, Ohio, and Jeffrey Allen Crawford of Newport, Michigan; daughters, Rita Mae Roberts of Michigan & Marcia Ann Whitlock of Ann Arbor, Michigan; eleven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; brothers, Harold Crawford of Springfield, Tennesse & Finis Crawford of Granola, Kansas; sister, Mary Hull of Granola, Kansas; step-father, Roy Orsbon of Ashley City, Tennessee. Mr. Crawford was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter Loretta Sue Crawford. Funeral services will be Monday, May 10, 1999, 11 a.m. at HEINLEIN-BROWN FUNERAL HOME, Logan, OH with Rev. Fred Richards officiating. Burial will follow at Smith Chapel cemetery, Logan, Ohio., May 10, 199. Visitation will be held 1-6 pm. Sunday at the funeral home.

Age 55, passed away suddenly Friday, May 7, 1999 at his home. He was born July 15, 1943 in Martin, KY the son of Sammie Ray and Rebecca (Derossett) Skeans. Survivors include his loving wife, Ginny; five children, Gary Cooper of Georgia, Jimmie Cooper of Marquette, MI, Becca (Collins) Kehrli of Dallas, TX, David (Kim) Skeans of Canton, MI and Louise Rubel of Milan, MI; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Kennith Skeans of Morehead, KY and Frank Skeans of Georgetown, KY; one sister, Virginia Martin of Martin, KY; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Johnny. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, May 10, 1999 at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE, Moore Memorial Chapel with Rev. Ron Stewart of Willow Run Church of God officiating. Burial will follow. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Envelopes are available at the funeral home where friends may greet the family 6-9 p.m. Saturday and 2-4 & 6-9 p.m. Sunday.

Connelly of Whitmore Lake, MI, and Eugene M. Connelly of Ruthfordton, N.C.; and several nieces, nephews, friends and Companion Harry Adams of Zephyrhills, FL and Inkster, MI.

Cumby, Maxine W., Chicago, IL

Age 70, died Wednesday, May 5, 1999 in Chicago, IL of heart disease. Ms. Cumby was born February 25, 1929 in Ann Arbor to George and Ena Hines. She married Harry J. Cumby, April 5, 1952. They divorced June 3, 1985. Ms. Cumby is survived by her former husband; four daughters, Harryetta of Ann Arbor, Jacquelyn of Dallas, TX, Brenda of Chicago, IL, and Ruth Jones (Franklin) of Detroit; one son, John of St. Louis, MO; two granddaughters, Erica Cumby of Dallas, TX, and Dominique Jackson of St. Louis, MO; her sister-in-law, Evelyn Kyle of Inkster; and dear friend, Ruth King of Ypsilanti. Funeral services will be held at LUCILLE'S FUNERAL HOME, 411 S. Adams, Ypsilanti, Tuesday, May 11, at 11 a.m. Burial following at United Memorial Gardens.

Mercier, Alma Rose (St. John),

Age 87, went to be with the Lord May 7, 1999. Alma was preceded in death by her beloved husband Frank, and her parents. Alma is survived by one sister, Valorie St. John of California; her son, Bradley Dean (Kathleen) Mercier of Jackson; daughter, Nancy Becerra; four grandchildren, Jeffrey and David Mercier, Jessie and Virginia Becerra; one step-grandson, Jeremy Hughes. Alma retired from Edwards Brothers and was a member of St. Joseph Church in Dexter. Alma lived at Lurie Terrace before moving to Jackson. Alma will be sadly missed by her family and many friends. Funeral services will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dexter, Tuesday, May 11, 1999 at 11 a.m. with The Reverend Father Brendan Walsh presiding. Interment in St. Joseph cemetery. Visitation will be held at HOSMER-MUEHLIG FUNERAL CHAPEL today from 5 to 7 p.m. and on Monday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. with a scripture service Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Joseph Catholic Church.
