Hunt, Jim, Ann Arbor, MI

Jim Hunt, Head Athletic Trainer at the U of M from 1947-68, died Sunday, May 9th at the age of 95. He is survived by his sisters, Marcella McGee of St. Paul, MN, Katherine Surber of Rochester, NY, Mary Nelson of Woodbury, MN, and Mildred Partenheimer of Pleasant Hill, CA; his brother, Wilfred Hunt of St. Paul, MN; his daughters, Joan Hunt Kobus of Ypsilanti, MI and Mary Hunt Darby of Brighton, MI; grandsons, James Aubrey Darby of Ann Arbor, MI, and Tom Darby of Independence, KY. Mr. Hunt was preceded in death by two wives, Florence Catherine Hunt and Marian Owen Hunt, sister, Helen Lanz, son, Joseph Hunt, and grandson, Joseph Darby. Born in Greene Isle, MN in 1903, he graduated from Humbolt High School in St. Paul. He enlisted in the Marine Corps and served on the USS Seattle in the early 20's. He enrolled at the University of Minnesota and studied Athletic Training while working as a student assistant to the athletic teams. Graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1929 he taught science and coached football at South St. Paul High School. After earning a Physical Therapy degree from the Sister Kenny Institute, he worked as an Assistant Trainer at the University of Minnesota. He became Head Trainer there in 1942 until his departure in 1946, following Fritz Crisler in Michigan. He served as Head Trainer at Michigan from 1947-68. Mr. Hunt was a master at diagnosing and treating injuries. He gained national recognition for his ingenuity in the use of devices to protect and deter injuries. He was the first trainer to use fiberglass in injury protective devices. His dedication to, and love of Michigan athletics aided in the development of thousands of the countries best student athletes. Jim received many rewards during his long career, but his biggest reward was working with incredible young student athletes. Jim will be sorely missed as friend, trainer, brother, father, and grandfather. He touched many lives. The family will be receiving friends of Mr. Hunt at St. Francis Catholic Church in Ann Arbor on Thursday, May 13 at 10 a.m. Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. with the funeral following at St. Thomas cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Alzheimer's Association

Thomas, Rubena, Ann Arbor, MI

Age 88, died Monday, May 10, 1999 at her home after a short illness. She was born May 28, 1910 in Ann Arbor. She was united in marriage to Conrad Thomas; he preceded her in death in 1969. Rubena was a member of Bethlehem United Church of Christ in Ann Arbor. She is survived by her sister, Marion Palmer; niece, Mary Jane (Don) Davis; great-niece, Leslie Davis; and great-nephew, Christopher Davis. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 12, 1999 at 11 a.m. at MUEHLIG FUNERAL CHAPEL with Rev. Gregory Smith officiating. Interment will be in Washtenong Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. Those wishing may make memorial contributions to Hospice of Washtenaw.

Fitzgerald, Dorothy (Dotty) Kelley, Ypsilanti, MI

Age 58, passed away on Monday, May 10, 1999 at her residence. She was born August 18, 1940 in Barbourville, KY, the daughter of Herman V. and Susan (Kelly) Kelley. On February 28, 1985 she married Larry Fitzgerald in Ann Arbor, MI, and he survives. Mrs. Fitzgerald was employed by Sears, Briarwood Mall for 26 years. Dorothy and Larry enjoyed volunteering for the Meals on Wheels program during the Holidays. She will always be remembered for her love of nature, babies and zest for life. Survivors besides her husband include two children, Patricia (Jerry) Jerrell Reeder of Tipton, MI and Steven (Maria) Jerrell of Omaha, NE; two step children, Shawn (Heather) Fitzgerald of Grand Rapids, MI and Kent Fitzgerald of Ann Arbor; six grandchildren, Josh, Justin and Jason Jerrell, Jerry, Jennifer and Jason Reeder; seven brothers and sisters, Millard (Bonnie) Kelley of Griffan, GA, Sam (Millie) Kelley of Homestead, FL, Harvey (Loraine) Hensley of Nacogdoches, TX, William (Jerry) Hensley of Fairfield, OH, Martha Hensley Daniels of Fairfield, OH, Fannie (Walt) Disney of Elizabethtown, KY, and Margaret (Ken) Cooper of Chelsea, MI; a special niece, Wanda Keene Stuart; special people in her life, Paul Jerrell and Margaret Cooper; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Ben, Paul, George, Henry, Butler and Robert Kelley and three sisters, Ruth Kelley Yeager, Corine Kelley Baker and Elizabeth Hensley Kempler. A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Thursday, May 13, 1999 at 4:00 p.m. at Faithway Baptist Church, 2020 Packard Road, Ypsilanti, with Pastor Toby R. Weaver of Berean Baptist Church, Adrian, MI officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Fitzgerald's memory may be made to Hospice of Washtenaw.Envelopes will be available at the time of service or by contacting Janowiak Funeral Home, Geer-Logan Chapel.

Roberts, Theodore E., Tecumseh, MI

Age 76, died May 10, 1999 at home. He was born on August 28, 1922 in Elk Rapids, MI, the son of Jesse and Hazel (Winters) Roberts. On July 27, 1947, he married Lucille Stone in Ypsilanti. He graduated from Elk Rapids High School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired from Ford Motor Co., Rawsonville Plant, after 38 years of service. He was a past Scoutmaster of Boy Scouts Troop 426, Manchester, and was very active in his church and community. He enjoyed woodworking, woodcarving and always was inventing something. Ted always enjoyed fixing things and doing for others. He lived in Manchester for 35 years, moving to Tecumseh in 1980. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Tecumseh and was a Charter Member and past Grand Knight of the K of C, Fr. Edwin Fisher Council 4354. He was a member and past president of the Tecumseh Country Club. Ted is survived by his wife Lucille; six children, Theresa Baran of Manchester, Pat Stanley (Jim Skelton) of Tecumseh, Dan (Janet) Roberts of Chelsea, David (Dianna) Roberts of Manchester, John (Mary Jo) Roberts of Tecumseh and Joe (Julie) Roberts of Tecumseh; 18 grandchildren, Julie, Valerie, Sharon, Kathleen, Nick, Will, Jesse, Ted II, Chris, Andrew, Sonja, Daniel, Jeffery, Matthew, Jacob, Colleen, Michelle and Nathan; one great granddaughter, Alex; one sister, Josephine (Ralph) Smith of Lansing; three brothers, Dan Roberts of Atlanta, MI, Dale (Marge) Roberts of Milford and Jim (Nancy) Roberts of Tecumseh; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Eileen (Harold) Thayer and Marge (Chuck) Renz. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Tecumseh with Rev. Fr. Daniel Wheeler officiating. Burial in Brookside cemetery, Tecumseh. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Tecumseh American Legion. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Purse Funeral Home, Adrian. A Rosary Service will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Lenawee.

Slay, Edna Jeanetta, Ann Arbor, MI

Edna Jeanetta Slay was born on September 18, 1919 in Laurelbottom, WV. She was the first born of five children to Lee and Elnora (Tyler) Johnson. She quietly and peacefully departed this life on Sunday, May 9, 1999 in her home after a long illness. Edna moved to Ann Arbor, MI in 1960 with her husband and children. In the early years of her young life, she joined Hilltop Baptist Church in Hilltop, WV. Both she and her eldest daughter (Claressa) were baptized on the same day at Hilltop Baptist Church. Edna was a member of the Second Baptist Church of Ann Arbor. During her active period, she served in the Pastor's Aid Club. She was a homemaker and mother. She was married to Booker Taylor Slay on January 19, 1938. To this union, 11 children were born: Charles, B. (Luanna), Clarence L., Caroline M. (David) Scott, Carl E., Clyde O., Cheryl L. Harris, and Christopher L., all of Ann Arbor; Claressa E. (Cleveland) Meyers, and Cora M. (Henry) Olin, both of New York. She was preceded in death by her husband, Booker T.; two children, Clifford W. and Cynthia A.; and one granddaughter, Donna M. Meyers of New York. Edna leaves to cherish her memory her children; one sister, Helen Pryor of Hilltop, WV; a daughter-in-law, Cassandria of Ann Arbor; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives, and many, many friends. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 15, 1999 at 11 a.m. in the Second Baptist Church of Ann Arbor. Rev. Emmett Green will officiate. Burial will be in Washtenong Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7-9 p.m. at MUEHLIG CHAPEL. The family hour will be from 10-11 a.m. Saturday morning at the church. Memorial contributions are suggested to Second Baptist Church or Hospice of Washtenaw.

Crandell, Mother Evella, Ypsilanti, MI

Age 59, passed away on May 7, 1999. A memorial service will be held at St. James Church of God in Christ, 585 First Ave., Ypsilanti on Thursday, May 13 from 5-8 p.m.

Flynn, Ruth E., Chelsea, MI

(Formerly of Ann Arbor, MI)
Age 79, died Thursday, May 6, 1999 at the Chelsea Community Hospital. She was born July 18, 1919 in Stevens Point, WI, the daughter of Edward and Alice (Hodges) Brock. Mrs. Flynn lived in Chelsea since 1997, moving from Ann Arbor where she resided for 13 years. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church of Ann Arbor and also attended St. Marys Catholic Church of Chelsea. Ruth loved music and dancing. She also enjoyed playing bridge and reading books. Mrs. Flynn was a secretary for the Whiting Paper Co. for several years. On August 4, 1943, she married Joseph E. Flynn in Boston, MA, and he preceded her in death on February 6, 1999. Surviving are their three children, Patrick (Lorraine Vega) Flynn of San Francisco, CA, Lynette (Martin) Woytovich of Garden City, MI, and Kathleen (Graham) Parsons of Ann Arbor; three grandchildren, Joseph, Melissa, and Kathryn Marie Woytovich; one great-granddaughter; and her brother, Dr. Clayton (Jan) Brock of Monte Sereno, CA. She was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother. A memorial service will be held Sunday May 16, 1999 at 3 p.m. at the Chelsea Retirement Community Chapel with the Rev. Fr. Charles Irvin of St. Marys Catholic Church, Manchester officiating. A reception will follow the ceremony in the Town Hall of the Chelsea Retirement Community. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the St. Marys Building Fund or the Chelsea Retirement Community. Arrangements by STAFFAN-MITCHELL FUNERAL HOME, Chelsea.

Cooper, Perry D.,
Age 74, passed away May 8, 1999 in FL. He was born in Milford Township, Michigan on July 6, 1924. He was a resident of Ann Arbor until 1974 when he moved to Florida. He received his BA & BS degrees from Michigan State University and his MA in Education from the University of Michigan. Perry worked as a Lab Technician for the University of Florida, C.R.E.C. in Lake Alfred for 12 years and a teacher in Michigan for 20 years. He was an Ordained Deacon for the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Winter Haven, where hes been a member for 25 years. He was a charter member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Ann Arbor, MI where he was an ordained Elder and Deacon. He was a Navy Veteran who served during W.W.II, the Battle of Leyte Gulf, and spent time serving in the Pacific. He was in the Navy for 21/2 years with the rank of Sonarman, third class. He was a member of the Naval Mine Warfare Association and Friends of the Winter Haven Library. His hobbies were reading, woodworking and photography. Perry was a loving husband, father, brother and friend. He was a cherished man who will be greatly missed. He was the beloved husband of Peggy Cooper of Winter Haven, FL, loving father of Todd K. (Heidi) Cooper of Mackinaw City, Michigan, and Trudy L. (Clyde) Oliver of North Augusta, S.C. He is also survived by his granddaughters Kasey Oliver and Haeleigh Cooper, sister: H. Lucille Cooper of Ann Arbor, MI, sister-in-law Louise Berdan of Titusville, FL. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday at 10:30 A.M. at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1914 Greenview Drive, Ann Arbor, Michigan 734-761-9320. Interment will be at South Lyon cemetery. Arrangements by Phillips Funeral Home.

Morenz, Hanni Emilie, Cedar, MI

Died May 9, 1999. Hanni Emilie Morenz, 85, died Sunday at Leelanau Memorial Health Center in Northport. Born September 13, 1913 in Neumittelwalde, Schlesien, Germany, she was the daughter of Eugen and Agnes (Weinert) Ulbrich. On December 1961, in Ann Arbor, she married Rudy Bruno Morenz. Hanni volunteered hundreds of hours at Ann Arbor Veterans Administration Hospital. In 1979, Hanni and Rudy moved from Ann Arbor to Their Paradise in Cedar. She was preceded in death by her husband, on May 6, 1996, her parents, and two brothers. Graveside services will be announced at a later date. Burial will be in Hillcrest cemetery in Omena. Brauns, Lois M., Ypsilanti, MI

Age 72, passed away Tuesday, May 11, 1999 at Bortz Health Care of Ypsilanti following a prolonged illness. She was born September 12, 1926 in Napoleon, OH, the daughter of Walter and Gertrude (Haas) Applegate. In July of 1949, she married Herbert Brauns in Ohio and he survives. Also surviving are: five children, Timothy (Lora) of Pennsylvania, Martha (Burl) Shepherd of Ypsilanti, Susan (Michael) Kelley of Manchester, Fred of Ypsilanti and Paul of Texas; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers, Walter and David Applegate; one sister, Mildred Eply; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Visitation, 1-9 p.m. Thursday, May 13, 1999, STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel. Private burial will take place in Highland cemetery.

Bartlett, Robert J. (Bob), Ann Arbor, MI

Age 39, died May 5, 1999. Mr. Bartlett was a computer engineer by profession. He is survived by his mother Dorothy and one brother. His father, John W., preceded him in death. A funeral service was held on Monday at Fred Wood Funeral Home, Livonia, MI. Burial took place at Parkview cemetery in Livonia. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the Cistic Fibrosis Association.

Bull, Joan R., Saline, MI

Age 54, died Tuesday, May 11, 1999 in Saline. Joan was born July 20, 1944 in Petoskey, the daughter of Fred and Lydia (Genter) Ginder. On January 9, 1965, she married Gene Bull in Saginaw and he survives. Joan was a resident of Saline for the past 11 years and a member of the Saline First United Methodist Church. A 1968 graduate of the University of Michigan School of Nursing, Mrs. Bull earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and was employed by Visiting Care U.N.A. as a well baby clinician for several years. She was a loving wife and mother. In addition to her husband, she is survived by: three children, Marci (Jason) Gardiner and Jason Bull, all of Saline; and Kevin Bull of Kansas City, KS; her mother, Lydia Ginder of Saginaw; three grandchildren, Anthony, Vincent, and Nicholas Haynes; and two sisters, Doris Ginder of Big Rapids and Nancy (Will) Beckrow of Saginaw. She was preceded in death by her father, Fred Ginder on December 2, 1985. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 14 at noon at the Resurrection Lutheran Church in Saginaw with Rev. Mark Molldrem officiating. Burial will take place in Oakwood cemetery, Saginaw. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Spring Hill Camp, P.O. Box 100, Evart, MI 49631. Envelopes will be available at the Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home in Saline where friends may begin calling on Wednesday between 6-9 p.m., on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Family hour will be at 11 a.m. with funeral at 12 p.m., Thursday, May 13 at Metropolitan Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. S.L. Roberson officiating. Burial in United Memorial Gardens.
