Partridge, Barbara Lea, Ypsilanti, MI

Age 62, died Sunday, May 16, 1999 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital following a short illness. She was born November 19, 1936 in Flint, Michigan to Donovan and Lilian (Wendt) Partridge. She retired from the University of Michigan Financial Operation Department. She is survived by a sister, Cheryl (David) Bernhardt; brother, Gregory Partridge; nephew, Jeff Bernhardt; niece, Johanna (Steve) Woodward, family and many loving friends. Per her wishes, she will be cremated and no funeral services will be held. A celebration of her life will be scheduled at a later time.

Scharf, Lois Ella, Ypsilanti, MI

Age 89, died Monday, May 17, 1999 at her residence. She was born January 23, 1910 in Saline, Michigan, the daughter of George and Mary A. (Coon) Crittenden. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ypsilanti, joining at the age of 16 when she moved to Ypsilanti. Mrs. Scharf was employed with Ford Motor Co. retiring in 1974, and was an active member of UAW Local #849 in Ypsilanti. She will always be remembered for the great love she had for gardening and reading. Survivors include two sons, Robert G. (Margaret) Scharf of Brooklyn, MI and Thomas R. (Kathy) Scharf of Oxnard, CA; a daughter-in-law, Pamela A. Scharf of Lake Buick Somerset, MI; two grandsons, Vincent G. (MaryAnn) Scharf of Tecumseh and Timothy A. Scharf of Ann Arbor; three step-grandchildren, Elaine M. Bradley of Kalamazoo, Ryan P. Bradley and Samuel E. Bradley, both of Jackson; two great grandchildren, Chloe E. and Noah V. Scharf of Tecumseh; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Ruth (Bill) Koch and Thelma (Walt) McConnell and one brother, Alan Crittenden. Funeral service will be held Friday, May 21, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Ypsilanti with Pastor Eldon Beery officiating. Burial will follow in Washtenong Memorial Park, Ann Arbor, MI. Contributions in Mrs. Scharf's memory may be made to the Diabetes Association. Envelopes are available at the JANOWIAK FUNERAL HOME, GEER-LOGAN CHAPEL, where the family will receive friends on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. and at the Church on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of service.

Metty, Douglas C., Ypsilanti, MI

Age 54, died Monday, May 17, 1999. He was born October 5, 1944, in Battle Creek, MI, the son of J. Keith and Lydia E. (Tonelli) Metty. On December 27, 1963, he married Julia Ellyn Wright in Ann Arbor, MI, and she survives. Mr. Metty retired as a maintenance worker with the Water & Treatment Plant for the City of Ann Arbor. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, and then entered the Army Reserves. He was active with the Reserves for many years, serving as an instructor and retired in 1997 with the rank of Sergeant First Class. Mr. Metty received his 32nd degree with the Shriners and was a member of the Phoenix Lodge #13 F&AM of Ypsilanti. He was presently employed with Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor, working in security. Survivors besides his wife include 1 daughter, Julie (fiancee Brian Powell) Metty; his Dad and Mom, J. Keith and Virginia Metty; seven brothers and sisters, Keith J. (June) Metty, Sharron (Ben) Richards, Jackie Meggison, Dan Meggison, all of Ypsilanti, Ginger Meggison of Detroit, Bonnie Dunkley of Ann Arbor and Ronnie (Shirley) Meggison of Ypsilanti; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lydia E. Metty in 1953 and one sister, Phyllis Metty Manwaring in 1966. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, May 22 at 10 a.m. at Transfiguration Catholic Church with Fr. Edmond Ertzbischoff of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. John Catholic cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 1-9 p.m. at the Janowiak Funeral Home, Geer-Logan Chapel with a Scripture Service at 7 p.m. and a Masonic Memorial Service at 8 p.m.

Barth, Lucile A., Ann Arbor, MI

Age 90, passed away Tuesday, April 6, 1999 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital after a short illness. She was born in Ann Arbor on October 6, 1908, the daughter of James and Amanda Elliott. On December 17, 1927, she married Carl F. Barth of Limoni, IA. He preceded her in death on October 11, 1978. She is survived by one daughter, Patricia L. (Daniel) Hughes of Silverdale, WA; and five grandchildren, Rebecca (James) Dunlavy of Hamburg, MI, Michael V. (Joyce) Burzan of Phoenicia, NY, Thomas P. Burzan of Whitmore Lake, MI, Theresa K. (Charles) Pollmar of Brainbridge Island, WA, and Juliana M. (Michael) Mast of Dexter, MI. Lucile also had six great grandchildren. A public graveside memorial service will be held at Bethlehem cemetery, Ann Arbor on Friday, May 21, 1999 at 1 p.m. Arrangements by Muehlig Chapel.

Clark, James D.,

Age 79, loving husband of Doris. Dear father of James D., Carol Lynn Clark, and Ellen Kay Darmofal. Brother of Agnes Boos, and Helen Browne. Grandfather of six. Visitation 3-9 p.m. Thursday with funeral service 1 p.m. Friday at Casterline Funeral Home, Inc. 122 West Dunlap, Northville.

Brown, Dave Jr., Highland Park, MI

Age 77, died Monday, May 17, 1999 at University Hospitals. He was born October 27, 1921 in Jeffersonville, GA the son of Dave and Viola (Jones) Brown Sr. and was married to Victoria Murray in 1956 in Toledo, OH. Serving with the U.S. Navy during WWII, from 1941-1947, he returned home and worked as a butcher/meat cutter, and had owned and operated the King Cole Supermarket for many years in Detroit. He was a trustee at the New Hope Baptist Church of Ann Arbor and was a guest lecturer with the Karmanos Cancer Institute. Mr. Brown is survived by his eight children, David (Pat) Wimberly of Lathrup Village, Elizabeth Brown and Eugina Wimberly, both of Inkster, Glen (Emily) Brown of Rowlett, TX, David Jerome Brown of Ann Arbor, Alma Latrell Brown of Ypsilanti, Mark Keenan of Fairfield, CA, Christopher (Ellen) Brown of Ypsilanti; thirteen grandchildren; one great grandchild; four brothers, George Brown, Clyde (Maria) Brown, Halbert Brown and Talbert (Irene) Brown; two sisters, Christa Eva Savoy and Anna Collins; his two sister-in-laws, Virginia and Margie Murray and a host of loving relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife, Victoria Murray Brown; his sisters, Virginia Brown and Elouise Perry; his brother, Nile Brown and his parents, Dave Sr. and Viola Brown. Friends may call at the NIE FUNERAL HOME, 2400 Carpenter Rd., from 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 21, 1999. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 22 at the New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Albert Lightfoot Jr. officiating, family hour will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Washtenong Memorial Park.

Glenn, Loretta B. (Ignatowski), Blowing Rock, NC

Age 77, died at home Monday, May 17, 1999. She was a graduate of Michigan State Normal College. Ms. Glenn participated in the continual growth of Domino's Pizza. A lifelong businesswoman, she was also active in historic preservation projects in New Harmony and Fort Wayne, IN, the printing business in Michigan and real estate development in North Carolina. Survivors include daughters, Sue Glenn and Cindy Glenn, both of Blowing Rock and a sister, Sue Skopinski, of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Watauga County, 136 Furman Road, Boone, NC 28607 or to the American Syringomyelia Alliance Project, Inc., P.O. Box 1586, Longview, TX 75607-1586 or to the Blowing Rock Community Club Library, P.O. Box 166, Blowing Rock, NC 28605. HAMPTON FUNERAL SERVICE in Boone, NC, is in charge of arrangements.

Bashaw-Stifler, Jack Dean, Ypsilanti, MI

Born in Monroe, MI, September 26, 1947, passed away in Ann Arbor, MI, May 16, 1999 from an injury received from a falling tree branch which struck him while he worked in his garden. This accident ended a life devoted to the beautification of this world and the family he so loved. Jack was a gifted man: a brilliant artist, a sculptor, a gardener, a gourmet chef, a loving husband, a father, a grandfather, a brother, and a son. He shared his life with Robert Dargel, his husband of nineteen years; his children, Maggie, Matt, Amity; and his extended family, Cindie, Keith, Pam, Steve, Emily, Austin, Olivia, Deborah, Mully, Carol, Nancy, Joan, Bill, Donald; and his mother, Marguerite. Of the many ideas that made up such a rich life, there were two that possessed Jack's heart quite completely: beauty and family. Jack's life was filled by creating ever-increasing objects of beauty and an ever-larger and more loving family. He will be greatly missed. Visitation will be held at MUEHLIG FUNERAL CHAPEL on Thursday, 4-9 p.m. with a memory sharing from 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday May 21 at 1:30 p.m. from St. Thomas Catholic Church.

Kooperman, David, Ann Arbor, MI

David Kooperman, age 84, a lifelong resident of Ann Arbor passed away on 5/18/99 at the V.A. Hospital in Ann Arbor. He was in the service station business for many years. David was a veteran of W.W.II serving in Italy and Korea. Survivors include his two brothers Joseph (Lucille) and Jacob (Clara). He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother. Cremation has taken place.

Hall, Kathleen Leone, Tallahassee, FL

(Formerly of Ann Arbor, MI)
Age 84, died Friday, May 14, 1999 from natural causes in Tallahassee, FL. She was born in Alma, MI and had been residing in Tallahassee, FL since 1997. Kathleen was a homemaker and a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church. She is survived by her son, Thomas E. Hall of Seminole, FL; three daughters, Patricia G. Kirschke of Tallahassee, Barbara S. Munson of Wilmont, NC, and Margaret F. Riley of Ypsilanti, MI; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great- great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward F. Hall. There will be a private family service. Arrangements by Abbey Funeral Home, Tallahassee, FL; (850) 562-1518. Memorial contributions may be made in Kathleen's name to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308.

Hess, George Earl,

Born in Wayne, MI, died on his 71st birthday, April 22, 1999, in San Francisco, CA. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Barr Hess; his children, Gretchen Hess Bren of Omaha, NE and Sarah Hess Zalman of Havelock, NC; stepchildren, Frederick C. Barr of Mill Valley, CA and Thomas J. Barr of Chicago,IL; sister, Phyllis Marshall; brother, Jerry Hess; and four grandchildren. Mr. Hess spent most of his life in Ann Arbor, was in the Marine Corps from 1951 to 1953, and was employed for 29 years at the UM Medical School Department of Postgraduate Medicine and Health Professions Education. Cremation has taken place. A private memorial service will be held at Burt Lake, MI on July 31. Donations may be made to the charity of your choice. George was a man with profound intellectual curiosity and an incisive sense of humor. He was a sailor, a skier, a cook, a creative handyman, and a fearless experimenter. Despite the illness of his later years, he maintained his patience and his personal dignity. He was a remarkable man, and we all shall miss him.

Helvey, George A., Ypsilanti, MI

Age 102, passed away Wednesday, May 19, 1999 at Whitehall Convalescent Center. He was born October 18, 1896 in Roann, IN, the son of Benjamin and Martha Ann (Kuffel) Helvey. He graduated from Wabash College, Crawfordsville, IN, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma. He obtained his Master's Degree from the University of Michigan in June 1944. Mr. Helvey was a math teacher. He began his teaching career at a grade school in Indiana. He taught for 10 years at the Ludington High School. He then came to Ypsilanti in 1936 and taught at the Ypsilanti High School for 30 years, retiring in 1966. Mr. Helvey joined the Church of God at Yellow Creek Lake Church of God Conference in 1986, and was a member of the Congress Street Church of God. Survivors include: his wife, Erline; three sons, George Jr. (Judy) of Midland, Donald (Janice) of Ann Arbor and Ronald (Kellie) of Ypsilanti; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several other relatives. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth, five brothers and two sisters. The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 22, 1999 at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel with Rev. Eugene Frame officiating. Burial will follow in Highland cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Congress Street Church of God. Envelopes are available at the funeral home where friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Wynn, Billy J., Ypsilanti Township, MI

Age 70, passed away Wednesday, May 19, 1999 at Belle Woods Continuing Care Center following an extended illness. He was born September 11, 1928 in Kennet, MO, the son of Ruby and Alice (Allen) Wynn. Mr. Wynn was a former member of the Ypsilanti Eagles and the Ypsilanti Moose. Survivors include: his wife, Catherine; two sons, Thomas and Mark Wynn; one daughter, Terry Plumb; stepchildren, Michael (Janet) Weaks, Richard (Gladys) Weaks, Mary Ellen Tweedy and Judith (Ronald) Brugh; and two sisters Wanda Hedleski and Sandra Knight. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, J.T. Wynn. Cremation has taken place.
