McLean, Duncan A., Brighton, MI

Age 84, passed away Thursday May 20, 1999. Funeral Services 1 p.m. Monday May 24, 1999 at the Keehn Funeral Home, 706 West Main Street, Brighton (810) 229-9871. The family will receive friends, Sunday May 23, 1999 from 3-6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Hollis, Randolph Randy, Tecumseh, MI

Age 51 died May 21, 1999 at home. He was born December 15, 1947 in South Lyon, MI to Lonnie and Vada Marie (Harmon) Hollis. On June 24, 1978 he married Theolinda Linda Heldt in Milan and she survives. Randy was an independent truck driver for seven years and worked for Michigan Trenching for 17 years until taking medical retirement in 1992. He was a member of Tecumseh Church of Christ, and the Milan Moose Lodge. Survivors in addition to his wife Linda of Tecumseh include his mother, Vada M. Moore of Jackson, a son Luke Hollis of Milan, three daughters, Tammy (Al) Bullock of Dawson Springs, KY, Stacie (Arthur) Rock of Ann Arbor, Carey (Alonzo) Merritt of Milan, three sisters, Ann (Tom) Ryan of Whitmore Lake, Judy (Doug) Hammond of Dunn Ellon, FL, and Shirley Lewis of Belleville, and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father. Visitation will be held Tuesday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and Wednesday 2-4 and 6-7 p.m. at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Service, Milan where the funeral service will take place at 7p.m. Wednesday with Tom Hawkins of Tecumseh Church of Christ officiating.

Pearsall, James E., Indianapolis, IN

Age 46, died May 21, 1999. Visitation Monday 3-9 p.m. Funeral Service Tuesday, 11:30 a.m. at Keehn Funeral Home, Brighton.

Gilbert, Robert, Dexter, MI

A quiet man but quite a man, was loved by many as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend passed away on May 22, 1999. The memories of him will be treasured by his wife, Margaret; his children, William of Dexter and Kathryn Warner of Ann Arbor; his granddaughter, Robyn; his sister, Audrey (Robert) Eisele and several nieces and nephews. His parents, Henry and Pearl, and sister, Virginia Ferris, preceded in death. Robert was born in Gregory, MI on September 1, 1919. He attended North Lake Methodist Church. In 1937 he graduated from Chelsea High School where he served as president of the Southeastern District FFA. In 1939 Robert graduated from the Michigan State University Agriculture Short course and in 1943 he married Margaret Scherdt. Robert helped organize the Washtenaw County Junior Farm Bureau and the first Soil Conservation District in Washtenaw County. He was a farmer and livestock trucker for many years as well as a milk tester for DHIA. He went on to work for Washtenaw Farmers Oil Company for 23 years, earning several top State awards for salesmanship. Robert was a member of St. Andrews United Church of Christ where he was involved as a Sunday school teacher, a member of the consistory board, and chairman of the building committee for the present church. He was also an associate member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Sarasota, FL for 10 years. Robert was an avid dahlia grower for over 30 years winning many State, Midwest, and International awards. He was a member of the MI Dahlia Society, the Southeastern Dahlia Society, and the Toledo Dahlia Society. Memorial contributions may be directed to cemetery fund at St. Andrews UCC, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Sarasota, FL, or IHNC/Individualized Hospice Patient Care Fund. Arrangements are being made for Sunday Visitation and a Monday funeral by Hosmer-Muehlig Funeral Home in Dexter.

Johnson, Robert G., Ann Arbor, MI

Age 86, passed away Sunday morning, May 23, 1999 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. Mr. Johnson was born on March 27, 1913 in Dayton, OH, the son of Alvin and Ruth (Lee) Johnson. On June 5, 1937, he was married to Lottie Rachfal, who preceded him in death on August 29, 1988. He had retired in 1963 from Banner Linen Service, after 27 years of service, and then worked for Varsity Linen Co., retiring in 1973. He was a member and a faithful usher at St. Francis Catholic Church of Ann Arbor, where he lived for the past 27 years. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Maryanne and Harley Klein of Ann Arbor; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, 1999 at the NIE FUNERAL HOME, 2400 Carpenter Rd., with the Rev. Fr. James McDougal officiating. Burial will be at St. Thomas cemetery. The family will receive friends at the NIE FUNERAL HOME Tuesday, 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Crippen, Shirley M., Ann Arbor, MI

Age 72, passed away at home, Sunday morning, May 23, 1999. She was born on November 24, 1926 in Ann Arbor, the daughter of George and Ruth (Carson) Schaible. On July 18, 1964, Shirley was married to Victor Crippen. She retired from Kmart in 1982 after 33 years of service. Most of that time she worked in the Kresge Westgate Store, moving to Kmart, when the Westgate store was closed. She was a member of the Ladies of the Moose, the Pittsfield Senior Citizens and the Gravel Grinders Travel Club. Surviving is her husband, Victor; her daughters, Donna (William) Johnson of Ann Arbor, Vickie (Don) Kaiser of Dexter and Debbie (Joe) Vasher of Whitmore Lake. Also survived by two brothers, Gordon Schaible of Grayling and Gary Schaible of Pennsylvania; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; and one to be born soon. Preceding her in death were her parents and two brothers, LeRoy Schaible and George Schaible Jr. Memorial tributes may be made in Shirley's honor to the Arbor Hospice or the American Cancer Society, envelopes are available at the NIE FUNERAL HOME, 2400 Carpenter Rd., where the family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., tonight and 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, 1999 at the NIE FUNERAL HOME.

Garrett, Jean Francis, Ann Arbor, MI

Age 57, passed away Friday, May 21, 1999. Born April 25, 1942 in Ontario, OH, the daughter of the late Phillimina and William L. Garrett. Jean was employed by Mercywood Hospital/St. Joseph's Hospital-6000 Unit for the last 25 years. Jean gave love and was loved by all who knew her. Her compassion and quick wit will be missed by all. Jean was an avid movie goer and the local theater may have to close due to loss of patronage! Surviving siblings: William (Mallie) Garrett, Sallie Collier and Gale (Jim) Betts; 11 nieces and nephews; nine great nieces and nephews; and one great nephew. She will be greatly missed by the 6000 unit and by the following people: Bobbi/Reed Garrett, Linda/Joe Sayer, Ruth Riley, Liz Jewell, Dan Morgan, Gail Pratt, Lucy Dorr, Carol/Wayne Root, Salvy Bisaccia, Sue Ulbrich, Pam Otto, Diane Jahnke, Cathy Pollack, Diane Valenti, Sheila Ritondale, Joan Kettlehut, Donna Lawrence, Sally Young, Jean Ellis, Harold Satterla, Cheri Rush, Lorri Clay, Paula Mieras, Denise Doran, Heather Sorise, Molly Todd, Bev Christian, Mollie Cameron, Katie Carr, Julie Haupt, Demetrice Ferguson, Karen Michaels, Brian Eglinton, Gina Frankhart, Freda Gray, Diane Johnson, Carolyn Simons, Dee Nagy, Margaret Rose-Byrne, Mark Leonard, Joyce Lindstrom, Marcia Newman, Alberta Pearson, Sue Marttila, Dora Harms, Shirley Short, Heide Pinkerton, John Nama, Linda DiBona, Sally Lunn, David Workman, Fran Benjamin, Violet Haiduc, Mary in EEG, Norma Weirich, Bob Evans, Shan Hale, Julia Roy, Martinia Young, Mike Kraft, Karen Therrien, James Nash, Tamekia Walls, Julia Pipkin, Traci Byrd, Williard Hicks, Larry Rankin, Maureen Smith, Carryn Demey, Pam Simpson, T.J. Neiler, Kathryn M., Grass Lake, MI

Age 83, died May 23, 1999. Survived by her daughter, Marjorie and John Lazarz. Funeral Mass Wednesday, May 26, 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Chelsea, with visitation at COLE FUNERAL CHAPEL Tuesday 7-9 p.m. and Vigil Service at 7:30 p.m.

Gardella, Mary Elizabeth, Howell, MI

Age 72, died Sunday, May 23, 1999. Wife of John. Funeral Mass Wednesday 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Howell. Visitation Monday 6-8 p.m. and Tuesday 1-4 and 6-8 p.m. with Rosary 6:30 at MacDonald's Funeral Home, Howell (517-546-2800).

Asher, Ottis W., Ypsilanti Township, MI

Age 80. passed away Saturday, May 22, 1999 at his residence in the presence of his close family members. He was born October 1, 1918 in Mannington, WV, the son of William S. and Rose J. (Miller) Asher. Mr. Asher was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army Medical Corp. where he served during WWII. He was a member of the UAW with Ford Motor Company for 32 years retiring in 1980. Mr. Asher will always be remembered for his love of his family and gardening. Survivors include two sons and a daughter, Russell O. (Kathleen) Asher of Belleville, Annette (and fiance Ben Storemski) Asher Finley of Pinckney, David D. (Bev) Asher of Milan; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen (Bob) Hamilton and Loraine Timko, both of Ohio; and a dear friend, Mary Mitchell; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Perry L. Asher; five brothers; and two sisters. Funeral service will be Wednesday, May 26, 1999 at 10 a.m. at the JANOWIAK FUNERAL HOME, Geer-Logan Chapel with Mr. Jerry D. Lawson, Minister of the Ypsilanti Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow in Highland cemetery. Contributions in Mr. Asher's memory may be made to Arbor Hospice or American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home where the family will receive friends on Monday from6-9 p.m. and Tuesday 1-4 and 6-9 p.m.

Smith, Andrew D., Ypsilanti, MI

Age 89, passed away suddenly Friday, May 21, 1999. He was born September 27, 1909 in Ypsilanti, the son of Austin F. and Bertha (Ferris) Smith. On March 4, 1932, he married Marguerite Gaylord, and she preceded him in death November 19, 1986. He was the son and eventual owner of A.F. Smith and Son Inc., Electrical Contractors in Ypsilanti, retiring in 1974. He was a charter member of the Michigan Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association. Mr. Smith, Mr. Ypsilanti, was very active in the Ypsilanti community, giving freely of his time, talents and money . He was a charter member of the Ypsilanti Jaycees, and was still active with the Kiwanis, Phoenix Lodge #13 F. & A.M., Boys & Girls Club and the Salvation Army. He was a life member of the First United Methodist Church. Survivors include; two sons, Richard (Connie) Smith of Beaverton, MI and Ronald (Janet) Smith of Pinckney, MI; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Elsie Allen, Ida Davidson, and Helen Grant, and one brother, Emory. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 25, 1999 at the First United Methodist Church of Ypsilanti, corner of Washtenaw and Washington St., with Rev. Terry Allen officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn cemetery, Dexter, MI. There will be a Masonic Memorial Service 7 p.m. Monday at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel. The family requests memorials to the First United Methodist Church, the Ypsilanti Boys & Girls Club or the Ypsilanti Salvation Army. Envelopes are available at the funeral home where friends may call 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. Monday and at the church from 10 a.m. Tuesday until time of service.

Rumberger, John H., Branson, MO

(Formerly of Plymouth and Ypsilanti, MI)
Age 72, passed away suddenly Saturday, May 22, 1999 in Springfield MO. He was born June 8,1926 in Ypsilanti, the son of Alvin and Agnes (Vogler) Rumberger. He was a 1948 graduate of Ypsilanti High School. On August 12,1950, he married Shirley Losey and she survives. Mr. Rumberger was a painter/decorator, a true craftsman, for many years. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Ypsilanti. In addition to his wife, survivors include: 2 sons, Dale (Virginia) of Plymouth, MI and Fred (Heidi) of Pinckney, MI; 3 daughters, Sherril (Robert) Slebodnick of Canton, MI; Marilyn (Ray) Daughtery of Bath, MI and Carolyn (Jeff) Powers of Canton, MI; 8 grandchildren; 2 brothers, Henry (Ruth) of Ypsilanti and David (Sue) of Tecumseh, MI, 4 sisters,Dorothy (Lou) Genix of Jackson, MI, Shirley (Bob) Deiter of Tecumseh, MI, Frances (Keith) Schener of Chelsea, MI and Marian Monhollan of Ypsilanti. He was preceded in death by one son, John Henry and 2 brothers, Alvin and Robert. The funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 28, 1999 at Emmanuel Luthern Church with Pastor Janet Marvar officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside cemetery, Plymouth, MI. Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association. Envelopes are available at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel where friends may call 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, 10 a.m.- 9 p.m. Thursday and at the church from 12:30 p.m. Friday until time of service.
