Predovich, Greta Olson, Ann Arbor, MI

Age 68, died Wednesday, October 6, 1999 at her home in Ann Arbor. She was born on September 14, 1931 in Detroit, MI and she was married to Kenneth Predovich June 25, 1977. Greta attended schools for the deaf in Michigan and Ohio, and was active in organizations for the deaf. Greta's sense of humor and warmth enriched the lived of her family and those who knew her, and she will be dearly missed. Survivors include husband, Kenneth Prodovich; brother, Nels (Mary) Olson of Ann Arbor; nephew, Jon (Julia Vosper) Olson of Milwaukee; nieces, Lydie (Chris) Raschka of New York City; Siri (Jonathan Strom) Olson of Atlanta, and Kari (Charles Tein) Olson of New York City; grand-nephews, Ezra and Ingo; and grand-nieces, Ahna, Madeline and Solveig; and many cousins. Memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday at Lord of Light Lutheran Church in Ann Arbor.

Chasteen, Ernest Alvin, Bradenton, FL.

Died Wednesday, October 6, 1999 in the Blake Medical Center, Bradenton, FL. A former resident of Ann Arbor for 45 years, he retired in 1981 from the Department of Building and Safety for the City of Ann Arbor. Ernest was a former instructor of the Refrigeration Technology program at Washtenaw Community College, former owner of the Chasteen Appliance Service from 1947-1967, a former fire chief for East Ann Arbor, and he did volunteer work for the American Cancer Society Bradenton, FL. He is survived by his wife Beatrice Heusel Chasteen; daughter Phyllis Darge (David) Racine, Wisconsin; two sons N. Dennis (Lori Lavac) of Lee, New Hampshire, and Joseph E. Chasteen (Donna K.) of Seattle, Washington. He is also survived by a sister Clara Linder, San Benito, Texas; and seven grandchildren, David Jackle, Steven Jackle, Alison Chasteen, Mark Chasteen, Kim Swatz, Stephanie Chasteen and Susan Weishoff; also two special dog companions, Pierre and Suzette. He is preceded in death by a daughter Colleen in 1967; four brothers and one sister. Services will be held at the Washtenong Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel on Saturday October, 9 1999 at 10 a.m. Entombment Washtenong Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of ones choice. Arrangements by Muehlig Funeral Chapel.

Clark, George S., Highland Township, MI

Age 55, died Wednesday, October 6, 1999. Beloved husband of Georgia Ann. Dear son of Mary Ellen Clark of Milford. Dear son-in-law of Mary Jo Berglund. Dear brother-in-law of William J. (Pat) Berglund, Neil A. Berglund, Brenda M. Berglund. Also leaves many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends. Mr. Clark was a Professor of Accounting, of over 25 years, at Eastern Michigan University, a partner and Attorney with Bergesen and Clark L.L.P. in Troy, and worked with Renaissance C.P.A. in Ann Arbor. Funeral Mass 10 a.m. Saturday from St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1851 East Commerce Road, Milford with Father Ron Anderson officiating. Friends may visit Lynch & Sons (Richardson-Bird Chapel) , 404 E. Reichart, Walter A., Ann Arbor, MI

Age 95, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 28, 1999. Born November 15, 1903 in Pressburg, Austria (now Bratislava in Slovakia) he was the second son of Emma and Leo Reichart (a chemist) . Walter's boyhood and early schooling until 1915 were in Krems on the Danube, Austria. In 1915 he came with his mother and brother to Toledo, OH. In 1922 he became a student at the University of Michigan in German and English Literature and in 1930 he completed his PhD at the UofM. In 1929 he married Ruth Oakman of Detroit. He began teaching at the UofM in 1925 and was Full Professor there in 1940 and Professor Emeritus in 1973. He was a Visiting Professor at the University of Chicago and the University of California at Berkeley. Walter received many awards for scholarly pursuits, one of then being the University of Michigan Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award in 1966. He was known as the mentor of North American Scholarship on Gerhart Hauptmann, publishing on this famous German author throughout his life. Other interests, as evidenced in publications, were Washington Irving, Shakespeare, Thomas Mann, and 19th century German drama. He was known worldwide for his work on the Annual Bibliography of the Publications of the Modern Language Association of America. In 1937 and 1938 he was U.S. Duplicate Bridge Champion and enjoyed bridge his entire life. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth, and by his loving brother, Ernst and sister-in-law, Myrna; and is survived by his niece, Anne Herman of Calgary, Alberta; and Ruth's nephew, Charles Oakman of Detroit; and niece, Patricia Ashbrook of Camarillo, CA; and many grand nieces and nephews. His death saddens not only members of this family and close friends but also his former colleagues at the University of Michigan, and many in the profession both in this country and abroad. A Memorial Service will be held November 15, 1999 at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Washtenaw Ave, Ann Arbor. Pan, Viola Mitchell, Ann Arbor, MI

Age 95, passed away on Tuesday, October 5, 1999 at her Ann Arbor home. She was born April 4, 1904 in Thomasville, Georgia, the eighth of nine children of Anna Paulina and Henry Mitchell. A registered nurse, she was a graduate of the Francis Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University. She married Dr. Oscar Pan in 1936, and lived in Cleveland, Ohio until 1976 when she moved to Ann Arbor. Mrs. Pan was a member of the Epworth-Euclid United Methodist Church in Cleveland and active in the St. Alexis Hospital Guild and PTA there. Dr. and Mrs Pan's two children, Robert O. Pan of New York City and Pauline M. Pan of Ann Arbor, MI, survive. There will be a memorial service on Monday, October 11, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the First United Methodist Church of Ann Arbor. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the IHNC/Individualized Hospice Patient Care Fund.

McDonald, Kathryn Suzanne, Hamburg Twp, MI

Age 20, died suddenly October 6, 1999. Kathryn was born on November 26, 1978 in Ann Arbor, the daughter of Mark McDonald and Suzanne Jo Boltach. Kathryn was a student at Washtenaw Community College.She graduated from Pinckney High School in 1996. Katie was employed as a leasing representative for Wilson White Company in Ann Arbor. She is survived by her mother, Suzanne Jo (Phillip) Boltach and father, Mark(Judy) McDonald. Loving sister of Geoffrey Boltach of Hamburg, Aaron Goodlock of Hamburg, and Heather Boltach of Tecumseh. Best friend of Danielle Hatch of East Tawas. Visitation will be Saturday 2-3 p.m. prior to 3 p.m. service at the BELL-BOREK FUNERAL HOME, 7425M-36, Hamburg with Pastor Doug McMunn officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Mott's Children's Hospital. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Swanson, Clifford Kip, Portage, MI

Kip's life began August 17, 1928 in Ishpeming, MI, the son of Henning and Lila Swanson. He grew up in Ishpeming and graduated from high school there. After high school Kip moved with his family to Ann Arbor where he was drafted into the United States Army. Kip proudly served his country from 1950-1952 as a Forward Observer in the Artillery in Korea, attaining the rank of Sergeant. When he was discharged he returned to Ann Arbor and was introduced to Maxine Wolfe on a blind date. They began spending time together and were married April 10, 1954. After marrying, Kip's job with Argus Cameras took him to Columbia, SC for five years and then to Cincinnati, OH. He later came to Kalamazoo to work as Plant Mgr for Shakespeare Corp for several years. After that he become a self employed Manufacturers Representative for West Michigan Scale Co., Floating Bridge Tool and Machine Co. in Three Rivers, and Innovative Engineering Co. in Dewitt. Outside of work, Kip had many interests. He enjoyed travelling to Ann Arbor to watch the University of Michigan Football team play and also followed them to the Rose Bowl on several different occasions. He was an avid golfer and won many trophies playing golf with his best friend and co-worker, Ernie Piechocki. He also golfed in a Friday couples league with Maxine. Kip and Maxine loved to dance with the Etanda Dance Club, of which they were members, they played in two bridge marathons and they liked to travel as well. Kip was also known for his terrific sense of humor. Other members of his family include his children, Mike Swanson of Portage, Sue Lindahl and her husband Tim of Minneapolis, MN, Carolyn Burke and her husband Ed of Palm Harbor, FL and Robert Swanson of Altanta, GA. Kip also has a brother, Ken Swanson of Bremerton, WA; a sister, Kay Armbruster of Ann Arbor; and several nieces and nephews. Kip died on Wednesday, October 6, 1999 in Kalamazoo. Friends may spend time with his family Monday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at RUPERT, DURHAM, MARSHALL & GREN FUNERAL HOME Portage Chapel. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the chapel Tuesday at 12:00 Noon. Kip will be buried with military honors in Ft. Custer National cemetery. CONFER, Mr. Donald Edward

Don's life began August 15, 1922 in Gobles the son of Lee and Anna (Fritz) Confer. When Don was four his family moved to Alamo Twp to their Dairy farm where he grew up. Don graduated from Plainwell High School in 1940 and married Esther May Brown in 1947. They have a daughter Candace Claflin and her husband David who live in Kalamazoo. Don and Esther operated their family dairy farm until 1984 when they sold the livestock to retire. After their retirement he worked as a security guard for the former Pre Con Co. until 1992. He currently was working part-time for Mack Fire Extinguisher Co. Don was a member of Cooper Congregational Church, the Farm Bureau, and was a 4-H Club leader. He also served on the Alamo Twp. Volunteer Fire Dept. for many years. His family recalls that Don loved to fish and visit with people. He specially enjoyed children and used to hire them to help on the dairy farm. In addition to his wife of 49 years and his daughter, members of Don's family include sisters Opal Prusick of Kalamazoo, Marcia Cronkhite and her husband Lloyd of Kalamazoo, a brother Robert Confer and his wife Mary of Otsego, and many dear nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wesley and Fritz Confer. Don died at his home Wednesday April 9, 1997. Friends may visit with his family Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren Funeral Home Plainwell Chapel where a Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. Don will be buried at Mt. Everest cemetery North located on North Drake Rd. Friends may make donations in his memory to the Cooper Congregational Church or to the Alamo Twp. Volunteer Fire Department. HAYWARD, Ralph R.

Ralph's life began on April 4, 1902 in Lamar, MO. Ralph started school in Aurora, IL. His family moved to a farm in Scotts, MI; there he attended school and graduated from Scotts High School in 1920. Ralph graduated from Argubright Business College where he met Olive Nelson. They were married on the Family farm Thanksgiving Day, November 29, 1923 in a double ceremony along with his sister Ruth and Ted Chambers. Ralph was very active in the community and was instrumental in the formation of the Climax Rotary Club. He loved animals and raised and trained dogs. Ralph and Olive moved to Vicksburg in 1941; and started the Ralph Hayward Insurance Agency. Ralph enjoyed helping people any way he could. He joined the Vicksburg Rotary Club and was an active member, serving as its president and taking other offices. He was also a Mason, belonging to Brady Lodge #208 F&AM in Vicksburg. Ralph and Olive had three children: Ralph Jr. who preceded him in death in 1983, Patt Upson of Portage, and Robert and his wife Mary Ann Hayward of Vicksburg. Ralph also enjoyed his grandchildren, Darcy and Dirk Wolhout, Trenton and Cindy Hayward, Janis and Earl Smith, Susan Schiele, and Karen and Robert Bailey. He was also proud of his six great grandchildren. Ralph's family also includes two brothers, Donald of Scotts, Max and his wife Cora of Ohio, two sisters-in-law, Iva Grace Hayward of Kalamazoo and Dora Hayward of Climax; many nieces; and many nephews. Ralph died in Portage on Thursday April 10, 1997. Preceding him in death besides his son Ralph Jr. are two brothers, Lawrence and Willard; a sister Ruth; and a sister-in-law Marjorie. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, April 16th. at 11:00 AM at Lakeland Reformed Church. The family suggests memorials be directed to the Church Memorial Fund.

JOHNSON, Carl W.

Carl's life began on January 19, 1912 in LaGrange, Indiana, a son of Thomas and Charlotte (Steffen) Johnson. He was a fifty-year member of the Knights of Pythias Scotts Lodge #103 and served as Grand Chancellor of Michigan in 1959, and was a charter member of the Pythian Sisters Elmwood Temple #88 of Scotts. Carl retired in 1975 from the Brunswick Corporation and he had been a Government Grain Inspector for Kalamazoo County. He also operated his farm near Scotts for fifty years. He attended Scotts and Climax United Methodist Churches. Carl enjoyed traveling and visited most areas of the country, and he loved music and nature, especially bird watching. His family includes his wife of nearly 62 years, Birda Armeda (Penn) Johnson, whom he married on June 15, 1935 in LaGrange, IN; three daughters and husbands, Charlotte and Jerald Longman of Climax, Carol and Robert Nichols of Kalamazoo, and Margie and John Meadowcroft of Ortonville; seven grandchildren and spouses, Lise and Jim Patterson of Climax, Paula and John Cunningham of New Palestine, IN, Heidi and Dan Reschner of Athens, Hayden Roe of Kalamazoo, Stacey Sofian and twins William and Erica Meadowcroft, all of Ortonville; four sisters and one brother, Shirley Machan and husband Dale of Sturgis, Bertha May Borst of Michigan City, IN, Nelda Dinnus, Hazel Johnson, and Howard Johnson, all of Ft. Wayne, IN; sisters-in-law, Pauline Penn, Wanetta Penn of Sturgis and Marjorie Dock of Kalamazoo; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Carl died at home on Sunday, April 6, 1997 after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Carl Riley Johnson; two grandsons, David Carl and Jay Ross Longman; and a sister, Mary Sargent. Friends may visit with Carl's family 2-4 & 7-9 PM Tuesday at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren Funeral Home, Portage Chapel, Lovers Lane at Milham, where a Knights of Pythias Memorial Service will be held 8 PM Tuesday. A Celebration of Life service will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday with Rev. Charles Hulbert speaking. Carl will be buried in Mt. Ever-Rest cemetery. Memorial gifts in his memory may be made to Hospice of Greater Kalamazoo, the Climax United Methodist Church, or to the Pythian Sisters of Scotts. JOHNSON, Grace

Grace Barnes' life began in Windber, PA on December 2, 1919. She was raised in Pennsylvania and eventually moved to Toledo, OH for work. Grace worked for a family business and met her boss' nephew, DeVere while he was home on leave from the war. Their relationship grew and she and DeVere were married on September 18, 1948 in Toledo, OH. They had one daughter Pamela and her husband Jim Robertson and one son Jeffrey and his wife Cathy all of Vicksburg. Grace enjoyed gardening, flowers and picnicking. She loved to watch birds and to watch the squirrels play. Most of all she was a very caring and loving grandmother to her three grandchildren, Kim Robertson, Matt Robertson and Mark Johnson. Her family also includes a sister Erma Simon of Windber, PA. Grace died in Kalamazoo, MI on Sunday April 6, 1997. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Margaret (Ripple) Barnes; her husband DeVere in 1971; four brothers and three sisters. Friends may call at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren Funeral Home, Vicksburg Chapel on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 where a Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in Mt. Ever Rest cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Humane Society.

ROGERS, Floyd E.

Floyd's life began on April 1, 1927 in Colorado City, Texas. He served honorably as a Lt. Colonel in the US Army-Army Air Corp during World War II and Korea. Floyd's family includes 3 children, Kathleen and Don Taylor of Texas, Steve and Ramona Rogers of Portage, and Dean Rogers of Bloomingdale; a sister, Pat Wells of Arizona; six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Floyd died early Thursday, April 3, 1997 in Kalamazoo. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Ann Rogers in 1993 and a grandson, Jayson Dean Rogers. A Celebration of Life service with Full Military Honors will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday at Ft. Custer National cemetery, Augusta. Interment of cremains of both Floyd and Beverly together will follow. Simpson, Robert E.

Robert's life began on June 6, 1933 in Mendon Township. Robert grew up in the Vicksburg area and attended Vicksburg Schools, graduating while doing duty in the service. Robert served his country for 2 1/2 years during the Korean War. He met his future wife Alma Prough while she was visiting a mutual friend in Vicksburg. They were married on October 29, 1955 in Vicksburg. Together they had five children, Robert and his wife Sheri Simpson of Mattawan, Kathleen Vaughn of Mendon, Stanley Simpson of Vicksburg, Alice and her husband Al Smith of Vicksburg, and Peggy Allers and Rick of Vicksburg. Robert enjoyed spending time with his nine grandchildren, Jamie and Jeremy Simpson, Jennifer, Julie and Ron Vaughn, David and Rebecca Smith, Rachel and Ashley Allers. Robert also has a great granddaughter, Katelin Vandeberg. After retiring from Cytec, formally know as American Cyanamid after 25 years, Robert loved to go camping so much that, during the last two years he worked at Oak Shores Camp Ground. He always spent mornings from 9 to 10 am at Ryans for coffee with friends. He liked fishing and just visiting with his neighbors very much. Robert also belonged to The American Legion, Vicksburg Post 213. Robert's family includes eight sisters and brothers, Joyce Sonke and her husband Earl of Portage, Dorothy Dayton of Kalamazoo, Marion Vickery of Vicksburg, Linda Reed and her husband Jim of Scotts, Patrick Simpson and his wife Colleen of Vicksburg, Raymond Simpson and his wife Christien of Sturgis, Melvin Simpson and his wife Suki of Tulsa, Oklahoma and a step-sister Clarabelle Reinveld of Kalamazoo. Robert died in Vicksburg, MI on April 11, 1997. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Leona (Yoemans) Simpson: a sister Joan Dunham and a step-brother Jack Simpson. Friends may spend time with Robert's family at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren Funeral Home, Vicksburg Chapel on Monday from 7 to 9 PM and Tuesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM where a Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday at 1 PM. Interment will follow in Dutton cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Diabetes Association or the Heart Fund.

SINANIAN, Dr. Robert MD

Robert's life began on April 4, 1939 in Marseilles, France. He immigrated to this country in 1948 with his mother, three sisters, and grandmother, and they settled in Ann Arbor, MI near other relatives. Robert's life was a classic example of an American success story. He graduated from Ann Arbor Pioneer High School and completed his pre-medical studies at the University of Michigan, during which times he worked numerous jobs to support himself. Robert was accepted into the U of M Medical School and College and graduated in 1965 with a M.D. in general family practice. He served his medical residency at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI and upon completion entered his first medical practice in Portage. Robert went on to practice emergency room medical work at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo and Community and Leila Hospitals in Battle Creek. In 1985 he established with Dr. Donald Doyle the Down East Medical Center practice on Gull Road at Sprinkle in Kalamazoo, and recently retired in January of this year due to failing health. Robert devoted his life to his medical work and his patients. However, his most important interests were always his family and good health. He loved to travel and he enjoyed sports, especially racquetball. Robert's family includes his wife, Barbara (Amesbury) Sinanian, whom he married on June 5, 1993, and their son, Michael Robert Sinanian; his son, Peter Sinanian and fiancée Carolyn Kuehn of Philadelphia PA; his daughter, Julie Ekman and husband Erik and their son, Grayson Ekman of Las Vegas, NV; his mother, Rose Sinanian of Ann Arbor; 3 sisters, Florence Vartanian and husband John, Jacqueline Frieder, and Danielle Sinanian, all of Ann Arbor; parents-in-law, Robert and Jacqueline Amesbury of Flushing; a sister-in-law, Laura Amesbury of Grand Blanc; a brother-in-law and his wife, Stephen and Victoria Amesbury and their son, Robbie of Chicago; and 3 nephews and wives, Mark and Marsha Vartanian, Chris and Lori Vartanian, and John Vartanian. Robert died Tuesday, April 8, 1997 in Kalamazoo. He was preceded in death by his father, Ardache Sinanian. Friends may visit with Robert's family 6-9 PM Saturday at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren Funeral Home, Portage Chapel, Lovers Lane at Milham. A Celebration of Life service will be held 2:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial gifts in Robert's memory may be made to the Michael Robert Sinanian Education Trust Fund, c\o 5975 Lovers Lane, Portage, MI 49002.
