Joe died peacefully on Thursday, just a few weeks short of his 87th birthday. He was born and raised in Lansing, Michigan, where he met and married the love of his life, Marion in 1936. Marion preceded Joe in death in 1994. Joe was a graduate of the University of Michigan, where he was a fraternity brother and friend of President Ford in the Delta Kappa Epsilon house. During the Depression, Joe took a job as an elevator operator on a passenger liner going from New York to San Francisco for 62 cents a day. And you know, they never tipped elevator operators, he laughed. Joe joined the Navy during World War II, where he served as a lieutenant in the Philippines. Joe started his banking career as an assistant cashier of the Holt State Bank in 1948. At that time, the bank had deposits of only $1.5 million. That bank merged with American Bank and Trust Company of Lansing. Joe was Executive Vice-President of American Bank and Trust when he was offered the presidency of the Ann Arbor Bank in 1961. Under Joe's leadership, Ann Arbor Bank became Ann Arbor Bank and Trust Company and grew and prospered. With great foresight, Joe formed the first bank holding company in Michigan. Ultimately, through holding company mergers, it became First of America Bancorp (now National City). Joe served on the board of directors of First of America Bancorp and continued as Chairman of the Board of Ann Arbor Bank and Trust until his retirement in 1983. Joe was elected President of the Michigan Bankers' Association and was then appointed to the board of directors of the Detroit Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. He was very proud of those honors. Joe was very active in his community. He served on the boards of directors of the Ann Arbor Chamber of Commerce and the Washtenaw United Way. He was a co-founder and trustee of the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation. He was an active member of the Ann Arbor Rotary Club and the First Presbyterian Church. In retirement, Joe and Marion spent their summers at Burt Lake, MI and their winters in Tequesta, FL. Joe loved his family very much and the relationship was mutual. He also loved golf, very dry Martinis, and chocolate sundaes, and not necessarily in that order. He was a voracious reader, a dedicated walker, and punctual to a fault. Joe is survived by his daughter, Joan Wright; his son, Bob (Terry); grandchildren, Foster Wright, Graham Wright, Mark Foster, David Foster; his great grandchildren, Meghan Foster and Jack Foster. A memorial service celebrating Joe's life will be held at the First Congregational Church, 608 E. William, Ann Arbor on Monday, October 25 at 4 p.m. Joe has been cremated at his request.
