Mrs. Sandra Jean Lick
Sandra Jean Lick, 66 of Vanderbilt died Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at her home. Mrs. Lick, a lifelong resident of Vanderbilt was born January 15, 1939, the daughter of William Henry and Eva M. (Holborn) Goff. On May 21, 1960 in Vanderbilt, she married Raymond Lick. She was a loving wife and a devoted mother. She relished in motherhood and later found becoming a grandmother just as rewarding. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Mrs Lick is survived by her husband, Raymond; her children, William (Annette) of Oklahoma, Dwain (Laura) of Alpena, Vernard (Barbara) of Colorado, and Susan (Robert) Day of Midland. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren that she adored, Niles, Thomas, Matthias, Katelyn, Kyla, Kimberly, Kayla, Mariah, Ashley,Jennifer and Kevin; her brothers and sisters, Helen Thomas, Howard (Esther) Goff, Nick Goff, Don Goff, Rolland (Linetta) Goff, Loretta Wesnan and Sharon (Craig) Johnston. Seven brothers and sisters preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 11, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. from the Nelson Funeral Home, Reverend Robert Butler, officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview cemetery in Gaylord. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 1-8 p.m. and on Monday from 11 a.m. until the time of services. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan or to the oncology units at Northern Michigan Hospitalin Petoskey or Otsego Memorial Hospital in Gaylord, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord,MI 49734.

Mrs. Martha Nowak
Mrs. Martha C. Nowak, 85 of Gaylord died Sunday, May 1, 2005. Martha was born in Boyne Falls on September 14, 1919, the daughter of John & Helen (Dzwik) Skop. She was raised in Boyne Falls and later moved to Gaylord where she raised her family. Life as a farmer’s wife kept her busy but she still found time to make rosaries for family and friends and quilts for her children. She also enjoyed wild berry picking but her real passion in life was gardening. She was a member of Holy Redeemer parish in Vanderbilt and the Daughters of Isabella. She was preceded in death by her first husband Joe Malak in 1942 and her second husband John Nowak in 1985. She is survived by her children, Rita (William) VanGorder of Grand Rapids, Joseph (Cecelia) of Lewiston, Joann (Nelson) Schriber of Beaverton, Sister Monica “Trudy” Nowak of Missouri, Lawrence (Sue) of Gaylord, Ronald (Sally) of Gaylord, Robert (Sandy) of Gaylord, Christine (Jeff) DeHann of Rockford; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sisters, Rita Hock of Florida, Ann Skop of Gaylord, Felicia Francis of Detroit, Sophie Francis of Gaylord and Angie Pylar of Ohio; and one brother, Ray Skop of Boyne City. Two sisters, Theresa Miller and Virginia Bacholszky preceded her in death. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Wednesday, May 2, 2005 4, 2005 at 11 a.m. from Holy Redeemer Church in Vanderbilt, Rev. John McCracken officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary cemetery. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Tuesday from 3-8 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday beginning at 10 a.m. St. Mary Daughters of Isabella will recite the rosary Tuesday afternoon at 3:15 p.m. Contributions in memory of Mrs. Nowak may be made to the Otsego County Food Pantry or to any local organization that helps feed the poor, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord MI 49734.

Mrs. Marjorie "Marge" Olds
Mrs. Marjorie E. “Marge” Olds, 76 of Gaylord died Sunday, March 6. 2005. Mrs. Olds was born in Neoga, Illinois on March 19, 1928 and had lived in Warren for 11 years before moving to Gaylord in 1940. She was a 1946 graduate of Gaylord High School. On June 15, 1946 she married Lawrence Olds, who survives. Mrs. Olds had been employed by the Gaylord State Bank (now Fifth Third Bank) for 20 years, retiring in 1985. She was a member of the 1st Congregational Church, the Gaylord Country Club and also a member of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed golfing and reading. Mrs. Olds is survived by her husband, Larry; her children, Wesley A. (Kathie) Olds of Florida, Lynda (Jay) Steenrod of Idaho, Steven (Connie) Olds of Gaylord, Ron Olds of Gaylord; five grandchildren, Lori (Beau) Vallier, Eric (Shaana) Olds, Kevin (Melissa) Olds, Jason Olds and Jennifer Olds; one great-grandson and one great-granddaughter; one brother, Don (Janis) Bolin of Gaylord; and one sister, Delores (Willard) Turner of California. MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held Thursday, March 31, at 2 pm at First Congreational Church. Burial will take place at Fairview cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the 1st Congregational Church or to the Eastern Star, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord MI 49734.

Mr. Charles Porta
Charles M. Porta, 65 of Gaylord died Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at his home. Mr. Porta was born in Detroit on January 21, 1940. He was raised in Detroit and in 1965 began a career as a police patrol officer with the City of Detroit, 10th Precinct. In 1972 he changed departments and began working on Belle Isle with the city’s Harbor Master Division. He retired from law enforcement in 1995. Mr. Porta served in the military for 30 years, including 2 years with the United States Navy and 28 years in the Naval Reserves. He will be remembered for his patriotism. Mr. Porta was a member of the Detroit Police Officers Association and the Retired Police Officers Association (Snowbirds). He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, and Sub vets, Inc., the Thread Fin Association and the Loyal Order of Moose. He is survived by his wife, Joanne; daughters, Kathy Frame of Gaylord and Charlotte (Jeff) Salo of Dearborn Heights; five grandchildren, Keith Meeker, Kurt and Kelli Frame, and Aaron and Jessica Salo; two great-grandchildren, Eric Meeker and Caleb Frame; two sisters, Mary Jane Conway of North Carolina and Sarah Mae Blumling of Pennsylvania; two brothers, Edward O'Keffe of Livonia and Michael O’Keffe of Whitmore Lake. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2005 at 11 AM from St Mary Cathedral, Reverend John McCracken officiating. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Friday from 3-9 PM and at the cathedral on Saturday beginning at 10 AM. A parish wake service will be held Friday evening at 6:30 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to St. Mary Cathedral, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord MI 49734.

Mrs. Dorothy Ray
Mrs. Dorothy Ray, 77 of Topinabee, died Thursday, March 3, 2005 at Hospice House in Cheboygan. Dorothy was born in Chicago, IL on May 21, 1927, the daughter of John and Effie (Huizenga) DeJong. She moved to Topinabee in 1962. Prior to her move she worked for the New York Central Railroad in Chicago. On January 21, 1951 she married Digby Ray. He preceded her in death on June 10, 1996. Mrs. Ray is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Walter Ellis of Topinabee; grandchildren Adam (Lisa Wilson) Ellis and Megan (Aaron) Rohloff; great grandchildren Caz, Alyssa and Julian Rohloff; her sister Marion (Richard) Cummings; and a brother John DeJong. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews including Jim & Lori Cummings; her cherished friends Tim & Chris Bauer and her treasured best friend Lilly Nichols. Along with her husband she was also preceded in death by her sister Annabelle Berndt, and her sister-in-law Marie “Sis” DeJong. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, March 10, 2005 at 2 PM from the Topinabee Community Church, Pastor Mike Saunders, officiating. Burial will take place at Burt-Mullett cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice House, Hospice of the Straits-Cheboygan, 722 South St., Cheboygan, MI 49721. Envelopes will also be available at the church. Mrs. Clara Renkie
Mrs. Clara Rose Renkie, 86, of Gaylord died Tuesday, January 18, 2004 at Christian Park Health Center in Escanaba. Mrs. Renkie was born in Gaylord on June 17, 1918, the daughter of the late Joseph & Annie (Borowiak) Krzemien. She was raised in Gaylord and in 1941 moved to Boyne Falls. In 1985 she returned to Gaylord. She had been living in Escanaba the past 6 months She was a member of St. Mary Cathedral parish, St. Mary Altar Rosary Society and had been a volunteer for RSVP. In 1941 she married John Renkie. He preceded her in death in 1972. Mrs. Renkie is survived by two daughters, Mary Yarger of Detroit and Jean Braun of Escanaba; 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren; two step-children, Irene Zickus of Grand Rapids and Edwin (Jan) Renkie of Remus; two sisters, Helen Marowski of Gaylord and Rita Birtschinger of Westland. She was preceded in death by her brothers Walter, Stanley and Chester Krzemien. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Monday, January 24, 2005 at 11 AM from the Diocese of Gaylord Pastoral Center, Rev. David Dupuis, officiating. Burial will take place at St. Augustine cemetery in Boyne Falls. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Sunday beginning at 2 PM and concluding at 4 PM with a rosary by St. Mary Altar Rosary Society. On Monday visitation will be held at the pastoral center beginning at 10 AM. Contributions in memory of Clara Renkie may be made to St. Mary Cathedral to be donated to parish families in need, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord MI 49734.

Mrs. Dolores Schuck
Dolores Madeline Schuck (neé Morian), 86, of Gaylord died Jan. 21, 2005. She was born in Sandusky, Ohio, Jan. 18, 1919 to John and Alma Morian. She was schooled in Sandusky and graduated from Sandusky High School. Mrs. Schuck was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Richard J., and infant son, Richard Allen. A charter member of Peace Lutheran Church, Mrs. Schuck belonged to the quilting group and several Bible-study groups. She has lived in Gaylord since 1970 and resided at Alten Zimmer for the past several years. Mrs. Schuck is survived by nieces, Beverly Fry Wolff of Garden City, Marilyn Fry Cummins of Livonia, Shirley Fry Briggs of Crooked River Ranch, Ore., and Martha Fry of Johannesburg. She leaves many friends at Alten Zimmer and Peace Lutheran, especially Mrs. Hope Washburn, a friend of many years. Memorials may be given to the Karmonos Cancer Institute of Detroit, through the Nelson Funeral Home, PO Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734. Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m. from the Nelson Funeral Home, the Rev. Thomas Mammoser officiating. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery, Gaylord. Visitation at the funeral home will be held today, Wednesday, beginning at 10 a.m. until the time of services.

Mrs. Christine Sides
Mrs. Christine Ann Sides, 46 of Gaylord died Friday, April 29, 2005 at her home. She was born in Gaylord on May 21, 1958, the daughter of Alex & Frances (Micka) Borowiak. She was a 1976 graduate of St. Mary High School, and later worked at various places including flower shops, the Alpine Center, the Little Village and most recently had been a teacher’s aid. She loved her dogs and enjoyed flowers and gardening, scrap booking bird watching and reading. She was a member of St. Mary Cathedral parish. Christine was preceded in death by her mother Frances in 1986 and her husband Steve in 1992. She is survived by two sons, Aaron and Myles Sides; her dad, Alex Borowiak of Gaylord; her-mother-in-law, Patricia Sides of Vanderbilt; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Tuesday, May 3, 2005 at 11 AM from St. Mary Cathedral, Father John McCracken, officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection cemetery in Gaylord. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Monday from 1-9 PM and at the cathedral on Tuesday beginning at 10 AM. A parish wake service will be held Monday evening at 6:30 PM followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the children of Christine Sides or to St. Mary Cathedral Schools, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord MI 49734.

Mrs. Anna Sitkiewicz
Mrs. Anna H. Sitkiewicz, 84, lifetime resident of Gaylord died Saturday, April 16, 2005 at Tendercare. Mrs. Sitkiewicz was born in Gaylord on July 15, 1920 the daughter of Martin & Agnes (Krys) Prusakiewicz. She had worked for the Sugar Bowl in Gaylord for many years and was a member of St. Mary Cathedral parish. Mrs. Sitkiewicz was preceded in death by her husband Peter Sitkiewicz, her sons Chester and Richard Sitkiewicz, great-granddaughter Sarah Sitkiewicz, her brother Joseph Prusakiewicz and her sister Rose Gapinski. She is survived by her children, Leonard (Rita) Sitkiewicz of Gaylord, Alvin (Roseann) Sitkiewicz of Vanderbilt, Marlene (Robert) Peterson of Gaylord, Evelyn (Raymond) O’Dell of Gaylord; 13 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; her brother, Chester Prusakiewicz of Gaylord; her sister, Emily Kucharek of Warren. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. from St. Mary Catheral, Rev. John McCracken, officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary cemetery in Gaylord. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Monday from 1-8 p.m. and on Tuesday at 9:30 until prayers at 10:30. A parish rosary will be held on Monday at 5:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Cathedral through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord MI 49734.

Mr. Richard Sitkiewicz
Richard H. Sitkiewicz, 60, of Gaylord died Friday, March 11, 2005. He was born in Gaylord on June 17, 1944. Mr. Sitkiewicz was a graduate of St. Mary High School. He retired from Chrysler in 1997 after 34 years of employment. He served with the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Mr. Sitkiewicz was preceded in death by his father Peter Sitkiewicz and his brother Chester Sitkiewicz. He is survived by two daughters, Deanna (Eric) Johnson of Temecula, CA, Brenda (Rick) Phipps of Crystal Lake, IL; one granddaughter, Ella Johnson; his mother, Anna Sitkiewicz of Gaylord; brothers and sisters, Leonard (Rita) Sitkiewicz of Gaylord, Alvin (Roseann) Sitkiewicz of Vanderbilt, Marlene (Robert) Peterson of Gaylord, Evelyn (Raymond) O’Dell of Gaylord; and many nieces and nephews. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Monday, March 21, 2005 at 1 PM from St. Mary Cathedral, Rev. John McCracken, officiating. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Sunday from 1-8 PM and on Monday from 11 AM until prayers at 12:30 PM. Mr. Vern Slack
LaVern “Vern” C. Slack, age 83 of Elmira died Sunday, April 10th at Boulder Park Terrace in Charlevoix. Mr. Slack was born on July 25, 1921 in Plainwell, MI., and resided most of his life in Elmira, before moving to Boulder Park about 1 ˝ years ago. He had been employed at the Bronson Rod & Reel Company, and also served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He loved to go for walks, fish, deer hunting, and enjoyed making maple syrup. Mr. Slack was preceded in death by his wife Viva in 1990, his son Michael, his brothers Harold and Fred and 3 sisters Mary Glaser, Ruth Bowman, and Pearl Muma. He is survived by his children Sandy (LeRoy) Bates, Connie (Donte) SanMigaul, Edie (David) Bierschbach, and Kevin (April) Slack. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and his brother Gerald (Ethel) Slack. Visitation at the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord will be held on Thursday, April 14, from 11:00 am until the time of service at 1:00 pm, with Rev. Orville Theaker officiating. Burial will take place at Maple Hill cemetery in Elmira. Memorial contributions may be made to the family through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI. 49734.

Christopher “Teddy” Smith
Mr. Christopher T. “Teddy” Smith, age 45, of Gaylord, died Sunday, February 27, 2005 in Gaylord. Teddy was born December 14, 1959 in Detroit. He grew up in Birmingham, where he graduated from Seaholm High School. He was on the wrestling and track teams, and still holds a school track record. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during 1976-77. In 1994 he moved to Gaylord, and had worked locally as a roofer. Surviving are his children Christopher and Jason Smith of Royal Oak, and Justin and Corrin Brosch of Gaylord; his father, Dr. Jim Smith of Gaylord; his longtime companion, Carol Brosch of Gaylord; sisters, Stephanie Hurd of Florida and Leslie Smith of Gaylord; brothers Kevin Smith of Colorado and David Smith of Detroit. He was preceded in death by his mother Carole Smith in 1998. Private family memorial services will be held. Memorial contributions may be made for his children Justin and Corrin Brosch, through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.

Mr. Lloyd ‘Buddy’ Tolman
Lloyd “Buddy” Tolman, 79 of Frederic passed away Monday, January 24, 2005 at Mercy Hospital in Grayling. Buddy was born in New Swanzy, MI on November 26, 1925. He had been living at Timberview Village in Frederic for several years. His friends were many and his sense of humor was honest. For many years he kept track of most of the Gaylord city workers and what jobs they were doing. If there was a question on the sewer or water lines, they would say “Ask Buddy Tolman”. He taught his family and friends so many things in life. He will be greatly missed and with much love, never forgotten. Buddy was preceded in death by his parents Wesley and Ruth Tolman. He is survived by two brothers, Dale (Romayne) Tolman of Gaylord and W. Wayne (Pat) Tolman of Myrtle Beach, SC; one sister, Doris (Harris) Miller of Sault Ste. Marie, MI; seven nieces; one nephew; three great-nieces and four great-nephews. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Friday, Jan 28, 2005 at 1 PM from the Nelson Funeral Home, Reverend John Naile, officiating. Burial will take place at Fairview cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday and Thursday from 4-8 PM and on Friday morning from 11 AM until the time of services. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, through the Nelson Funeral home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord MI 49734
