Smith, Hadley J. Ph.D., Ann Arbor, MI

Age 81, passed away Friday afternoon at his home with his loving family at his side. Professor Smith was born May 5, 1918, the son of G. Hadley and Lucy (Casey) Smith in Detroit. He was a graduate of the University of Michigan and also received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. In 1959, he was a NSF Post Doctoral Fellow at Harvard and in 1974, he was a Guest Scientist at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratories, In New Mexico. Professor Smith was on the teaching University of Michigan Department of Applied Mechanics and Engineering for 32 years, retiring in 1984. He was a faithful member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 2250 E. Stadium Blvd., where a memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, November 15, 1999 with Rev. Fr. James McDougall, Celebrant. On October 18, 1952, he married Maureen Kelley in Royal Oak, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Hadley J. Smith Jr. of Gehenna, Ohio, Kelley (Jan Fenske) Smith of Charlevoix, Rowan (Sue) Smith of West Branch, Maura (Bob) Dalian of Ann Arbor, Erin (Marek) Minta of Warwick, NY and Colleen (Charlie) Huffman of North Lake. A brother, Boyd (Betsy) Smith of Whispering Pines, SC. Six grandchildren, Shaelyn and Casey Smith, Christopher, Caili, Amy Dalian and Molly Minta. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made in Professor Smith's honor to the Hospice of Southeastern Michigan or Motor Meals of Ann Arbor or a charity of your choice. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service.

Barber, Dorothy M. (Savage), Jackson, MI

passed away Saturday, November 13, 1999 at W.A. Foote Hospital. She was born July 27, 1913 in Salem, Iowa. She was preceded in death by husband Maynard in 1979; her parents; four brothers; her son; and a grandson. Survivors include children, Roberta (Arthur) Cobb of Chelsea, Jean (Richard) Todd of Titus, AL, Jerry (Dee) Barber of Parma, Ken (Linda) Barber of Bay City and Peggy (Kevin) Johnson of Jackson; brother, Lewis (Esther) Savage of Salem, IA; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be held at the Ganson St. Baptist Church, 637 W. Ganson St., Jackson on Wednesday, November 17, 1999 at 11 a.m. Pastor Don Deaver will officiate. Interment will follow at the Fitchburg cemetery. Visitation will be Monday evening 6-8 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at PATIENCE-MONTGOMERY Funeral Home, 406 First Street, Jackson, MI.

Pepper, Kathryn Pee Wee, Ypsilanti Township, MI

Age 74, died Sunday, November 14, 1999 at her residence following an extended illness. She was born June 2, 1925 in Paintsville, KY, the daughter of Ballard and Bessie (Smith) Jenkins. She came to Ypsilanti in 1943 to work at the Bomber Plant. On February 16, 1946, she married Earl G. Pepper and he survives. She was employed by Ford Motor Company for 27 years,retiring from the Saline plant in 1987. She was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose #782, Ypsilanti. Survivors in addition to her husband include her mother, Bessie Jenkins of Mechanicstown, OH; three sons, James William (Peggy) of Ypsilanti, Ronald Earl of Ypsilanti, and Phillip Michael (Cindy) of Clinton; two daughters, Betty Jean Stumbo of Monroe, and Judy Fae Merritt Pepper (Donna Davis) of Rush City, MN; twelve grandchildren, Steven, Rodney, Michael, April, Jennifer, Earl Michael, Jeremy, Danielle, Mandy, Steven, Patrick and Melissa; ten great-grandchildren; one brother, Ballard Jenkins Jr. of Carrollton, OH; two sisters, Judy Gurganis of Denver, CO and Faye Vernon of Mechanicstown, OH. She was preceded in death by her father, Ballard Jenkins Sr. and three brothers, Henry, Robert and William Jenkins. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 17 at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel with Rev. Walker Harris of Belleville Free Will Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Washtenong Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or Hospice of Southfield. Envelopes are available at the funeral home where the family will receive friends 6-9 p.m. Monday and 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Yates, Frances A. (Fran), Ypsilanti, MI

Age 85, died Sunday, November 14, 1999 at the home of her niece, Virginia Jacques, after an extended illness. She was born on October 12, 1914 in Ypsilanti, the daughter of Sheridan U. and Jessie (Alford) Hawks. Mrs. Yates was retired from the Beyer Hospital. Surviving are nieces and nephews, Virginia Jacques of Ypsilanti Twp., Shirley A. Schmitt of Westland, Gary (Shirley) Hawks of Okemos, Harold (Nancy) Hawks Jr. of Ypsilanti Twp., Joyce (Ronald) Swanson of TX,Robert (Helen) Hawks of Tucson, AZ, Erwin (Joan) Hawks of CO, and Lois (LeRoy) Dibble of Clearwater, FL; numerous grand-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy Yates in June of 1998; four brothers, Harold, Lloyd, Earl and Gerald Hawks. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 17 at the JANOWIAK FUNERAL HOME, GEER-LOGAN CHAPEL, with the Rev. Janet Marvar of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Yate's memory may be made to the Arbor Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home where the family will receive friends today from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday from 1-4 and 6-9 p.m.

Claxton, Ellen, Ypsilanti, MI

Age 61, died Saturday, November 13, 1999 in the comfort of her home. She was born January 24, 1938 in Lake City, Tennessee, daughter of Austin and Margie (Helton) Goodman. Mrs. Claxton was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 73, Belleville. She was also involved with the Boy Scouts of America with her sons. Mrs. Claxton worked at the Ypsilanti State Hospital in the food service dept and also for Econopak. She will always be remembered for her love of arts and crafts. Survivors include two children, Crista (Stephen) Stencel of Ypsilanti and Danny (Rosemary) Claxton of Pinckney; three grandchildren, Carrie and Amanda Stencel, and Brandon Claxton; one sister, Iona (Al) Alber of Ocala, Florida and Willard (Joyce) Goodman of Ypsilanti; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, David Claxton; her parents; one sister, Evelyn Claxton and one brother, E.L. Goodman.Funeral will be held Wednesday,November 17, 1999 at 2:30 p.m. at the JANOWIAK FUNERAL HOME, GEER-LOGAN CHAPEL with Pastor Randall Bomey of the First Assembly of God Church of Saline officiating. Burial will follow Highland cemetery. Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Tuesday from 5-9 p.m.

Hyde, Robert J. Bob, Tecumseh, MI

Age 74, died Saturday, November 13, 1999 at Herrick Memorial Hospital. Visitation at the Couture-Handler Funeral Home, Tecumseh on Monday from 4-8 p.m. and Tuesday from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Bechler, Arnold W., Hamburg Twp., MI

Died November 13, 1999. Visitation Monday 6-9 p.m., Tuesday 2-9 p.m. at BELL-BOREK FUNERAL HOME, Hamburg. Funeral service 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 17, 1999 at the Hiawatha Beach Church, Hamburg. Burial in North Hamburg cemetery.

Kuhn, Betty Jane, Ann Arbor, MI

Betty Jane Kuhn, Ann Arbor resident for over 31 years, died on Saturday, November 13, 1999 at the age 81. She was born October 4, 1918 in Royal Oak, MI, daughter of Harold Walker and Gladys Steves. On April 10, 1934 she was married to Richard Kuhn and they settled in the Milford area. Her husband preceded her in death in 1966. Later, she moved to Ann Arbor, where employed by the University of Michigan for 14 years. She retired in 1983 and maintained a lively interest in both current affairs and weather phenomena. Mrs. Kuhn will always be remembered for her extraordinary love and devotion to her family. She is survived by four daughters, Barbara (Ed) Monty of Seabrook Island, SC, Carol (Bill) Hancock of Ann Arbor, MI; Linda Kuhn (Tony Lavender) of Boulder, CO and Karen Kuhn of San Francisco, CA; four brothers; five sisters; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and one brother. A visitation will be held at Muehlig Funeral Chapel on Monday, November 15, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 16 at Muehlig Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Forest Hill cemetery.

Carlson, Ruth Rosella, Dexter, MI

Ruth, age 87, passed away Saturday, November 13, 1999 at the Chelsea Community Hospital. She was born on September 28, 1912 in Moorhead, Minnesota to Robert T. and Mary (Peterson) Cranston. Ruth, at an early age, moved with her family to farm the prairie land in Big Valley, Alberta, Canada. Although times were hard and the winters harsh, she recalled fond memories of her life in Big Valley As Ruth was to enter tenth grade, her father was caught in a blizzard and suffered severe frostbite, forcing the family to move to Longview, Washington. After her father's recovery, they returned to Minnesota where she met Oscar L. Carlson. They were married May 22, 1935 in Sisseton, South Dakota. Because of the severe droughts of the 1930's they left Minnesota and moved to Dexter, Michigan in 1940. She worked at Dexter Products, of which she and her husband were co-owners until her retirement in 1958. Ruth was a great cook and enjoyed taking care of her family and home. She was a member of the Harmony Rebekah Lodge #460 in Dexter for over 50 years. She and Oscar were married for 57 years. He passed away August 3, 1992. Ruth is survived by daughters, Arlene Arnett of Dansville, MI and Joan (Jerry) Wireman of Dexter; son, John (Medreth) Carlson of Howell; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; special nephew, Robert Acker (Joanne) of Carson City, Nevada; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by five brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 17at 11 a.m. at HOSMER-MUEHLIG FUNERAL CHAPEL with the Rev. John O'Dell of the Dexter Gospel Church officiating. Burial will follow at the Washtenong Memorial Park cemetery. Memorials may be made to The Dexter Gospel Church or to the Individualized Home Nursing Care/Hospice, 3003 Washtenaw Ave., Ann Arbor, MI 48104. Envelopes will be available at the Hosmer-Muehlig Funeral Chapel where friends may call Tuesday from 5-9 p.m. A Rebekah Service will be held Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. We have many fond memories of our mother to cherish and her life is best summarized by Philippians 4:11, Not that I speak in respect of want: For I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. We will miss her very much.

Broxholm, Paul L., Manchester, MI

Age 74, died November 14, 1999. Paul is survived by his beloved wife Helen. Dear father to Julia (Fred Ormond) and David (Nancy); grandfather of Alan Collins; brother to Josephine Jakubus. He was preceded in death by brother, George; sisters, Kay Hare and Doris Ehrman. Arrangements by O'Brian/Sullivan Funeral Home, 41555 Grand River Ave, Novi. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 16, 1-9 p.m. and Rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral Liturgy 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 17, 1999. Burial will take place at Holy Sepulchre. Pasquantonio, John, Ann Arbor, MI

Age 91, died Monday, November 15, 1999 at Arbor Hospice Residence. John had retired from the Michigan Chandelier Company after numerous years in the sales and shipping dept. He was a long time member of the Teamsters Union, former professional boxer, and an avid bowler. John is survived by his loving wife, Germaine Mullins Pasquantonio; his daughters, Beverly (Arthur) Wilkins, Dorothy (Ken) Savage; sons, John (Carolyn), Gerald (Kathleen), Daniel (Jane) Pasquantonio; 12 grandchildren; and12 great-grandchildren. He is alsosurvived by four sisters, Ada (Chic) Kellough, Lena VanDelinder, Leah Donati, Louise Thomas; numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at MUEHLIG FUNERAL CHAPEL, 403 S. Fourth Ave, Ann Arbor, MI on Wednesday, November 17, 1999 from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. with Scripture Service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, East Stadium and St. Francis on Thursday, November 18, 10:30 a.m. with Father Dwight Ezop officiating. Interment at Arborcrest cemetery. In lieu of flowers,memorial contributions may be made to Arbor Hospice, 2366 Oak Valley Dr., Ann Arbor, MI 48103.

Egas, Govert Joe, Ann Arbor, MI

Age 88, passed away November 15, 1999. He was born on February 19, 1911 in Franeker, Netherlands. He was preceded in death by wife of 61 years, Gepke. He is survived by his three children, Lucy (Fritz) Bausch, Jan (Judy) Egas, Dee Drews; five grandchildren, Scott Drews, Chrissy Kulka, Steven Drews, Johnny Egas, David Bausch; ten great-grandchildren. He retired from University of Michigan and was a member of the G.B.U. He will be greatly missed, and we will always remember his great sense of humor and his beautiful smile. According to his wishes,cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial service on Thursday, November 18, 1999 at the Muehlig Funeral Chapel. Private interment will be in Bethlehem cemetery.Memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association.

Schneider, Amanda E., Ann Arbor, MI

Went with the Lord, November 15, 1999, age 88. Preceded in death by two husbands, Russell O. Borck in 1951, and Walter W. Schneider in 1994; a son, Larry R. Borck in 1995; and a grandson, Roger D. Elrod in 1998.Survived by daughter, Joyce (Grant) Lindsay; her granddaughter, Dawn (Daniel) Gilbert; daughter-in-law,Carol A. Borck; sister, Lorraine Housewright; special loving friend, Edmund Mueller; several nieces, nephews and close friends. Amanda was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed sewing. Amanda loved people and she had a special impact on those she knew and loved. She will be greatly missed and we have been blessed for the years we have had her. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou are also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. 1 Timothy, Chapter 6, Verse 12; The Blessedness of Trusting God. Praise ye the Lord. Praise the Lord, O my Soul. While I live will I praise the Lord: I will sing praise unto my God while I have any being. Psalm 146. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday November 17, 1999 at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to American Cancer Society or American Heart Assoc., or Zion Lutheran Church. Arrangements by Muehlig Funeral Chapel.
