Johnson, Patricia Irma, Detroit, MI

(Formerly of Ann Arbor)
Age 76, passed away November 10, 1999. Pat was born May 22, 1923 in Memphis, TN to Samuel and Lena Calhoun, both preceded her in death. Pat's only son, Thaddus Carter, also preceded her in death on November 7, 1999. On July 18, 1997, Pat married Mr. James L. Johnson, who lovingly cared for her. She was formerly married to Mr. Herbert Fowler and he preceded her in death. The Golf Classic in Ann Arbor is held every year in Mr. Fowler's name. She had worked at Goodyears Dept. store for more than 30 years. She is preceded by her three sisters. She leaves to mourn, her two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two god-daughters. Services will be Friday, November 20; family hour is at 10 a.m. and the funeral will be at 11 a.m. at Carter Memorial Metropolitan AME Church, on West Grand Blvd, Detroit.

Clark, Edith N.,

Age 92, passed away on Tuesday, November 16, 1999 at Arbor Hospice Residence. She was born February 22, 1907 in Eddyville, Iowa, the seventh of nine children born to Albert and Mary Secress. On April 20, 1924 she married Charles E. Clark; he preceded her in death on August 16, 1981. She was also preceded by a son, Robert E. Clark on November 18, 1989. All of her married life was spent in Silvis & East Moline, IL where she was active in volunteer work, Rebecca Lodge, Crescent Club, and a member of the Silvis United Methodist Church. She especially enjoyed the Wednesday quilting group and senior citizens activities at the church where she leaves behind many kind and thoughtful friends. In July 1991 she moved to Ann Arbor, MI to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Ronald and Mary Ann Noden, and they survive. After her move to Ann Arbor, she became a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Dorcas Circle of Ann Arbor. In addition to her daughter and son-in-law, she is survived by four grand-children, Mary Beth Noden of Ann Arbor, Todd Noden and his wife Amy of Northbrook, IL, Amy and Lori Clark of Chesterland, OH; and daughter-in-law, Nina Clark, also of Chesterland; two great-granddaughters, Grace and Eleanor Noden of Northbrook, IL. A family graveside service will be held in Eddyville, IA. Arrangements by MUEHLIG FUNERAL CHAPEL.

Weaver, Louise E. (Horn), Ypsilanti Twp., MI

Age 86, went to be with her Lord Wednesday, November 17, 1999. She was born March 4, 1913 in Denton, MI, the daughter of Otto and Anna Marie (Seymour) Lidke. She retired from Universal Die Casting. Mrs. Weaver was an active member of Pentecostal Church of God, and she loved the Lord. Survivors include three sons, George Horn of Ypsilanti, Richard (Linda) Horn of Ypsilanti, and Robert (Christine) Horn of Canton; and two daughters, Patricia (Robert) Fish of Fenton and Bonnie (Bob) Hagar of Tecumseh; several grandchildren, great grand-children and great-great grandchildren; and a brother, Morris (Helen) Lidke of Westland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Weaver; four sons, Glenn, Ray, Harold and James Horn. Funeral service 10 a.m Saturday, November 20 at the Pentecostal Church of God, 45 Oregon St., Ypsilanti with Rev. Bob J. Ray officiating. Burial will follow in the Washtenong Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the church. Envelopes will be available at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel where the family will receive friends 6-9 p.m. Thursday, 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Friday, and at the church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of service.

Earley, James E., Milan, MI

Age 40, died November 16, 1999 at his home. He was born November 5, 1959 in Glendora, CA, the son of Gene and Joanne (Ragle) Earley. Jim had been employed with Lucent Technologies in Southfield. Survivors include his loving companion, Timothy Preston of Milan; two children, Amanda Earley and James Edward Earley II, both of Grass Lake; his parents, Gene and Joanne Earley of West Branch; a brother, Phillip (Deborah) Earley of Whitehall; a sister, Cynthia (Mike) Liniski of Homosassa, FL; and his paternal grandmother, Viola Coslet of Tuscola, IL. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home, Milan. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 2-9 p.m. and on Saturday from 11-1 p.m. Contributions may be made in his name to the Shriner's Children Hospital or Aid in Milan

Chandler, Robert C. R.C., Ypsilanti Township, MI

Age 74, passed away Wednesday,November 17, 1999 at his home. He was born June 4, 1925 in Stantonville, TN, the son of Clarence V. and Eunice (Chesser) Chandler. He had served honorably as a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. Mr. Chandler was one of World War II's heroes. He started in boot camp in San Diego, CA and then served three years active duty in the South Pacific on the Mariana Island, Saipan, Tinian, Okinawa and Nagasaki. On Sapian, he was the only survivor out of his squad. He loved his country. On June 28, 1947 he was married to Bea Brown and she survives. Mr. Chandler retired from Eberbach Corporation in Ann Arborin 1990. He was an active member of Antioch Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for over 20 years. Other survivors include one daughter, Diana (Gary) Sandall of Ann Arbor; two granddaughters, Tracy Thatcher of Jupiter, FL and Terry Stout of Ann Arbor; two sisters, Aquilla (Victor) Chaddock of California and Virginia Essary of Cornith, MS; one brother, Carlos (Vernice) Chandler of Corinth, MS; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 20, 1999 at Antioch Baptist Church, 6538 Rawsonville, Belleville, with Rev. Edwin Reese officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland cemetery. Memorials may be made to the church. Envelopes will be available at Stark Funeral Service Moore Memorial Chapel where the family will receive friends 6-9 p.m. Thursday, 4-9 p.m. Friday and at the church on Saturday from Noon-time of service.

Gedney, William J., Ann Arbor, MI

Professor Emeritus William J. Gedney died suddenly Sunday, November 14 at his home. He was born April 4 1915 in Orchards, Washington, the of Viola Woster Gedney and John Gedney. He married Choy Manachip in 1953 and she preceded him in death in 1981. He is survived by his sister Elizabeth Christensen (Harold) of Lompoc CA; niece Christina Marl (Tim) of Everett, Washington; and three first cousins; four children Chat Phatharaphak (Darlene) of Ann Arbor, Sumali Shoup, Sumalai Becker (Philip) and Sumala Reddington (Alfred) all of Grand Rapids; nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Professor Gedney began his academic life as a high school teacher of English in Oregon and Washington after graduating magna cum laude from Whitman College in 1935. He spent his summers studying linguistics at several institutes and after being drafted at the outbreak of WW II, he was assigned to the Army language Unit in New York City. There he worked on Thai Language study and translation, at the same time studying Sanskrit and linguistics at Yale University. After receiving his doctorate in 1947 he went to Thailand, where he stayed for seven years, continuing his study of Thai and working as a translator. During this same period he was assigned to purchase Thai books and handwritten manuscripts for Yale and Cornell and he also began collecting his own materials. His efforts gradually built a collection consisting of nearly 14,000 items in Thai, which he donated to the University of Michigan in 1975. In 1960 Professor Gedney began teaching at the University of Michigan, where he developed language training programs for th earliest Peace Corps groups assigned to Thailand. For the next decade he engaged in strenuous fieldwork on the Tai language family, seeking out speakers of remote dialects spoken in various parts of Southeast Asia and Southern China. In recent years the results of his research were published in eight volumes by the U-M's Center for Southeast Asian Studies. In 1980 Professor Gedney retired from teaching after an active two decades there as professor of linguistics and chair of the Department of Linguistics from 1972 to 1975. In 1981 he was named professor emeritus of linguistics. Long active in the American Oriental Society, he served as its vice-president in 1981 and president in 1982. He has also been an active member of the Linguistic Society of America, the Association for Asian Studies, the Siam Society, the Southeast Asian Linguistic Society and the International Sino-Tibetan Conference. Professor Gedney served as an inspiration to his students as well as to other scholars of literature, linguistics and various fields of Thai studies. Those who worked with him have appreciated the generosity with which he shared his knowledge and insight, as well as his story-telling ability and his sense of humor. A memorial service at 7 p.m., Friday November 19 at Muehlig Chapel, 403 S. Fourth Ave., Ann Arbor, MI. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the U-M's Center for Southeast Asian Studies..

Reed, Grace, Ypsilanti, MI

Age 91, died Wednesday, November 17, 1999 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital after an extended illness. Mrs. Reed was born November 2, 1908 in Hull, England, the daughter of Frederick and Catherine Hardman. She lived there until the age of 19 when she immigrated to Ypsilanti, Michigan. On October 28, 1927 she married Milton C. Reed in Toledo, Ohio. Mrs. Reed was a dedicated mother and homemaker. Survivors include husband, Milton C. Reed; three children, June Wickman of St. Joseph, MI, John Reed and Catherine Reed of Ypsilanti, MI; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Reed was preceded in death by her parents, six sisters and two brothers. Interment will take place next week at Highland cemetery in Ypsilanti. Donations may be made in Mrs. Reeds' name to the Michigan Heart Institute. Arrangements made by JANOWIAK FUNERAL HOME, GEER-LOGAN CHAPEL.

Wellnitz, John, Bay City, MI

Age 71, died Tuesday, September 28, 1999 at Bay Medical Care Facility in Bay City. He was born on March 27, 1928 in Ridgeway, MI, the son of John J. & Ruth E. (Kapnick) Wellnitz. Survivors include three sons and their wives, Kurt & Cheryl Wellnitz of Bay City, Scott Welnitz of Linwood, and Richard and Marge Wellnitz of Glen Pool, OK; one brother, Jack of Chelsea; four grandchildren, Julie, Cletis, Jason, and Eric; three nephews and one niece. A graveside service will be held Saturday, November 27, 4 p.m. at Oak Grove cemetery, Chelsea, with Rev. Peggy Garrigues, Cortelyou officiating. Davis, Jerry Jr.,

Lieutenant Colonel Decorated U.S. Army Veteran of Three Wars and distinguished Business Person.Jerry Davis, Jr. was born January 2, 1925 in Oak Grove, Louisiana, where he grew up and graduated first in his class from Magnolia Training School. A humble beginning for a sharecropper's son destined for the cover of Fortune Magazine (October, 1978)...a man committed to a life of service, his family, his church, his community and his country. A generous, loving and forgiving spirit, a respect for order and tradition and a legendary helping hand were the hallmarks of his life. Lieutenant Colonel Jerry Davis, Jr., United States Army (Retired) a veteran of three wars, WW II, Korea, and Vietnam, where he was an exceptional leader who contributed to the success of our military services wherever he served. After his retirement from the military service, Colonel Davis formed two substantial minority businesses, Unified Services, Inc. in Washington D.C. and UNIBAR Maintenance Services / ACCU-READ Services in Ann Arbor, MI. He was active in community affairs serving on many volunteer boards and councils including the President of M.U.S.C.L.E. a non-profit that built the first major homeless shelter in the Washington, D.C. area. He was extremely active in Riverside Baptist Church, for over thirty years, where he held many positions including Chairman of the Board of Deacons. Mr. Davis spent 26 years in the US Army serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam during which time he progressed through all enlisted ranks and into the officers grades to retire as Lieutenant Colonel. His distinguished service was recognized through award of the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, Airborne Ranger Wings and a host of campaign and battle service medals. Recently, the Secretary of the Army identified him for special recognition in the U.S. Senate and acknowledged him for his indelible mark on the Army and is history as a leader. The consummate entrepreneur, Mr. Davis, was involved in a number of service businesses that provided jobs to thousands of people over nearly thirty years. UNIBAR Maintenance Services/ ACCU-READ Services in the Ann Arbor, MI based company that he founded in 1985 that has over 550 employees is reknown as the quality leader in the building services and utility support contracting industries. He was the first African-American President of a major industry trade association, the Building Services Contractor Association, International (BSCAI) where he actively participated for twenty-seven years, and the longest servicing director at the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, G. Jean Davis; two daughters, Jerry Ann Fraizer and Amelia Rosenberg; a son, Robert S. Davis and a sister, Lillian Williamson of Columbus,Ohio and a host of grand children; great-grandchildren; nephews; nieces and other relatives. Funeral Services will be held in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, November 23, 1999, 12:30 p.m. at Riverside Baptist Church located at 7th Street and Maine Avenue S.W., Washington D.C. Interment is scheduled for Arlington National cemetery at 3 p.m. with full military honors. Cryer, William P., Northfield Twp., MI

Died Thursday, November 18, 1999. Born March 30, 1929. Survived by wife, Vivadean Cryer; five sons; and several grandchildren. Funeral services 2 p.m. Tuesday November 22, 1999 at the NIE FUNERAL HOME, 2400 Carpenter Rd, where the family will receive friends noon until time of service.

Lawton, Lillian H., Ann Arbor, MI

Age 87, passed away November 17, 1999 in Ann Arbor. She was born June 5, 1912 in Grand Rapids, MI, the third of six daughters of Georgia and Fred Hart. All of her sisters preceded her in death. On February 10, 1946, she married Walter G. Lawton in Alexandria, VA. She and her husband lived for many years in Livonia, MI retiring to Base Lake in Washtenaw County in 1973. Her husband preceded her in death on November 10, 1987. Afterwards she moved to Ann Arbor in 1989. She is survived by daughter; Marguerite Wolkwitz, whose husband Randall Wolkwitz passed away in 1994; grandchildren Michael, Amy, and Kari Wolkwitz; daughter Jean Lawton; and son-in-law James Ellis. She was a retired teacher with a life long love of a variety of artistic endeavors including oil and acrylic painting, ceramics, metalworking, and jewelry making. She was also an avid gardener with a special love for roses and irises. She developed a number of her own irises, naming them after family and friends. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Michigan Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-0489.
