Leslie, Mrs. Jane E. Hackbarth, Indianapolis, IN

Age 49, died Wednesday, November 18, 1999. She was an Ann Arbor native and the daughter of Paul Hackbarth of Johnson City and the late Lillian Smith Hackbarth. She received her bachelors and masters degrees from Indiana University. She worked 15 years as antique/artifact collections manager for Conner Prairie. She was a member of the Alpha Omicron Pisorority and Tabernacle Presbyterian Church. Surviving are her husband, Thomas H. Leslie; one son, John Paul Leslie of Indianapolis; her paternal grandmother, Katherine Doran Hackbarth of Ann Arbor, MI; her step mother, Jean Hackbarth of Johnson City; and four step brothers, Michael, Keith, Ronald, and Madison Allen. Jenkins, Evelyn Shirley (Lyn), A Memorial Service for Mrs. Jenkins

will be held on Saturday, December 11, 1999 at 2 p.m. at the Ann Arbor Unitarian Universalist Church, 4001 Ann Arbor-Saline Road. Mrs. Jenkins, a long time Ann Arbor resident was born on December 14, 1924 and died on November 24, 1999. She is survived by her husband of forty-six years, Phil F. Jenkins; a daughter, Lee Ann Tracy; a son, Richard Scott Slee; and her many grandchildren. She loved quiet times, birds on her windowsill and singing. She will be dearly missed by all who loved her. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

McDaniel, Vane D., Ann Arbor, MI

Age 82, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, December 3, 1999 at Whitehall Nursing Home. Born August 3, 1917 in Manton, MI to George and Mary McDaniel, he worked many jobs before serving with the 386 Bomber Group, stationed in England, France, and Belgium during WWII, with the Army-Air Force. On April 18, 1946 he married Ella Hedlund in Manton, MI, she preceded him in death in 1995. He was employed by GM at the Hydromatic Plant for 30 years before retiring in 1983, and was a member of Local 735. Vane was a longtime member of Huron Hills Baptist Church, which he helped co-found. For many years he served as a Sunday school superintendent and teacher, treasurer, deacon, and lay minister. Mr. McDaniel was an avid sports fan and enjoyed University of Michigan sports. Survived by his daughters; Carol McDaniel and Heather (Bill) Wright, both of Ann Arbor; two brothers, Glenn (Thersal) McDaniel of Frankenmuth, MI, and Robert (Mildred) McDaniel of Manton, MI; two sisters, Maude Taylor of Manton, MI and Georgia (Harold) Aldrich of Lainsburg, MI, along with many nieces, nephews and friends. The family will receive friends 2-4 & 6-8 p.m., Sunday, December 5, 1999 at the NIE FUNERAL HOME, 2400 Carpenter Rd. Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m., Monday, December 6, 1999 at Huron Hills Baptist Church, 3150 Glazier Way, Ann Arbor, with Rev. Donald Gerig officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview cemetery. Enderby (Brush), Edna Marian, Dexter, MI

Edna slipped peacefully out of this life on Tuesday, November 30, 1999, at the Arbor Hospice Residence with loving family members by her side. Edna was born in Malden Township, Ontario, Canada on October 12, 1907. She was one of five daughters and two sons born to Charles and Theresa Brush. She had fond memories of her life on their farm. After graduation from London Normal School, Edna married Marvyn Enderby (who died in 1972). They moved to the United States and eventually settled in Detroit where they raised four children. Edna completed a bachelor's degree at the University of Detroit while teaching at Gesu and St. Monica Elementary Schools. Family members cherish the memories of her strong, private, loving, sweet, witty and bright presence in their lives. The children are B. Lynn and his wife Mary Joyce Enderby of Spartanburg, South Carolina; and their children and spouses, David and Jill Enderby, Beth and Larry Westfall, Peg and Len Garrison, Nancy Enderby and Jon Watson; also Marv and Edna's daughter, Anne and her husband Dave Harrell of Ann Arbor; Dave's daughters and spouses, Cathy and Dan Kersh, Vikki and Bill Jouney; Marv and Edna's middle son, Chuck and his wife Carolyn of Howell; their children, Matthew and Christine; Marv and Edna's youngest son, Don of Carpinteria, California and his daughters, Rebecca and Katherine; five great-grandsons, one expected great-granddaughter; and three step-great grandsons. Other living relatives are a sister, Luella Olscamp of Toronto, Ontario; a brother, Roger and his wife Marcella of Fort St. John, British Columbia; and a sister-in-law, Idamae Enderby of San Angelo, Texas; many nieces and nephews, and friends. At Edna's request, cremation has taken place; a memorial gathering and celebration of her life will be held at a later date. The family suggests donations to the Seniors Program at Generations Together, 2801 Baker Rd. Dexter, MI 48130 or Arbor Hospice Residence, 2366 Oak Valley Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48103. Lewis, Ethel Lucille, Shelby Township, MI

Formerly of Chelsea, MIAge 77, died December 3, 1999 in her daughter's home. Survivors include five children, Troy Lewis, Fred Lewis Jr., Gene Lewis, Stella Simons, and Martha Behnke. Services will be Sunday, December 5, 1 p.m. at COLE FUNERAL CHAPEL, Chelsea, with visitation Sunday 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Argersinger, Edward Miller, Sarasota, FL

(Formerly of Ann Arbor, MI)
Edward Miller Argersinger died peacefully on December 2, 1999. He was born April 19, 1912 in Seattle, Washington. He was the son of Edward and Vera Argersinger. He graduated in 1934 from the University of Washington in civil engineering and was active with UW's crew team. He moved to Ann Arbor in 1950 until 1997. His wife, Amelia, preceded him in death on October 2, 1995. Mr. Argersinger was a life member of Barton Hills Country Club and an avid golfer. He is survived by his loving children, Katherine (Hal) Grant of Sarasota, FL, Edward S. (Linda) Argersinger of West Palm Beach, FL, Pamela (Zeke) Ziegel of Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ, Wilbur (Chris) Argersinger and Charles (Laura) Argersinger, both of Ann Arbor; 12 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren; and devoted friend, Carol Moody of Ann Arbor. A private family service will be held in Seattle, Washington on Friday, December 10, 1999. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ann Arbor Area Foundation, 201 S. Main, Ann Arbor, MI 48104.

Johnson, Chandious Sr., Sumpter Township, MI

(Formerly of Speight, KY)
Age 71. Mr. Johnson passed away on Friday, December 3,1999 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Superior Township. Mr. Johnson was born April 14, 1928 in Speight, KY, the son of the late Cecil Henry and Maggie (Quillen) Johnson. He attended Virgie High School. He worked at Sheldon Road Ford Motor Company Plant in Plymouth for 37 years until his retirement. He also served in the United States Army for over 71/2 years with tours of duty in England and Germany. He was a member of the Church of Christ Church on Elwell Road in Belleville. He is survived by his son, Chandious Johnson Jr of Belleville; his four daughters, Jennifer (Jerry) Lowhorn of Belleville, Pamela (Dennis) Stewart of Belleville, Elizabeth (Mitchell) Breeding of Detroit and Jill (Mark) Atchley of Romulus; three brothers, Silas Johnson of Bidwell, OH, Willis Johnson of Jackson, OH and Jerry Johnson of Galion, OH; three sisters Florine Madden of Whitesburg, KY, Avonell Dunn & Mary Jane McGurie, both of Ewington, OH; and ten grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Jean in 1996, his step-mother, Helen (Chapman) Johnson and his sister, Bernice Anderson of KY. In-State at DAVID C. BROWN FUNERAL HOME 460 E. Huron River Dr., Belleville, MI where friends may call on Monday from 12-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday December 7, 1999 at the funeral home with the Evangelist Vance H. Cobb, officiating. Interment will be in the Hillside cemetery, Belleville, MI.

Downen, Harriet Marilyn, Ann Arbor, MI

Age 52, died suddenly on Friday,December 3, 1999 at her home. She was born May 10, 1947 in Rochester, NY, daughter of Samuel and Freeda (Soblowsky) Weisenberg. On July 7, 1978 she was married to Gary Downen in Ann Arbor. Mrs. Downen received her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin and her graduate degree from the University of Michigan School of Social Work. She was working in the Lenawee Intermediate School District as an elementary school social worker. Survivors include her husband Gary; sister, Elaine Weisenberg of New York, NY; mother-in-law, Maxine Downen of Farmington Hills, MI;her sister-in-law, Linda Bauer of Farmington, MI; and her brother-in-law, Daryl Downen of Ft. Mill, SC. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the NIE FUNERAL HOME, 2400 Carpenter Rd. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 8, 1999 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Forest Hill cemetery.

Barera, Gladys Marie Starr, Ann Arbor, MI

Died December 4, 1999, at the age of 86, following a short illness. She was born on February 17, 1913, in Cedar Springs, Michigan to Henry and Anna Marie (Peterson) Starr. Following graduation from Western Michigan University in 1938, she taught for many years in the Tecumseh, Detroit, and Ann Arbor Public School systems. She subsequently earned an M.A.in Education from the University of Michigan in 1968. She was married in Grand Rapids, Michigan on August 10, 1942 to Lawrence Anthony Barera, who preceded her in death February 17, 1995. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, David and Monika and her beloved grandsons, Michael Anthony and Matthew Charles, all of Ann Arbor; sisters, Alma Wolven and Althea Luyk, both of Grand Rapids;numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles, Joel, Robert and James Burdette Starr; and by one sister, Lucille Hunting. She was an active member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, the Ann Arbor Women's City Club and American Association of University Women, as well as a supporter of numerous religious, civic, educational organizations. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 8, 1999 at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 2250 E. Stadium Blvd, Ann Arbor, with Fr. Jim McDougall, Pastor, presiding. Burial will follow at the Washtenong Memorial cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Muehlig Chapel on Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m., with a Scripture Service to take place at 7:45 p.m. Visitation will also be held at St. Francis Church on Wednesday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mrs. Barera may be made to St. Francis of Assisi Educational Trust Fund, 2150 Frieze Avenue, Ann Arbor or Arbor Hospice, 2366 Oak Valley Drive, Ann Arbor.

Donahue, Dorothy A., Salem Twp., MI

Age 68, died Thursday at West Trail Nursing Center in Plymouth. Dorothy was born in Ann Arbor on August 30, 1931, the daughter of Harold and Doris Brown McCrumb. In 1962,she married Robert Donahue and he survives. Other survivors include her cousin, Barbara (Ralph) LaParl of Algonac and the LaParl children, Robert, Deborah, Richard, Wendy and Tracey. She was a licensed practical nurse at St. Joseph and University of Michigan, and later served as a special clerk in the X-ray department at the U of M. She will be missed by her friends in Traverse City, MI and in Dade City, FL. Dorothy and Robert enjoyed their Airstream Trailering. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 7, 1999 at 11 a.m. at the MUEHLIG CHAPEL. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 on Monday at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in Bethlehem cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association.

Bryant, William E., Pinckney, MI

Age 87, died December 5, 1999 in Tawas City after a brief illness. Bill was born in Detroit on November 16, 1912, the son of the late William and Florence (Boacks) Bryant. Bill is survived by his sons, William (Susan) Bryant of Oscoda and Dennis Bryant of Howell; his brother, Wilson Bryant of Florida; his grandchildren, Sherry, Tamara, Kimberly, Tom, Jill, Cissie, Savannah and Shaunah; his great-grandchildren, Tanya, Tennille, Nicole, Kevin, Andrea, Tanisea, Brett, Kameron, Mitchell, Jeremy, Zoe, and Azaylya; and great-great-grandson, Devon. Bill operated Grandal Market in Redford Township for many years. He was an active and charter member of Hamburg Senior Center. He served on the Senior Center Building Project. He was a member of the Hamburg Parks and Recreation Board, and was active in the United Way. Visitation Tuesday 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 8 at the BELL-BOREK FUNERAL HOME, Hamburg with Rev. Carl F. Welser.

Costabile, Jane Ethel, Ann Arbor, MI

Age 86, passed away on Tuesday, November 23, 1999 at Glacier Hills Nursing Center. She was born Jane Ethel Wright on December 13, 1912 in Wyandotte, MI, daughter of Samuel B. and Clara Wright. She received her BA degree from Alma College in 1938 and later an MA from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, IL. On March 19, 1943 she was married to Dominick Costabile who was killed in action on September 17, 1944 during WWII. She received her MSW degree in 1950 from the University of Pittsburgh and taught group work supervision at Wayne State University from 1955-56. She served as Planning Consultant for the United Community Services of Metropolitan Detroit for several years. In 1962, Jane was appointed to the faculty of University of Michigan in the School of Social Work to participate in a demonstration and training project in group work with parents. She was promoted to assistant professor in 1963 and associate professor in 1968. Jane was subsequently appointed Director of the Admissions Office of the School. She retired Professor Emeritus of Social Work in 1979. In addition to her substantial contributions to the educational programs of the School of Social Work, Jane established a distinguished record of service to state organizations, including the Michigan Youth Commission, the Advisory Committee on Children and Youth, and the Michigan Department of Social Services Placement Services Advisory Committee. While serving on the latter committee, Jane contributed significantly to the rewriting of the Adoption Code of 1975 and to the establishment of policies providing for subsidized adoptions, making Michigan one of the pioneers in this area. Jane was also an active member of many community organizations including Catholic Social Services (Board of Directors 1977-1988, Secretary 1981-1982, President 1983-1984), Literacy Council of Washtenaw County, Lurie Terrace and Glacier Hills Residents Association. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Survivors include one brother, Charles Wright and wife, Rita, of Wyandotte, MI; one niece, Barbara J. Wright and one nephew, William Wright, both of Jackson, MI. One brother, Samuel Wright, predeceased her. Memorial contributions may be made to Alma College, United Way of Washtenaw County, University of Michigan School of Social Work.
