Age 84, died Saturday, February 11, 2000 in Columbia, KY. He was born on June 4, 1915 in Columbia, KY, the son of Silas and Nancy Caroline (Taylor) Cundiff. In 1938 he moved to Ann Arbor where he met his wife, Helen Mae Richards, whom he married in 1939. Mr. Cundiff had worked as a carpenter and was a member of Local #502. Survivors include his five sons, Richard (Margaret) Cundiff of Plymouth, MI, Ronald (Frances) Cundiff and Philip (Dana) Cundiff, both of Saline, MI, Robert (Charlotte) Cundiff of Adrian, MI, and Wesley (Claudia) Cundiff of Grass Lake, MI; twelve grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; and his best friend, Helen Severance of Ann Arbor. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Mae Cundiff in 1988; his parents, Silas and Nancy Cundiff; son, Marvin Cundiff; and two brothers, Deward Cundiff and Norman Cundiff. Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to Lurie Terrace, 600 West Huron, Ann Arbor, MI 48103.Envelopes are available at the NIE FUNERAL HOME, 2400 Carpenter, where the family will receive friends 4-8 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, February 17, 2000 at the funeral home with Rev. Charles Stanley officiating. Burial will follow at Washtenong Memorial Park.

Hope, Ada Myrtle, (Formerly of Detroit)

Age 95, passed away February 14, 2000 at Martin Luther Memorial Home. She married Floyd R. Hope in Detroit on November 24, 1926. Ada moved to South Lyon in 1936. She was a kitchen supervisor for the South Lyon School District until she retired in 1988. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of South Lyon. Ada was the loving mother of Norbert (Edna Ardella) Hope of South Lyon, Betty (Bill) Amrhein of Brighton and Harold (Katrina) Hope of South Lyon. She is also survived by three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and two brothers. She was preceded in death by her husband Floyd in 1981; two grandchildren; two sisters and five brothers. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of South Lyon with Rev. Robert Beddingfield officiating. Interment will follow at South Lyon cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, 60820 Marjorie Ann St.,South Lyon, MI 48178.

Green, Sophie, Tavares, FL

(Formerly of Ypsilanti, MI)
Age 81, passed away Saturday, February 12, 2000 in Florida. She was born July 24, 1918 in Detroit, MI, the daughter of Joseph and Catherine (Osochowski) Makar. On December 14, 1940, she married James Green and he survives. Mrs. Green had been a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She had been employed by Eastern Michigan University before moving to Florida in 1976. She was then employed by Social Services of Lake County, FL. In addition to her husband, survivors include four sons, Russell (Dianne) of Longwood, FL, James (Dorothy) of Escondido, CA, Charles (Annetta) of Longwood, FL, John of Ypsilanti; one daughter, Barbara (Marvin) Boprie of Ypsilanti; and 12 grandchildren, Nanette (Eric) Myers, Michelle Seals, Nicole (Lee) Evans, and Alexander, Jennifer, Thomas, Zachary, Andy, Eric, Heather, Kate and Molly Green, She was preceded in death by one son, Robert, two brothers, Nick and John Makar and one sister, Anne Bukowski. The funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Friday, February 18, 2000 at Transfiguration Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. David Franco O.S.F.S. celebrant. Burial will follow in St. John cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Washtenaw. Envelopes are available at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel where the family will receive friends 4-9 p.m. Thursday and at the church from 9 a.m. until time of mass Friday.

Grinstaff, Mary Inez Haynes,

A long time resident of Ann Arbor, MI died February 14, 2000 in Campbell, MO at the age of 94 years. She was born on January 25, 1906 in Brook, Indiana the daughter of W. J. and Lillie (Burton) Haynes. She married William P. Grindstaff on October 27, 1932 in Bethany Church in Campbell, MO. She is survived by her husband; four children; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Bethany cemetery, in Campbell, MO. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Ann Arbor, MI.

Sweet, Maxwell G, Ann Arbor, MI

(Formerly of Chelsea)
Died Sunday morning, February 13, 2000 at Hillside Terrace Retirement Residence in Ann Arbor after a long bout with Parkinson's disease. Max was born April 11, 1913, the son of the late Glenn and Ethel (Mosure) Sweet in Carsonville, MI. Max served as a Captain in the US Army Infantry in World War II and was decorated with the Purple Heart and received two bronze battle stars. He received his MBA from the University of Michigan in 1948 and went on to a successful career as a C.P.A., retiring from Giffles Associates in Southfield in 1978. In the middle fifties he served as mayor of Chelsea. Mr. Sweet was a former chair of Washtenaw Chapter of the American Red Cross and was member of First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor. His life was characterized by devotion to his family and service to his community. Those who love and will miss him include his wife of 58 years, Shirley (nee Payne); daughter, Rebecca Glenn Sweet and her husband, Roland Loup and her daughter, Summer Alexis Sweet; son, William Mosure Sweet; son, Robert Elam Sweet and his wife Burgunda Volger Sweet and their children, Alexander Benedict Sweet, Aaron Maxwell Sweet, and Nicholas William Sweet, all of Ann Arbor; his brother, Burton Jack Sweet of Sandusky, MI; numerous other relatives, neighbors, friends and business associates. His brothers, Allan and William Melford Sweet preceded him in death. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, February, 16 at First United Methodist Church, Chelsea with Rev. Richard E. Dake and Rev. David Krehbiel officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, Chelsea and at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until hour of service. Brewer, Elizabeth Florence, Ann Arbor, MI

Age 92, died Sunday, February 13, 2000 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. Elizabeth was born February 17, 1907 in Blue Island, IL to Alfred Brouette and Leda Gilmette Brouette, the youngest and last of eleven brothers and sisters. She is preceded in death by her first husband of 36 years Eugene Doherty in 1961 and her second husband of 22 years James Brewer in 1989. Elizabeth retired after 10 years from the University of Michigan, Michigan Union as a Telephone Operator. Elizabeth is survived by her sons, Dan (Margaret) Doherty of Plymouth, MI., Mike (Catherine) Doherty of Oregon City, Oregon; and daughter, Mary Jane (Kip) Eisele of Dexter, MI. She is also survived by five grandsons; three granddaughters; and six great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A private family service will be held at Holy Sepulchre cemetery. Ross, Kay, Ann Arbor, MI

Age 57, passed away February 18, 2000. She was born on May 7, 1942 in Marquette, MI, where she resided until her early twenties. At that time, she moved to Ann Arbor and met her husband, Gary Ross. She will always be remembered by her beautiful smile, tender heart and inner strength. Not only will she be missed by her many friends, she is survived by her son, David C. Ross and his future bride, Barbara Waddington, and her son, Chris Esteves; mother-in-law, Kathleen A. Ross; sister-in-law, Bonnie Ross. Visitation will be 10a.m.-1p.m., Tuesday, February 22, 2000 at the NIE FUNERAL HOME, 2400 Carpenter Rd., with funeral services beginning at 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Forest Hill cemetery. Price, Velma L. (Val), Ypsilanti, MI

Age 76. Velma passed away surrounded in love by her family at her daughter's home with the support of Hospice of Washtenaw on Thursday, February 17, 2000. She was born on March 9, 1923 in AK to the late Lola and John Payne. She was a homemaker for many years until the late 1950s when she began working various jobs, including 20 years at the K-Mart on Washtenaw from which she retired in 1998 due to ill health. She was active at the Ypsilanti Community Center and a member of the Ypsilanti Church of Christ. She married Lee Price on October 12, 1942. To this union was blessed four daughters, Janet (Dan) Cooley of Chelsea, Carol (John) Manners of Fenton, Margie (Jim) Smith of Chelsea, Cathy (Stan Walling) of Ypsilanti; seven grandchildren, Diana (Joe) Branham, David (Karen) Cooley, Ronnie (Judy) Dunn, Jennifer (Brian Becker) Ceccacci, Mary, Johnny and Elizabeth Manners; five great-grandchildren, Erin Cooley, Garret and Lynnae Branham, Summer and Jack Dunn. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Luther and Orville; and one sister, Lorene Evens. She is survived by two brothers, Julius and Jimmy; and two sisters, Vida Turley and Louise Stephens of MO. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements by Janowiak Funeral Home. Memorial Service will be held at the Ypsilanti Church of Christ, 1070 E. Cross St. on Tuesday February 22, at 11a.m. Gary L. Vaught minister officiating. Dinner following service with a private burial at Washtenong Memorial Park. Memorial gifts can be made to the Ypsilanti Church of Christ.

Adams, Neda Jo., Pittsfield Twp., MI

Age 55, passed away at her home,with her family at her side, Saturday, February 19, 2000 after an extensive battle with cancer. She was born on August 8, 1944 in Washington, GA,the daughter of William Taft and Lela (Davenport) Davis and had been a lifelong area resident. Rev. Ray DeLong, Pastor of the Belleville Church of God, where she was a member, once told her companion of 23 years, Randy Varney, that Neda was a precious angel that graced God's Church, at which he would always be forever grateful. She is survived by Randy; four children, Ronald Thomas Weeks of Pittsfield Twp., Tammy (Richard) Mink of Milan, Christopher Wade Weeks of Ann Arbor, Landon Varney of Pittsfield Twp., six grandchildren; her parents, William and Lela Davis; four sisters; one brother; several nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives. Memorials should be directed to the family. Envelopes are available at the NIE FUNERAL HOME, 2400 Carpenter Rd, where the family will receive friends 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, February 22, 2000. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 23, 2000 at the funeral home, with Rev. DeLong officiating. Burial will follow at Stoney Creek cemetery.

Lewis, Clark D. Jr., Manchester, MI

Age 77, died Sunday, February 20, 2000 at Arbor Hospice. He was born a twin in Jackson, MI on May 3, 1922,the son of Clark and Mildred (Fletcher) Lewis. Following high school, he attended and graduated from the University of Michigan. On May 1, 1945 he was commissioned as a Navy pilot at Pensacola, FL and married Elizabeth Staebler, whom he met in Ann Arbor while attending the U of M, the same day. Clark was a Veteran Navy pilot serving in WWII and the Korean conflict. During his Navy career he obtained additional schooling in both Naval Law and Air Intelligence. His assignments were numerous, including a tour duty aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Shangri-LaCVA-38, where he was the Air Intelligence Officer. Clark and Elizabeth returned to Ann Arbor following his military service where he was active in the community and the local post #46 of the American Legion, serving as commander of the post and also County Commander. Clark retired in 1982 last working at Ervin Industries in Ann Arbor. Most recently they relocated to Manchester after living in upper Michigan since retiring in 1982. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Elizabeth (Staebler) Lewis; two sons, Todd (Janis) Lewis of Manchester, Steve (Evie) Lewis of Brighton; his twin brother, Fletcher (Mable) of Jackson; four grandchildren, Devon and Phillip Lewis, Julie Lewis McGahey and Amy Lewis; one step-grandson, David Haight, and nephew, Spencer Lewis. A graveside service took place at the Bethlehem cemetery in Ann Arbor. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations sent to the Arbor Hospicein Ann Arbor. Popovic, Milan, Saline, MI

Milan Popovic, 59, proud father of two daughters, Dusica and Dana, grand-father of three, and devoted husband of 35 years to Ljubinka Glisovic, passed away on February 19, 2000 at his home surrounded by family and loved ones following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Miokovic, Yugoslavia on March 14, 1940 to Cedomir and Mira Popovic, the youngest of six children. A very dedicated and loving family man,Milan always made time to help those in need. He blessed those who knew him with his kind heart, endless support and consistent consideration. Milan and his family came to the United States in November of 1968 and moved to Saline in 1973. In August of 1999, he retired as an employee of 30 years from General Motors. Milan's intense passion for landscaping and gardening grew into Saline Evergreen Farms, a tree nursery/landscaping business, which he founded, cared for and loved. Evergreen Farms became responsible for thousands of trees finding their homes throughout the Saline-Ann Arbor area. Milan found immense joy and pride in his passion and saw it as a way to give something back to the community and to nature itself. In addition to his wife Ljubinka, Milan is survived by his daughters, Dusica (David) Roden of Midland, MI and Dana (Christopher) Burkart of Charleston, SC; three beautiful granddaughters, Alexandria, Jenna and Elizabeth Roden. Milan's memory will be kept alive by his family in Yugoslavia: brother, Sretko Popovic; sister, Bogdana Savec; niece, Ljubica Mojsic; sisters-in-law, Vida (Zivko) Radovic and Mica (Paul) Bogi; his nephews, Milan (Cathy) Radovich, Branko and Mirko Vulicevic; and many dear friends. Milan's humor, warm smile and spirit of life will live through us always. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 22 at 10 a.m. from Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home, Saline, with the Rev. Miosav Ghingilovich officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood cemetery in Saline. Friends and family may begin calling on Monday, February 21, 2000 from 3-9 p.m. with a service at 7 p.m. Additional visitation will be scheduled on Tuesday, February 22, 2000 from8 a.m. until the time of service.

Coleman, Sylvester Sr., Ypsilanti, MI

Sylvester Coleman Sr., an Ypsilanti resident since 1934, former employee of Centias Speciality and Ford Motor Co., (Dearborn, MI) entered into rest February 15, 2000. Mr. Coleman was born in Moundsville, AL, May 6, 1915, the fourth child of Eddie Coleman and Willie Roberson Coleman Wilson. He was preceded in death by his parents; his two wives, Carolyn Perdue and Ephemia Davis; four brothers; one sister; and one son. Mr. Coleman was a patriarch to his family, dedicated to Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church, Sr. Usher Board, friends, and especially the Food Harvest program. He also loved people, he could talk on any level, with anyone on any subject. He loved life, period. He leaves to mourn one daughter, Margaret (Herschel) Overstreet (of Ann Arbor, MI); two sons, Sylvester Coleman Jr. (Hazel), of Tuscaloosa, AL, and Sylvester Coleman Jr. (Nettie) of Kenner, LA; four grandchildren, Belinda, Shyvonne, Grother, and Veronica; six great-grandchildren, Christopher, Derek, Ashley, Ronald, Dontay and Edward Joseph. He leaves many cousins, nieces and nephews, and a host ofrelatives throughout this whole world. We, the Roberson family are a melting pot with every nationality. We're unique, which is a great legacy.
