SMITH, Audrey P.

- Of Davison, age 77, died Monday, May 31, 1999 at Genesys Hospice Care Center in Goodrich where she had spent the last month. Funeral Services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, June 4, 1999 at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd., Minister Al Miller officiating. Burial at Sunset Hills cemetery. Mrs. Smith will lie in state at the funeral home where the family will receive visitors from 5-9 p.m. on Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Audrey P. Smith Flint Junior Golf Association Scholarship Fund. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Mrs. Smith was born Audrey Price Adams in Flint on June 27, 1921, the only child of Lilla Mae and Arthur Adams. She began performing song and dance at the age of 13, and after graduation from Central High School enjoyed a career as a singer with Al Arter and Ev Cowan. She also sang and danced with the Four Jacks and a Queen. She married Robert Calvin Smith in 1941. After World War II, the Smith's bought Glendale Hardware on Beecher Road where they became a neighborhood fixture for 13 years. This became the starting point for Mrs. Smith's lifelong involvement in her community. She was active in Mu Delta Service Sorority, the Red Feather Campaign and for many years served as a volunteer at McLaren Hospital. The Smiths moved to Davison in 1968. Mrs. Smith is best known for her 33-year involvement with the Flint Junior Golf Association. Upon her retirement from the organization in 1983, a golf scholarship was established in her name. Last year she was bestowed the Special Service Award by the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame, the only woman to ever receive the honor. The Alumni Association of Flint Central High School Class of 1940 awarded Mrs. Smith their distinguished Alumnus Award for exemplifying the highest ideals of the institution. A tireless advocate for the cause of diabetes, she was named Fundraiser of the Year by the American Diabetes Association (Washington Affiliate) in 1995. Mrs. Smith leaves her husband of 58 years, Bob; two daughters, Sharon Sue (Robert) Snell of St. Louis, MO, Patti Lee Hart of Seattle, WA; four grandchildren, Jeffrey (Julie) Snell of St. Louis, MO and Katherine (Brendan) Snell Shanahan of St. Louis, MO; Alexandra Hart and Andrew Hart of Seattle, WA; great- grandchildren, Emily Snell and Riley Shanahan. She also leaves cherished relatives; sister-in-law and brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Fred Secord, and George Smith; numerous nieces and nephews, and their spouses and children.

STARK, Martha D.

- Of Flint, age 80, died Sunday, May 30, 1999 at Crestmont Nursing Care Center. Funeral service was held at 1PM today.

STRUDGEON, Elsie E.

- Age 94, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999 at Kith Haven, Inc. A memorial service will be held 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, 1999 from the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, Dr. Lawrence W. Kent will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church from 2 p.m. Tuesday until the time of the service. Those desiring may make contributions to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children. Mrs. Strudgeon was born in Coburg, Germany August 10, 1907 and came to Saginaw, Michigan at the age of six, and moved to the Flint area in 1942. She was a member of Au Gres Garden Club and the Eastern Star. She is survived by: 2 sons, Donald C. Strudgeon and wife Norma of Au Gres, MI, Walter J. Strudgeon and wife Ann of Mears, MI; daughter, Dorothy Gale and husband Richard of Flint; 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sister- in-law, Ruth Gelhar; 2 brothers-in- law, David Jermann and Wayne Coddington. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter in 1989; 2 brothers, Albert and Howard; 3 sisters, Alma, Bertha and Dorothy.

THOMAS, Mr. Calvin Earl

- Age 72, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999 at his residence. Funeral service 1PM Saturday, June 5, 1999 from the Greater Emmanuel Temple Apostolic Church, 1117 E. Genesee. Dist. Eld. Charles Byrd officiating. Interment River Rest cemetery, G- 4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 12:30PM Saturday. Mr. Thomas will lie in state in the Chapel of the Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed after 12Noon Friday, where the family will receive friends from 6-7PM Friday evening.

THORNTHWAITE, Elizabeth (Betty)

- Age 80, died Monday, May 31, 1999. Funeral Mass will be held 11AM Friday, June 4, 1999 from St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Davison, Rev. Fr. Andrew Czajkowksi will officiate. Cremation will follow. The family will receive friends from 6-9PM at the church. Parish Rosary will be prayed at St. John Church 7PM Thursday. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Alzheimers Association.

BADALA, Sarah

Age 95, of Mt. Morris, died Monday, July 13, 1998 at the Clio Convalescent Center. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 16, 1998 at 11AM from the Miles Martin Funeral Home in Mt. Morris. Burial in Assyrian cemetery. Friends may call after 6PM Tuesday, all day Wednesday, and on Thursday from 9AM until the time of service. Mrs. Badala was born May, 23, 1903 in Flint, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis and Ella (Scott) Dorman. She and "Sam" Israel Badala were united in marriage October 20, 1921. He preceded her in death February 22, 1983. Sarah taught herself to cook and crochet, which she was very good at doing and enjoyed both. She survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Preceded in death by her parents, husband, 7 sisters, and 2 brothers.

CHEVALIER, May F.

- Of Flint, age 88, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999 at her residence. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11AM Friday, June 4, 1999 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 1227 East Bristol Road in Burton, Father Gary L. McGinnis officiating. Burial in Meadowview Memorial Gardens in Davison. Those desiring may make contributions to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association. Visitation 12Noon- 9PM Thursday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road. A rosary will be prayed at 7PM Thursday at the funeral home. Mrs. Chevalier was born in Pequaming, Michigan on August 19, 1910 and was a resident of Flint for over 50 years. Surviving are her daughter, Carole Miller of Flint; 2 sons, Ronald and wife Evelyn of Burton, Richard and wife Carol of Flint; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, John Borgen of Florida, Robert and wife Evelyn Borgen of Wisconsin; sister, Hannah Gerard of Gladstone, Michigan; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Chevalier, in 1988; special family friends, Katherine LaVanway and Irene Morgan.

TRAVER, Richard

- Age 65, of Columbiaville, died Wednesday, June 2, 1999, at home with his family. He was born November 4, 1933 in lapeer County, son of Burton and Nellie (Seames) Traver. He married Margaret Taylor on December 25, 1953 at the Monroe Street Methodist Church in Lapeer. Dick was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, and was a retired automobile dealer. he had served for 33 years as a Columbiaville Fireman, and had been on the Lapeer County Board of Commissioners for 6 years, and served for 12 years on the Lakeville School Board. Surviving are his wife, Margaret; son, Richard and wife Susan Traver of Columbiaville; daughter, Susan and husband Jeff LaDuke of Columbiaville; 3 grandchildren, Amy, Jamie, and J.J.; brother, James and wife Budwea Traver of Rotunda West, Florida; sister, Jan and husband Michael Carter of Lapeer. Memorial contributions may be given to St. Paul Lutheran School, the McLaren Hospice or the Marathon Twp 1st Responders. Friends may visit the Baird-Newton Funeral Home in Columbiaville on Thursday from 10 am-until 9 pm. Funeral service will be held Friday, June 4 at 11 am from the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lapeer, Pastor John C. Kaiser will officate with burial in Woodlawn cemetery, Columbiaville.

VAUGHAN, Duane M.

- Of Fenton, age 53, died Monday, May 31, 1999 at Genesys Hospice Center, Goodrich. Memorial service will be held 11AM Friday, June 4, 1999 at First Presbyterian Church in Fenton. Rev. Dale Swihart officiating. Family will receive visitors from 1-4 and 6- 9PM Thursday, June 3 at Groves Chapel, Hansen Funeral Home, 421 N. Main St., Davison. Duane was born in Flint, MI March 29, 1946, the son of A.C.L (Joe) and Dorothy (Bruette) Vaughan. He resided in the Flint and Fenton area most of his life, living in Fenton the last 26 years. Duane was joined in marriage to Valorie Morcom at Parkland Presbyterian Church August 21, 1967. He was a member of the Fenton First Presbyterian Church. Duane was a semi-driver and worked for automotive component carriers, and was a member of the UAW Local 659 where he was a joint council delegate and served on the Searchlight Staff. Surviving are: wife, Valorie; son, Matthew Vaughan; daughters, Julie and husband Jeff Lambitz, Heather and fiancee Chad Felts; mother, Dorothy Vaughan; grandchildren: "Grandpa's Boys" Ethan and Brett Lambitz, "Grandpa's Baby" Hanna Felts; mother-in-law: Joan Morcom; sister, Denise Sanchez; sisters and brothers-in-law: Kathy and Joe Belill and Becky and Mel Goldstein; nieces, Ryann Belill, Holly Belill and Alison Goldstein; nephews: Tony and Michael Sanchez, Michael and Tyler Goldstein. Duane was preceded in death by his father, A.C.L Vaughan; and father-in-law, Richard Morcom. He is sadly missed and will remain forever in our hearts. The family thanks God for all of our supportive friends and relatives, especially Dr. Williams Sheppard, the entire staff from Genesys Hospice, Flint Metal Center and ACC. Those desiring, may make contributions in Duane's name to Fenton First Presbyterian Church or Genesys Hospice Center, Goodrich.

GULA, Sally

Age 94, died Tuesday, July 14, 1998 at Hartland Fostrian Manor. Friends may call from 12-9PM Thursday at the funeral home. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

ZENDLER, Philip A. Of Swartz Creek,

age 89, died at McLaren Regional Medical Center on Monday, July 13, 1998. Mr. Zendler, a lifetime resident of the Flint area, was born on May 17, 1909 in New Lothrop. He had been employed at Buick Motor Division, retiring from supervision after 43 years of service. Mr. Zendler attended Calvary Community Church and was a member of the G.M. Retirees Club. Mr. Zendler enjoyed hunting and the out of doors. He is survived by his loving wife, Minnie; one son, Robert J. Zendler, Sr. and wife Sally of Flint; also surviving are: 2 grandsons, Dr. Robert J. Zendler II and wife Melissa of Flint, Dr. John W. Zendler and wife Debora of Jackson Hole, Wyoming; four great-grandsons, R. J. Zendler III, Nicholas Zendler, Brent Zendler and Andrew Zendler; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11AM Thursday, July 16, 1998 from the Brown Funeral Home, Hill Rd. Chapel, 1480 E. Hill Rd., Rev. Dr. Alan LaRose will officiate and burial will follow in Flint Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10AM to 2PM and 6 to 9PM today and Thursday from 9AM to service time.

BENJAMIN, Oliver J.

Age 91, died Monday, July 13, 1998 at Johnson Center, Falcons Landing Sterling, VA. Funeral services will be held 3PM Thursday, July 16, 1998 from the Floral Chapel of Dodds-Dumanois Funeral Home, Rev. Lloyd G. Brasure officiating. Burial in Sunset Hills cemetery. Mr. Benjamin will remain at the funeral home where friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8PM on Wednesday.

WOODRUFF, Charles

- Age 75, of Flint, died Wednesday, May 26, 1999 at Hurley Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced.

ZOFCHAK, Grace

- Of Rittman, OH, formerly of Flint, age 84, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999 in Ohio. Mrs. Zofchak was born January 8, 1915 in Sowerby, England, the daughter of John and Frances Beck and moved to Flint as a young girl. She was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church and a member of the Altar Guild. She also attended St. Elizabeth Episcopal Church in Higgins Lake. Grace was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader. Her family, flowers, and books were her passion. On October 5, 1940, Grace Beck married John Zofchak and he survives her; also surviving her are: daughters, Cathy Fairbanks, Frances Zook, Nancy Thomas; 4 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren. Grace's family would like to give special thanks to Caregivers, Anna Sheppard and Muriel Watts. Funeral services were held today at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Fr. Jay Gantz officiated. Burial will be at Oakwood cemetery, Higgins Lake. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association, 1250 Hylan Blvd., Suite 4B, Staten Island, NY 10305.

CARSON, Roberta Marie (Bert)

- Age 77, died Monday, May 31, 1999 at Genesys Health Park. Visitation will be on Thursday, June 3, 1999 from 12- 8PM. Family hour at 10:30AM on Friday, June 4, 1999 at Holbrook Ave. Church of God, 1034 E. Holbrook Ave., with the funeral at 11AM, Pastor Leo Robinson officiating. Interment at River Rest cemetery, G- 4413 Flushing Rd. Mrs. Carson was born on April 1, 1922, in Detroit, MI, to Robert and Josie (Davis) Payton and was a member of Holbrook Ave. Church of God. She leaves to cherish her memory: sister, Josie Williams of Flint; nieces and nephew, Ona Kay (Wayne) Goza, Charlene Pringle, and Marvin (Yvonne) Mabry, all of Flint; great-nieces and nephews, Maegan-Charjoi Pringle, Zachary Mabry, and Clayton Goza of Flint, Karina "Kai Kai" Wiley of Youngstown, OH, and Marvin (Erna) Mabry, II of Ludenberg, Germany; cousins, Sylvia Carter of Chula Vista, CA, Houston McKell of Detroit, MI and the Calloways of Cape May, NJ; and a host of family and friends including special friends, Bernard Alexander, Florence (Eddie) Garland, Celie Mae (George) McClain, Ann Metcalf, Barb Walker and her loving and caring church family. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Carson; parents, Roberta and Josie Payton; sister, Minnie Lee Mabry; "Granny", Minnie Davison; and uncle, Richard Davis. The family wishes to express special thanks to her physician, Dr. Orlando Benedict and The Genesys Health Park staff.
