BOVINE, Mary Ann

- Of Fenton, age 92, died Sunday, June 20, 1999 at Genesys Health Park. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10AM Tuesday, June 22, 1999 at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, 706 Beach Street, Father Frederick Taggart, O.S.A. officiating. Burial in New Calvary Catholic cemetery. Visitation 3-9PM Monday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road. A rosary will be prayed at 7PM Monday at the funeral home. Mrs. Bovine was born in Prince Edward Island, Canada on July 25, 1906 and was a resident of Flint since 1950, having come from Boston. She married Joseph D. Bovine in 1950 at St. Matthew's Catholic Church. She was a former member of St. Matthew's and Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, and currently belonged to Holy Family Catholic Church. She served in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II. She was a graduate of Boston University School of Nursing. Mrs. Bovine was formerly employed by Hurley Medical Center 1950-1953; and was a Registered Nurse at St. Joseph Hospital, where she was head of emergency room and student nurses, until retiring in 1971. Surviving are granddaughter, Sue Anne and husband Ned Jaggi of Fenton; 3 grandsons, Robert A. and wife Cheryl Byrnes of Florida, Dennis and John Bovine of Michigan; 4 great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Beth, Mary and Tony; brother and sister, Joseph MacDonald and Mrs. Ruth MacKenzie, both of Canada; several nieces and nephews.

BELL, Claude Robert

- Of Davison, age 80, died Sunday, June 20, 1999 at Genesys Health Park. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

BANTLE, Leo Max

- Of Flushing, age 75, died Wednesday, June 16, 1999 at U. of M. Hospital, Ann Arbor. Funeral services will be held 11AM Tuesday, June 22, 1999 at Rossell Funeral Home, Pastor Clifford Bira will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Hills cemetery. Visitation will be 11AM to 3PM and 5PM to 9PM today.

ATWELL, Harold L.

- Of Lapeer, age 75, died June 19, 1999. Funeral services will be held 11AM Wednesday, June 23, 1999 at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. Rev. Darwin Allen officiating. Burial in Stiles cemetery. Visitation will be held 5-9PM Monday and 1-9PM Tuesday. Surviving are: wife, Evelyn; daughter, Carol Ann (Michael) Steine of Attica; sons, Larry (Darlene) of Lapeer, Jerry (Helaine) of Lapeer, Don of Davison and Terry (Lynn) of Lapeer; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Stanley Rock of Pontiac; sister, Ethel (Ray) of Pontiac and Florence Floyd of Fenton; many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by: grandson, Jeremy Atwell; brother, Willard Atwell; sister, Edna Hanner, and parents. Mr. Atwell was a skilled tradesman for Buick Motor Division of General Motors, retiring in 1991, where he had many friends. He would drop anything he was doing to help a friend. He ran Harold's Heating. Harold was an avid hunter and fisherman. Mr. Atwell was a recreational pilot who enjoyed airplanes. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. Memorials may be made to Make-A-Wish Foundation, 1669 Hamilton Rd., Ste. 210, Okemos, MI 48864-1809.

ARMSTRONG, Roy

- Of Flint, age 90, died Sunday, June 20, 1999 at Genesys Convalescent Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

BANTLE, Leo Max

- Of Flushing, age 75, died Wednesday, June 16, 1999 at U. of M. Hospital, Ann Arbor. Visitation will be 11AM to 3PM and 5PM to 9PM Monday. Mr. Bantle was born in New York, NY May 12, 1924, the son of Max and Elsie (Raack) Bantle. Mr. Bantle served in the Merchant Marine during WWII in the Atlantic-Pacific-Mediterranean Theater of Operation including the "D" Day invasion of Normandy, France. He had been employed at Buick since 1966 and was a member of U.A.W. Local #599. Surviving are: 2 daughters, Lisa M. and husband Gerry Vargo of Phoenix, AZ, Renee L. and husband Jose Feliciano of Langhorne, PA; 9 grandchildren, Max Vargo, Rachael, Cruz, Leah, Felicia and Nikko Feliciano, Kelly, Kristin and Brian Bantle; daughter-in-law, Judy Bantle of Flint. He was preceded in death by son, Richard (Dick) in December of 1984.

VAN CURA, Helen

- Of Davison, age 87, died Friday, June 18, 1999, at Genesys Convalescent Center. Funeral Services will be held 1PM Tuesday, June 22, 1999 at the Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd. Burial in Meadowview Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Van Cura will lie in state at the funeral home where family will receive visitors from 2-4 and 6-9PM on both Sunday and Monday, and on Tuesday from 12 Noon until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Mrs. Van Cura was born in Bannister, Michigan on June 24, 1912, the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth (Vit) Velat. She resided in the Davison area most of her life. Helen married Joe Van Cura in 1933 in Brown City and he preceded her in death on June 3, 1999. She is survived by: 7 children, Marjorie (Jerry) Boismier of Davison; Joyce Payne of Davison, Helen (Ted) Ebel of Burton, Joseph Van Cura of Columbiaville, Robert (Ann) Van Cura of North Branch, Ron (Julie) Van Cura of Fenton, Karen (Paul) Trainor of Grand Blanc; 23 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 5 brothers, son-in-law, Fred Payne and grandson, Andrew Van Cura.

TURKUC, Margaret

- Of Davison, died Thursday, June 17, 1999 at her residence. The family requested a private funeral service at First Baptist Church Monday, June 21, 1999. Rev. William Noblitt officiating. Burial in Dawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive visitors from 1-4PM Sunday, June 20, 1999 at Groves Chapel, Hansen Funeral Home, 421 N. Main St., Davison. Margaret was born in Monroe, MI October 10, 1927, the daughter of Steve and Eva Bincsik. She was joined in marriage to Gus Turkuc March 10, 1945 in Flint, MI. Surviving are: husband, Gus; daughters, Linda and husband Jim Schadenberg of Otisville, Elizabeth Baron of Davison; sons, John Turkucz of Mt. Morris, Louis A. Turkuc of Otisville; niece, Janice Hoig; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren and other relatives; special friends, Larry and Virginia Johnson of Lake, Michigan and Dan and Lee Stanko of Florida.

TOWNLEY, Russell A.

- Age 78, of Hudson, FL, formerly of Linden, died Thursday, June 10, 1999 at Regional Medical Center at Bayonet Point in Hudson, FL. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 22, 1999 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Linden Chapel, 209 E. Broad St., Linden. Visitation will be held 1 p.m. until the time of service Tuesday. Those desiring may make contributions to the charity of one's choice. Russell was born September 5, 1920 in Bad Axe, MI, the son of Thomas and Pearl (Kerr) Townley. He married Lorraine Bott on September 8, 1945 in Flint. He retired from GM-Truck Assembly Plant, where he was an electrician and was a member of UAW Local #598. Mr. Townley was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving in WWII. Surviving are: wife, Lorraine; 4 sons, Robert and wife Jeannine of Grand Blanc, Thomas and wife Alyse of Paulding, OH, Michael of Flint, Frederick and wife Ellen of Paulding, OH; daughter, Deborah of Fenton; 4 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; sister, Nellie Jean Ranger of Marshall, MI. He was preceded in death by his son, Tim.

SMITH, Mabel G.

- Of Okeechobee, FL, formerly of Byron, age 80, died Friday, June 18, 1999 in Okeechobee, FL. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

COOK, Kathryn D.

- Of Flint, age 92, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, June 1, 1999 at IHS of Michigan at Riverbend. Funeral service was held at 10AM today.

CLUM, Dorothy M.

- Of Davison, age 74, died Friday, June 4, 1999 at Genesys Health Park. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

CHEVALIER, May F.

- Of Flint, age 88, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999 at her residence. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 11AM today.

SMITH, Audrey P.

- Of Davison, age 77, died Monday, May 31, 1999 at Genesys Hospice Care Center in Goodrich where she had spent the last month. Funeral Services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, June 4, 1999 at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd., Minister Al Miller officiating. Burial at Sunset Hills cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Audrey P. Smith Flint Junior Golf Association Scholarship Fund. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Mrs. Smith was born Audrey Price Adams in Flint on June 27, 1921, the only child of Lilla Mae and Arthur Adams. She began performing song and dance at the age of 13, and after graduation from Central High School enjoyed a career as a singer with Al Arter and Ev Cowan. She also sang and danced with the Four Jacks and a Queen. She married Robert Calvin Smith in 1941. After World War II, the Smith's bought Glendale Hardware on Beecher Road where they became a neighborhood fixture for 13 years. This became the starting point for Mrs. Smith's lifelong involvement in her community. She was active in Mu Delta Service Sorority, the Red Feather Campaign and for many years served as a volunteer at McLaren Hospital. The Smiths moved to Davison in 1968. Mrs. Smith is best known for 33-year involvement with the Flint Junior Golf Association. Upon her retirement from the organization in 1983, a golf scholarship was established in her name. Last year she was bestowed the Special Service Award by the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame, the only woman to ever receive the honor. The Alumni Association of Flint Central High School Class of 1940 awarded Mrs. Smith their distinguished Alumnus Award for exemplifying the highest ideals of the institution. A tireless advocate for the cause of diabetes, she was named Fundraiser of the Year by the American Diabetes Association (Washington Affiliate) in 1995. Mrs. Smith leaves her husband of 58 years, Bob; two daughters, Sharon Sue (Robert) Snell of St. Louis, MO, Patti Lee Hart of Seattle, WA; four grandchildren, Jeffrey (Julie) Snell of St. Louis, MO and Katherine (Brendan) Snell Shanahan of St. Louis, MO; Alexandra Hart and Andrew Hart of Seattle, WA; great- grandchildren, Emily Snell and Riley Shanahan. She also leaves cherished relatives; sister and brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Fred Secord, and George Smith; numerous nieces and nephews, and their spouses and children.

WOODRUFF, Charles

- Age 75, of Flint, died Wednesday, May 26, 1999 at Hurley Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced.

WHITMORE, Mrs. Shirley M.

- Age 57, died Wednesday, May 26, 1999 at Genesys Regional Medical Center-Health Park. Family hour 10:30AM Saturday, June 5, 1999 from the Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle, 930 E. Myrtle Ave., with funeral service commencing immediately at 11AM. Dr. A.J. Pointer officiating. Interment Sunset Hills cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:30AM Saturday. Mrs. Whitmore now lies in state in the Chapel of the Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., and may be viewed after 12Noon today.
