Marjorie M. Frey

Saline

Marjorie Frey, age 83, died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006 at the St. Joseph Mercy Saline Hospital.

Marjorie was born May 30, 1922 in Gull Lake, Mich. the daughter of William and Kathryn (England) Weed. On Jan. 27, 1942, she married Robert Herman Frey, who preceded her in death.

Her children, Barbara, Kathi and Robert Jr., nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, and her two brothers, Eugene and George, all survive.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at the Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home of Saline with Michael Frey officiating. Burial took place in Oakwood cemetery of Saline.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Saint Joseph Mercy Saline Hospital.

Jane Eileen Rause

Saline

Jane Eileen Raus was born October 12, 1936 and died February 9, 2006. She was the daughter of Leslie and Margaret (Schlosser) Jordan of Saline. Jane was a loving wife to Edward Raus, and loving mother to her sons, Lee, LaVerne, and Roger. Her sister, Judy Braun, preceded her in death. Surviving Jane are her sisters, Jean and Jo Scruggs, Jerry Taylor, and her brother, Jim Jordan, all residents of Saline. She graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a teaching degree and became a very respected teacher for thirty-nine years in the Manchester School District. She introduced the annual fourth-grade Holland, Michigan trip while teaching there. Many students learned about Holland, Michigan and about the Netherlands on that trip. Her passion in the summertime was working in her flower garden. She, with hesitation, decided to fly on vacations. She found she enjoyed flying and made several trips, most recently to Washington, D.C. last spring. Jane was a warm, friendly person, well liked by her colleagues and dearly loved by her family. She'll be missed. Viewing at the Robison-Bahnmiller funeral home, burial service, and memorial luncheon have already been held.

Hazel (Schroen) Fiegel

Saline

Hazel (Schroen) Fiegel, age 96, passed peacefully away on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006 at the Saline Evangelical Home. She was born on Oct. 4, 1909 in Pittsfield Township, Mich., the daughter of George and Minnie (Eggert) Schroen. Hazel married Enoch G. Fiegel on March 7, 1934 in York Township. They established their farm on Ellsworth Road, Pittsfield Township. Enoch preceded her in death on Oct. 20, 1975. In 1976, Hazel moved to the City of Saline where she remained until Nov. 1, 2005.

Hazel was a long time member of the Ellsworth Road Extension Club, a long time member of Stoney Creek Arbor Gleaner Society, a volunteer at Saline the Evangelical Home, a member of the former First Baptist Saline-Community of Faith, was currently attending St. Paul UCC-Saline. Hazel will greatly be missed by her two children, George E. (Nellie) Fiegel of Tecumseh and Marilyn (Ralph) Anderson of Saline; seven grandchildren, Gina (Richard) Ireland, Debra Ann (Richard) Peterson, Gloria (Mark) Langen, Steven (Helen Spradlin) Losey, Deborah Lou (Ronald) Baker, James (Kathy) Anderson, Sr., and Ted (Sue) Gardner; fourteen great-grandchildren; Jeremy, Robin, Erik, Sara, James, Chris, Nathan, Kortney, Ronnie Paul, Marisa, Rachel, Jenny, Michael, and Tia.; ten great great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is also preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Florence and Bessie and three brothers, Ernest, Walter, and Carl. The family received friends on Feb. 17, 2006 at the Nie Family Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 18 with officiate Rev. Ronald Tipton of Adrian. Burial took place in Oakwood cemetery in Saline. Memorial contributions may be made in Hazel's honor to the Saline Evangelical Home or St. Paul United Church of Christ of Saline.

Eleanor M. (Lobbestael) Johnson

Milan

Eleanor M. (Lobbestael) Johnson, 84, of Milan, Mich. died peacefully on Feb. 25, 2006, in Milan, surrounded by her loyal and dedicated family members. Eleanor had a long and distinguished career in local politics, which included serving on the Planning Commission in Milan Township for 15 years. She was well known for her devotion to animals in general and to airedale terriers in particular. She is survived by her sister Madeline (Ronald) Patrick of Mancelona, Mich., her brother Paul Lobbestael of Beaverton, Mich., many other members of her extended family, and numerous friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul J. Johnson, 5 brothers (Alexander, Charles, Leo, Alfred, and Fremont Lobbestael), and 3 sisters (Elizabeth Demel, Margaret Hanson, Edith Reaume). According to her wishes, cremation has taken place. Those wishing to contribute in her memory may do so at the Humane Society or Arbor Hospice.

Dorothy E. Symons,

Saline

Dorothy E. Symons, age 89, died March 14, 2006 at the Saline Evangelical Home.

She was born July 19, 1916 in Detroit, the daughter of August and Ruth (Cantile) Smith. On June 28, 1941, she married Mervin L. Symons, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 11, 1988. Dorothy attended Christ Our King Lutheran Church of Saline for several years.

Survivors include: two children, Janice (R. Grant) Burnett of Saline and James (Dottie) Symons of Ann Arbor; five grandchildren, James (Karen) Burnett, John (Kim) Burnett, Jason (Kelly) Burnett, Justin (Robbie) Burnett, and Rachel (Jason) Gutting; and nine great-grandchildren. One sister, Marion, preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held on March 17 at the Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home in Saline with Rev. Thomas Schroeder officiate. Burial followed in Oakwood cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Saline Evangelical Home or Arbor Hospice.

Donald L. Mills

Saline

Donald L. Mills, age 74, died Wednesday morning, March 15, 2006 at Saint Joseph Mercy Saline Hospital with his loving family by his side.

He was born Oct. 8, 1931 in Monroe to Emery and Florence (Becker) Mills. On May 20, 1955, he married Mildred Doty at the Marble Memorial United Methodist Church in Milan and she survives. Don graduated from Milan High School and earned an agricultural degree from Michigan State University. He then served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He farmed most of his life on local farms including the Floyd Ernst Farm and John Neckel's Farm. Don also worked for Ford Motor Co. Ypsilanti plant where he retired in 1986. Don was a devoted family man who enjoyed all life's creatures. He was known to feed anybody who was hungry including every living animal he saw.

Besides his wife. he is survived by his daughter Vicki (Charles) Bobo of Chelsea; a son, Daniel (Janet) Mills of Manchester; and three grandchildren; Steven, Lisa and Kristen Wojtowicz. His parents and an infant brother preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home in Milan on March 18. A private burial ceremony will be conducted in Marble Park cemetery at a later date.

Ruby Vedner Walker

Formerly of Saline

Ruby Vedner Walker, age 86, died March 14, 2006 at the Alterra-Sterling House in Winona, Minn. She was born July 7, 1919 in Alabama. Ruby wed Ardis Walker in 1936 at age 16 and the loving union lasted 54 years until his death in 1990. They lived in several places, as Ardis was a logger, coal miner, farmer and steel worker. Moving to Detroit in 1953, Ruby held jobs in a hospital kitchen and a packing plant before ten years of service with The Salvation Army from which she was retired on disability. The couple lived in Saline for four years until moving to Winona, Minn. with their daughter in 1989.

Preceded in death by three brothers, a sister, and three infant sons, she is survived by two sisters, a son, Morris Walker of Wyandotte, Mich., and a daughter, Brenda Terpstra (David) of Saline, six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

Diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 1975, Ruby persevered with a positive outlook continuing to spread cheer and laughter with her Southern accent, expressions and charm wherever she was. Her indomitable spirit blessed us all. Serving Christ, whom she loved and honored as her Lord and Savior, she ministered always to the needs of others and her rewards in Heaven will surely be great. After 31 years of limited mobility, she has now been freed to dance in glory. We rejoice in her release.

Interment took place at Roseland Memorial Gardens in Jackson, Mich., on March 20. Memorials may be sent to Hospice Services of Winona, 175 E. Wabasha, Winona, MN 55987.

Bruce R. Paxton

Saline

Bruce R. Paxton, age 77, died Wednesday, March 22, 2006 at Arbor Hospice in Ann Arbor after a long illness.

He was the son of William A. and Hazel (Reeve) Paxton, born Feb. 12, 1928 in Detroit. He graduated from Highland Park High School and attended the University of Michigan where he earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. Following college, Bruce was a member of the United States Army and served 19 months of a 2-year tour overseas, including eight months in an infantry line company of the 179th Regimental Combat Team in the Korean conflict. Bruce married Edith A. (Bonfardin) March 17, 1962 at Rutgers Presbyterian Church in New York City, N.Y. and she survives. When Bruce returned to civilian life he began his distinguished professional career at General Motors where he rose to supervisor of Plant Engineering at the Fleetwood assembly plant. He also completed a master's degree in industrial engineering at Wayne State University. In 1963, he joined the Hoover Ball and Bearing Co. where he eventually was elected a corporate vice president. In 1973, Bruce was elected President and Chief Executive Officer of the Hoover-NSK Bearing Co., which eventually became NSK Bearing, with operations based in Ann Arbor. After retiring as NSK CEO in 1986, Bruce stayed active as a consultant to NSK and various other manufacturing companies. He was also appointed Executive-in-Residence with the College of Business at Eastern Michigan University.

Bruce participated in a number of civic and community organizations including as a member of the Board of Directors of Junior Achievement of Southeastern Michigan and as a member of the Development Council of St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. He is remembered best for his contributions to the school district in his home of Saline where he served as a trustee on the Board of Education. Additionally, he helped found and was the first president of the Foundation of Saline Area Schools, a nonprofit entity which, annually presents grant awards for innovative projects in the district's classrooms.

Throughout his life Bruce enjoyed travel, woodworking, golf, friends and family. He was an inquisitive mind and will be greatly missed.

Bruce is survived by his wife Edith (Bonnie) of 44 years; two sons, Reid (Cindy) and Craig (Britt); daughter, Krista; and two grandchildren, Rachel and Alec. His parents, William and Hazel preceded him in death.

A memorial service was held March 29 at the First Presbyterian Church of Saline with Rev. Judy Shipman presiding. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Arrangements were handled by Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home, Saline.

Robert L. Tomlinson

Palmetto, Fla.

Robert L. Tomlinson, age 89, of Palmetto, Fla, and Onaway, Mich., died March 6, 2006 at the Manatee Memorial Hospital.

Born on April 26, 1916 in Springfield, Ill., he married Gwendolyn Edwards of Milan on Dec. 31, 1940, at the London Methodist Church, of Milan.

Robert retired from the Ford Rawsonville Plant on Jan. 1, 1973 where he was employed as a Process Engineer. Hobbies included farming, fishing, golf and woodworking. He was a member of the Onaway United Methodist Church and attended the Palmetto United Methodist Drive-in Church.

He had two sons, Charles of Mesa, Ariz., and John (Kathrine) of Maybee, Mich., were born in this marriage of 65 years.

He will be missed by two grandsons, Brian and Timothy; his granddaughter, Teri Steele (Jamie); a great-granddaughter, Kastonia; and a brother, Dwight of Ohio.

Memorial services will be scheduled at a later date. Cremated remains will be interned at the London Township cemetery.

Laura Belle Stoll

Ann Arbor

Laura Belle Stoll, age 86, died Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at the Saline Evangelical Home.

She was born Aug. 18, 1919 in Mooreville, the daughter of Arthur E. and Mamie (Meyer) Schrader. On Oct. 17, 1937 in Bowling Green, Ohio, she married Robert Stoll and he survives. She was a devoted wife and mother who loved to cook, sew, and grow roses.

Survivors include: her husband, Robert G. Stoll; her daughter, Marilyn Sibson and Jim Woods; two grandchildren, Lonnie (Lisa) Sibson and Troy (Jana) Sibson; two great-grandchildren, Rhiannon and Reed. Other survivors include several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by one brother Delmer (Leota) Schrader.

Funeral Services were held on Saturday, March 25, at the Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home with officiate Rev. David St. Clair.

Burial took place in the Oakwood cemetery in Saline.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the American Diabetes Association.

Jason A. Braun

Milan

Jason A. Braun, age 29 died Saturday March 25, 2006 at home with his loving family by his side.

He was born Sept. 11, 1976 in Ann Arbor to Ronald and Beth Ann (Berry) Braun. As a youngster, Jason was an avid skateboarder. He was a 1994 graduate of Milan High School, talented in artwork and had a passion for R.C. cars, which he raced.

Surviving besides his parents of Milan include: a son, Jordan; paternal grandmother Yvonne Walker; aunt Sondra (Rich) Stoddard; uncles Jerry (Dorothy) Braun and Michael (Gayle) Berry; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, paternal grandfather and a step-grandfather.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial took place at the Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home in Milan on March 28 with officiate, Pastor Kristine Sigal.

Those desiring may make contributions to the American Heart Association.

Elaine Eldene Blackno

Clinton

Elaine Eldene Blackno, age 79, passed away Tuesday, March 28, 2006 when our Lord called her into his loving arms after a prolonged illness.

She passed quietly at 7:10 a.m. with her loving granddaughter, Elaine Eldene at her side. Her family came together to be with her in her final hours. She was born Feb. 8, 1927 in Toledo, Ohio, the daughter of Charles and Mabel (Francis) Bushey. Elaine was well known for her smiles and her caring, loving and compassionate personality. She retired from the Saline Post Office in 1990, after 17 years of service. Elaine, her husband, Leo Paul and son, Brian, made their home on a farm in Saline for many years, after which, they moved to Water Wheel Estates in Clinton to enjoy their final years with their son as their primary caregiver.

Survivors include: two daughters, Cathleen (James) Massey Williams of Kalkaska, Mich., and Carolyn Massey Reynolds of Clinton; one son, Brian Paul Blackno of Clinton; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Her parents and her husband, Leo Paul in 1989, preceded her in death.

The funeral service was held Saturday, April 1 at Stark Funeral Service, Moore Memorial Chapel with Pastor Gordon Moore officiating. Cremation followed.

Contributions may be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA.)
