Mary Ernst

Houghton Lake

Mary (O'Malley) Ernst, age 69, of Houghton Lake Michigan died in Florida on May 22, 2006 after a long illness.

She was born on Sept. 23, 1936 in Ann Arbor, to Patrick and Vivian (Rice) O'Malley of Dexter. She married Lewis L. Ernst on Aug. 22, 1975 in Milan and was employed by the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) as a secretary for 28 years, the last 23 at the school of Education. After retirement, she and her husband moved to Houghton Lake in 1985. Mary was a member of the Houghton Lake Women of the Moose Chapter 227 (serving as the Senior Regent, 1988-89, and the Junior Graduate, 1989-90). She also belonged to the TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 725 in Zephyrhills, Fla., where she served as the Winter Secretary during 2004 and 2005.

Besides her husband, she is survived by: a son Brian (Lisa) Ernst of Milan; two grandchildren, Logan and Lani Ernst; one brother, Michael (Sandra) O'Malley of Mason; two brothers-in-law, Dale (Anita) Ernst of Houghton Lake and Neil Ernst (Calvin Hall, Life Partner) of Brooklyn, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Patricia (James) Wolf of Sandy, Ore.

Following cremation, a private family internment will be held at the Marble Park cemetery, Milan. A memorial Mass and luncheon will be at the St. James Catholic Church in Houghton Lake at 11 a.m. on June 24.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. James Catholic Church of Houghton Lake or to Hernando Pasco Hospice, East Pasco Care Center, 37439 Clinton Ave., Dade City, FL 33525.

Joe Tobias

Sharon Township

Joe Tobias, age 81 of Sharon Township, passed away suddenly Thursday, May 25, 2006.

He was born Oct. 30 1924 in Jackson, the son of Orson and Martha (Hull) Tobias. He married Martha Devine "Sally" on April 11, 1953 in Erie, Mich. and she survives. Besides his loving wife of 53 years, Joe is also survived by his children: Anna Tobias (Earl Reimald) of Belleville, Joel (Karen) Tobias of Sharon Township, Cathy (Dave) Peasley of Escanaba and Mary (Clarence) Murdock of Britton; 11 grandchildren; and a sister, Maxine Maichele of Nashville. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant son: James Orson Tobias in 1959. Joe was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather whose hobbies were anything and everything his grandkids were doing.

A Celebration of his life took place on Tuesday, May 30 at the Borek Jennings Funeral Home, Jenter Chapel in Manchester with Rev. Kathy Meyers officiating. Burial took place at Washtenong Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be given to a charity of the donor's choice.

Elmer Steinman

Milan

Elmer Steinman, age 78, died May 25, 2006 at his home.

He was born Sept. 12, 1927 in Raisin Township, Mich., to Henry and Bernice (Sorter) Steinman. He served in the United States Navy during WWII aboard the USS Iowa and the USS Cabilldo, "plank owner." On Dec. 18, 1947, he married Lila Norton, and she preceded him in death in June of 1999. He retired from Ford Motor Co. as a tool and die maker after many years of service.

Survivors include: two sons, Guy Steinman of Milan, and Thomas (Debra) Steinman of Lake Elmo, Minn.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, one granddaughter; Dana Steinman, one brother; Leo Steinman, one sister; Agnes Kilpatrick. At Elmer's request, cremation has taken place, and there will be no services.

Arrangements are entrusted to Ochalek- Stark Funeral Home, Milan.

Marguerite M. Culliton

Saline

Marguerite M. Culliton, age 100, died Monday May 29, 2006 at the Evangelical Home-in Saline.

She was born Sept. 14, 1905 in Convoy, Ohio, the daughter of Frank and Nancy (Foley) Davis. On June 6, 1931 in Saline, she married Earl M. Culliton and he preceded her in death on May 20, 1987.

She is survived by: two children, a daughter, Elaine Carter, and a son, Earl D. (Shirley) Culliton, all of Saline; five grandchildren, Susan (William) Mulka, Robert (Sandra) Carter, David (Meghan) Carter, Sindy (David) Santure and Nancy Culliton; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. She also is survived by several nieces and nephews. Marguerite was preceded in death by two brothers and sisters and a son-in-law, Frank Carter.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 1 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Saline with Rev. Dr. James E. Tuttle Officiating. Burial will take place in the Oakwood cemetery in Saline.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church or to the Evangelical Home in Saline. Envelopes will be available at the church where friends may begin calling on Wednesday May 31, from 4-8 p.m. ad on Thursday from 10-11 a.m. There will be an Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 311, service on Wednesday May 31, at the church at 7 p.m.

Ross Gail McConeghy,

Beverly Hills, Fla.

Formerly of Milan

Ross Gail McConeghy, age 66, died unexpectedly May 30, 2006.

He was born Aug. 9, 1939 in Reading, Mich., to Maxwell and Babe (Bowman) McConeghy, who both preceded him in death. On Feb. 8, 1958, he married Sharon Hanson and she survives.

Survivors also include: five children, Carrilou Kaufman of Glendale, Ariz., Steven Ross of Milan, Lisa (Kirk) Straub of Milan, Scott (Tish) of Ypsilanti, and Sean of Saline; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Gary (Janet) McConeghy of DeKalb, Ill.; a sister, Marcia (Gerald) Bolog of Milan; and several nieces and nephews.

Gail (Ross) retired as an engineer from Ford Motor Co. Milan Plant in 1996 after 25 years of service. He served in the Air Force, was a volunteer for the Milan Area Fire Department, a member of the American Legion Post 268 of Milan, Loyal Order of the Milan Moose, an avid bowler, and a youth bowling instructor in Florida.

Visitation will be held at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home, Milan Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. where the funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Gordon Moore officiating. Military rites and burial will follow in Marble Park cemetery, Milan.

Those desiring may make contributions to American Cancer Society.

Lucille Miller

Ann Arbor

Lucille Miller, age 88, passed away Wednesday, May 31, 2006 in Ann Arbor. She was born on July 22, 1917 in Hamilton, Texas, the daughter of Frank and Ollie (Camp) Wood. Lucille was raised and met her husband Harold Thomas Miller in Dallas Texas; they married Sept. 2, 1938. Lucille taught school, had owned Lucille Miller Personnel Services, taught Sunday school, and loved crossword puzzles. Lucille is the beloved wife of Harold Thomas of Ann Arbor, a beloved mother of Marsha Lucille (William) Lane and Marjorie Tom (David) White, a beloved grandmother of Memorie Rhea Reesman, Amie Elizabeth Ellis, Clinton Reed Pierce, Mary Anne McCandless, and Melissa Catherine Eastridge, and one sister, Marjorie Arnold. Two sisters and two brothers preceded her in death. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Nie Family Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 2400 Carpenter Rd.

Thelma G. Cunkle

Formerly of Milan

Thelma G. Cunkle, age 100, of Homer, passed away June 11, 2006 at Litchfield Nursing Centre.

She was born in a sod house on Jan. 25, 1906 in Tribune, Kan. to John and Gertrude (Smith) Smith. The small town changed its name to Thelma, the first baby born there. On Nov. 26, 1930, she married Herschel Cunkle, who preceded her in death in Nov. 1988. She was a homemaker who also worked at the Post Office and taught at a one-room schoolhouse which both bore her name. Thelma moved to Milan, where she was a life member of the Milan Chapter of the Eastern Star. She moved to Homer in 1980 and was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Homer. Thelma enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing, reading, traveling and was a talented piano player.

Survivors include: three sonsm Harold (Mary Lou) Cunkle of Homer, Bill (Helen) Cunkle of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Richard (Carolyn) Cunkle of Saline; a sister, Mary Bevins of Oklahoma City, Okla.; eight grandsons; one granddaughter; 25 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herschel; one son, Walter; three sisters, Flossie Smith, Orpha Stinson and Helen Lindley.

The funeral service will be Friday, June 16 at 11 a.m. at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, 811 Finley Drive, Albion, with Rev. Don Smith officiating. Interment will take place at Fairview cemetery in Homer.

Visitation will be Thursday, June 15 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Homer Presbyterian Church.

Howard Kendall Clark

Saline

Howard Kendall Clark, age 80, died Wednesday June 14, 2006 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor.

He was born June 21, 1925 in Flint, the son of Howard Isiac and Rita (Lee) Clark. He had been a Saline resident since 1964. On Aug. 26, 1950, he married Kristeen Ramsey and she preceded him in death on Aug. 3, 1988. He then married Sally Page on July 27, 1991 and she survives. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in 1949 and continued his education receiving his master's of business administration in 1951. During Ken's early years he worked in the automotive industry, for Ford Motor Co., and continued his employment in the Ann Arbor area with Malloy Lithographers. Ken was a member of Holy Faith Church in Saline, the Saline Rotary Club, the Higgins Lake Boat Club, the Huron Valley Swim Club, Acasia Fraternity, Travis Pointe Country Club, Victors Club and was a lifelong U-M football fan. He was also a Veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II.

Survivors in addition to his wife, Sally, include: three children, Mrs. Michael (Lee Ann) Barrineau of Charlotte, N.C., Mrs. Gary (Kim Marie) Braun of Saline, and Jim (Dedra) Clark of Farmington Hills; five grandchildren, Clark Barrineau, Sarah Barrineau, Kyle Braun, Chris Clark and Colin Clark. Ken is also survived by his brother, Drs. Robert (Marge) Clark and several nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held at Holy Faith Church in Saline on Saturday June 17, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dr. A. Dale Truscott officiating. Burial was private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Faith Church in Saline.

Matthew Earl Marion

Saline

Matthew Earl Marion, age 28, went home to be with his Lord on June 15, 2006, due to an accident.

He was born March 4, 1978, at home to Paul and Connie (Uhr) Marion. He was baptized at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Saline on April 9, 1978, and was confirmed on May 3, 1992 where he was an active member his entire life. He was a graduate of Saline High School Class of 1997, and attended Washtenaw Community College while working as a machinist at Saline Metals for nearly 10 years. His love was working at home on his family's dairy farm.

Survivors include: his mother and father, Paul and Connie; one grandmother, Doris Marion; six brothers, Mike (Lisa) Mark (Melisa, ) Martin, Melvin, Milton and Mitch; four sisters, Marcia, Melissa (Bill) Daugherty, Molly, and Marie; four nieces and nephews, David, Emma, Derek, and Megan. He is also survived by many aunts and uncles, great aunts and uncles, and many cousins, and Godparents Randy Uhr and Marilyn Marion, Godchild Emma Marion and many friends. He was preceded in death by three grandparents, Earl and Olga Uhr and Herman Marion.

Funeral services took place on Monday, June 19, at 11 a.m. from the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church Saline with Rev. William Natsis and Rev. Mark Smith officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood cemetery

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church or the Saline Area Fire Department.

He will be greatly missed by us all.

Gail L. Hardenbergh

Ypsilanti

Gail L. Hardenbergh, age 58, of Ypsilanti, died Thursday, June 22 after a five-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

She was born in Detroit on Jan. 16, 1948. She grew up in Royal Oak and raised her family in Ferndale. Gail got her degree in Library Science from Wayne State University in 1991 and worked at the Ferndale Public Library, Chesterfield Public Library, Elsie Quirk Public Library, and the Milan Public Library.

Surviving are her daughter, Diana Gill of Elkhart, Ind., and her son, David Gill of Philadelphia; her parents, Alan and Dorothy Hardenbergh of Troy; a sister, Janet Fournier and brother-in-law Gary Fournier of Rochester; nieces Christy (Josh) Landefeld of Waterford, Allison (Brandan) Bradney of Louisville, Tenn., nephew Steven Fournier of Rochester and innumerable other family members and friends.

According to her specific wishes, there will be no funeral or visitation. A memorial party in celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, July 2, with open hours from 3-7 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 2079 12-Mile Rd., in Berkley, Mich.

Patricia Lynn (Burch) Burnsed

Pembroke, Ga.

Formerly of Milan

Patricia Lynn (Burch) Burnsed, age 49, died after a short illness, June 20, 2006 at Memorial Hospital in Savanna, Ga.

She was born Oct. 16, 1956 in Ann Arbor to Everett and Myrna (Drew) Burch. Patricia was married to John Jacobus, and then on May 23, 1985 she married James Burnsed. Patricia was a former member of Eastern Star in Georgia and attended Church of Christ in Pembroke.

Survivors include: parents Everett and Rosemary Burch of Kalamazoo and Myrna and Joseph Porter of Milan; daughter Kathy Ann (Jacobus) Kennedy and husband Paul, of Pembroke, Ga.; three stepchildren, Mary-Jo (David) Velez, Daniel (Shawna) Burnsed, Mark (Teresa) Burnsed; siblings James Lee (Debbie) of Orlando, Fla., Carla (Robert) Smith of Mineral Point, Pa., Sue (Lonny) Sanford and Bob (Simone) Burch, both of Milan; eight grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Two grandchildren preceded her in death.

The funeral was held in Pembroke, GA on Friday, June 23, with burial at Black Creek cemetery, Ellabell, Ga.
