MARIE MAY MITCHELL

Milan

Marie May Mitchell, 80, of Milan died peacefully in her home July 6, 2006, as a result of cancer. She was born May 14, 1926, in Charlevoix the youngest of three to Stanley and Theresa Jancha, both first-generation Czech immigrants.

Mrs. Mitchell grew up working on the family farm, which supplied fresh produce to the resorts and hotels in the area. She graduated from Charlevoix High School, where she played the clarinet, in 1944. She also enjoyed a brief stint as a professional clarinet player in Charlevoix.

Mrs. Mitchell graduated from nursing school at Foote Memorial Hospital in Jackson in 1948 as a registered nurse after getting started with one year at the University of Michigan. The U.S. Cadet Nursing initiative that was started as a result of the nursing shortage during World War II funded her nursing education.

Mrs. Mitchell married Josh Mitchell, who preceded her in death in 1984, Sept. 19, 1948, in Saline. She began her nursing career at Ypsilanti State Hospital in 1949. Her career there spanned more than 40 years, and she retired as assistant director of nursing in the spring of 1988. Mrs. Mitchell was an active member of the hospital retiree organization.

A loving mother, grandmother and a faithful friend, Mrs. Mitchell loved to send cards, call or e-mail to let people know that she was thinking of them and that she cared. An avid reader and word puzzle solver, she was also a steadfast Detroit Tigers fan. She consistently put the needs of others before her own throughout her entire life, frequently making personal sacrifices to provide for family and friends.

Also preceding her in death were her parents; her brother, Ted Jancha (1999); and two children lost to miscarriage.

She is survived by her sister, Olga Stevens of Bradenton Beach, Fla., Ted's wife, Lois Jancha of St. Joseph; three children, Terri Mitchell of Milan, Odie Mitchell of Saline and David (Carol) Mitchell of Pinckney; five granddaughters, Christine (Gerald) Marek of Ann Arbor, Stephanie (Colin) Lambers of Milan, Jami Mitchell of Ypsilanti, Shelby Mitchell and Suzanne Mitchell of Pinckney; one great-granddaughter, Abby Marek; one niece; and four nephews and their families.

Memorial contributions may be given to the People's Presbyterian Church Children's Library Fund honoring Mrs. Mitchell's love for children and for reading. Gift envelopes will be available at the memorial service or may be mailed to the church at 210 Smith St., Milan, MI 48160.

A memorial service, which will be followed by a luncheon-fellowship, will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at People's Presbyterian Church in Milan. The Rev. Arthur Oberg will officiate. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements were by Generations in Ann Arbor.

RYAN D. TRIPP

Chelsea

Ryan Daniel Tripp, 26, of Chelsea passed July 5, 2006. He was born June 6, 1980, in Ann Arbor to Kathy A. Lentz-Henderson and Richard Lynn Tripp.

Mr. Tripp married Rebekkah Marie Burby and they had one son, Kahner Dylan Tripp.

Mr. Tripp is also survived by his sister, Breanna M. Henderson; brothers, Joshua L. Tripp and Matthew N. Tripp; stepparents, Ronald D. Henderson and Peggy A. Tripp; and grandfathers, Donald H. Lentz and Dale N. Tripp.

His grandmothers, Barbara M. Kellogg-Lentz and Dolores Drago-Tripp, preceded him in death.

Memorial services were held Monday at Christ Our King Lutheran Church in Saline. The Rev. Thomas Schroeder officiated.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Educational Fund of Kahner Dylan Tripp. Envelopes are available the Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home in Saline.

RUSSELL BOGGS JR.

Brighton

Russell "Budd" Boggs Jr., 63, of Brighton died July 16, 2006, at his home surrounded by his family following a lengthy illness. He was born Jan. 31, 1943, in Ann Arbor the son of Russell and Irene (Vaughn) Boggs Sr.

Mr. Boggs attended Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor. Following high school, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he served four years as an engineman on the submarine U.S.S. Salmon and was stationed in San Diego.

In 1964, he married Catherine Monroe in Ann Arbor. Following his discharge from the Navy in 1965, he went to work for King Seeley of Ann Arbor as a machinist until 1967. In 1967, he joined Brighton Tool and Die as a superintendent until his retirement in June 2005.

Mr. Boggs was a great family man, devoted to his wife and children and loved by all.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Catherine, are his four children, Wesley (Michele) Boggs, DuWanna (Dennis) Beck, Wayne (Rebecca) Boggs and Joseph (Katherine) Boggs; seven grandchildren, Dean, Mitchell, Dominique, Kyle, Morgan, Christopher and Easton; four sisters, Mae Jean (Don) Monroe of Brighton, Deloris (Raymond) Stillion of Novi, Carol Sue (Richard) Veal of Ypsilanti and Linda Atwood of Brighton; and one brother, Charles "Wally" Boggs of Ann Arbor.

His parents preceded him in death.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated, 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Brighton. Burial with military honors will follow at the Great Lakes National cemetery in Holly. Visitation will begin 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the church.

MYRTLE M. KANITZ

Milan Township

Myrtle M. Kanitz, 86, of Milan Township died July 18, 2006, at Saline Evangelical Home. She was born March 11, 1920, in Azalia to William and Helen (Lamson) Reum.

On June 18, 1941, she married Boyd F. Kanitz, and he preceded her in death May 28, 1995.

Mrs. Kanitz and her husband farmed all of their married life and were members of the Monroe County Farm Bureau. Both were very active with farming and conservation.

Mrs. Kanitz also was a beautician and a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Britton. She taught Sunday school, and was a church pianist and a member of U.M.W.

The couple were dedicated members to their church, where they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1991.

Survivors include three daughters, Elaine (Thomas) Weaver of Delton, Linda (Clyde) Cislo of Milan and Rosemary (Robert) Westrick of Temperance; seven grandchildren, Geoffrey (Amy), Andrew (Kari) and Jennifer Cislo, Lindsay and Matthew (Kristina) Weaver, and Jeremy (Jenny) and Jodi Westrick; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home in Milan and from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church in Britton. The Rev. Amy Mayo-Moyle will officiate. Burial will follow at Marble Park cemetery in Milan.

GUY GRAZIER G'SELL

Saline

Guy Grazier G'Sell, 22, of Saline died July 13, 2006. He was a student at Stanford University and a 2001 graduate of Saline High School.

Mr. Grazier G'Sell attended Stanford University from 2002 to 2006, majoring in physics. His pursuits included social dancing, biking, running, swimming and backpacking. In 2005, he spent six weeks sailing in the Pacific, conducting marine research.

He was very active in student life at Stanford, greatly influencing his many friends through his irrepressibly positive spirit.

Mr. Grazier G'Sell was born Aug. 22, 1983, in New Haven, Conn. He also lived in the San Francisco Bay Area and Ithaca, N.Y., before moving to Michigan in 1997 and entering high school.

He was diagnosed with brain cancer in the summer of 2001 and deferred enrollment at Stanford for a year, as he underwent extensive therapy and rehabilitation. Mr. Grazier G'Sell experienced recurrences of his cancer in 2004 and 2005 for which he underwent additional surgeries and chemotherapy. Each time, he fought back and returned to Stanford.

He died one month after walking through commencement with his graduating friends.

Mr. Grazier G'Sell is survived by his parents, Kyle Grazier and William G'Sell; his brothers, Max and Gabe Grazier G'Sell; and his sister, Alex Grazier G'Sell.

Mr. Grazier G'Sell was an incredible teacher and role model for his entire family, and he will be missed enormously, they said.

An open house in his memory will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at his family's home.

Donations may be applied to a memorial fund established by his friends at Stanford or to cancer research.

ROBERT G. "BOB" DUFFANY

Saline

Robert G. "Bob" Duffany, 76, of Saline died peacefully at home July 22, 2006, surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 4, 1930, in Superior, Wis., the son of George and Ethel (Oberst) Duffany.

Mr. Duffany was a graduate of LaSalle University, and retired after 30 years as a project accountant for Bechtel Power Corp. He did the start-up and the final closeout for many job sites throughout the United States, most recently completing jobs in California and Washington State. He also spent several years in the area home office in Ann Arbor covering the nuclear power plants in Monroe and Pallisades.

Mr. Duffany served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He loved his family and was an inspiration to all who knew of his determination to survive his battle with cancer.

Mr. Duffany was an avid collector of stamps and coins, and a "Walking Miracle" with his 13-mile per day walks throughout the city of Saline. As a young man, he sailed on the Great Lakes and watched the yearly construction progress of the Mackinac Bridge.

Mr. Duffany had a passion for reading history books, as well as biographies of famous presidents.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, JoAnn; his sons, Scott and Ryan; his daughter, Shannon; daughter-in-law, Julie; and his grand-daughter, Amber Marie.

Mr. Duffany was preceded in death by his parents, George and Ethel (Oberst) Duffany; his sister, Ethel Mae; and his brother, Donald.

The Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home in Saline has handled funeral arrangements. A memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Saline. The Rev. William Stevenson officiated.

The family received friends and guests at the church before the Mass.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or The Veronica Walker Scholarship Fund at Child Care Network. Envelopes are available at the church.

ANN l. REED

Milan

Ann L. Reed, 85, of Milan died July 20, 2006, at Arbor Hospice Residence with her family by her side. She was born Oct. 20, 1920, in Windsor, Ontario, to Thomas and Isabelle (Murphy) Omara.

In 1952, Mrs. Reed moved to Milan, where she and her husband, Harry, purchased the Milan restaurant now known as the Campfire. They owned and operated the Campfire restaurant from 1952 to 1965.

In 1965, Mrs. Reed went to work for the University of Michigan Hospital as a nurse's aide, and retired after 20 years of service. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Milan and was an active caregiver for many Milan residents.

Mrs. Reed is survived by her children, Patricia (Gil) Novak, Joanne (Ron) Miller, Janice (Ken) Schultz, Faye (Doug) Brown and Daniel (Kathy) Reed; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Evelyn Vickers, Mary (Bill) Kozak and Barbara Spillman.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home in Milan, where a rosary-scripture service will be held at 7:30 p.m. that evening.

Funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Milan. She will lie in state at the church from 10 a.m. Monday until time of service.

Burial will follow at Michigan Memorial Park in Flat Rock. Contributions may be made to Arbor Hospice. Online condolences may be sent through www.ochalekstark.com
