Mr. Larry Steeb
Dexter, MI
1947 ~ 2007
Age 59, passed away February 12, 2007 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. He was born April 5, 1947 in Ann Arbor, MI the son of Rolland and Gwendolyn Steeb. Larry was a graduate of Eastern Michigan University where he received his Masters in teaching. He retired as a teacher and coach after 35 years in 2006 from Whitmore Lake Public Schools. Larry declared his greatest Moment - The birth of his son, His Greatest Achievement - Was helping to raise an incredible son, His Greatest Privilege - Teaching, His Greatest Honor - Coaching, His Greatest Moments - Watching young people strive and achieve, His Greatest Pride - Being part of MITCA (Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Assoc.) and the coaching community.
His Family...
Survivors include his son, Tyler Robert Bennett Steeb of Dexter, his sister, Cheryl Pailthorp of Saline, his brother Donald Steeb of Manchester and his former wife, Marcia Bennett of Dexter.
His Farewell Service...
A Simple Farewell Service for Larry will be held 11:00 AM Friday, February 16, 2007 at the Whitmore Lake High School Auditorium 7430 Whitmore Lake Rd. with Rev. Carl F. Welser officiating. In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions are suggested to The Tyler Bennett Steeb Education Fund, Habitat for Humanity or Southern Poverty Law Center. The family will gather with friends on Thursday from 2 to 8 PM at Borek Jennings Funeral Home, Hamburg Chapel.

WAYNE R. SMEAD

Formerly of Saline

Wayne R. Smead, 76, formerly of Saline, died July 31, 2006, at his home. He was born Dec. 31, 1929, in Adrian Township the son of Forrest and Ruth (Hagerman) Smead.

On Aug. 11, 1990, he married Barbara J. (Welter) Franklin at the First United Methodist Church in Saline, and she survives.

Mr. Smead had been a staff sergeant with the Ann Arbor Police Department for 26 years, retiring in 1986. Previous to his law enforcement career, he was a farmer.

Mr. Smead was active in the community, a member of the Kiwanis International Foundation, a member of the Saline Hospital Auxiliary and a longtime active member of the First United Methodist Church.

His interests included gardening and playing with his grandchildren.

Mr. Smead was a graduate of Onsted High School and Michigan State University.

In addition to his wife, Barbara, he is survived by his children, Roger (Sandy) Smead of Fruitport, Yvonne Smead of Saline, Elizabeth (David) Aitken of Metamora, Darren (Moravia) Smead of Lawrenceville, Ga., Jeanette Franklin of Parker, Colo., Richard (Ayesha) Franklin of East Leroy, Daniel (Kalolaine) Franklin of Los Angeles, Calif., James (Katherine) Franklin of Canton and Carol (Luis) Dimech of Warren.

He also is survived by grandchildren Charles (Carrie) Smead of Smyrna, Ga., Russell (Marlene) Smead of Calcium, N.Y., and two brothers, Don (Laura) Smead of Owosso.

His parents preceded him in death.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service was held Aug. 3 at the First United Methodist Church in Saline. The Rev. James Tuttle officiated. Burial was at Arborcrest Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the American Heart Association.

Arrangements were by Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home in Saline.

ALICE P. ROSS

Formerly of Milan

Alice P. Ross, 85, formerly of Milan, died Aug. 4, 2006, at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital in Superior Township.

Mrs. Ross was born Dec. 24, 1920, in Ecorse the daughter of Herve and Alice (Corliss) Giraud. She married Leonard Ross Jan. 31, 1942, in River Rouge. He preceded her in death Jan. 5, 1991.

Mrs. Ross moved to Milan in 1955. She had been employed by Hoover Ball and Bearing in Saline for many years. She had also worked for the Ypsilanti State Regional Hospital and the Campfire restaurant in Milan.

For the past 31 years, she had been a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Mrs. Ross is survived by her daughter, Diane (John) Schwartzenberger of Superior Township; a son, Dennis (Nancy) Ross; one sister, Jane Jones of Belleville; one brother, George Giraud of Taylor; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Alice Marie, in 1995; a baby boy, John, at birth; and nine siblings.

Visitation was Sunday at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home in Milan. A funeral was held Monday. The Rev. Bob Pienta of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church officiated. Burial was at Marble Park cemetery.

DANNY D. HANSON

Milan

Danny D. Hanson, 38, of Milan, formally of Grass Lake, died unexpectedly Aug. 7, 2006.

Mr. Hanson was employed by Ford Motor Co. in Saline. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He enjoyed coaching Little League for several years.

Mr. Hanson enjoyed life, especially time spent with his children. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Yvonne; son, Dana; and daughter, Sarah, both at home; parents, James and Shelia Hanson of Grass Lake and Jerry D. Lowe of Saline; grandmothers, Grace Hanson of Milan and Cleo Johnson of Ypsilanti; sister, Lisa and Dan Degregorio of Pleasant Lake; brother, Dustin of Canton; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

His grandfathers, Dale Hanson and James Johnson, and his uncle, Danny Johnson, preceded him in death.

A funeral was held Monday at Sherwood Funeral Home in Grass Lake. The Rev. Mark Meadows officiated. Interment was at Maple Grove cemetery in Grass Lake.

Russell H. Auten

Formerly of Milan

Born March 3, 1921 in Milan, Russ died peacefully in his sleep on July 30, 2005 in Cincinnati.

He was preceded in death by his father Leslie Auten, his mother Alice Kempf Auten, his wife Marvel Miller Auten, and his daughter Karen Odenwald. He is survived by his wife Dorothy DeVore Auten, one son, one daughter, two stepdaughters, one stepson, brother Kenneth Auten of Saline, sisters Harriett Searfoss and Marlene Berkley of Milan, four grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.

Russ attended the University of Michigan. He volunteered for military service and was a First Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps and was a bombarder on B-17s. He flew 32 combat missions out of England over France, Germany and Poland. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Army Air Corps Air Metal with Three Stars. After the service, he had a long and successful sales career.

A memorial to celebrate the life of Russ is being held on Aug. 20 in Cincinnati.

Theresa Kulik

Ypsilanti

Theresa Kulik passed away on Aug. 8, 2005.

She was born in Italy on March 6, 1927. She has been a longtime resident of Augusta Township, Florida and most recently Ypsilanti.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Dorothy Chiappino; two brothers, Ricky and Peter, and one sister, Mary.

Two brothers survive, John (Lyn) of Canterbury, England and Raymond (Ann) of London, England; and several nieces and nephews.

She married Ted on June 16, 1945 in Norfolk, England and he survives. They have one son, Joseph (Sandi) of Willis, and two grandchildren, Jeff (Paula) of Belleville, and Jody (Kirsten) of Willis. There are two great-grandchildren, Destinee and Jacob. Theresa retired from the Ypsilanti State Hospital in 1982.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Diabetic Association may be sent to Sandi Kulik, 9360 Willow Rd., Willis, MI 48191.

Cremation has taken place.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 409 W. Columbia Ave., Belleville. A luncheon will follow in the Parish Hall.

Eugene A. Schreiber

Formerly of Saline

Eugene A. Schreiber passed away Aug. 5, 2005 at age 84 in Port Orange, Fla.

He is survived by his wife Jacquelin of 52 years; three sons and one daughter, Michael Schreiber of Port Orange, Fla., David and Lynlee Schreiber of Saline, Donald Schreiber of Los Angeles, and Vicki and Greg Sheffield of Manistee, Mich.; and five grandchildren, Brandon, Hillary, Arielle, Kirsten and Andrew.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19 at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home at 4815 Clyde Morris Blvd., Port Orange, Fla.

EFFIE MAE (CAIN) KANITZ

Milan

Effie Mae (Cain) Kanitz, 108, of Milan died Aug. 15, 2006, at Saline Community Hospital. She had been a resident of Saline Evangelical Home for the past several years.

Mrs. Kanitz was born Nov. 14, 1897, in Hamler, Ohio, to William H. and Mima (Beck) Cain. On March 14, 1918, she married Clarence E. Kanitz in Milan, and he preceded her in death Feb. 1, 1983.

Mrs. Kanitz was a lifelong member of the London United Methodist Church and active in the United Methodist Women's Society for many years. She also was involved in Navy Mother's Club and received an award of merit from the American National Red Cross Monroe chapter.

Her gifted long life was dedicated to the task of being a loving wife, mother, grandmother and aunt.

She is survived by a daughter, Virginia Green M. Green of Kalamazoo; a son, Ronald E. (Joyce) Kanitz of Dundee; a daughter in-law, Carol Kanitz of Milan; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Jean (Fred) Falk; a son, Robert (Carol) Kanitz; and two brothers.

A funeral was held Aug. 23 at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Service in Milan. The Revs. Irma Ward and Richard Burstall officiated.

Burial was at Marble Park cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to London United Methodist.

WALTER DINDOFFER

Formerly of Milan

Walter Dindoffer, 82, of Lambertville, and formerly of Milan and Birmingham, died Sept. 4, 2006, at his home. He was born Nov. 6, 1923, in Milan, the son of John and Elizabeth (Karafiat) Dindoffer.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Dindoffer was a prisoner of war and received the Purple Heart, three Oak Leaf clusters, Silver Campaign Star, as well as several other citations and decorations.

Mr. Dindoffer married Lucille Rendel Feb. 22, 1947, at Milan Baptist Church. He was a 1946 graduate of Milan High School and earned a bachelor's degree in education from Eastern Michigan University in 1952. He had also attended classes in engineering at Wayne State University.

Mr. Dindoffer was employed by Teledyne CAE for 35 years, retiring as manager of test engineers in 1989. Prior, he was employed as a teacher at Hazel Park High School from 1952 to 1953. He also served as a trustee on the Bedford Township Board for 22 years.

Mr. Dindoffer was a member of the Ex-Prisoner of War, Wolverine Branch, a charter member of the American Bohemian Club and also attended Emmanuel Baptist Church in Toledo.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lucille, of 59 years; three sons, Fredrick (Joan) Dindoffer of Grosse Pointe Park, Walter G. (Tamara) Dindoffer of Temperance and Timothy (DeLynn) Dindoffer of Rocky Face, Ga.; two daughters, Christina (David) Harro of Whitmore Lake and Janice (William) Hunt of Fairfield, Conn.; a brother, John (Bonnie) Dindoffer of Milan; and 14 grandchildren, Robert, Michael and David Dindoffer, Joseph Harro, Diane, Stephen and Gregory Hunt, Sarah (Kevin) Anderson, Rachel and Emily Dindoffer, Elizabeth, Benjamin, Rebekah and Samuel Dindoffer.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Carl Dindoffer.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Michael W. Pawlak Funeral Home, 1640 Smith Road, in Temperance.

A funeral will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 4207 West Laskey Road, in Toledo.

Graveside services will take place 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Marble Park cemetery in Milan.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church or Visiting Nurse Hospice.
