VIRGINIA M. JEFFRIES

Saline

Virginia M. Jeffries, 76, of Saline died July 9, 2007, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in AnnArbor. She was born in Gary, Ind., June 12, 1931, the daughter of William F. and Florence (Stimpson) Alford.

She married Charles D. Jeffries Sept. 6, 1953, in Lithonia, Ga., and he survives.

Mrs. Jeffries was fond of and did much fine needlework, and was active in several fiber arts groups, including The Spinners Flock, Eastside Handweaver's Guild, Michigan League of Handweavers and the Handweaver's Guild of America.

She also was a leader and committeewoman in the Otsikata Council of Girl Scouts, and was a charter member of the Rubies and Amethysts Red Hats chapter.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her brother; F.M. (Dorothy) Alford of Jacksonville, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents.

A memorial service is planned for a later date. Arrangements were entrusted to the Robinson-Bahnmiller Funeral Home in Saline.

RAYMOND M. JORGENSEN

Milan

Raymond M. Jorgensen, 83, of Milan died July 11, 2007, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor. He was born Feb. 4, 1924, in Garden City to William S. and Clara (Kraepel) Jorgensen. On March 16, 1948, he married Alta Moyle in Detroit and she survives.

Mr. Jorgensen farmed all of his life and owned the Ray M. Jorgensen vegetable market in Milan, where people came from all over to buy produce and "pick their own" pumpkins.He employed hundreds of Milan youth to harvest sweet corn and pumpkin in his fields.

Mr. Jorgensen was a devout and faithful member of the Marble Memorial United Methodist Church for more than 70 years, serving nine years as chairman of the board of trustees, three years on the Pastor Parish Committee and Administrative Board, and volunteered for many church activities.

Mr. Jorgensen also was a member of the Washtenaw County Farm Bureau for 50 years, serving three years on the board of directors, and was a delegate to the state convention. In April 1974, he received the Distinguished Service Award for Outstanding and Faithful Service for membership drives. He also served as chairman of the Farm Labor Committee and on the marketing committee.

Mr. Jorgensen was a 4-H leader for four years, served multiple times on the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, was a member of Masonic Lodge 323 F & AM, was a York Township committee member, and devoted his time as chairman/co-chairman of the March of Dimes for York Township.

In addition, Mr. Jorgensen committed his time to serving on the Milan Board of Education for 12 years, from 1972 to '84, and represented Milan on the Washtenaw County Board of Education as a director. He also was founding member of the Milan Area Citizens for Better Schools.

Those who knew Mr. Jorgensen relished in knowing that he was just a darn good farmer and "the salt of the earth."

Mr. Jorgensen proudest moments were being with his wife, Alta. Together they traveled all 50 states, most of the Canadian Provinces, as well as several Caribbean islands.

Mr. Jorgensen also loved Christmas and expressed his faithfulness with carefully placing thousands of "magical white lights" on his shrubs each year. The lights could be seen for miles and became an anticipated joy for the season.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Raylene (Frank) Robinson of McLean, Va., and their three children, Brittany Layne, Noel Jorgensen and Chelsea Paige; his son, Marshall of Jackson; a brother, Knudt J. of Ann Arbor; sisters, Laura C. of Milan, Selma R. Knueve of Petersburg and Grace Alexander of Ann Arbor; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Dorthea, and Mary June Sheats.

A funeral was held Monday at the Marble Memorial United Methodist Church. The Rev. Kristine Sigal officiated. Burial was at Marble Park cemetery in Milan. Friends called on Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home Saturday and Sunday, and at the church Monday.

CLARICE R. PAGE

Saline

Clarice R. Page, 92, of Saline died July 13, 2007, at the Evangelical Home in Saline. She was born Jan. 1, 1915, in Chicago Heights, Ill., the daughter of Charles Pearl and Mae (Cutler) Thompson.

She married Charles Lawrence Page Oct. 11, 1937, in Crown Point, Ind., and he preceded her in death Feb. 7, 1965.

Mrs. Page was an avid member of A.A.R.P. and a member of Retired Indiana Public Employees Association. She worked for the School Town of Highland in insurance and accounting.

She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Lynn Jeannotte; her son-in-law, Philip Henry Jeannotte; and her nephews, Dave (June) Larson and Don (Carolyn) Larson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister and one brother.

Visitation was held Wednesday until the time of the Mass of the Resurrection later that morning at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Saline. The Rev. Gordon P. Reigle was celebrant.

Burial will take place 1 p.m. Friday at Chapel Lawn cemetery in Schererville, Ind.

VINCENT L. STEGENGA

Milan

Vincent L. Stegenga, 84, of Milan died July 12, 2007, at the Arbor Hospice Residence in Ann Arbor after a long battle with cancer. He was born June 23, 1923, in Portland, Mich., the son of Mino and Beatrice (Lawless) Stegenga.

On Sept. 6, 1952, he married Patricia H. Stewart in Charlotte, and she died Sept. 9, 1990. He then married his second wife, Jean Whitman Wells, June 25, 1994, in Rochester, N.Y., and she survives.

Mr. Stegenga was a 1951 graduate of Michigan State University. He earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.

Mr. Stegenga was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Saline and had been employed as an engineer for Ford Motor Co. in Dearborn for 32 years until his retirement in 1985. He was an avid HAM Radio operator with the call letters N8EAB. He also was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II.

In addition to his wife, survivors include his three sons, Donald (Rose) Stegenga of Ann Arbor, Kenneth (Glenda) Stegenga of Saline and Gerald (Laurie) Stegenga of Saline; seven grandchildren, Heather (James) Lollar, Heidi, Samantha, Stacey, Steven, Nicole, and Ryan Stegenga; one great-grandchild, Karris Lollar; a brother, Richard Stegenga of Charlotte; a sister, Eleanor Gorecki of Bettendorf, Iowa; and his stepchildren, Jack, Jim (Loreen), Joe (Carolyn), Jerry (Sue), Jay (Cyndi) Wells, and Jill (George) Kueppers. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Stegenga was preceded in death by his parents and by his stepson, Jeff Wells.

Visitation was Sunday at the Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home in Saline and included a scriptural rosary service.

Mass of the Resurrection was held at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Saline. The Rev. William J. Stevenson was celebrant.

Burial was at Oakwood cemetery in Saline and included military honors conducted by the Veterans Honor Guard of Washtenaw County.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Andrew Catholic Church or Arbor Hospice. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

ROBERT DAVIS COOK

Manchester

Robert Davis Cook, 51, of Manchester died Oct. 28, 2006.

"He was waved goodbye on his last boat home after a long, hard illness, " his family said.

Mr. Cook was born July 4, 1955, in Fort Dix, N.J., to Robert W. and Mabel (Gleason) Cook, who now reside in Saline, where Mr. Cook grew up and went to school.

After graduation, Mr. Cook worked as a merchant marine on the Great Lakes. After surviving a terrible fall, he returned to college to re-educate himself for a new career, knowing he would never be able to return to the work on the ships he loved so much, his family said.

Mr. Cook earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan and added a master's degree from Eastern Michigan University. He also enjoyed working at Washtenaw Community College's writing center, and looked forward to sharing his perennial interest in U.S history as a teacher.

Mr. Cook is survived by his parents; wife, Jane Elizabeth (Boatwright) Cook; and two sons, Sean Michael Jeffrey and Adam Robert (Morgan Voelker) Jeffrey.

He also is survived by his two sisters, Lauren Ann (Antonis Ioannidis) Cook of Chevy Chase, Md., and Lisa Marie (Paul Larmer) Cook of Paonia, Colo.; and a brother, John Christian Cook of Birmingham.

He had five grandchildren, Tyler Michael Jeffrey, Kevin Richard Robert Jeffrey, Faith Elizabeth Jeffrey, Riley Kenneth William Jeffrey and Colin Jonathon Lee Jeffrey, who were the light in his life, his family said.

Also surviving are nieces Phoebe Jane Rang, Zoe Marie Larmer and Olivia Crew Boatwright, and great-niece Summer Anne Caincross. In addition, nephews Richard Nelson (Telsha Davis) Caincross, Alexandros Robert Ioannidis, Andreas Agapios Ioannidis, Zachery Lee Larmer, and great-nephew Richard Nelson Caincross II survive, as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.

"He will be missed, not only by his family, but the many longtime friends he made in his short-lived years with us, " his family said.

A wake in celebration of his life will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Mr. Cook's home, 426 Adrian St., in Manchester.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rob Cook Memorial Writing Center Scholarship at Washtenaw Community College, 4800 E. Huron River Drive, Ann Arbor, MI, 48106.

Funeral arrangements were by the Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home of Saline.

MARY SMETKA

Milan

Mary Smetka, 89, of Milan died Dec. 3, 2006, at her son's home, where she has lived since she became ill. She was born Nov. 27, 1917, in Czechoslovakia to Anthony and Elizabeth (Tomecek) Koluch.

On May 4, 1940, she married Joseph Smetka in Toledo, and he preceded her in death Feb. 21, 1992. In 1956, they moved from Milan to Britton, where they farmed until Mr. Smetka's death. Mrs. Smetka then moved back to Milan. She retired from the Chrysler Corp. in 1981.

Mrs. Smetka was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Milan, Czechoslovakian Society of America, American Bohemian Club, the Chrysler Retirees, Milan Women's Club, Cone Extension Club, Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and the Milan Senior Citizens. She enjoyed playing in the Milan Fun Band.

Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth "Betty" Jean (Stanley) Sinn of San Jose, Calif., and JoAnne (George) Benson of Klamath River, Calif.; two sons, Tom (Joan Check) Smetka of Milan and Rick (Pam Gose) Smetka of Phoenix; seven grandchildren, Rochelle, Jennifer, Traci, Branch, Michael, Tina and Shanna; and two great-grandchildren; Rhiannon and Charlotte.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Antoinette "Toni" Korican.

Visitation was held Dec. 4 and 5 at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home in Milan. A funeral Mass was held Dec. 6 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Milan. The Rev. Tom Brennan officiated.

Burial was at Marble Park cemetery in Milan.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Immaculate Conception Altar Society or the Milan Senior Citizens.

VICTOR CAUDILL

Milan

Victor Caudill, 86, of Milan, formerly of Ypsilanti, died Dec. 5, 2006, at home. He was born Feb. 22, 1920, in Pikeville, Ky., the son of Joseph and Keturah (Elkins) Caudill.

He served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific. On Oct. 18, 1946, he married Audrey Anderson in Burdine, Ky., and she survives.

Mr. Caudill attended the Ypsilanti Old Regular Baptist Church and worked for General Motors, Willow Run plant, for 28 years, retiring in 1982. He loved camping and playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his loving wife of 60 years, survivors include two daughters, Judy Mullins of Milan and Gay (Jim) Brown of Los Angeles; one son, William (Gloria) Caudill of Adrian; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; two brothers, George

(Oda) Caudill of Jonesville and Frank (Gayle) Caudill of Wayne; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Merita Kay and Vickie Lynn; and one son, Doyce.

A funeral was held Friday at Ypsilanti Old Regular Baptist Church in Canton. Elder Gene Johnson officiated. Burial was at Cherry Hill cemetery.

The family received friends at Stark Funeral Service Moore Memorial Chapel.
