IVY ANNIE DUFFIELD

Tillbury, Ontario

Formerly of Milan - Ivy Annie Duffield, 90, of Tillbury, Ontario, formeriy of Milan, died April 14, 2007. She was born May 4, 1916.

Derby born and bred, she was one of England's Rosie the Riveters during World War II, running a crane, doing her bit for the war effort. She loved to dance the Charleston and sing ditties to all that would listen. She loved a good cup of tea and a nice long chin wag.

Mrs. Duffield could be seen working on her embroidery on the front porch of her son Geoff's home on North Street in Milan, where she came to stay after her dearly loved husband, Harold, passed away in their home in England. She was a loving and devoted wife, married to Harold Duffield for 63 years.

Mrs. Duffield had two sons, Geoffrey (Linda) and Roger (Daron) and was a grandmother and great-grandmother.

She never met a stranger; everyone was her friend. She was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew her.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon, Friday at Nie Family Funeral Home, 2400 Carpenter Road, in Ann Arbor. The funeral will be held at noon, with the Rev Gordon Moore officiating. Cremation will follow.

LINDA KAY (MATHIS) LEWIS

Belleville

Linda Kay (Mathis) Lewis, 53, of Belleville died April 8, 2007, at her Milan Kreager joins conference Andrew Kreager of Milan was among six Defiance College students who recently participated in the Idealist Campus Conference at DePaul University in Chicago.

The conference, affiliated with Action Without Borders, is a gathering of students, campus staff, and nonprofit professionals discussing practicah solutions to social and environmental issues.

The conference is hosted by a different college or university each year. Defiance College students participated in small groups where they had the chance to engage with other college students about global issues.

They also attended workshops focusing on-service, social justice issues and leadership. Keynote speakers included: Ami Dar, executive director of Action Without Borders/Idealist.org, and Stephanie' Nyombayrie, a representative of the Genocide International Network and Rwandan student at Swarthmore College. More - than 1, 000 participants from 300-plus campuses across, the country were in attendance.

home. She was bom Nov. 7, 1953, in Somerset, Ky., to the late Roscoe Lee and Linda Lucinda (Brown) Moore.

Mrs. Lewis spent most of her life in Ypsilanti, raising her family and operating her hair salon, L & C Haircare. She was a member of the Eagles, Women of the Moose, and the VFW Ladies Auxillary. She enjoyed traveling and classic cars.

Mrs. Lewis is survived by her husband, Keith Mathis; two daughters, Crystal (Merlyn) Wade of Canton and Kimberly (Robert) Jackson of Belleville; two sons, Jeremy Mathis and Justin (Shellie) Mathis, both of Belleville; seven grandchildren; and two sisters, Brenda (Gray) Jarvis of Milan and Debra (Guy) Moore-Hilden of Belleville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother-in-law, William Hilden; and two sisters-in-law, Karen Lewis and Sandra K. Fraser.

A funeral was held Thursday at David C. Brown Funeral Home in Belleville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation or Arbor Hospice & Home Care, and would be appreciated by the family.

MICHAEL A. WEBBER SR.

Milan

Michael A. Webber Sr., 72, of Milan died April 13, 2007, 'at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital with his loving family by his side.

He was bom Aug. 10, 1934, in Milan to Andrew and Sigred (Goethe) Webber.

On June 15, 1956, he married Katherine Plummer and she survives.

Mr. Webber was employed with Milan's Department of Public Works for more than 40 years, retiring in 1999. He also was a member of the National Guard, served on the Milan Area Volunteer Fire Department for 40 years, was an auxiliary police officer for more than 25 years, performed constable duties and assisted the sheriff's department.

In addition to Katherine, his devoted wife of 50 years, he is survived by son Michael Jr. of Milan and Michael's children, Krystle (Jon) Vanover and their daughter, Kayla, and Michael III; and son Dudley (Laura) of West Virginia and his children, Eric, Erin and Andrew.

He also is survived by a brother, Ronald (Bonnie) Webber of Milan.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Bonnie Elliott.

Visitation was held Sunday and Monday at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home in Milan. A funeral was held Tuesday. Burial followed at Marble Park cemetery in Milan.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Milan Area Fire Department.

PHYLLIS L. WHITE

Saline

Phyllis L. White, 78, of Saline died June 6, 2007, at Saline hospital. She was born July 13, 1928, in L'Anse. She was raised by her grandparents, Jens and Nannie Thoresen.

She married Willard White in August 1950 and he preceded her in death June 26, 2002.

Mrs. White worked for the Saline School District for several years, and developed many long and lasting friendships. She was a wonderful mother, and dearly loved her children and grandchildren.

Before her health started failing, Mrs. White enjoyed bowling, golf and was an avid card player, spent many hours at the Saline Inn and loved the Tigers. She was a member of the Saline American Legion Auxiliary and the Saline Senior Center.

In 2005, Mrs. White moved to the Evangelical Home in Saline, where she loved the staff and they loved her back.

She will be greatly missed by her daughters, Beverly (Matt) Clampit of Clinton and Sandee (Bill) Hicks of Tecumseh; three grandsons, Daniel Clampit, Ben Clampit and Jeff Hicks; sisters, Peggy (Michael) Pocatko and Janet (Ray) Ellis, both of Ohio, and Margaret Sayre of L'Anse; brothers, John (Janet) Wachsmuth of Texas and Tom (Nancy) Wachsmuth of Kalamazoo; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and brothers.

Visitation was Friday at the Clinton Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes. A funeral was held Saturday at the funeral home. Burial was at Riverside cemetery in Clinton.

BESSIE V. SMITH

Saline

Bessie V. Smith, 88, of Saline died June 10, 2007, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor. She was born Nov. 19, 1918, in Bond County, Ill., the daughter of Verse and Irene (Lawrence) Sanders.

On June 21, 1940, she married Harold E. Smith, and he survives.

Mrs. Smith had been a Saline resident since 1959. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Saline for more than 40 years, belonging to Ruth's Circle, and was a life member of Saline Chapter 311 of the Order of the Eastern Star. She held many chairs and was a life member of the Saline Hospital Women's Auxiliary, as well as a life member of Saline Senior Citizens.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two children, Connie (Bruce) Niethammer of Saline and Keith (Deborah) Smith of Ann Arbor; four grandsons; one granddaughter; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Elvin Sanders.

An Order of the Eastern Star service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday under the auspices of Saline chapter 311 at the Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home in Saline. A memorial tribute will given by Helen Lauterwasser. Burial will follow at Oakwood cemetery in Saline.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Saline chapter of the O.E.S. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

THOMAS A SCRUGGS
Saline

Thomas A Scruggs of Saline, 70, died June 18, 2007, at his home with his family by his side, after a long battle with cancer. He was born Aug. 27, 1936, in Plymouth the son of Claude and Hazel (Hill) Scruggs.

On Aug. 20, 1983, he married Janice Jo Jordan and she survives.

Mr. Scruggs had been a computer repairman for IBM for many years until his retirement. He was a member of the U.S. Army Reserve serving from 1954 to 1956, and attended the Fellowship Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, survivors include seven children, Thomas Al (Judy) Scruggs, Franklin J. Scruggs, Jack W. (Connie) Scruggs, Denise (Carl) Wintheiser, Lisa (Rob) Kaly, Erin E. (Ken) Percy and Kelly (Marc) Stratos-Duchene.

Other survivors include 18 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two brothers, one sister, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday from the Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home Saline. The Rev. Bert Spann will officiate. Burial will follow in the Oakwood cemetery in Saline.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fellowship Baptist Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home, where friends may begin calling between 2 and 8 p.m. Thursday.

JACK D. THOMPSON
Milan

Jack D. Thompson died June 3, 2007. He was born April 14, 1919, in Milan to Guy and Mabel Thompson.

Mr. Thompson married Wanda J. Thompson and she preceded him in death Dec. 9, 2005.

A lifelong resident of Milan, Mr. Thompson was very active in the community. He started in business in the mid-1930s hauling used cars to South Dakota for resale. He founded Thompson Coal & Coke, Thompson Fuels and was a distributor for the Sun Oil Co., building the gas station at the corner of West Main and Platt Road.

He was a member of Milan Rotary Club, Peoples Presbyterian Church and the American Quarter Horse Association.

In 1950, Mr. Thompson was elected to Milan City Council. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, flying his own airplanes, raising and showing his prize-winning quarter horses, and watching his family participate in sports.

Mr. Thompson was inducted into the Milan Football Hall of Fame in 1997 as a Big Red Booster/supporter. He had countless friends and was known for his boundless energy. He could be described by many as a Milan personality.

Mr. Thompson will be greatly missed by his family and community.

Survivors includes his four children, Larry (Joanne) Thompson of Chesterfield, Mo., Von (Cindi) Thompson of Saline, Jon (Sharon) Thompson of Willis and Lou Ann Thompson of Milan; a niece, Kristin Craig Smith (Gerald) of Chelsea; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service honoring his life will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at the Peoples Presbyterian Church, 210 Smith St., in Milan.

EMERSON A. WIEDMEYER
Frostproof, Fla.
Formally of Ann Arbor

Emerson A. “Pete” Wiedmeyer, 86, died June 12, 2007, on his 64th wedding anniversary. He was born Oct. 17, 1920, in Bridgewater Township the son of Alfred (Pete) and Margaret (Boyer) Wiedmeyer.

Mr. Wiedmeyer grew up in Saline, and during his marriage lived in Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor until he retired to Florida in 1974 and lived there the remainder of his life.

Mr. Wiedmeyer served for the Navy in the South Pacific from 1944 to 1946. After his military service, he worked for the American Broach, Mirco Film, and eventually the Milan Correctional Institution from which he retired.

On June 12, 1943, he married Alice (Wetherbee), and she survives. Also surviving are their two children, Larry (Kathy) Wiedmeyer and Linda (Larry) Hartmann; three grandchildren, Joe (Jill) Wiedmeyer, Kim (Ralph) Cabildo and Heather (Steve) Feldkamp; seven great-grandchildren, Gage and Tanner Wiedmeyer, Ryan, Alex and Olivia Cabildo, Jessica and Bradley Feldkamp; one sister, Evelyn Nelson, a great supporter; a sister-in-law, Mable Peabody; and many other nieces, nephews, close family and special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, more recently his brothers-in-law, Pat Wetherbee and Evan Nelson, and son-in-law, James Hartmann.

Mr. Wiedmeyer loved fishing, bluegrass festivals, flying and taking care of the park where he lived.

Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and there are no plans for a service at this time.
