ARTA D. HALE

Chelsea

Arta D. Hale, 81, of Chelsea died Nov. 17, 2006, at the Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born Sept. 5, 1925, in Bradley, Ky., the daughter of Samuel J. and Alda Ann (Lykins) Howard.

Mrs. Hale had been an Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti resident most of her life. On Sept. 17, 1946, she married Richard Hale Sr. in Ann Arbor, and he preceded her in death Oct. 13, 1995.

Family and friends were the joy of her life, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter, Myra Chriscinske; her husband, Dean of Chelsea; one son, Richard Hale Jr. of Salyersville, Ky.; three grandchildren, Richard (Samantha) Chriscinske, Liz (Marc) Oliver and Kelly Chriscinske; one great-granddaughter, Ashley Arta Oliver; and one great-grandson, Caden Richard Oliver.

She is also survived by three brothers, Ken (Norma) Howard, Don (Kathy) Howard and Dan Howard; two sisters, Naomi (Bob) Elrod and Kaye (Howard) Rice; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Jolene Hahn; two brothers, Fred and John Howard; and one granddaughter, Savannah Jane Kantzler-Hale.

A funeral was held Tuesday at Chelsea Retirement Community. The Revs. Beth Foster and Joy Barrett officiated. Burial was at Bethlehem cemetery in Ann Arbor.

Memorial contributions may be made to Chelsea Retirement Community's Towsley Village or to the Alzheimer's Association. Envelopes are available at the Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home in Saline.

Mrs. Hale's family would like to especially thank the staff, residents and caregivers at Towsley Village for their love, care and support.

DOROTHY M. HOWARD

Saline

Dorothy M. Howard, 88, a 17-year resident of Mill Pond Manor in Saline, died Jan. 26, 2007, at Saline Evangelical Home.

She was born Dora Edwina July 31, 1918, in Chicago to Stewart and Alice (Fitzgerald) Smock, and was later adopted by Omer and Emma (Smock) Martin, and named Dorothy Virginia Martin.

Mrs. Howard, a proud Chicagoan, graduated in 1936 from Hammond High School ("HHS is Still the Best!") and business college.

In 1939, she wed Richard C. Chambers, who died in 1957. She later married Vane Howard, who died in 1966.

Retired from the University of Chicago, Mrs. Howard subsequently moved to Saline and is survived by a son, Richard C. Chambers Jr. of Ann Arbor, and a daughter, Deborah (Steven) Elmore of Saline.

Survivors also include seven grandchildren, Richard, Christopher, Joshua (Shanna) and Nathaniel Chambers and Matthew (Breda) Elmore, Claire (Benjamin) Davis, and Katherine Elmore; and two great-grandchildren, Rya Chambers and Lydia Elmore.

Mrs. Howard loved cooking, cleaning, shopping –– especially at Marshall Fields where her credit card dated to 1948 –– the Dunes, vanilla ice cream, the beauty of nature, the Milan bus, parties, and her family, who all miss her.

Cremation has taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at St. Andrew Catholic Church of Saline.

Visitation will begin 10 a.m., followed by Mass at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Toledo Memorial Park in Sylvania, Ohio.

Memorial contributions may be made to Arbor Hospice or Saline Evangelical Home, whose loving care is greatly by the family appreciated.

ROBERT J. FLESZAR

Milan

Robert J. Fleszar, 61, of Milan died Jan. 22, 2007, at Tecumseh Place, where he resided for the past five years. He was born Sept. 12, 1945, in Ypsilanti to Chester and Theresa (Polzin) Fleszar.

Mr. Fleszar retired from Ford Motor Co.'s Rawsonville plant in 1988 as an engineer supervisor after 25 years of service.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Milan, Ypsilanti Jaycees, and enjoyed nature, fishing and spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sons, Anthony of West Bloomfield and Steven (Patricia Kiger) of Britton; two brothers, James (Dee) and William (Barb); and three sisters, Sandra (Michael) Watts, Suzanne Fleszar and Patricia (Daniel) Waltz.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Therese Fleszar.

Visitation was at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home in Milan, where a rosary was recited. Mass of the Christian Burial was held Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Milan.

Burial was at St. Joseph Catholic cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church or the American Cancer Society.

For the past five years, Mr. Fleszar received loving and thoughtful care at the Tecumseh Place Assisted Living Facility. His family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all of his caregivers.

EVELYN G. FARRINGTON

Grass Lake

Evelyn G. Farrington (Hill) of Grass Lake and Clinton, MI. passed away at 85 years of age. Evelyn passed away peacefully and without pain on January 17, 2007. Lewy Body Dementia took so much from Mom, but she never lost her lovely, warm smile or her appreciation of a good joke. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband David, her parents and her four older siblings. She is survived by her two children, David (Cheryl Palava) and Nancy (Steve) Camburn, sister-in-law Cora Biddulph and many nieces and nephews. Evelyn was born in East Tawas, MI and during her life she was a registered nurse, graduating from Hurley Hospital Nursing School in Flint, MI. She served proudly in the WAC in England during WWII. David and Evelyn raised their family in Ann Arbor, MI. Before her retirement from the Jackson County Medical Care Facility, David and Evelyn were proprietors of Dave's Bridgewater Inn for several years. Upon her retirement, Evelyn was an original participant in the unprecedented research project regarding womens health issues directed by Harvard Medical School and Brigham Women's Hospital. Her participation with this project ends with her death. David and I would especially like to thank Kathy Madden and her staff at Country Meadows Care Home and additionally, the staff of Tecumseh Place in Tecumseh, MI for their kind and compassionate care provided to Evelyn all these years. In lieu of flowers we would appreciate a remembrance to the Lewy Body Demension Assn., Inc., P.O. Box 451429, Atlanta, GA, 31145. There will be no visitation for Evelyn at her request, but in spring we will have a memorial gathering to celebrate Evelyn's life. Arrangements entrusted to Borek Jennings Funeral Home, Manchester.

CHRISTOPHER JON ANDREWS

Ann Arbor

Christopher Jon Andrews, 38, of Ann Arbor died Jan. 24, 2007, after a long battle with cancer. He was born May 10, 1968, in Dearborn, the son of Kathy Davis and H.L. (Andy) Andrews.

Mr. Andrews was a 1986 graduate of Saline High School. He was a member of the Saline Sons of the American Legion for more than 18 years. He had been employed as a contract floor installer for many years.

Survivors include his mother, Kathy Davis of Ann Arbor, and his father, Andy Andrews of Titusville, Fla.

Other survivors include a sister, Leslie (Scott) Stalker of Dexter; two nieces, Brittany and Mackenzie Stalker; aunts and uncles, Susie (Dick) Chapman of Gross Pointe, Janice O'Beirne of Livonia and Charles Andrews of Livonia; and two cousins, Brian O'Beirne of Washington, D.C., and Jason O'Beirne of Chicago.

Visitation was Friday at the Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home in Saline.

A memorial service was held Saturday at Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home. Burial followed at Glen Eden Memorial Park in Livonia.

Memorial contributions may be made to his nieces, Brittany and Mackenzie Stalkers, 529 College Plan. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

PAUL EASTERLING JR.

London Township

Paul Easterling Jr., 70, of London Township died Jan. 27, 2007, at Superior Woods in Ypsilanti with his loving family by his side. He was born Oct. 13, 1936, in Tallahasse, Miss., to Paul and Lillian (Patterson) Easterling.

Mr. Easterling married Gloria Joplin in Toledo, Ohio, and she survives.

Mr. Easterling worked for the Veterans Administration Hospital in food service until 1988. He enjoyed working on cars, carpentry, nature, gardening and spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Michelle Easterling of Taylor; a son, Paul Easterling II of Milan; one brother, Christopher (LaDonna) Easterling of Ypsilanti; a father-in-law, Lonzo Joplin of Milan; six grandchildren, Brandon Couch of Ann Arbor, Gary Couch Jr., Nia and Shaquille Couch, all of Taylor, and Jordan and Lauryn Bishop, both of Milan.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation was Friday at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home in Milan.

A funeral was held Saturday at Bethlehem Temple in Milan. District Elder Lester Whaley officiated. Burial was at London cemetery.

PHILIP HAROLD WEST

Saline

Harold Philip West, 83, of Saline died Feb. 3, 2007, with his family at his side. He was born Oct. 3, 1923, in Ann Arbor, the son of Arthel and Nellie (Smith) West.

Mr. West, a graduate of Ann Arbor High School, was a dedicated community servant.

On April 17, 1948, he married Phyllis Holland, in Hartland, and she survives.

He was a World War II veteran, serving in England for 15 months as a corpsman with the 22nd General Hospital Group. He was a proud member of VFW Post 423, the United Methodist Church of Saline and the Saline Community Fair Board.

Mr. West served as Scoutmaster of Troop 446 in Saline for 33 years. During that time, he mentored 35 young men as they became Eagle Scouts. He continued his involvement with Scouts throughout his life, attending his last Scout event in December 2006.

Mr. West was excited to be honored as the grand marshal of the Saline Community Fair Parade in 2004. For many years, he was employed at the Saline A & P store as the dairy manager.

Mr. West was a loving husband, dedicated father, proud grandfather, excited great-grandfather, and beloved brother and uncle.

He is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis, of 58 years; two children, Ronald (Vicki) of Fenton and Peggy (Mac) Whitford of Oak Harbor, Wa.; three grandchildren, Andrew (Michelle) of Moore, Okla., Daniel (Andrea) of Lindenhurst, Ill., and Rebecca West of Ann Arbor; three great-grandchildren, Jacob West, Kaitlyn West and Juliana Weiss; his sister, Ethel Fritts; three brothers; Ralph (Marilyn), Roger (Ruth) and Gerald; 18 nieces and nephews; and numerous great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Duane; his brother-in-law, Harold Fritts; and sister-in-law, Lois West.

A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Saline First United Methodist Church. The Rev. James Tuttle will officiate. Burial will take place at Lodi Township cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.

The family has established the Harold West Memorial Eagle Scout Project Fund to assist young men in accomplishing their goal of becoming an Eagle Scout.

Arrangements were by Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home in Saline.

CHARLES R. HERBERT

Macon, Ga.

Formerly of Saline

Charles R. Herbert, 70, of Macon, Ga., formerly of Saline, died Feb 8, 2007, at his home in Georgia with his family by his side.

He was born Feb. 27, 1936, in Highland Park, the son of Charles B. and Hazel G. (Eisenlord) Herbert. He had been a Saline resident since 1954, moving to Georgia in 2004.

Mr. Herbert had attended the First United Methodist Church of Saline and was a member of the United States Marine Reserve from 1955 to 1961. He also was a member of Saline American Legion Post 322.

In 1964, he became a reserve officer with the Saline Police Department, while managing the State Theatre in Ann Arbor. Throughout his 34 years with the police department, Mr. Herbert was promoted to corporal, sergeant, lieutenant and, as the first person to hold the position, he retired as deputy chief of police.

Upon retirement, he decided to run for City Council and went on to win the City Council seat for two terms.

Survivors include three children, Mechelle (Michael) Mahnke of Macon, Ga., Mel C. (Kim) Herbert of Onsted and Melany (Darryl) Chalker of Concord.

Additional survivors include six grandchildren, Braeden and Sabrina Mahnke, Shawna and Cody Herbert, and Mikayl and Jerry Losee; two brothers, Fred Herbert and Gil Volk; one sister, Dora Harrington; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A funeral was held Monday at First United Methodist Church in Saline. The Rev. Melany Chalker officiated.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Saline Police Department for the Charles R. Herbert Memorial Fund. Envelopes are available at the Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home in Saline.

Burial was at Oakwood cemetery in Saline.
