JANICE ARLEEN McLEAN

Chelsea

Janice Arleen McLean, 80, died Feb. 20, 2008, at the Chelsea Retirement Community with her family by her side. She was born May 30, 1927, in Lima Township, near Chelsea, the daughter of Herman and Ethel (Whipple) Hashley.

Mrs. McLean was a 1945 graduate of Dexter High School, and was employed at the Washtenaw County Clerk's Office for 29 years, retiring in 1993.

On March 26, 1955, she married Donald C. McLean, and he preceded her in death Nov. 27, 1983.

Mrs. McLean was a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ in Saline, and a member of the Saline and Pittsfield senior centers. She greatly enjoyed the opportunity to travel on many bus tours from Hawaii to the New England states. She also enjoyed playing cards and other activities.

Mrs. McLean became a member of the Saline Community Hospital Women's Auxiliary in 1986, volunteering in the gift shop. She was also a member of the Manchester and Saline Red Hat societies.

Survivors include her two daughters and their families, Nancy (Ronald) Kohler of Clinton and their children John and Jenni; and Donna Girbach of Saline and her children, Mitchell and Stacey.

Other survivors include one sister, Joyce Boyce of Chelsea and her three children, along with their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son-in-law, Keith Girbach; and her brother-in-law, Lloyd Boyce.

The family wishes to thank those who cared for Janice, including her sister, Joyce and family; Arbor Hospice; Campus Care; and Dawn Price.

A funeral was held Friday at the Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home in Saline. The Rev. Patricia Kenney officiated. Cremation followed the service and burial was at Oakwood cemetery in Saline.

Memorial contributions may be made to Arbor Hospice or the Barbara Ann Karmanos Breast Cancer Institute. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

ARMINE (SAM) F. SCHERDT

Saline

Armine (Sam) F. Scherdt, joined his parents, Theodore (Teddy) Scherdt, Olga Scherdt and brother Carl, in eternal rest on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. He attended Country School and Ann Arbor Public School. Sam served his country during the occupation and victory of Japan in World War II as a sergeant in the Air Force. He had worked a number of years at the Artificial Ice Company and The Old West Side Mill in Ann Arbor as well as employment and retirement from the Chemistry Store and Plant Department for the University of Michigan. He was a resident of Ann Arbor most of his life, retiring in Saline, and had been a member of the St. Andrew Catholic Church in Saline. Sam leaves behind his wife of 42 years Barbara, daughter (Walter) Sarah Rice, son Michael, and grandsons Joseph and Maximilian. He was preceded in death by a son Frederick. Visitation will be held at the Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home of Saline on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008, between the hours of 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., and on Monday, Feb., 25, 2008, at the St. Andrew Catholic Church from 10 a.m. until time of Mass of The Resurrection at 11 a.m. with Rev. Fr. William J. Stevenson Celebrant. Burial will take place at the Oakwood cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Andrew Catholic Church. Envelopes will be available at both the funeral home and at the church.

RAYMOND J. WOOLNER

Carbondale, Colo.

Raymond J. Woolner, 41, died peacefully in his sleep March 8, 2008. He was born Jan. 2, 1967, in Hancock.

Mr. Woolner will be deeply missed by his parents, Dave and Carmen Woolner; his sister, Leanne; his grandparents, Clayton and Marian Woolner; and several uncles, aunts and cousins.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held March 13 at Crystal River Baptist Church in Carbondale, Colo.

Mr. Woolner never met a stranger and was a friend to everyone.

Donations may be made in his memory to the Crystal River Baptist Church, 2632 Highway 133, Carbondale, CO 81623.

ROBERT E. DUNHAM

Ann Arbor

Robert E. Dunham, 79, of Ann Arbor died March 18, 2008, at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. He was born June 19, 1928, in Canton Township the son of Carter and Johanna (Koch) Dunham.

On June 14, 1958, in Princeton, W.VA., he married I. Ruth Wimmer, and she survives.

Mr. Dunham served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean War. He was employed by Ford Motor Co. for 31 years.

Mr. Dunham enjoyed being with his grandchildren, hunting and working on his farm.

In addition to his wife of 49 years, I. Ruth, survivors include his two children, JoDee (Paul) Weichlein of Epoufette and Carter (Dawn) Dunham of Garden City; four grandchildren, Derek and Ashley Weichlein and Kendal and Kamryn Dunham; and his sister, Virginia Basham.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A funeral was held Friday at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Scio Township. The Rev. Douglas Hartley officiated. Burial was at Salem Lutheran Church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church. Envelopes are available at the Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home in Saline.

ERMA VINCE PACIORKOWSKI

Ann Arbor

Formerly of Milan

Erma Vince (Bancroft) Paciorkowski, 88, of Ann Arbor, formerly of Milan, died March 22, 2008, at Hillside Terrace in Ann Arbor, where she had resided for the past four years.

She was born Oct. 3, 1919, in Columbus, Ohio, to John and Anna (Zgold) Vince.

Mrs. Paciorkowski is survived by four sons, James (Mary Lou) Bancroft of Dexter, Douglas Bancroft of Knoxville, Tenn., Richard (Sallie) Bancroft of Milan and Bruce (Zena) Bancroft of Tampa, Fla.

She is also survived by eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death was her second husband, Aloysius Paciorkowski; two stepsons, Jerry and Richie Paciorkowski; and a daughter-in-law, Mary Lee Bancroft.

The family received friends Wednesday at the Nie Family Funeral Home. A funeral service was held Wednesday, with the Rev. Michael Walters of Zion Lutheran Church officiating.

A private burial will be held at a later time.

Memorial contributions may be made to either Hillside Terrace or to Arbor Hospice.

GREGORY J. COWGILL

Formerly of Ann Arbor

Gregory J. Cowgill, 56, formerly of Ann Arbor and Traverse City, died March 12, 2008, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, Ariz., following an 11-day illness. He was born Nov. 25, 1951, in Bay City, the son of Reginald and Mable Cowgill.

Mr. Cowgill grew up in Pinconning and graduated from Pinconning High School in 1969. He continued his education at Delta College and Central Michigan University, earning a bachelor's degree in education from CMU in 1974. He added a master's degree in school administration in 1977 from CMU.

Mr. Cowgill spent his career at Milan Area Schools and served the district well as a geography teacher, assistant principal and finally as principal of the middle school. His career in education spanned 25 years until his retirement in 1999.

In 1982, he married his best friend, Beverly Salstrom. They worked side by side at Milan Middle School for those 25 years and then lived their dream of travel throughout the United States and parts of Canada in a motorcoach for three years following retirement. Old Mission Peninsula north of Traverse City was their next home. However, after another three years, the love of travel beckoned once again and, at the time of his death, he and his wife were traveling full time and enjoying new adventures, living the belief that life is a special occasion every day.

Mr. Cowgill enjoyed cooking, traveling, sports, music, finance and reading Western novels. He also had a special talent for teasing his grandsons whenever possible. He will be missed more than words can express and remembered most for his intellect, insight, gift of conversation, warm smile, quick wit and sense of humor.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife, Beverly; mother, Mable Cowgill, of Edinburg, Texas; two stepdaughters, Kimberly (Jeff) Ineich of Wixom and Kirsten (Eric) Butler of Ypsilanti; wonderful grandsons, Andrew, Matthew, Cameron, Jacob and Richard; and sister, Jennifer Alexander of Keller, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his father, Reginald Cowgill.

Cremation has taken place. Arrangements were handled by the National Cremation Society in Phoenix.

In accordance with Mr. Cowgill's wishes, there will be no service. His family, however, hopes you will consider a memorial contribution to the Barrow Neurological Institute, c/o Dr. Russell Walker, 350 W. Thomas Road, Phoenix, AZ 85013 for their continuing research efforts. They worked valiantly to save his life.

JULIA BETTY BILLAU

Ann Arbor

Julia Betty Billau, 83, of Ann Arbor died April 3, 2008, at the Saline Evangelical Home. She was born in 1924 to Audrey and Matthew Williams in Royal Oak.

Mrs. Billau married Ernest Billau in 1944, and he survives. Her hobbies were her family, home and her granddaughters, and she loved music.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Susan (Larry) Paul and Sherry (David) Gebhardt of Ann Arbor; one son, Rick (Teri) Billau of Ann Arbor; two granddaughters, Tricia Lynn Stehle and Lisa Julia Gebhardt; one niece; and two nephews.

Mrs. Billau was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Ruth Weber.

The family received friends Sunday at the Nie Family Funeral Home in Ann Arbor. A memorial service was held Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev Judy Jahnke officiating. Interment will be private.

SUSAN M. WALKER

Ann Arbor

Susan M. (Rutledge) Walker, 47, of Ann Arbor died at her home April 3, 2008, after a courageous seven-year battle with colon cancer. She was born in 1961 in Monroe the daughter of James and June (Klein) Rutledge.

Mrs. Walker grew up in Saginaw and graduated from Ferris State University. She moved to Ann Arbor and earned a master's degree in health and hospital administration from Central Michigan University. She was employed with the St. Joseph Mercy Health System for 20 years.

She married Rob Walker Feb. 6, 1988, in Ann Arbor. Mrs. Walker was passionate about her career, scrapbooking, traveling and camping with her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Rob; her daughter, Olivia; her parents; and her sisters, Sally (Joe Pia) Rutledge and Kathie (Doug) Cropsey.

Mrs. Walker's family received friends Saturday and Sunday at the Nie Family Funeral Home Liberty Road Chapel in Ann Arbor. A service of remembrance was held Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. William Stevenson officiating.

CHARLES L. RANKIN Sr.

Tecumseh

Formerly of Milan

Charles L. Rankin Sr. of Tecumseh, 80, died April 5, 2008. He was born Jan. 6, 1928, in Ann Arbor the son of Delbert and Lyrna (Goldsmith) Rankin of Ann Arbor.

Mr. Rankin lived most of his life in Milan and, after retiring from 40 years as a Teamster truck driver, moved to Tecumseh. He was a lifetime member of Milan Masonic Lodge 323.

Mr. Rankin will be deeply missed by his dear companion, Faye Summer; one son, Charlie (MaryAnn) Rankin of Saline; two grandchildren, Tim (Shelley) Rankin and Malissa (Duane) Guenther; and four great-grandchildren, Codie, Hannah, William and Zachary, all of Saline.

Mr. Rankin was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert O'Brien and Richard O'Brien.

Cremation has taken place. Family and friends may participate in a celebration of life memorial gathering from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Tecumseh American Legion Post, 101 Pottawatamie St., in Tecumseh.

Mr. Rankin loved the outdoors and fishing, so memorial contributions may be made to the Michigan United Conservation Clubs.
