Verne Shoberg

Verne L. Shoberg of Globe, Arizona, was a pharmacist who owned and operated a drug store in Sault Ste. Marie and in Cedarville. He passed away at his home Sunday, June 4, 2006.

He was born in Sault Ste. Marie October 4, 1934, to Tigner J. and Frances Lipsett Shoberg. He was graduated from Pickford High School in 1952 and attended Lake Superior College. He was graduated from Ferris State College in 1958.

Mr. Shoberg owned and operated a drug store in Sault Ste. Marie and a pharmacy in Cedarville. He worked in other pharmacies throughout Michigan and for the past 13 years in Globe.

Mr. Shoberg is survived by his children, Clifford and Laura Shoberg of Kinross, and Sandra Somerville of Sharpsburg, Georgia, six grandchildren Amber, Amanda, and Audrey Shoberg and Kyle, Mike, and Kara Somerville, and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by a brother and his family, Wayne and Johnette Shoberg of Globe, three nephews, Russell, Tom, and John Shoberg, and one niece, Frances Shoberg.

No service is planned. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

James Brownson

James G. Brownson, 65, a longtime Engadine area resident, was a teacher and principal at Engadine Consolidated Schools, serving the district for 29 years. Mr. Brownson died Friday, June 9, 2006, at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette.

He was born July 25, 1940, in Ashland, Ohio, to Franklin J. and Ruth (nee Brown) Brownson.

He was graduated from Ashland High School and received his bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, and in 1960 he married Peggy Green.

They moved to the Engadine area in 1962, where he was employed at Engadine Consolidated School District as a teacher. He retired from the Engadine Consolidated Schools as principal in 1991 following 29 years of service to the district.

Mr. Brownson loved hunting and fishing, and was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the NRA, the Michigan Education Association, and the Hiawatha Sportsmans Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy, who died September 18, 1973, and by his parents, one brother, and one sister.

Mr. Brownson is survived by two sons and their families, James of St. Clair Shores and Joseph and Lori of Napolean, Ohio; a daughter and her family, Jennifer and Tim Fletcher of Macomb; a brother, Walter, and two sisters, Betty Smith and Mary Lou Spicer, all of Ashland, Ohio, and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Hiawatha Sportsmans Club Recreation Center Saturday, June 17, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Arthur Bode officiating. Friends will gather at the center from 11 a.m. until time of services.

The family suggests memorials may be given to the James G. Brownson Scholarship Fund at First National Bank of St. Ignace. This scholarship fund will be awarded to students of the Engadine Consolidated School District.

Beaulieu Funeral Home of Newberry is assisting the family with arrangements.

Charlo Mahew

Graveside services for Charlo M. Mahew of Gould City will be held at noon Saturday, June 24, at Newton Township cemetery in Gould City. Father Timothy Hruska will officiate.

Mrs. Mahew died at the age of 90 March 28, 2006, at the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility in Manistique.

Memorial donations can be made to the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility at 520 Main Street, Manistique Michigan 49854.

Charles 'Pat' Rhoades

Charles P. "Pat" Rhoades, 95, of St. Ignace, died Friday, June 2, 2006, at Mackinac Straits Hospital Long Term Care in St. Ignace, where he had lived for several years.

In a full obituary for Mr. Rhoades printed in The St. Ignace News June 8, siblings preceding him in death were not included. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richardson Rhoades, who died while attending the University of Michigan in 1921, and Robert Michael Rhoades, an infant sister, Catherine, and sisters Helen Rhoades McCann and Georgia Margaret Rhoades.

He was also preceded in death by wives Frieda Caroline Brondstetter Rhoades and Margaret Mary Mertaugh McLeod Rhoades, and a son, the Reverend C. Michael Rhoades.

Mr. Rhoades is survived by his daughter, Dr. Mary Margaret Rhoades, a number of nieces and nephews, members of the McLeod and Porco families, and a special cousin, Mary Fenlon LaChapelle.

Mr. Rhoades was the last surviving child of John Henry and Emmaline Richardson Rhoades.

Mr. Rhoades will be remembered as a man who had a smile for everyone, family members said, and who was pleasant, gracious, and a true gentleman.

Mary Hancock

Mary Kathene Hancock, 86, of Dafter, worked on her family's farm in Pickford, at Kincheloe Air Force Base, and at the Soo Locks. Mrs. Hancock died Friday, June 9, 2006, at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie.

She was born June 28, 1919, in Ludington to Lemual and Anna Kathene (nee McGrath) Farero.

As a teen, she moved to Sault Ste. Marie, where she was graduated from Sault High School. In January 1939, she married her high school sweetheart, Lester John Wellington Hancock, in Detroit. When he returned from military service, they made their home on a farm in Pickford. In addition to raising their children and keeping up their home, Mrs. Hancock worked on the farm, at Kincheloe Air Force Base, and at the Soo Locks Information Center.

Mrs. Hancock was a member of the Donaldson Presbyterian Church and a lifetime member of the LawWhite VFW Auxiliary in Hessel. She enjoyed her home, and camping.

Mary is survived by her husband of 67 years, Lester; two sons and their families, James Hancock of Burlington, Wisconsin, and Fred and Wanda Hancock of Sault Ste. Marie; two daughters and their families, Barbara and Donald Ogston of Sault Ste. Marie and Judy Calloway of Owensboro, Kentucky; seven grandchildren and their families, Donna and Scott Chenard, Nancy and Michael Kasper, Joy and Chad Fox, Holly Hancock, Lester Hancock Jr., Laura and Mark Hufen, and Brandon Calloway; 12 great-grandchildren, Joseph Ogston, Steven Wehner, Samantha Wehner, Carl Jack Chenard, Hunter Bergstrom, Maddison Fox, Christonna Hancock, Nikolas Hufen, Rebbeka Hufen, Alecke Hufen, Eien Hufen, and Taylor Calloway; and two great-great-grandchildren, Taylor and Erin Ogston. Also surviving is one brother and his family, James and Marion Farero of Cedarville.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, John Farero and William Farero, and one sister, Jean Jones.

Visitation was held Monday, June 12, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, June 13, from noon to 1 p.m. at Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford.

Services were held Tuesday, June 13, at 1 p.m. at Reamer Galer Funeral Home with Pastor Kenn Filkins officiating. Burial will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens in Bruce Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Donaldson Presbyterian Church, 13036 South M129, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan 49783.

Vivian 'Helen' James

Vivian "Helen" James, 91, of Sturgis, formerly of Raber, was a mother and homemaker who served many years as a church organist. Mrs. James passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at Heartland Health Center in Three Rivers.

She was born October 7, 1914, in Manistique, to Albert D. and Florence Del Gracia (nee Bowman) Vail. She was a graduate of Manistique High School with the Class of 1932.

In 1936 she married Olie Ray Lanier of Manistique and they moved to the Lansing area.

When her husband died, she returned with her family to Manistique, where she worked for many years at the Siddall Drug Store.

On September 6, 1952, she married Roy James in Manistique and moved to Bronson.

Mrs. James was a mother and a homemaker who loved her family, cooking, crocheting, and playing the organ. She was active in her church, serving for many years as a church organist. Mrs. James was a member of the Raber Baptist Church and continued her membership in the Manistique Baptist Church. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Mystic Star Chapter 354 of Bronson for 38 years, serving in many positions. She was also a Gold Star Mother for many years.

She and her husband, Roy, enjoyed living in the Raber Bay area during their retirement.

Mrs. James is survived by one son and his family, Ray and Donna Lanier of New Port Richie, Florida, one daughter and her family, Linda and Bill Price of Sturgis, one stepdaughter and her family, Judy Reed and Arvard Fountain of Bronson, six grandchildren and their families, Bonnie Lee Lanier Kirnbauer, Johnny Ray Lanier, James Sanford Lanier, Penni Flo Pickern Hold, Larry Lee Pickern, and Rodney Pickern, three stepgrandchildren, Willodean Kurtz, Dyana VanWagner, and Brenda Eggleston, and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, LaVerne Vail; one sister, Vera McPherson; her first husband, Olie Ray Lanier in 1945; one son, John Albert Lanier in 1985; her second husband, Roy James, in 1992; one grandson, David H. Lanier in 1993; and two stepchildren, Janice James Koss and Bill James.

Services were held Monday, June 12, at 11 a.m. at Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford with the Reverend Samuel Maddox officiating. Visitation was held from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral.

Her grandsons, Rodney Pickern, Michael Hagelgans, John Lanier, Jim Lanier, Jordan Kirnbauer, and Michael Kirnbauer, served as pallbearers.

Burial followed at the North Raber cemetery in Raber Township.

Memorials may be directed to the Light and Life Wesleyan Church, P.O. Box 146, Three Rivers, MI.

Helen McInnes

Helen McInnes of Drummond Island was known as a good hunter and trapper, whom friends said was a pioneer in every way, able to do whatever it took to keep her family thriving in a primitive setting.

At age 14, she became the caregiver and provider for her two young brothers, ages two and five, and it became her job to care for the household.

Mrs. McInnes died at the age of 99 Sunday, December 10, 2006, at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie.

She was born April 3, 1907, on Drummond Island to James and Lucille (nee Cadotte) LaPointe. She grew up with her family on the shore of Maxton Bay, where they were surrounded by the homes of her grandmother, Mrs. Oliver LaPointe, and aunts and uncles, Alec, John, Joe, and their families. Her mother and sister died two weeks apart when she was only 14.

Always known as a hard worker, in her hunting and trapping days she covered most of Drummond Island by foot, or, where possible, by canoe. She also enjoyed fishing.

Mrs. McInnes was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, the St. Florence Catholic Church, and the Drummond Island Youth Center Board. She was a charter member of the St. Florence Guild, the Drummond Island Homemakers, and the Drummond Island Golf Club.

She took an avid interest in many things, and she was active in her church and community. She

worked at many fundraisers, donated quilts to raffles, and baked countless pies and turkeys.

Mrs. McInnes is survived by three daughters and their families, Jeannine McInnes Gable of Sault Ste. Marie, Bonnie McInnes and Carl Bucht of Drummond Island, and Blanche McInnes and Ike Isaacson of Tucson, Arizona; 13 grandchildren and their families, Daniel and Jan Gable Jr., Andrew and Jen Gable, Timothy and Katie Gable, Robert and Suzanne Gable, Carlene and Pat McGregor, Michael and Amy Bucht, Kelly and Dale Melvin, Holly and Matt Montreuil, Marion Layman, Sarah and Rob Wunsche, Anne McInnes, James and Monica McInnes, and Kim and Dave Derksen; 10 stepgrandchildren, and 27 greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lauchlan McInnes Jr.; two sons, Lauchlan McInnes III and James McInnes; one sonin law, Daniel Gable; one sister, Lucy LaPointe; two brothers, David LaPointe and Russell LaPointe; one grandson, Lauchlan McInnes IV, and stepdaughters Elaine Nixon and Lorraine Hirth.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, December 14, at 12:30 p.m. at St. Florence Catholic Church on Drummond Island. Father Sebastian Chacko will be the celebrant. Visitation will be at the church, beginning at 10 a.m.

Memorial donations can be directed to St. Florence Catholic Church.

Nellie Halcin

Nellie T. Halcin of DeTour Village was a teacher for most of her life, retiring from teaching in the classroom in 1978. Ms. Halcin was 93 when she died Friday, December 8, 2006, at Cedar Cove Assisted Living Facility in Cedarville.

She was born May 16, 1913, in DeTour Township, to Thomas John and Karoline Frances (nee Vida) Halcin.

In September 1932, Ms. Halcin began her career with a teaching certificate. She later earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Northern Michigan University in Marquette. She taught for 45 years, including six years in North Engadine, four years in Lakefield, and 35 years at DeTour Area Schools. Following retirement, she continued to teach friends and family members for the rest of her life.

Ms. Halcin was a member of Saint Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church in Goetzville. For many years, she served as a member of the Altar Society, as a Eucharistic minister, as a church council member, and as a sacristan. She was also a member of the Chippewa- Mackinac Retired School Personnel and the Raber Senior Citizens.

In 1975, Ms. Halcin and her sister, Magdalen, were honored by Saint Stanislaus Kostka Altar Society, and in 1983 they were named “Citizens of the Year” by the Raber AMVETS Auxiliary.

Ms. Halcin is survived by two nieces and their families, Helen Galarowic and MaryLu and Robert Gilbert; two nephews and their families, Vernon and Josephine Halcin and Angus and Mary Jo Halcin; her niece by marriage, Adeline Galarowic; four greatnieces and their families, Mary Lou and Joseph Stec, Annette and Jeffrey Rowinski, Carolyn and Paul Martin, and Diane Halcin; three great-nephews and their families, James and Michaeline Galarowic, Robert and Denise Galarowic, and Thomas Halcin, and many great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters, Suzanne, Maria, Mary, and Magdalen Halcin, and Mary Stark; seven brothers, John, Frank, Peter, Thomas, Andrew, Joseph, and Jacob Halcin, and a nephew, Lawrence Galarowic.

Visitation and prayers were Sunday, December 10, and Monday, December 11, at Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, December 11, at Saint Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church. Father Sebastian Chacko was the celebrant.

Spring burial will be at Saint Stanislaus Kostka Catholic cemetery in Goetzville.

Memorial donations can be made to Saint Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church, 12841 E. Traynor Road, Goetzville, Michigan 49736.

Robert Smith

Robert Smith, 90, of Cedarville, served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II and was an outdoorsman, carpenter, and boat builder. Mr. Smith died Tuesday, December 5, 2006, while staying at the home of his son and daughter in-law, Larry and Jackie Smith of Cedarville.

Mr. Smith was born May 28, 1916, in Rogers City to Ernest and Florence Smith. He married Marion Basel September 7, 1938, at St. Michael Church in Belnap. Until 1947, the couple lived in Coast Guard lighthouses throughout the upper Great Lakes. They settled in Rogers City, where Mr. Smith worked at the Michigan Limestone Corporation at the Calcite Plant.

In 1953, the couple moved to Cedarville while Mr. Smith worked during the construction of, and later in operations at, the Cedarville Limestone plant. He retired from Michigan Limestone in Cedarville in 1978.

Mr. Smith loved the outdoors, hunting, and fishing. He enjoyed boating, snowmobiling, and

airsledding. He played baseball and later enjoyed bowling. He also was an accomplished carpenter and boat builder, having built his first house and several boats. He and his wife enjoyed traveling to Texas and Florida.

He is survived by two sons and their families, Larry and Jackie Smith of Cedarville and David Smith of Cedarville, seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, a sister, Lois Bissette of Sandusky, and a brother and his family, John and Grace Smith of Ellenton, Florida.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife in 2002, a daughter, Sharon, in 1942, a daughter, Arleen Rood, in 1981, his father in 1957, his mother in 1979, three sisters, Ruth Pines, Vera Kniffen, and Rose Cuma, and two brothers, Charles Smith and Earl Smith.

A Coast Guard funeral will take place aboard the Cutter Mackinaw in the spring.

Ross Funeral Home of Pickford is assisting the family with arrangements.
