Age 82, passed away Friday, December 8, 2006 at home. The funeral service will be 11 -00 A.M. Thursday, December 14, 2006 at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Metropolitan Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be at the funeral home 6-9 P.M. Wednesday and from 10 -00 A.M. until time of service Thursday.

Powers, Bertie I.
Milan, MI
(formerly of Willis)

Age 88, passed away Friday, December 29, 2006 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. She was born October 14, 1918 in Aiken, IL, the daughter of John and Lavania (Reed) Lee. On August 27, 1938, she married Ellwood Powers in Angola, IN and he preceded her in death March 27, 1992. Bertie was a member of Lincoln Community United Methodist Church and retired from the Lincoln Community School district where she worked as a cafeteria worker. She was an active member of the Lincoln Golden Ages Senior Citizens Center. Survivors include- two daughters, Diane Platek of Westland and Patricia (Ron) Johnson of Milan; three sons, Dallas (Linda) Powers of Gwinn, MI, Paul Powers of Dexter and Mark Wells Powers of Ypsilanti; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one great great grandson; two brothers, John Lee of Petoskey and Clyde (Kay) Lee of FL; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, six sisters and two brothers. The funeral service will be 2-00 P.M. Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at Lincoln Community United Methodist Church, 9074 Whittaker Road, Ypsilanti with Pastor Beverly Marr officiating. Burial will follow in Highland cemetery. Contributions in her memory may be made to the church. Envelopes are available at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel where the family will receive friends 2-4 & 6-9 P.M. Monday and at the church from 10-00 A.M. until time of service Tuesday.

Reed, Bessie
London Twp., MI

Age 87 died December 26, 2006 at Heartland Health Care facility in Ann Arbor. She was born January 7, 1919 in Tchula, Mississippi. On January 3, 1937 she married Cambric Reed in Mississippi and he survives. She was a member of the London Seventh Day Adventist Church. Bessie worked for Monroe County as a social worker and drove many area citizens to Monroe County for family services. She later was employed with Whitehall Convalescent Center as a nurse’s aide retiring in 1979.
Mrs. Reed is survived by a daughter Nell (Lewis) Irby of London Twp., two sons Horace Reed of Detroit, Dero Reed of Milan, 12 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson.
She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Cambric “PeeWee” Irby, Horace “Billy” Reed and six brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 4-8pm at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home, Milan. A Family hour will be held on Friday at the London Seventh Day Adventist Church 10430 Tuttle Hill Rd. from 11-00am until noon with funeral services beginning at noon. Pastor Donald R. Rhodes, Russell
Ypsilanti, MI

Age 74, passed away Sunday, December 31, 2006 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. He was born March 4, 1932 in Stone, KY, the son of Hazel W. and Juanita (Mounts) Rhodes. On September 22, 1951, he married Betty Alexander in Ypsilanti and she survives. Russ attended the Willow Run Church of God (Victorious Life). He worked at Ford Motor Company for 33 years, retiring in 1985. He sang with the Southern Gospel Boys and loved all sports. In addition to his loving wife Betty of 55 years, survivors include- two daughters, Jean (Gary J.) Morgan of Ypsilanti and Janet (Dennis) Barnett of TX; three sons, Philip (Rhonda) of Canton, Stephen (Tamela) of Wayne and Russell Jr. of Ypsilanti; thirteen grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Shelby Jean (Robert) Alexander of Ypsilanti and Inagaye Rhodes of OH; three brothers, James, Cecil (JoAnn) and Blaine (JoAnn), all of Ypsilanti; and several nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. The funeral service will be 2-00 P.M. Thursday, January 4, 2007 at Victorious Life Church of God, 1405 Sweet Road, Ypsilanti. Burial will follow in Washtenong Memorial Park. Contributions in his memory may be made to Arbor Hospice. Envelopes are available at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel where the family will receive friends 6-9 P.M. Tuesday, 2-4 & 6-9 P.M. Wednesday and at the church from 1-00 P.M. until time of service Thursday.

Santeler, Jeanette “Mom Gorse”
Saline, MI

Age 86 passed away December 17, 2006 peacefully at home with her loving family & even Santa Clause by her side. She was born July 1, 1920 to Ernest & Anna (Tippreiter) Trapp. On April 3, 1943 she married Joseph A. Santeler in Chicago and he preceded her in death in 1976.
She is survived by her children Mario D. Kelly of Saline, Ronald (Donna) Kelly of Chicago, Barbara (Frank) Sinnett of Mystic, Shirley (Robert) Gorse of Saline, and Sharon Santeler of Toluca Lake, CA., seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, cousins and her sisters Pearl Fieck and Alice Pieske both of Chicago.
A wake will be held at 10-00am Wednesday at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Saline, 910 Austin Dr., followed by an 11-00am Mass of Celebration and Reception. Burial will take place Friday in Arlington, IL, where Joe and Jeanette will be reunited after 30 years to dance away eternity together. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Louis Center, Chelsea. Condolences may be sent to the family by signing the guestbook at www.ochalekstark.com.

Smetka, Mary
Milan, MI

Age 89 died Sunday morning December 3, 2006 at her son’s home where she has been since she became ill. She was born November 27, 1917 in Czechoslovakia to Anthony and Elizabeth (Tomecek) Koluch.
On May 4, 1940 she married Joseph Smetka in Toledo and he preceded her in death on February 21, 1992. They moved to Britton from Milan in 1956 where they farmed until Joe’s death then Mary moved back to Milan. She retired from the Chrysler Corporation in 1981.
Mary was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Milan, Czechoslovakian Society of America, American Bohemian Club, the Chrysler Retirees, Milan Women’s Club, Cone Extension Club, Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, the Milan Senior Citizens and enjoyed playing in the Milan Fun Band.
Survivors include two daughters; Elizabeth “Betty” Jean (Stanley) Sinn of San Jose, CA. and JoAnne (George) Benson of Klamath River, CA., two sons; Tom (Joan Check) Smetka of Milan and Rick (Pam Gose) Smetka of Phoenix, AZ., seven grandchildren; Rochelle, Jennifer, Traci, Branch, Michael, Tina and Shanna and two great- grandchildren; Rhiannon and Charlotte.
Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Antoinette “Toni” Korican.
Visitation will be held at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home, Milan on tonight (Mon) from 7-9pm and Tuesday from 2-5 and 7-9pm where the rosary will be prayed at 7-30PM. The Funeral Mass will be 11-00am Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Milan with Fr. Tom Brennan as celebrant. She will lie in state at the church on Wednesday from 10-00am until the time of service. Burial will follow in Marble Park cemetery, Milan. Those desiring may make contributions to the Immaculate Conception Altar Society or the Milan Senior Citizens. Condolences may be signed on line at www.ochalekstark.com.

Smith, Carolyn Ruth “Carole”
Saline, MI

Age 57, passed away Thursday, December 7, 2006 at 1 -00 A.M. after her ongoing battles with ovarian cancer. She was born April 25, 1949 in Ypsilanti, the daughter of Charles William and Virginia (Ford) Smith, who preceded her in death. Surviving Carolyn are the four lights of her life - her son, Richard and daughter-in-law, Shannon Isaacson and two grandsons, Jack Christopher and Will Venburg. She is also survived by - four brothers, William Smith of Lake Oswego, OR, Douglas (Bonnie) Smith of Littleton, CO, Donald (Julie) Smith of Lake Oswego, OR and John (Deb) Smith of DeWitt, MI; two sisters, Nancy (Lee Sr.) Capper of Cumberland, MD and Debra Carbaugh-Nickerson of NH; and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Carolyn taught school for the Ypsilanti Public Schools for 28 years, with 25 of those years being a kindergarten teacher at Perry Child Development Center. In her later career, she became a realtor and worked with Century 21 Brookshire. Carolyn was a traveler, going to Europe twice and visiting most all of the 50 states. She often traveled to Mexico and the Caribbean. Life was for the living, as Carolyn always showed those around her. She lived with energy, enthusiasm and excitement. She spread a great deal of love to others. She was active in her church, First United Methodist Church of Saline and enjoyed her many groups of friends from there, especially most recently the Cancer Support Group. Carolyn will be missed by all who know her. The memorial service will be 11 -00 A.M. Friday, January 5, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church of Saline, 1200 North Ann Arbor Street, Saline where the family will receive friends from 10 -00 A.M. until time of service. Contributions in her memory may be made to Arbor Hospice Residence, 2366 Oak Valley, Ann Arbor, MI 48108. Arrangements handled by STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel.

Stanton, Bernith Lou
Milan, MI

Age 80 died peacefully at home on December 29, 2006 with her family by her side after a lengthy battle with lung cancer. Lou was born on February 19, 1926 in Milan to Oscar O. and Alice (Fullerton) Berkley. She was a graduate of Milan High School. At the age of 40, she enrolled at Washtenaw Community College and received an Associates Degree. She later received a B.A. from Eastern Michigan University (1977), an M.S. from Eastern Michigan University (1981), and an M.S.W. from the University of Michigan (1985) with a Specialist’s Certificate in Gerontology. Lou proudly worked in various settings as a clinical social worker with older adults and with children with mental retardation. Her special loves included her family, antiques, music, folk arts, and rug hooking. She was especially proud to have received her pilot’s license in 1966 while working as an aircraft insurance underwriter. She was an active member of the People’s Presbyterian Church of Milan since joining in 1935 at the age of nine. She was elected to and served on the Milan Public Library Board for several years.
Lou is survived by Raymond B. Stanton, her loving and devoted husband of 61 years, her five children Jennifer Kreger of Howell, Jill (Ron) Morey of Milan, Mary (Rick) Fishwick of Chelsea, John (Renee) Stanton of Atlanta, GA, and Sarah Stanton (Jay Kukor) of Saline. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, honorary family member Donald Barnett, and many close and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Frederic Berkley, and a sister Shirley Niga.
A memorial worship service celebrating Lou Stanton’s life will be held at the People’s Presbyterian Church (210 Smith Avenue, Milan, Michigan) on Tuesday, January 2, beginning at 11-00am. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make memorial contributions to the People’s Presbyterian Church or the Milan Public Library.

Stoianowski, Daniel L.
Ocala, Florida

Age 67 died suddenly Friday, December 1, 2006 in Ocala, Florida. He was born September 23, 1939 in Monroe, Michigan to Daniel and Mary (Wojtowicz) Stoianowski, Sr. On December 30, 1988 he married his loving wife Yvonne Randall and she survives. Dan began his 45 years in the construction industry as a highly talented bricklayer. In 1966 he co-founded Willis Building Co., Inc. of Saline, retiring in 2001. He was an active member of the Board of Directors for Palm Cay in Ocala.
He believed in doing things right the first time and instilled that in his children and all that knew him. Dan was a loving and caring husband/father who always made his wife and children his top priority. He enjoyed working in the yard, bowling and had a great passion for watching football, as well as playing fantasy football. Dan will be greatly missed by his loving family and many friends.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, Michael (Laurie) of Saline and Matthew (Carleen) of Tecumseh, a daughter, Deborah Webber of Belleville, two step-daughters Kari (Jack) Bergers of Northville, Kristi Randall of Brooklyn, NY, a sister
Carolyn (Jim) Larkin of Belleville and five grandchildren Ryan, Scott, Nicole, Kallie and Griffin. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held at Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home, Milan on Monday from 2-5 and 7-9pm where funeral services will be on Tuesday at 11-00am with Fr. Nicholas Ritter officiating. Burial following at Marble Park cemetery.

Turner, Frances “Fritzi”
Ypsilanti, MI

Age 88, passed away Thursday, December 28, 2006. She was born July 22, 1918 in Bedford, IN, the daughter of Alfred and Philomena (Creed) Guthrie. She has been married to her loving husband, Clare, for 65 years. Other survivors include- one son, Jack; one daughter, Sharon (Sonny) Hicks; twelve grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one brother, Roy Guthrie; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Gerald and three sisters. The funeral service will be 1-00 P.M. Saturday, December 30, 2006 at STARK FUNERAL SERVICE Moore Memorial Chapel with Pastor Kent Jennings of Immanuel Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Whiteford Union cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10-00 A.M. until time of service Saturday.

Vanover, James “Jesse James”
Ypsilanti, MI

Age 34, passed away suddenly Friday, December 15, 2006 from an apparent heart attack. He was born June 12, 1972 in Howell, MI. James was the best guitar slinger most people have ever heard and he was admired throughout the world. He was voted “Michigan’s Best Lead Guitarist, ” which landed him a U.S.O. tour of Korea to entertain the troops. James was known throughout the area for his charity concerts. He started many bands and played and sang with others on tours everywhere he could go. He loved his music, family and friends and everyone loved him. He had a deep love for children. Survivors include- his mother and adoptive father, Naomi Jean Vanover and Danny Moses of Belcher, KY; his father and stepmother, Charles “Chuck” Vanover Jr. and Pam Vanover of Haveloc, NC; two sisters, Deejay Porter of Boon, MI and Tammy Vanover of NC; one brother, Robert Vanover of NC; his children, Codi Jean, age 12, Tequila Ann, age 10, Savanahan Jamie, age 6, and James Alan and Tracy Alexander, age 4; his girlfriend, Tammy Sullivan; grandparents, James and Debra Vanover of Ypsilanti; and many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family he handpicked himself. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Clarice Vanover. Contributions may be made to the family. Envelopes are available at 43620 Judd Road in Belleville where James will lie in state Tuesday, December 19 and Wednesday, December 20, 2006. The graveside service will be 11-00 A.M.
