Anna Badgley

A former owner of the Trout Lake resort known as Birch Lodge, Anna Badgley, 91, of Trout Lake died Thursday, December 7, 2006.

She was born in AuGres on September 29, 1915, to Harry and Ruth Frank.

Mrs. Badgley will be remembered by those who frequented Birch Lodge, which she and her husband, Cliff Badgley, owned. She remained involved in the business until early in 2006, when she broke her hip in a fall.

Family and friends say she had a fun-loving spirit and she will be remembered for giving to others and for treating everyone with fairness and respect.

Mrs. Badgley was preceded in death by her husband in 1951, her parents, brothers Buster and Leonard, and sister Dorothy Shupe.

She is survived by a sister and her family, Eleanor and Harold Duberville of AuGres, five nephews and their families, Dan Duberville, Randy and Elaine Duberville, Rick and Lynn Duberville, David and Veronica Badgley, and Jim and Sharon Frank, and two nieces and their families, Sherill Frank and Bonnie Hodge, and numerous great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry Friday, December 15, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Services will follow at 6 p.m. with Pastor Arthur Bode officiating. Interment will take place at Linwood cemetery in AuGres.

Archibald ‘Archie’ Feneley

A former member of the Garfield Township Fire Department, Archibald “Archie” Feneley, 69, of Engadine died Saturday, December 9, 2006, at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry.

He was born May 24, 1937, in Engadine to Burton and Mary (nee Webber) Feneley.

Mr. Feneley was a 1955 graduate of Engadine High School.

He served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1958 and continued in the Army Reserve until his honorable discharge on November 1, 1961.

He married Yvonne Kempf in Naubinway September 30, 1961, and the couple moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where Mr. Feneley was employed by U-Haul, Inc. for 15 years. In 1976, they moved back to Engadine, where he owned and operated Feneley Total. He also was employed at Perkins Wood Products. In later years, Mr. Feneley was employed by Garfield Township until his retirement.

He was a former member of the Garfield Township Fire Department and served as the dispatcher for the township fire and ambulance department.

His hobbies and interests included the outdoors, gardening, and casino gaming.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Burton Neil Feneley, a sister, M. Georgiana Krause, and his father and mother-in-law, Neil and Eva Kempf.

Survivors include his wife, Yvonne, of Engadine, three sons and their families, all of Engadine, Todd and Leslie, Jeff and Nikki, and Sean and Amber, a granddaughter, Alyssa, a brother and his family, Charles and Cynthia Feneley of Arizona, and a sister and her family, Nora and Dick Salter of Montrose, relatives and their families, Roger Kempf, Mary and Will Freeman, Dawn and Roger Berry, Joan and Ken Troyer, Flora and Larry McEvers, Gail and Bob Trammel, and Matt and Sharon Kempf, and many nieces and nephews.

At his request, no public services are scheduled. Inurnment will take place at the Engadine cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the Garfield Township Fire Department and Ambulance Corps.

Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry is assisting the family.

Edith Smith

Edith Smith, 90, of St. Ignace, who worked as a restaurant cook for many years, died Wednesday, December 6, 2006, at Mackinac Straits Hospital Long Term Care, where she had been a resident for several years.

She was born November 13, 1916, in Richmond to John and Nettie (nee Dolson) Closs. She was one of nine children.

She married Marvin Cecil Smith August 8, 1936, in St. Ignace, and lived in the area most of her life.

Mrs. Smith was a cook for St. Ignace restaurants including Vitek’s, The Cobblestone, and the Shores Restaurant. She was preceded in death by

her husband, who died May 12, 2003, and by siblings Edna, Agnes, Mary, Charles, Roy, Andrew, and Peter.

She is survived by her children and their families, Joy and Timothy Gulick of Portland, Richard and Constance Smith of St. Ignace, Eugene Smith of St. Ignace, Keith and Debora Smith of Carp Lake, a sister, Sadie Beth Hocking of Pontiac, 12 grandchildren, 19 greatgrandchildren, and three greatgreat grandchildren.

Services were held Saturday, December 9, at Dodson Funeral Home with the Reverend James Balfour of St. Ignace United Methodist Church officiating

Theodore Lebutzki

A veteran of the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy, Theodore Karl Lebutzki, 69, of Brevort died Monday, December 11, 2006, after suffering a heart attack at his home. Mr. Lebutzki was born in Toronto, Canada, February 1, 1937. He was a disabled American Veteran from the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He served more than 10 years in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army.

Grace Hough

Grace Pearl Hough, twomonth old daughter of Chuck and Cate Hough of Rudyard, died at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey Sunday, August 13, 2006.

She was born in Petoskey June 2, 2006.

Grace was precious and loved by all, family members said.

Grace is survived by her parents, Charles Dennis "Chuck" and Catherine Leigh "Cate" (nee Alderman) Hough; four brothers, Kyle, Jordon, Zachary, and John Hough; one sister, Michelle Hough; grandparents, Charles and Barb Alderman of Andover, Ohio, and Pearl Hough of Rudyard; and her great-grandmother, Ella McCowien. Also surviving are aunts and uncles, Sam and Wally Feole, Maggie Howland, Art and Rachelle Hough, Timothy

Alderman, Marie Alderman, Michael and Jill Holler, and Wendy and Sam Frush, who are also Grace's godparents.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Jim Hough; seven great-grandparents, Russell and Violet Hough, Lee and Bertha Johnson, Merle and Dorothy Alderman, and Robert McCowien; a great aunt, Edna Hough; and four great uncles, Ted, Joe, and David Johnson, and Terry Burdick.

Services were held Tuesday, August 15, at 11 a.m. at Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford with Pastor Stephen Peters of Rudyard Bible Church officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Burial will be next to her greatgrandparents at Kinross cemetery in Kinross Township.

Edward Coutu

Edward J. Coutu, 47, was a carpenter in the Engadine area who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He died Friday, August 11, 2006, at his home.

He was born January 13, 1959, in Newberry to Isadore and Edna (nee Mantey) Coutu. He was graduated from Engadine High School in 1977.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Shaina Coutu.

Mr. Coutu is survived by his son, Taven, of Pennsylvania, one granddaughter, and five siblings and their

families, Louis and Vicki of Tustin, Darlene and John Carwell of Grosse Pointe, Delores and Frank Grondzieleski of Detroit, Rebeca Matchinski and Harold Robinson III of Engadine, Sharon and Matthew Kemph of Engadine, and Rosemary and Darin Butkovich of Engadine.

A graveside memorial service will be Thursday, August 24, at 11 a.m. at the Bethlehem Lutheran cemetery in Engadine. Pastor Arthur Bode will officiate.

Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry is assisting the family.

Margot Foote

Margot R. Foote, 74, of St. Ignace, died Monday, August 14, 2006, at Mackinac Straits Hospital Long Term Care, following a long illness.

She was born June 22, 1932.

She is the wife of the Reverend Wayne Foote.

Visitation will be Thursday, August 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

at Glen Memorial Baptist Church in St. Ignace. A memorial service will follow at 1:30 p.m.

Agraveside service will be held Friday, August 18, at 9 a.m. at Lakeside cemetery in St. Ignace.

Betty Ann Brown

Betty Ann Brown, 69, was a homemaker and an employee at the Tahquamenon Area Schools from 1971 to 1979, where she worked as an aide under the Title IV American Indian Education program. She provided academic support for Native American students as well as counseling and family services.

Mrs. Brown died Friday evening, August 11, 2006, surrounded by her family. She was under the care of North Woods Hospice.

She was born in Detroit September 20, 1936, to George and Elizabeth (nee DeSilva) Justice.

She was graduated from Redford Township High School in 1954. She married Ron Brown May 14, 1955, and moved to Newberry in 1956. For the past 17 years, Mr. and Mrs. Brown have spent their winters in Tucson, Arizona.

Over the years, Mrs. Brown's hobbies included crocheting, stained glass projects, oil painting,

bead work, hiking, board games, crossword puzzles, berry picking, swimming, playing bridge in many clubs, and casino gaming.

Mrs. Brown was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newberry and volunteered her talents as a seamstress for community musical theater and ice shows in the 1970s. She also chaired the local 4-H sewing club. She and her husband served as foster parents in the 1960s and 1970s.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years; five children and their families, Cherie and Dewey Wilder of Garnet, Charlotte Mikuska of St. Ignace, Carolyn Brown of Lake Linden, Clifford and Loretta Brown of Little Lake, and Curt Brown of Newberry; 16 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 17, at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Newberry with Pastor Nancy Barkat officiating.

Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry is assisting the family.

Charles Currie

Charles LeRoy Currie of Duluth, Minnesota, was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and took great pride in the Native American culture. He enjoyed attending Native American gatherings, pow-wows, and tribal celebrations. Mr. Currie was 29 when he died Friday, April 13, 2007, at his family's home in Hessel.

James Charles

James Milton Charles, 72, of DeTour, was a U.S. Air Force veteran who held leadership posts in several civic organizations in DeTour and Clark Township. Mr. Charles passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at his home. He was born August 5, 1934, in Sault Ste. Marie, to Milton Shaner and Esme Kathleen (nee Chestle) Charles.

Ruth Calhoun

Ruth LaChapelle (nee Peach) Calhoun, 88, of Hickory Corners, died at her home Saturday, March 31, 2007. She was born March 11, 1919 in St. Ignace and was graduated from Bay City Central High School in Bay City in 1937 and attended junior college there, majoring in arts and home economics.

Robert Closs

Robert F. Closs, 55, of St. Ignace, died Saturday, April 14, 2007, of cancer at Cheboygan Memorial Hospital. He was born February 3, 1952, in St. Ignace to Ross and Minerva (nee LaDuke) Closs. He married Nancy Rickley December 14, 1971. Mr. Closs managed the Bay View Motel in St. Ignace.

Leda Quigley

Leda Genevieve Quigley, 81, formerly of Sault Ste. Marie, worked as a translator before teaching for 30 years at Sault Area High School. Mrs. Quigley died Friday, April 6, 2007, at Hope Hospice of Cape Coral, Florida. She was born to Michael and Patricia Alboschy in Sault Ste. Marie.

Randy Malaska

Randy Eino Malaska, 50, of Rudyard, died Saturday, April 14, 2007. He was born November 21, 1956, in Sault Ste. Marie to Eino R. and Sylvia I. (nee Koivisto) Malaska. Mr. Malaska grew up in Rudyard and was graduated from Rudyard High School in 1974. He earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Lake Superior State College in Sault Ste. Marie.

Dennis 'Dody' Schaefer

Dennis "Dody" Schaefer of Gladstone formerly lived in Sault Ste. Marie, where he worked on the Poe Lock at the Soo Locks for seven years. In 1968, he brought his family to the Escanaba area to work on the construction of Mead Paper Company. Mr. Schaefer was employed by Laborers Construction Local 1329 for most of his working life, as a business agent. Mr. Schaefer was 65 when he died peacefully at his home September 16, 2007, surrounded by his family.

He was born September 29, 1941, in Sault Ste. Marie, to Philip Doty and Edna (nee Therrian) Schaefer. He attended the Ursuline Academy and LaSalle High School in St. Ignace.

He married Diann Little of Pickford July 10, 1961.

Mr. Schaefer was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Flat Rock, the Laborers¿ Union Local 1329, Past President from 1981 to 1985 of the Wells Lions Club, co-founder of the Trades and Labor Food Bank from 1981 to 1990, served four years on the Michigan State Social Services Board, and was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

His last four years of employment were as business manager before he retired July 1999. Mr. Schaefer loved his job, friends said, and received great pleasure from being able to help people.

He and his wife spent their winters in Lady Lake, Florida. Mr. Schaefer loved playing cards, traveling, golfing with his wife and friends, and visiting casinos.

Mr. Schaefer is survived by his wife, Diann; four daughters and their families, Jodi and Andrew Kippe, of Parkland, Florida, Dana and Fernando Gomez of Holland, Holly and David Cvengros of Traverse City, and Michele and Craig Steflof Appleton, Wisconsin; five grandchildren, Alexander Kippe, Lauren and Olivia Cvengros, and Kyle and Cole Stefl; a sister, Anita Marshall of St. Ignace, and many nieces and nephews.

The family of Mr. Schaefer will receive friends Wednesday, September 19, at Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Family Catholic Church in Flat Rock Thursday, September 20, at 12:30 p.m.

The Reverend Father Jose Maramattan will officiate. A luncheon will follow at Holy Family Catholic Church.

The family requests all memorial donations be given to the family, so they can distribute donations to the charities of their choice.
