McELWEE -- John P. McElwee, 67 of Michigan City, IN, formerly of Wayland died Friday, Feb 22, 2002. He will be sadly missed by his wife Pat (Fein); sons Brian and Patty, Christopher & Chris; daughters Colleen and Kevin Ulam and Michelle McElwee of IN, and ten grandchildren; brothers Jim & JoAnn of Grand Rapids, Jack of Jenison. Sisters, Mrs. Robert Packard (Wanda) of Hastings, Joan McElwee of Wayland and Pat McElwee of Allegan. Services were held Tues, Feb 26, Queen of All St. Church, Michigan City, IN, burial at St. Stanislaus, Michigan City, IN.

MILLER -- Judith Erle Nicolai Miller, 61 of 1114 Riva Ridge, Danville, Kentucky, died Friday, February 15, 2002 in Danville. Born May 5, 1940 in Allegan, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late Robert John Nicolai, and Bernadatte Satterlee Nicolai of Danville, Kentucky. Judy was a former owner and operator of Thoroughbred Car Wash in Danville, as well as a substitute teacher with the Boyle County School System. A graduate of the University of Kentucky, earning a bachelors degree in elementary and secondary education. Being very active in her community, Judy was former manager of the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center Gift Shoppe, a volunteer with the Hospital Auxiliary, a member of the Women's Book Club and Recipe Club, also a member of several bridge clubs, and the Water Aerobics Club at the Ephraim McDowell Wellness Center. Additional survivors include, her husband, Colbert (Cole) Miller of Danville; two daughters, Jennifer Nicole Buss of Naperville, Illinois, and Melissa Lizabeth Mangold of Lexington, Kentucky; and one brother, Jack Nicolai, of South Lake, Texas. Also surviving are four grandchildren. A memorial service was held Friday, February 22, 2002, at Wilder Funeral Home in Perryville, Kentucky by Dr. Norman Hagley. The family wishes expressions of sympathy to take the form of donations to the American Cancer Society.

SLIWOSKI -- Thomas S. Sliwoski, Fawn Lake, Shelbyville. Tom went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, February 16, 2002 at his home under the loving care of his family, friends and Borgess Visiting Nurse & Hospice. His life began March 12, 1932 in Chicago, IL a son of Steve and Estelle "Sally" (Janicki) Sliwoski. When Tom was a senior in high school, his family moved to a farm in rural Fennville. After high school, he attended Western Michigan University and later was stationed for two years at Camp Gordon, Georgia where he served in the Army at the time of the Korean Conflict. Following the service, Tom returned to the area. On January 17, 1970 he married the former Janet Kay Hoyt and they made their home at Fawn Lake ever since. He was employed as a medical electronics technician at Borgess Medical Center for 25 years retiring in 1994. Tom has been a long time member of Orangeville Baptist Church where he served as treasurer and for 9 years co-produced the outdoor Live Nativity. Tom was an avid reader and has always been ambitious. Whether it be working around the home he loved, at church or quietly helping others; he always kept busy. Tom as an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and walking. For the past several years Tom and Jan have been members of Big Sable Point Lighthouse Keepers Association near Ludington where they have been lighthouse keepers four times. Tom loved giving tours and sharing his knowledge of the lighthouse. Tom and Jan also enjoyed traveling and have wintered 10 years at Siesta Key in Florida. Another highlight of their life was hosting foreign exchange students from Finland. Tom dearly loved his family. They include his wife Jan; two sons Richard Sliwoski and Mark (Cheryl) Sliwoski; two daughters Sally Sliwoski and Valerie (David) Jasperson; a sister Louise Krogel; two brothers Robert and William Sliwoski; eleven grandchildren; many Sliwoski and Hoyt nieces and nephews; aunts, uncles, cousins; special friends Robert Wellington and Durrell McKenzie; caring neighbors, church family and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents and a son John VanDussen. A service to celebrate his life and faith was held Tuesday at Orangeville Baptist Church with Pastor Dan Bowman leading the service. Burial was at Oak Hill cemetery, Orangeville. Memorials are suggested to Big Sable Point Lighthouse Keepers Association or Rural Bible Mission. Arrangements by Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren Funeral Home, Plainwell Chapel.

WUIS -- Weldon "Bud" Wuis, Monterey Twp., Allegan, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002 at his home. Mr. Wuis was born Jan. 15, 1919 in Monterey Center, the son of Cornelius and Minnie (Berens) Wuis. Surviving are 6 daughters and their spouses, Evelyn and Albert Green and Patricia and Raymond Warner, all of Allegan, Jane and Roger Simpson and Nancy and Harley Schut, all of Hopkins, Kathleen "Kate" and Milton Johnson of Allegan and Cindy and Tom Walburn of Indiana; 20 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson; 2 sisters, Jo Wilson of Allegan and Elsie Strandberg of Grand Rapids; sister-in-law, Jane Haley of New Mexico; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie; 2 sons, John and David; a grandson, Jack; great granddaughter, Emily; and 3 sisters, Rene Avery, Lelah Wynne and Elizabeth Bombard. Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 21, at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel, Pastor Kenneth Reeves and Comer Skinner officiated. Interment Poplar Hill cemetery, Monterey Twp. Memorial contributions may be made to the Monterey Center United Methodist Church.

ALLEN -- Patsy (Genther) Allen, aged 64, of Manistee, was taken home by her Lord & Savior Jesus Christ on February 10, 2002. She lived in Grand Rapids 59 years. Surviving are husband, Donald; sons, Eric (Tina) Allen of Flint, Ethan (Cheryl) Allen of Grand Haven; two grandchildren, Christian & Adria; four brothers, Larry Genther of Grand Rapids, Ronny Genther of Delton, Jerry Genther of Grand Rapids & Danny Genther of Gun Lake; two sisters, Emily Gummal of Cedar Springs & Marie Duryea of Portage; also many nieces & nephews. Patsy was a member of Prince of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Traverse City. Funeral & Committal Services were 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4201 Burlingame S.W. in Wyoming with Pastor Brent Brutlag officiating. Interment at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association. Arrangements by Archer, Hampel & Kubiak, Dorr Chapel.

WILLIAMS -- Irene C. Williams 85, of Midland died Wednesday afternoon, February 13, 2002, at MidMichigan Medical Center, Midland. She was born August 17, 1916 in Allegan, the daughter of the late Claire and Pearl (Hall) Culver. Irene earned her Bachelors of Science in education from Western Michigan University, and had been a fifth grade teacher for Wayland Union Schools. In 1942, she married Ralph P. Williams in Bryon, Ohio. They lived in the Wayland area until coming to Midland in 1991. In addition to her husband, Irene is survived by her son, David R. Williams, and his children, Marsha K. Williams, Michael D. (Tonya) Williams, and Michelle L. Williams, all of Midland, and their mother, Karen Lalk also of Midland, and a great granddaughter Katie. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday at Elmwood cemetery in Wayland, Michigan. Irene's family will receive friends at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler Street, Midland on Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the charity of one's choice.

MICKEL -- Evelyn Swain Mickel, aged 80, of Gun Lake passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2002. She is survived by her son, Jim (Linda) Mickel; grandchildren, Jody Lynn Mickel, Chad Ryan Mickel, Brian James Mickel, Anne C. Mickel, Danielle Lynn Reynolds, Matthew Timothy Reynolds, Michael Todd Reynolds; great grandchild, Jacob Ryan Mickel; brother, James Wilton Swain. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Mickel, in 1994. There will be no funeral service. Cremains will be interred in Elmwood cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends 3:00-5:00pm Saturday, February 16, 2002, at the funeral home. Arrangements by Archer, Hampel & Kubiak, Wayland Chapel.

SENNEKER -- Todd R. Senneker, aged 20, of Leighton Twp., went to be with his Lord following accidental injuries, Friday, February 1, 2002. He is survived by his parents, Terry and Marcia; brother Terry R.; grandparents Ann and Lloyd Mitz and Gertrude Senneker; uncles and aunts, Ruth (Frank) Riviello, Robert (Pat) Senneker, Jim (Jan) Senneker, Josephine Cooper, Sherry (Grant) Marshall, Tom Senneker, Raymond "Pete" (Sherry) Senneker, Larry and Helen Orange, Bob and Nancy Cogbill; also many cousins. Funeral Services were held 11:00a.m. Wednesday at Moline Christian Reformed Church, Pastor Smalla officiating. Interment Hooker cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Todd R Senneker Scholarship Fund at Wayland Union High School. Arrangements by Archer, Hampel & Kubiak, Dorr Chapel

GARRETT -- Chad M. Garrett, aged 15, of Yankee Springs Twp., passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2002, following a long history of heart ailments. He is survived by his parents, Jeff and Lisa Garrett; grandparents, Paul & Adeline Boysen; aunts & uncles, Paul D. & Peg Boysen, Sue Standish, Kris & Deb Boysen, Roger & Kim Boysen; cousins, Shawn & Stacy Standish, Steven Boysen, Angela Boysen; also many other cousins and close friends. Chad was a student at Wayland Union High School. Funeral Services were held 11:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Therese Church in Wayland with Rev. Daniel Hoffman officiating. Cremation will follow. Memorials may be made to Wayland Athletic Boosters Club. Arrangements by Archer, Hampel & Kubiak, Wayland Chapel.

JAKWAY -- Mrs. Georgine P. Jakway, of Shelbyville, MI, passed away January 29, 2002, at her home at Gun Lake, with her family at her side. Mrs. Jakway was born in Pittsford Township, Michigan, on March 7, 1913, the daughter of Bert G. and Bertha M. (Weed) Scott. She was a former employee of Sealtest Ice Cream and the Market Basket in Kalamazoo. In 1973, she and her husband built their home on Gun Lake, having moved from Kalamazoo. Mrs. Jakway enjoyed playing solitaire, traveling, wintering in Venice, Florida, and she loved the color purple. She and her husband were former members of the Gun Lake Snowmobile Club, the Kalamazoo and Hastings Moose Lodges. She is survived by her husband Harold, whom she married on June 2, 1934 in Detroit, Michigan, a son and daughter-in-law Jack and Phyllis Jakway of Battle Creek, a daughter and son-in-law Sharon and Don Spencer of Cape Coral, Florida; grandchildren: Scott Spencer, Danny (Mary) Spencer, Chris (Cheri) Jakway and Kevin Jakway; great grandchildren Joshua and Cameron Spencer, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Jakway was preceded in death by her twin brother George and a brother Richard and a sister Doris Johnson. The family received visitors Friday, February 1, 2002, 10:00am until time of Memorial Service at 11:00am, at the Williams-Gores Funeral Home, Delton, Rev. Robert E. Cosby, officiating. Memorial contributions to Heartland Hospice Services would be appreciated.

MORASKI -- Mildred E. Moraski of Hilliards died Friday, January 25, 2002 at Maplewood of Sandy Creek in Wayland. Mrs. Moraski was born December 31, 1913 in Hilliards, the daughter of Lawrence & Constance (Cieslewitz) Adamczyk. She was a life member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Hilliards, a member of the Altar Society and past president, she also owned & operated the Hilliards General Store with her husband Leo who preceded her in death in 1956. Surviving are 3 children & their spouses; Janice & Bob Hilaski of Hilliards, Ruth & Jim Hazen and Elaine & Jack Hazen all of Hopkins, 9 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 1 sister-in-law, Helen Jablonski of Wayland, several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her brother Joseph and 3 sisters, Rose, Helen and Tecla. The family received friends on Monday with the rosary being recited at 6pm at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Hopkins Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial was Celebrated on Tuesday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Hilliards, Rev. Fr Jim Vinh Le Celebrant. Interment at the Church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the St. Stanislaus School or the Wings of Hope Hospice.

ROUGH -- John Rough VII, aged 18, of Wayland Township, went to be with his Lord, following accidental injuries, Saturday, January 26th, 2002. He is survived by his parents, John & Susie Rough VI; Catherine (Cathy) & Mark Jager; siblings, Brandon, Sam, Maggie, Brittany & William; grandparents, John & Linda Rough; Nancy & Roger Alvarez; Michael & Yvonne O'Brien; great-grandfather, John Rough; great-grandmother, Helen McClellan; several aunts, uncles and close friends. John loved football, tennis, track, fishing and hunting and driving around and listening to his stereo and visiting people. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday at the United Church of Wayland with Pastor Nancy Zerban officiating. Interment Elmwood cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Wayland Athletic Booster Club. Arrangements by Archer, Hampel & Kubiak, Wayland Chapel.

STAFFORD -- Ruth E. Stafford, Plainwell. Ruth's life began November 8, 1916 in Sylvania, Ohio the daughter of the late Mid and Laura LaFountain, and she lived in this area most of her life. Her family includes her three children and their spouses, Mary and Ted Minshall of Plainwell, Maureen & Richard Slider of Allegan, Cynthia & Ron Truax of Hopkins, 3 sisters, 1 brother, 7 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Ruth died Thursday January 24, 2002 in Plainwell and was preceded in death by her daughter Nancy Papineau and several brothers and sisters. Friends called at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home, Plainwell Chapel, where a Celebration of Life Service was held Monday 11 am. Burial followed in the family plot in South Martin cemetery.

VAN DAM - GEORGE (Bezemek) Sharon VanDam, Wyoming, MI. passed away 12:53a.m., February 1, 2002. Survived by her mother Betty Jane Bezemek, father James Bezemek deceased. Survived by her children Marie VanDam (Wayne Paul VanDam), Mark VanDam; her husband, Gary George; brother, Robert Bezemek (Karen) and many nieces & nephews. Joyce Bezemek, Richard Bezemek (Becky); sister Tina Bezemek (Doug Cunningham). Funeral arrangements pending, will be posted in the Grand Rapids Press, Thursday, February 7, 2002 for services.
