OPPERMAN -- Floyd Edgar Opperman Jr. Born June 18th, 1949, ended his battle with cancer and passed on October 11, 2001. Leaving behind his wife, Gilma Theresa Opperman of Gun Lake MI. His parents, Floyd Sr and Barbara Opperman of Dearborn Hts MI, and Carolyn Keech of Shelbyville MI. His grandparents, Louella Pashby of Dearborn MI; and George and Amelia Gillett of Gun Lake, MI. His children, Jamie Miller of Westland MI, Jeff and Mary Opperman of Westland MI, Floyd Edgar Opperman III of Dearborn Hts MI, Michael Kurtz of Taylor MI, Bobby Jo Kurtz of Taylor MI, Jana Kurtz of Delton MI; and grandchildren Haley and Amanda Opperman, also, from Westland MI. In passing Ed leaves brothers, Larry Opperman of Fowlerville MI, Jeff and Connie Opperman of Dearborn Hts MI, John Opperman of Dearborn Hts MI; and sister Katie and brother-in-law Bob Pasciolla of Dearborn Hts. Ed's family includes brother and sister-in-laws: David and Kathy LaFountain of Delton MI, David and Rosemary Mercer of Delton, Rhonda and Bob Grey/Miller of Navarre FL, Patrick and Carol Miller of Wayland MI. Ed leaves many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles and a lifetime of friendships and fond memories. As a family we entrust him to God's care. As a family we mourn our loss. Funeral Services were held Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Nancy Zerban officiating. Interment in Oak Hill cemetery, Orangeville Twp. SCHAENDORF -- Norma J. Schaendorf (Hilaski), aged 56, of Dorr, passed away Friday, October 12, 2001, following a courageous battle with cancer. Norma was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She is survived by her husband, and best friend of 38 years, Bill; son, Jim (Lisa) Schaendorf; daughter Debbie (Ken) Schafer; grandchildren, Cody, Morgan, Ashley and Tyler; mother, Edna Hilaski; father, Ray Hilaski; brothers, Bob (Janice) Hilaski, Leon (Cheryl) Hilaski, David Hilaski; sister, Dorothy (Jim) Dever; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob (Linda) Schaendorf, Arlene (Frank) Blank; special friends, Dee Longstreet, Rita Huver, Sandy Halloran. Norma was a former agent with Buehler Realty of Byron Center. Parish Rosary was held Monday at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday, October 16, 2001 at St. Mary's Visitation Church, New Salem with Fr. Richard Altine as celebrant. Interment Visitation cemetery, North Dorr. STEEL -- Randy J Steele, age 45, of Hastings, MI, died Sunday, Oct 14, 2001 at the Bronson Methodist Hospital. Randy was born Aug 31, 1956 in Grand Rapids, the son of James and Dorothy (Almy) Steele. Surviving are 2 brothers, Robert James Steele of Dorr and Richard John and Ruth Steele of New Mexico; 3 sisters, Esther Jean Selby of Dorr, Ruth Elaine and Arden Adams of Hastings and Sally Irene Kipen of Hopkins; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers, Marvin, Lewis and Fred. The family met with friends Tuesday evening at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Hopkins Chapel, where funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct 17, Pastor Janet Allen officiated. Interment Poplar Hill cemetery, Monterey Twp. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Assoc. or the American Diabetes Assoc.

HEPPE -- Orval M. Heppe, aged 80, of Hopkins Twp., passed away Monday, October 8, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Hazel; children, Joe (Sue) Heppe, Phyllis (Dale) Rankens, Dan (Evie) Heppe, Donna (Wade) Clawson, Mike (Linda) Heppe, Scott (Janie) Heppe; 19 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; two sisters, Alta Andres and Lorna Ehlert. Mr. Heppe was preceded in death by granddaughter, Shannon in 1994 and his parents, George & Agnes Heppe. Orval was a six year World War II US Navy Veteran aboard the U.S.S. Santa Fe and U.S.S. Richmond. Funeral Services were held Thursday at the Dorr funeral home with Pastor George Grevenstuk officiating. Interment Maplewood cemetery. Memorials may be made to American Diabetes Assoc. JANSEN -- Vernon John Jansen, of Ann Arbor, age 77, passed away October 3, 2001. Vern was born in a patriotic manner on July 4, 1924 in Waterloo, IL the son of John & Lydia Jansen. In 1943, at the brink of manhood, he stepped forward to defend his country. He served in the Navy as a Boater Machinist Mate 1st class on PT - 155, Squadron 9 in the South Pacific Theatre; Solomon Islands, New Guinea and the Philippines. Upon his return he entered Tri-State University in Angola, Indiana. In 1952, he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Vern continued his service to country throughout his professional life. Soon after college, he worked for McDonnell Aircraft Corporation in St. Louis, MO. He later brought his family to Ann Arbor to begin a 30 year career with Bendix / Allied Signal, working on aerospace and defense projects, including the TALOS missile project for the Navy. In addition, he was involved in all aspects of Mira-Lu Pets, the family business. Vernon worshipped and serviced at St. Francis of Assisi parish in Ann Arbor. Deeply devoted to his family and country Vern is survived by his mother, Lydia Jansen; his wife Ira; son, Luke; daughter, Mira (Mike) Cucci; grandchildren, Lucas, Emma and Sophie Cucci; and his sister, Laverne Elliston. The family received friends at the NIE Funeral Home, Ann Arbor, where a Scripture Service was held on Friday. On Saturday, October 6 visitation was held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church until Mass at 10 am. Burial of Cremains will take place at a later date at the St. Francis of Assisi Memorial Garden.

MAMAGONA -- LAURA

Laura Mamagona, aged 79, of Wayland, passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2001. She is survived by her daughter, June (Richard) Fletcher; son, David (Sherri) Mamagona Jr.; spouse, David Mamagona; sisters, Mary Church, Phoebe Hall & Jennie Pigeon; sister-in-law, Gladys Church; grandsons, Matthew Fletcher, Zeke Fletcher, Peter Mamagona, David T. Mamagona; also she will be missed by many favorite nephews, nieces & friends. Brothers and sister who walked on before her are Joseph Stevens, Robert Pokagon, Lucy Rose & Andrew Stevens. Laura was one of the first Practical Nurses in Michigan. She believed in helping others and did this as a Nurse most of her life. Funeral Services were 2:00p.m. Saturday at Wayland United Methodist Church with Pastor Casey Church officiating. Interment Burnips cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Salem Indian United Methodist Church, Wayland High School Education fund or Wayland United Methodist Church Memorial Fund. Arrangements by Archer, Hampel & Kubiak, Wayland Chapel.

MONTALVO -- Katrina Lynn Montalvo went to be with Jesus Oct 5. She is survived by her parentsTrinidad & Michelle Montalvo; 6 brothers & sisters; grandparents Mr & Mrs Trinidad Montalvo and Mr & Mrs Harry VanLonkhuyzen. "With a tiny whisper, you entered the world; and with a great song, you entered heaven."

PEPPER -- Merland Pepper, aged 87, of Moline, went to be with his Lord, Thursday, October 4, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lillian; son, Lee (Kaye) Pepper; daughters, Phyllis (Rev. Mel) Hatcher, Marlene (Arnold) Groeneveld, Charlotte (Dr. Louis) Terpstra; 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; sister, Fern Doyle and special friend, Al Gruscinski. Merland was a former Fire Chief of Dorr/Leighton Township Fire Department for 36 years. He was a member of the Moline School Board for 12 years. Mr. Pepper was former co-owner of Moline Meat Locker and was a Dorr Rural Mail Carrier & Postmaster in Moline. Funeral Services were held Tuesday at Moline Baptist Church with Pastor Jeff Smalla officiating. Interment Hooker cemetery. Memorials may be made to Moline Baptist Church or Wayland Area Ambulance. BENEDICT -- Willard L. Benedict, aged 67, of Wayland, passed away unexpectedly at home, Wednesday, October 3, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Donna; mother, Eunice Benedict; brothers, Norman (Alice) Benedict, David (Sherry) Benedict; also several nieces and nephews. Willard was a 1951 Wayland High Graduate. He received a private pilots license in 1954 at 20 years of age. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and member of Michigan Air National Guard from 1966-1969. Mr. Benedict was a former manager of the Wayland Airport and was retired from Lear-Siegler. Military Graveside Service under the Auspices of Wayland VFW Post 7581 will be held Friday, October 12 at Elmwood cemetery. Cremation will take place. FIFELSKI -- Francis "Frank" Fifelski, aged 86, of Wayland, passed away Tuesday, October 2, 2001. He is survived by his children, Francis Fifelski, Jr., Adrianne Powers; grandchildren, Frank Fifelski III, Julie Beth Fifelski; brothers, Walter (Marilyn) Fifelski, Steve (Lucy) Fifelski. Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, in 1999. Scripture Services were held Friday at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday at St. Stanislaus Church with Fr James Vinh Le as celebrant. Interment at St. Stanislaus cemetery. Arrangements by Archer, Hampel & Kubiak, Wayland Chapel.

KACZANOWSKI -- Gerald "Jerry" Kaczanowski, aged 63, of Wayland, passed away unexpectedly, Friday, September 28, 2001. He is survived by his children, Robert Kaczanowski, Susan Laycock, Beth (Clyde) Lewis; grandchildren, Robert, Sarah, Marlee, Drew; brother, James (Mary) Kaczanowski; sister, Barbara Kaczanowski; also Gloria Kaczanowski; godson, Craig Kaczanowski. Jerry was preceded in death by son-in-law, Richard Laycock. He was retired from Spartan Stores after 38 years of service. Hilliards K of C Council 4036 prayed the rosary, Sunday at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday at St. Therese Church with Fr. Gary Pamment as celebrant. Interment St. Stanislaus cemetery. Memorials may be made to Wayland Area Ambulance. LIECHTI -- Juanita G. Liechti, of Allegan, died Sunday, September 30, 2001 at Rose Arbor in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Liechti was born September 2, 1914 in Dorr, Michigan, the daughter of Herman & Lizzie (Kromberg) Commans. She was a graduate of Hopkins High School and Western Michigan University. She taught school at South Monterey Country School., Blackman and North Ward before retiring in 1977 after 30 years of teaching. Surviving are 3 children, Judy Wynne of Ann Arbor, Elaine & Rod Yarling of Chicago and Peggy Liechti of Allegan; 6 grandchildren, Mark, Scott, September, Edwin, Matthew and Zachary; 1 great grandson, Ethan; 1 brother, Howard Commans of Dorr; 2 sisters, Viola Connor of Hopkins and Evelyn & Dale Miller of Allegan; several nieces, nephews & cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice; 1 brother, Fred Commans and 2 sisters, Pearl McDermott and Goldie Miner. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct 3, at the Allegan Wesleyan Church. Pastor Mark Schlechty officiated. Interment Oakwood cemetery, Allegan. Memorials may be made to the Wesleyan Church. Arrangements by Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel.

MANN (SINKE) -- Betty L. Mann, aged 80, of Dorr, went home to be with her Lord, following a courageous battle with cancer on Monday morning, October 1, 2001. She will be sadly missed by her husband, Donald; her children, Robert (Brenda) Sinke, William (Sandra) Sinke, Patricia (Randy) Rairigh, Becky (Jim) Paul; also ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Betty was a licensed Registered Nurse & Nursing Home Administrator. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold in 1991. Funeral Services were held Thursday at Berean Bible Church of Byron Center with Pastor John Lowder officiating. Interment in Dorr cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Society or Grace Ministry Inc. Arrangements by Archer, Hampel & Kubiak, Wayland Chapel

SWARTOUT -- Robert J. Swartout, aged 63, of Wayland, passed away at home, Thursday, September 20, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Linda; children, Robert (Ann) Swartout, Jill (Michael) Dominiak, Lora (Claude) Cronin, Tammy (Robert) Gehl, Matt (Stacy) Johnson, Mark Johnson; grandchildren, Andrea, Taylor, Chelsea, Jeremiah, Colt, Elli; brother, William and Mary Swartout; mother-in-law, Thelma Gee; nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law and his faithful dog, Comet. Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Connie in 1994, and his mother, Mary Margaret. Bob was a long time member of Yankee Springs Golf Course, served three terms on Wayland City Council, coached Rocket Football and served on Economic Development Planner for Burt Lake Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Inc. Scripture Services were held Sunday at the funeral home, Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday at St. Therese Church with Fr. Gary Pamment as celebrant. Interment Elmwood cemetery. Memorials may be made to Wayland Area Ambulance or charity of your choice. Arrangements by Archer, Hampel & Kubiak, Wayland Chapel
