MEDENDORP -- Reka Medendorp, aged 87, of Wayland, passed away peacefully at Laurels of Sandy Creek, Thursday, February 22, 2001. She is survived by her children, Albert (Linda) Medendorp, Jennie Gale (Richard) Jameson, Karen (Roland) Zwerger, Raymond Medendorp Jr., Hilbert (Regenia) Medendorp, Cornelius (Gloria) Medendorp; eleven grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; also one sister, Bertha Lynema. Reka was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond; daughter, Evelyn Culver. Funeral Service was held Monday at Dorr Christian Reformed Church with Pastor Mark Scheffers officiating. Interment E. Martin cemetery. Memorials may be made to Forgotten Man Ministry or Annetta Jansen Ministry. Arrangements by Archer, Hampel & Kubiak, Wayland Chapel.

VANVOLKINBURG -- Dora VanVolkinburg, aged 65, of Wayland Twp., passed away Monday, February 12, 2001. She is survived by her spouse of 40 years, Larry; children, Billy (Nancy) Gifford, Linda Doreen (Gordon) Redding, Susan (James) Baker, Shirley VanVolkinburg, Tammy (Mike) Smith; 8 grandchildren, Seth, Andrew, Rebekah, Hillary, Kurtis, Alan, Ryan, Mindi; brothers & sisters, Virgil Webster, Art Webster, Mary Slayden, Lou Mahan; several nieces and nephews. Funeral and Committal Service was held Friday at First Baptist Church of Wayland with her nephew, Pastor Linzy Slayden Jr. officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. Arrangements by Archer, Hampel & Kubiak, Wayland Chapel.

BARTELL -- Terry Bartell Jr., aged 21, of Gun Lake, passed away Saturday, February 3, 2001. He is survived by his parents, Terry & Donna Bartell; sister, Dawn (Michael) Anderson; brother, Tom Bartell & fiancee Tracey Murphy; grandmothers, Emelda Bartell & Mary Ann Gamble; nieces, Cassandra Bartell, Amber, Autumn & Brooke Anderson; nephew, Michael Anderson; uncle Michael Bartell & several other aunts & uncles; also his girlfriend, Janice Ross & many special friends. Terry was preceded in death by his grandparents, Al & Rose Stora & Tom Bartell. Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday at St. Therese Church, Wayland with Fr. Charles Fischer as Celebrant. Interment Sts. Cyril & Methodius cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross Blood Donation Unit. Arrangements by Archer, Hampel & Kubiak, Wayland Chapel.

BUIST -- Mr. Frank (Budd) Buist, aged 84, of Byron Center, by the grace of his Lord, stood in account before God on Thursday, February 1, 2001. He led his family by quiet example and gentle words. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Florence A. (Helder) and second wife, Grace K. (Leffring). He leaves his children, Joy and Bill Lokker, Mary and Al TerHaar, Cal and Mary Buist, Faith Buist, Carole and Dave VanEe, Rainelle and Ernesto Hernandez, Nancy and Paul VanderWeide; 25 grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; his sisters, Emma Fenske and Irene Southland. The Funeral Service was held Monday, February 5, 2001 at Second Christian Reformed Church of Byron Center with Rev. John Gorter officiating. Interment Kent Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be given to C.R.W.R.C. or Holland Home Hospice. Arrangements by Stroo Funeral Home.

PETERMAN -- Donna Marie Peterman, aged 45, of Middleville, passed away Thursday, February 1, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Rick; sons, Brian Peterman, Ryan Peterman, Robbie Peterman; mother, Kathryn Slawson; brothers and sisters, Darrell & Merrilee Slawson, Dawn & Greg Niles, Dave & Peggy Slawson, Debbie Slawson, Dean Slawson; mother & father-in-law, Donald & Anna Peterman; brothers and sisters-in-law, Martha & Jim Tucker, Donald & Barb Peterman, Jr., Ken & Pam Peterman, Dave & Terene Peterman; special friends, Don & Karen Swainston; several nieces and nephews. Funeral Service was held Tuesday, at the funeral home with Pastor Lee Zachman of Middleville United Methodist Church officiating. Interment Elmwood cemetery. SALISBURY -- Betty Lou, age 82, of Wayland, MI, died Wednesday, January 31, 2001 at Spectrum Health Center (Grand Rapids-Downtown). Miss Salisbury was born June 4, 1918 in Detroit, MI, the daughter of Charles Gibson Salisbury and Lucy Bate Rowe (Kyle) Salisbury. She had been a resident of Wayland only since February of 1999, relocating here from Jersey City, NJ to be near and cared for by her most immediate family members, nephew and niece, Jeffrey Louis & Penny Kay Salisbury of Wayland & their children. Miss Salisbury was a graduate of South Lyon HS and attended Wayne State University, in Detroit, where she studied art, music, world literature, creative writing and French. In her youth and into young adulthood, she became an accomplished singer and pianist, having taken private lessons for many years. During WW II, she worked as a "Rosie the Riveter" at the Willow Run Bomber Plant operated by the Ford Motor Co. Later she worked for the Detroit Times (before it was purchased by the Detroit News) and New York Times newspapers (after moving to that area in 1961). She ended her professional working career as a travel coordinator for Northwest Airlines, before retiring in 1982. Although she always traveled frequently, her employment with Northwest allowed her the opportunity to travel even more extensively, visiting all 50 states as well as numerous trips to Japan, England and several other European countries. She devoted much of her adult life to living with and caring for her mother until her passing in the early 1970s. She was preceded in death by her sisters Mary Elizabeth (Molly) and Charlot, as well as brothers Charles Gibson, Jr. (Gib) and James. She is survived by several cousins in England, as well as three generations of nieces and nephews and a host of dear friends and acquaintances locally, across the country, Canada, and abroad. A family remembrance and memorial service was conducted by Jeff & Penny Salisbury, Saturday February 3 at the Phillips Funeral Home in South Lyon, MI. Interment of her cremains was at the

South Lyon (MI) cemetery alongside those of her younger brother James Louis Salisbury. Memorial donations may be made to the South Lyon (MI) Historical Society and/or the Allegan County Resource Development Corp. [ACRDC} and their Meals-on-Wheels & Home Health Aides programs in Allegan, MI.

SMITH -- John W. Smith, aged 49, of East Jordon, MI passed away Monday, February 5, 2001 at his home. He was born on September 10, 1951 in Grand Rapids, MI the son of Bryce and Mary Ellen (Schad) Smith. On December 28, 1974 in Caledonia, he married Margaret Kaechele. John graduated from Wayland High School in 1969 and Michigan Technological University in Marquette in 1973. He worked twenty-four years for Dalton Foundry in Warsaw, Indiana from 1973 to 1997. John moved to East Jordon in 1997 and worked for East Jordon Iron Works until 2000. He was a member of Boyne City United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Smith of East Jordon; two children, Matthew Smith and Melissa Smith both at home; his parents, Bryce and Mary Ellen Smith of Caledonia; one brother, Thomas (Ora Lou) Smith of Caledonia; one sister, Diane (Donald) Blain of Caledonia. Funeral Services were held Thursday, February 8, 2001 at the Leighton United Methodist Church, Caledonia. Rev. Ray Townsend and Rev. Carl Litchfield officiating. Interment Hooker cemetery, Wayland. Memorials may be given to Northwest Michigan Community Health Agency (Hospice) or the Boyne City United Methodist Church. Arrangements by Beeler Funeral Home, Middleville.

WEICK -- Donald Weick, age 89, of Hopkins, MI, died Saturday, January 27, 2001 at his home. Mr. Weick was born July 13, 1911 in Allegan Twp., the son of Fred & Maude (Dendel) Weick. He was a life member of Hopkins United Methodist Church. In 1968 he developed & built East Lake Campground. Surviving are 3 children, Jane Morris of Wyoming, Roger C. Weick of Hopkins and Kathleen & James Sauer of Hopkins; 11 grandchildren and their spouses, AnnEarl & Jim Kline, Brian Morris, Jay W. Morris, Rachel & Jon Engelking, Tad & Susanne Morris, Chris & Marc Brott, Bruce & Judy Weick, Gary & Margie Weick, Troy & Maureen Weick, Trisha & Stephen Nutter and Chad & Jaime Sauer; 14 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Vernon Weick of Hopkins and Robert & Ruth Weick of Gun Lake; several nieces, nephews & cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Adeline, in 1995; brother Meb, and 2 sisters-in-law, Norma and Maxine. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 30, at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Hopkins Chapel. Pastors Ray Field & David Yoh officiated. Interment Poplar Hill cemetery, Monterey Twp. Memorial donations may be made to Barry Community Hospice.

BUELL -- William Gene Buell, Orangeville. Bill's life began November 17, 1958 in Columbus, Ohio, the son of Virgil Gene and Phyllis Jean (Elkins) Buell. At the age of 16 he came with his family to the Orangeville area. Bill was a handyman and carpenter with particular expertise in wiring and plumbing and did much of his work with his family within the Gun Lake/Orangeville area. He also worked for his father-in-law at Gun Lake Logging. Bill loved old cars and did a lot of work and restoration on them. Bill enjoyed fishing but most of all loved being together with his family. They remember him as having a rough exterior with a kind heart and great sense of humor. Bill's family includes his wife Denice, children, William Gene Buell II, Brandi Lyn Buell, Bradley Jay Buell, Natasha Jane Pinks, Bridget Judith Buell, Brandon William Buell; a grandchild, Briana Lynn Balder; his father and step mother, Virgil and Joyce Buell; brothers and sisters, Jerry Dean Buell, Barbara Ann Geyer, Elaine Marie Taylor; step sisters, Theresa Marie Elkins and Beverly Kaye Hunter; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Chuck and Judy Chlebana. Bill died suddenly on Wednesday, January 10, 2001 at his home. He was preceded in death by his mother, Phyllis; and a sister, Sandra Kay Buell. Friends called Thursday, January 11, 2001 at Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home, Plainwell Chapel and Friday, January 12 at the Pentecostal Church of Orangeville. A Celebration of Life Service was held Saturday, January 13 at the church with Mike Risner and Rich Sheldon leading the service. COOPER -- Roydon Bruce Cooper, aged 80, of Caledonia passed away January 11, 2001 peacefully at home. He is survived by his wife, Louetta Beverly; his four children, Brian (Suzanne) of Shelbyville, Brockton of Winter Park, FL, Laura of Grand Rapids, Brandon (Victoria) of Byron Center; his grandson, Keane; his sister, Ann of Washington D.C.; his brother John of Northbrook, IL and his beloved dog, Beowolf. A native of Grand Rapids, Roydon served in World War II before embarking on a successful career as a design engineer spanning 40 years and two coasts. A memorial service was held January 15 at the United Church of Wayland, Pastor Nancy Zerban, celebrant. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan or the American Cancer Society.

VANOTTERLOO -- Patricia D. VanOtterloo, aged 64, of Moline, passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Perry; children, Vickie Hightower, Perry & Becky Kogelschatz, Scott & Debbie Kammeraad, Michelle & David LaCourse; eleven grandchildren; mother, Marvel Fitzgerald; brothers, Lynn and Linda Fitzgerald, Mike & Sue Fitzgerald; several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Pat was preceded in death by her father, Ellis Fitzgerald and brother, LeRoy Fitzgerald. Pat retired from Diesel Technology after 18 years of service. She attended Wayland Union Schools and Godwin High School, and was a member of the Wayland VFW Post #7581 Ladies Auxiliary. Funeral Service was held 11:00 am Saturday at Moline Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Will Hensen officiating. Interment Hooker cemetery. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society. Arrangements by Archer, Hampel & Kubiak, Dorr Chapel.

DYKSTRA -- In loving memory of baby Thomas Jay Dykstra who lived and died on Friday, December 22, 2000. His little body brought great joy to those who loved him. We know he securely rests in the arms of Jesus. He is survived by his parents, Barry and Jill Dykstra of Dorr; siblings, Jessica Jane and Alissa Audrey; grandparents, David and Janice Dykstra of Hamilton, Jim and Jane Zinn of Dorr, Jim and Deb Koperski of Prudenville, MI. Aunts and Uncles, Dave and Sara Dykstra, Todd and Pricilla Dykstra, Becky Dykstra, Todd and Dan Koperski, Kelly and Jamie LaBrosse, Erin and Melissa Koperski and cousins. A private service was held for immediate family at Holland Community Hospital with Pastor Richard Helderop officiating. Burial was held on Thursday, December 28 at Salem Township cemetery for immediate family. Arrangements by Archer, Hampel & Kubiak, Dorr Chapel.

NICKERSON -- Thomas E. Nickerson, aged 72, of Jenison, formerly of Wayland Twp., passed away Tuesday, December 26, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia; children, Mary (Bud) Humphrey, Bob (Beth) Nickerson, Steve Nickerson, Melinda Potter, Janet Nickerson; 15 grandchildren; special friends, Roger Potter, Tami Heyboer, Mike Redding and Deb Nickerson. Mr. Nickerson operated Tom's Discount Foods & Tom's Banquet Halls in Hudsonville. Funeral & Committal Services were held Friday at the funeral home with Rev. Bruce N. Stewart officiating. Interment Elmwood cemetery. Arrangements by Archer, Hampel & Kubiak, Wayland Chapel.

TEIN -- William Tein, Martin. Bill's life began November 8, 1921 in Grand Rapids, Michigan the son of the late John and Sena Tein. Bill was a graduate of Martin High School and had attended the Henry Ford Trade School in Detroit. Bill was a proud veteran of WWII and had served in Okinawa and Korea in the Army as a paratrooper. While on leave and in his uniform, he was introduced to Betty Schebergen at church, a date led to a courtship that culminated into their marriage on April 11, 1947. Bill worked for Hammond Machine and retired in 1985 after 30 years of service. He was a skilled craftsman and had built grandfather clocks for his family, and had helped build several houses in the area. Bill was an active member of the Martin Reformed Church and was a former Deacon and treasurer. He volunteered for flag placement in the local cemeteries and loved to garden and fish. His family remembers his love of baseball and the Detroit Tigers. His family includes his wife, Betty; his three children and their spouses, Paul and Brenda Tein of Ft. Wayne, IN, Valerie and Mike Petersen of Otsego, Vonnie and Tom Hildebrand of Martin; 7 grandchildren, Adam Tein, Dylan and Alycia Witt, Kendra Petersen, Benjamin, Jennifer and Stacy Hildebrand; 2 brothers, John and Mae Tein of Three Rivers, and Al and Evalene Tein of Wayland; his mother-in-law, Marietta Schebergen and a sister-in-law, Jeanette Tein; several nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life Service was held Friday at the Martin Reformed Church, Rev. James Goldschmeding speaking. Burial followed in the family plot in East Martin cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Martin Reformed Church Building Fund. Arrangements by Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren Funeral Home, Plainwell Chapel.
