PERRYMAN, Victorine M.

Victorine's life began June 17, 1911 in DuQuoin, IL. in her parents home. Her mother named her "Victory" due to the long and difficult labor. She was the sixth of nine children.Victorine grew up in DuQuoin and graduated from high school there. In 1937 Victorine married Virgil Perryman and they moved to Massillon, OH where she worked as a nurse at the State Hospital. Later Victorine and her family moved to Kalamazoo where she worked as a psychiatric nurse at the Kalamazoo State Hospital until her retirement in the mid 1960's. After retirement Victorine and her husband opened up their home to provide a home for veterans. She enjoyed cooking and caring for them. Victorine loved family gatherings and especially visiting her sister and her nieces and nephews in Illinois. She used these get-togethers as a time to laugh and give of herself to her family. She enjoyed socializing, travelling, and being on the go. She loved to drive and would often go to Meijer Thrifty Acres for just one item. Her motto for driving was "I wait so long, I give it gas and go!" In addition she especially enjoyed being with her dog "Ty". Victorine had 2 sons, Fred Hemmer and Paul Metten who preceded her in death. In 1978 Victorine's husband Virgil died and she moved to Delton to be close to her niece. She lived independently until her health began to fail at which time she made her home with her niece Randy Armintrout and her husband Richard whom she was always especially close to. In addition to her niece Randy, other members of Victorine's family include her sister Mary Raben of Harrisburg, IL. As well as several other nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. Her family recalls that "We all called her aunt Vic, friends and nurses called her Vicky, nieces and nephews from Illinois called her Vicky Baby." Victorine died Saturday morning September 6, 1997 at Borgess Medical Center. She was feisty and full of life. She was indeed "victorious." Friends may spend time with her family Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home Portage chapel where a Celebration of Life Service will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. Rev Dan Minor speaking. Victorine will be entombed with her husband at Mt. Ever-Rest cemetery Mausoleum. Friends who wish may make donations in Victorine's memory to the Humane Society. WOODS, Thelma Jean

Jean's life began April 21, 1909 in Grand Rapids, MI. She received a Bachelor Degree from Western Normal School with a major in French and Mathematics, and a Life Certificate in Teaching. Jean was a member of the North American Mycological Association and the Kalamazoo Geological Mineral Society. Her family includes her husband, Oliver R. Woods, whom she married November 11, 1933; two sons and their wives, Dr. Douglas R. Woods, Ph.D. and Donna L. Hankey-Woods of Silver Spring, MD, and Lawrence E. and Frances H. Woods of Saline, MI; two brothers and their wives, Hale and Betsy Harrington and Dr. Kirk and Phyllis Harrington, M.D., all of California; four grandchildren, Paul, Julie, Ryan and Gregory Woods; and several nieces and nephews. Jean died Sunday, September 14, 1997 in Portage Tendercare Nursing Home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Elsie (Hoodemaker) Harrington, and a sister, Nancy Walker. Friends may visit with Jean's family 6-8 PM Wednesday at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren Funeral Home, Portage Chapel, Lovers Lane at Milham, where a Celebration of Life service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday. Burial will follow in Mt. Ever-Rest cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society or to a charity of choice. YEOMANS, John E. "Ted"

Ted's life began September 18, 1918 in Winnipeg, Canada and he moved to this area as a young child. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Plainwell and farmed in the Richland area until his retirement. Ted greatly enjoyed playing and restoring violins. He was a loving family man and his family includes his three children and their spouses, Thomas and Esther Yeomans, Debbie and Shawne Boe all of Richland, Sandy and Jim Jones of Mattawan, his brother Robert Yeomans of Richland, a sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Jack Welborn of Kalamazoo, 5 grandchildren, Raymond Flynn, Carey and Andrea Schoneboom, Kathy and Michael Boe, several nieces and nephews. Ted died Monday October 6, 1997 in Plainwell after a short illness, and was preceded in death by his wife Kathleen Yeomans in 1984, whom he married on April 5, 1952 and by his parents, John and Harriett Yeomans. Friends may call at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home, Plainwell Chapel, Wednesday 6-8 PM and Thursday 2-4 & 6-8 PM Thursday, where services will be held Friday 11 AM, Rev. Charles Grauer speaking. Burial will follow in the family plot in Prairie Home cemetery, Richland. Memorial gifts may be made to the charity of your choice. BROADHURST, Augusta Wilhemina

Wilhemina's life began September 24, 1902 in Bainbridge, Michigan the daughter of the late Gustav and Marie Mundt. She married William Broadhurst June 23, 1923 and he preceded her into glory in 1987, at the age of 95. "Gustie" was the last of 12 children in her family. Her family includes 4 children and their spouses, C. Parmor and Mary Ellen Broadhurst of Sand Diego, CA., Clara Chapman of Haines City, FL, Juanita and Dick Lehman of Plainwell, MI, Bill and Norma Broadhurst of Rockport, TX, 11 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren. Services were held May 20, 1998 in Haines City, burial followed in Forest Hill cemetery. Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren, Plainwell chapel. BUFFENBARGER, Roma

Roma's life began November 11, 1908 in Kenton, Ohio the daughter of the late John and Ethel Madden, and had been a resident of this area since 1942. Roma was a member of the Cooper Baptist Church, and was also active in the Plainwell Pythian Sisters and was a member of the Past Chiefs Club. Roma was a loving mother and grandmother and her home was the center for many family gatherings and activities. Her family includes, her three children and a daughter in law, Dolores Snyder, Phil and Dolores Buffenbarger, all of Plainwell, Madelyn McIntosh of Park Forest, Illinois, 3 sisters, Lodean McCafferty of Plainwell, Rosemary and Edwin Shook of Otsego and Phyllis Ransbottom of Plainwell, a sister in law Sarah Buffenbarger, 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Roma died peacefully at her home under the care of her family, Tuesday May 26, 1998, and was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis "Boots" Buffenbarger in 1985, her daughter, Beverly Dawn Buffenbarger and a brother William Madden. Friends may call at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home, Plainwell Chapel, Thursday 2-4 & 6-8 PM, where a Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday 2 PM. Burial will follow in the family plot in Hillside cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Cooper Baptist Church or the VNA Hospice. CARRIER, Rose Marie

Rose's life began February 14, 1930 in Otsego, Michigan the daughter of the late Russell and Marie Long. She had been a resident of this area all her life and had graduated from the Plainwell Adult Education program in 1984. She was a Life member of the VFW#3030 Auxiliary. One of her favorite past times was playing bingo and slot machines. Rose Marie was an accomplished quilter and was a member of the Hope Lutheran Church quilting group, she had worked at Bridgewood Nursing Home and had given away many quilts and afghans over the years. Her greatest joy in her life was her family and they include her husband, Wilbur "Dick", her children and their spouses, Roger and Gloria Brainard of Otsego, Sandie and Mike Johnston of Vicksburg, Dick and Mary Ann Carrier of Scotts, John Carrier of Richland, Mike and Gayle Carrier of Iowa, Steve and Mary Carrier of Battle Creek, Karen DeYoung of Vicksburg, Shirley and Dick Nance of Richland, 2 brothers, Russell Long Jr. of Florida, Lester and Phyllis Long of Otsego, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Rose Marie died Monday, May 4, 1998 at her home under the loving care of her family, and was preceded in death by her brothers, Louis and Wilbur Long. Friends may call at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home, Plainwell Chapel, 2-4 & 6-8 PM Wednesday, where a Celebration of Life Service will be held Thursday 11 AM. Rev. CLINARD, Mr. Gerald L.

Jerry's life began March 27, 1929 in Kalamazoo the son of Harley and Florence (Richardson) Clinard. He grew up in the Alamo area and graduated from Plainwell High School in 1947. Jerry had a great passion for farming and soon after high school purchased a farm in Alamo that he still was actively farming. Jerry attended Michigan State University where he graduated from the Agricultural /Technical Program. After college he entered the United States Army. He was employed by ABEX/NWL (National Waterlift). Jerry married Norma Brownell on May 20, 1955 and they had 5 children; Priscilla (Tony) LoBretto of Alamo, Penny (Tom) VanRavensway of Plainwell, Pam (Scott) Campbell of Columbus, IN, Paula (Dave) Hillsburg of Mattawan, and Patty (John) Stuart of Scotts. Jerry retired from ABEX/NWL in 1992 after 32 years as a machinist. Since his retirement he has been able to devote his time to his farming that he loved so much. He also enjoyed woodworking, had been active in 4-H and was a devoted family man. In addition to his wife and daughters, other members of his family include his 12 grandchildren, a brother Harley (Bernie) Clinard of Kalamazoo a sister Jane Clinard also of Kalamazoo as well as several nieces and nephews. Jerry was preceded in death by a grandson Michael Campbell. Jerry died suddenly in a farming accident at his home Monday May 11, 1998. Friends may spend time with his family Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren Funeral Home Plainwell Chapel where a Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. Pastor Don DeYoung speaking. Jerry will be buried near his grandson at Alamo cemetery. Friends may make donations in Jerry's memory to the First Presbyterian Church Health Clinic in Kalamazoo or the Make A Wish Foundation. ELLIS, William Clifford

William's life began December 11, 1924 in Elmira, New York. William spent most of his childhood in Ellisburg, PA a town his ancestors founded. When he was 15 William's family moved to Summit Hill, PA. It was here he walked home Alberta O'Gurek on her fifteenth birthday. In 1943 William enlisted in the Army. During his enlistment he served in active duty in the South Pacific for 2 1\2 years. While in the army William kept in contact with Alberta through letters and dating when he was on leave. A year after leaving the service on May 1, 1947 William and Alberta were married . They had three boys; William A. Ellis from Montreal, Canada; Randall James and Nancy Ellis from Galesburg, MI; and Glenn L. and Cindy Ellis from Livonia, MI. William graduated from Ford's College in Pottsville, PA. In 1955 William moved his family to Portage. William retired as supervisor of Allied Paper Company in 1988. In his spare time he enjoyed being active in scouts when his boys were young. William also enjoyed hunting and fishing and he was a conservationist. William's family includes; sisters Bernice and her husband John Whitehead of Bethlehem, PA and Ardis and her husband Don Vandenboss of Battle Creek, MI; five grandchildren; and 7 nieces and nephews. William died Thursday, April 30, 1998 at his home in Portage. His parents Clifford and Maisie (Johnston\ Black) Ellis preceded William in death. Friends may visit with Williams family and celebrate his life 6-8 PM Saturday and Sunday at Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren Funeral Home Portage Chapel where a Rosary will be recited Sunday at 7:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 10 AM at Saint Monica's Catholic Church, Father Larry Kroll celebrant. Burial will follow at Fort Custer National cemetery. A luncheon will be held at Saint Monica Catholic Church following interment at Fort Custer. Memorials may be directed to West Michigan Cancer Center or to VNA Hospice. HUME, Dale

Dale was born on April 14, 1936 in Dexter, MO. One of the things that he did as a boy was pick cotton in the Dexter area. He was also very active in football, baseball, and track. He was an all around athlete. Dale graduated from Dexter High School in 1954 and moved to Michigan to be with his brother. He began working in construction, building houses with his uncle at first and then working for Miller Davis Company. In 1962 he met Roxanne Little through some mutual friends. They were married on June 25, 1963 in Kalamazoo, MI. Dale has seven children, Dale and Jessie Hume of Arkansas, Timothy Hume of Colorado, Christy and Ken Leith of Mississippi, Doreen of Plainwell, Tracy and Jeffrey Lovell of Portage, David Hume of Oshtemo and Rhonda Hume of Kalamazoo. Dale was a talented welder and worked for several area companies. In 1980 he opened H&L Welding in Kalamazoo and ran his own business through 1991, when he was forced to retire due to health problems. Dale enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and fishing. Most of all Dale loved his family. He loved helping his kids with their athletics and boasting about their accomplishments. He volunteered for 16 years with Vicksburg Little League and coached Rocket Football. His family also includes a brother, Leslie and Beverly Hume of Plainwell, several aunts and uncles, 4 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild and two very special friends, Bernard and Char Crouch of Vicksburg. Dale died early Sunday morning, May 3, 1998 in Kalamazoo. His parents, Leslie and LaVern (Smith) Hume, 2 uncles and 1 aunt preceded him in death. Friends may spend time with Dale's family on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren Funeral Home, Vicksburg Chapel, where the Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in Vicksburg cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Vicksburg Little League. Please share a memory with the family at the chapel or online at www.rdmg.com

KELSEY, Mr. Carl "Bill"

Bill's life began March 23, 1910 in Martin the son of Orrin J. and Bessie May (Chapman) Kelsey. When Bill was six years old he moved with his family to Lake County. At the age of 17 he moved to the Bellevue area for a short time where he farmed and met a young lady named Bertha Morgan. They dated for a short time until Bill moved back to Martin. He contacted Bertha when she came to Allegan to teach school and they resumed their courtship. They married on March 8, 1946. Bill and Bertha had 5 children; Judith Kelsey-Powell and her husband Keith of Chicago, David Mead-Kelsey and his wife Kathie of Martin, Janet Kelsey and her husband W. Randolph Smith of Evanston, IL, Daniel Kelsey of Martin, and Joyce Boyco and her husband Ernest of Mesa, AZ. Bill continued to farm and Bertha came to teach at the Martin Public Schools. When Bill retired from farming he went to work as a custodian for the Martin Schools until he retired in 1973 as Head of Maintenance. Bill was the first Zoning Officer for Martin Township. He was also a member of the Martin United Methodist Church. Bill always enjoyed the out of doors and when his son David was old enough Bill taught him to hunt deer. He will be remembered as a very committed family man. Other members of Bill's family include his 11 grandchildren, his brothers George Kelsey and his wife Frances of Mesa, AZ, James Kelsey and his wife Helen of Sacramento, CA, Donald Kelsey of Grand Junction, CO, Raymond Kelsey of Hopkinsburg, Lewis Kelsey and his wife Arlene of Plainwell, a sister Helen Pfeister of Grand Ledge and several nieces and nephews. A sister Laura Closs preceded Bill in death. Bill died Sunday morning May 3, 1998 at home with his family at his side. Friends may spend time with his family this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren Funeral Home Plainwell Chapel where a Celebration of Life Service will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. with Rev William Bills speaking. Bill will be buried at East Martin cemetery. Friends who wish may make donation in his memory to Wings of Hope Hospice or Martin Methodist Church.
