LONG, Buell Cecil

Cecil's life began February 14, 1914 in Oil Springs, Kentucky the son of the late Floyd and Effie Long, and had resided in this area for the last 44 years. Cecil was a great bargain hunter and loved to go to flea markets, auctions and garage sales. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed listening to blue grass music. His family includes his 5 children, Peggy Thompson of Battle Creek, Edward C. Long of Amarillo, Texas, Harry M. Long and Stephen A. Long both of Plainwell and Kathy A. Long of Kalamazoo, 4 sisters and 2 brothers, Christine Stambough, Kanawha and Toby Long, Elizabeth Taylor, and Beverly Kay Stone, Faye Cunningham; 9 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Cecil died Saturday May 9, 1998 in Plainwell and was preceded in death by his wife Katherine Anne Long, a son James, his stepmother, Alka Long, sisters, Alice Pennington, Jewell Rice and Dessie Conley, brothers, Walter, Eddie and James Long. Friends may call at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home, Plainwell Chapel, where a Celebration of Life Service will be held Thursday 1 PM, Rev. Dr. Donald E. Thompson speaking. Burial will follow in the family plot in Hillside cemetery Plainwell. Friends may share a memory with the family at the chapel or on line at www.rdmg.com.

MAYER, Mr. Robert K. "Tank"

Bob's life began September 25, 1929 in Centerville, MI. the son of Benjamin and Grace (Darr) Mayer. Bob grew up in Centerville and when he entered high school he played basketball. After graduating from Centerville High School he went to work in a mill there. In 1958 Bob came to Kalamazoo and joined the Kalamazoo Fire Department. Early in his career he attained the rank of Lieutenant and worked as a training officer. He retired in 1990 as Captain after 32 years of service. Bob had a great love of the outdoors. He especially loved hunting deer and fishing on Lake Michigan. Several years ago he was an assistant scout master as well as a member of the Moose Lodge. Members of Bob's family include his children and there spouses; Jennifer and Robert Hill of Kalamazoo, David and Janine Mayer of Grandville, Deborah Mayer of Kalamazoo and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister Helen Lahti. Bob died Wednesday May 20, 1998 in Kalamazoo. A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren Funeral Home Portage Chapel 1 p.m. Tuesday May 26, 1998. In lieu of flowers friends of Bob's are encourage to make donations in his memory to the American Cancer Society.

OGILVIE, Jennie A. (Schuiteboer)

Jennie was born June 10, 1903 in the Netherlands the daughter of the late Fred and Jennie (Osterheert) Hiemstra, she came to this country as an infant and was a resident of this area most of her life. Jennie with her husband John operated Schuiteboer Dairy from 1924 until John's death in 1962. Following her retirement she wintered in Florida for 25 years, which she enjoyed very much. Her family includes her 3 children and their spouses, Fred and Jean Schuiteboer of Bitely, Michigan, Gerald and Mary Lou Schuiteboer of Otsego, Linda and Jack Mitchell of Plainwell, 12 grandchildren, several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Jennie died at home under the care of her family and her friend Nancy Rittenhouse, Tuesday May 12, 1998, and was preceded in death by her husbands, John Schuiteboer in 1962, Douglas Ogilvie in 1980, her son Martin Schuiteboer in 1991 and 2 grandsons, Jerry and Dirk Schuiteboer. Friends may call at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home, Plainwell Chapel, Thursday 3-5 and 6-9 PM, where a Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday 10 AM, Rev. Donald DeYoung speaking. Burial will take place in the family plot in Hillside cemetery, Plainwell. The family appreciated greatly the care of the Wings of Hope Hospice, memorial gifts may be made to them or the First United Methodist Church of Plainwell. PHELPS, Ruth

Ruth's life began September 28, 1900 in Farwell, MI. the daughter of Edwin and Annie (McMichael) Hinds. She came to Kalamazoo in 1917 and later graduated from the Bronson Hospital School of Nursing in 1921. Shortly thereafter she married Loren M. Phelps and they had two children; Michael Phelps and his wife Nancy of Kalamazoo and Marrianne Phelps of Washington D.C. Ruth worked as a Registered Nurse at Bronson Public Health Nursing Services. She was a long time member of the First Congregational Church in Kalamazoo as well as a member of the Ladies Library Association. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Loren in 1968. Other members of Ruth's family include her grandsons Michael O. Phelps, Matthew A. Phelps and his wife Ginger; two great-grandchildren Dustin and Alissa Phelps. Ruth died Saturday May 16, 1998 in Potomac, MD where she had living for the past few years under her daughters' care. Friends may spend time with her family Wednesday from 12 noon to 1 p.m. at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren Funeral Home Portage Chapel where a Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. Ruth will be buried next to her husband at Mt. Ever-Rest cemetery. Friends may make donations in Ruth's memory to the Kalamazoo Ladies Library Association Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes. SHARRARD, Parker Earl DVM

Parker's life began December 5, 1921 in Imlay City, Michigan. In 1943 he received a degree in Veterinary Medicine from Michigan State University. Parker married Jean Strauser from St. Johns, Michigan on March 21, 1943. After practicing veterinary medicine in Chelsea, Michigan for 23 years, they moved to Plainwell in 1966; he then worked at the Animal Clinic in Kalamazoo until he retired. He served for many years on the Ransom District Library Board. His family includes his wife, Jean Sharrard, 4 children and their spouses, Sandra and Kristian Hvidberg of Phoenix, AZ, Thomas and Kay Sharrard of Milwaukee, WI, Carole and Art Morley of Tampa, Fl., and Lisa and John DeTiberio of St. Louis, MO., grandchildren, Scott Sharrard of New York, NY, Sara and Julie Bustamante of Tampa, Fl, Anne and Cynthia DiTiberio of St. Louis, a sister Ruby Pistrui of Chandler, AZ., cousin Arlene Justin of Ft. Lauderdale, Fl, and several nieces and nephews. Parker died suddenly, May 23, 1998 in Plainwell. Friends may call at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home, Plainwell Chapel, Wednesday 7-8:30 PM, there will be no service. TUESLEY, Robert

Robert's life began November 3, 1902 in Howard Township, Michigan. Robert spent his childhood and adulthood farming in Niles, Michigan. On July 25, 1932, Robert married Agnes Dolph and they had four children: Robert and his wife Carol Tuesley of Portage, MI; Linda and her husband Gerald Crotser of Three Rivers, MI; Sharron and her husband Charles Shingledecker of Marcellus, MI; and Diane Westfall who preceded her father in death. In Robert's spare time he enjoyed being outdoors and watching ball games. Robert's family includes; brothers Joe and his wife Marion Tuesley of St. Cloud, FL. and Seth and his wife Marge Tuesley of Niles, MI., 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Robert died Tuesday, April 28, 1998 in Three Rivers, MI. His wife Agnes, daughter Diane, and parents Robert and Eunice (Coulter) Tuesley, and brother Phillip Tuesley preceded Robert in death. Friends may visit with Robert's family Wednesday, April 29, from 7-9 PM at Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren Funeral Home Portage Chapel. Robert will be buried Monday at 11 AM next to his wife at Osceola Memory Gardens in Kissimee, Florida. Memorials may be directed to American Cancer Society. VANDER PLOEG, Shannon Marie

Shannon's life began September 25, 1982 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of James and Wendy (Stewart) VanderPloeg. She lived in this area all her life and was a 10th grader at Otsego High School, where she was active in the band "color guard", soccer and her favorite activity the Winter Guard "Illusions". Shannon was an academic achiever, who enjoyed reading and music. Her family remembers her as a bright, sassy girl who loved her family and life, and recalled that her last days of her life were some of the most fun and rewarding for her. Her family includes her parents Wendy and Greg Hassel of Otsego and Jim and Pam VanderPloeg of Kalamazoo, her brothers and sisters, Nicholas Lumbard, Kyle Russell, Autumn Russell, Caitlin VanderPloeg, and Willow Hassel, her grandparents, Mike and Larraine Stewart, John and Marylou VanderPloeg, Mandy Hensley, many aunts, uncles, cousins, and boyfriend, Grant Mitchell. Shannon died Sunday May 24, 1998, in Battle Creek, as a result of an auto accident. Friends may call at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home, Plainwell Chapel, Wednesday 6-8 PM and Thursday 2-4 & 6-8 PM, where a Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday 10:30 AM, Rev. Tim Foreman speaking. Burial will follow in Trowbridge cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Winter Guard "Illusions". WYCOFF, Ruth I.

Ruth's life began April 5, 1917 in Richland, Michigan the daughter of the late Frank and Lena Sonnevil. She had been a resident of this area all her life and was a past leader for the Plainwell 4-H Club, and a member of the garden club. Her family remembers her fondness for the farm life, gardening and flowers and playing cards. Her family includes her 3 children and their spouses, Charles and Judy Wycoff of Grosse Ile, Michigan, James Wycoff of Plainwell, Dorothy and Lonnie Cool of Kalamazoo, 6 grandchildren, Jonathan, Sara Elizabeth, Jessica and Shannon Wycoff, Melissa and Brian Cool, a great granddaughter, Samantha Wycoff, a sister Helen Morris, several nieces and nephews. Ruth died peacefully at her home Thursday May 21, 1998, and was preceded in death by her husband Frederick in 1973, 2 brothers, Ray and Roy Sonnevil and a sister Edna. Friends may call at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home, Plainwell Chapel, Monday 4-8 PM, where a Celebration of Life Service will be held Tuesday 2 PM. Burial will follow in the family plot in East Cooper cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Friends may share a memory with the family at the chapel
