HELEN JARRELL

Prestonsburg, Ky.

Helen Gertrude Jarrell, 88, of Prestonsburg, Ky., died April 30, 2006, while in the care of Heartland Manor in Jackson. She was born March 23, 1918, in Martin, Ky., to William Grant Jarrell and Frances Laurie (Lafferty).

Mrs. Jarrell is survived by her two children, Richard A. (Sharon) Lynch and Frances J. (Rod) West; four grandchildren, Pam (Ken) Shepard, Daya (Oscar) Garcia, Trevor West, Briana West; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by several husbands, Earl Lynch, Curtis Jarrell and Chalmer Myers; a beloved grandson, Anthony Lynch, who was an attorney; and three sisters, baby Thelma, Lula DeMarke and Alma Key.

Mrs. Jarrell was a stubborn, courageous, adventuresome and independent soul, and a woman well ahead of her time. She came to Michigan for the first time during World War II to support the war effort by building B29 bomber airplanes at the Willow Run Airport. She was one of the original "Rosie the Riveters." After the war was over, she moved back to Martin, Ky.

In 1950, Mrs. Jarrell and her family moved back to Michigan and took residence in Munith. In 1956, she was hired at Chelsea Milling Co., known for Jiffy Mix, and worked there until her retirement in 1969.

After retiring, she followed her dream with her husband and started traveling across the United States and Canada training and racing their sulky horses. Her horses were quite successful and gave her a tremendous amount of joy.

Upon the death of her husband, she moved to Alabama and worked for Auburn University, where she taught mentally and physically challenged adults for several years. She also attended the University of Georgia.

She then moved back to her home in Prestonsburg, Ky., and started working for the state with juvenile delinquents and then on to the Layne House, where she worked with adults addicted to alcohol and drugs.

Mrs. Jarrell retired from the Layne House at age 76. She then resumed her favorite pastimes of traveling, reading and playing cards.

There will be a private family wake in her honor, at her request. Memorial contributions may be made in her honor to the Layne House Substance Abuse TRET Program Rehabilitation Service, 1416 South Lake Drive, Prestonsburg, KY 41653.

Arrangements for cremation were made by Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home in Stockbridge.

MARY-ROSE COOK

Grass Lake Township

Formerly of Chelsea

Do not stand at my grave and weep; I am not there; I do not sleep;I am a thousand winds that blow;I am the diamond's gift of snow;I am the sunlight on ripened grain; I am the autumn's gentle rain.

Mary-Rose Cook, 84, of Grass Lake Township, formerly of Chelsea, died May 2, 2006. She was born Sept. 14, 1921.

Mrs. Cook is survived by her sister, Audrey J. Keehn of Chelsea; a brother, John E. (Betty) Wyss of Southgate; and her stepchildren, Donald W. (Dorothy) Cook of Florida and Jerald H. (Doris) Cook of New York.

For more than 30 years, she owned Cook's Store on Sugar Loaf Lake.

A memorial service was held at the Pines in Chelsea.

Arrangements were by Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea.

MICHAEL DAVID HEDGLEN

Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Michael David Hedglen, 55, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., died April 29, 2006, at Hospice Care of Southeast Florida. He was born Dec. 7, 1950, in Cleveland, the son of Richard David and Alice (Mulhall) Hedglen.

Mr. Hedglen was a resident of southeast Florida for 20 years, and was raised in Detroit. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam.

Survivors include a son, Michael Patrick (Mary Elizabeth) Hedglen of Palm Springs, Fla.; one granddaughter, Alice Margaret Hedglen; his mother, Alice "Ann" Schifle of Chelsea; two brothers, Timothy (Kelly) and Patrick (Sheila) Hedglen; a very special friend, Jennifer Pitts; and two nephews, Matthew and Christopher Hedglen.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard, and a sister, Mary Alice Hedglen Ellicott.

A memorial Mass will be held 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Chelsea. The Rev. Brendan Walsh will officiate. Burial of his ashes will take place in Mount Olivet cemetery immediately following the service.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church.

IRENE MARY SHERROD

Saline

Formerly of Dexter

Irene Mary Sherrod, 93, of Saline, formerly of Dexter, died May 5, 2006, at the Evangelical Home in Saline. She was born Sept. 13, 1912, in Nadeau the daughter of John and Anna Riopell Micheau.

Mrs. Sherrod had lived in Dexter since 1944. She previously attended North Sharon Bible Church and Immanuel Bible Church in Chelsea, and was a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Dexter. She loved her grandchildren, gardening and her pets.

On Nov. 17, 1931, she married Harold Sherrod in Kalamazoo, and he preceded her in death Oct. 10, 1988.

Survivors include her daughter, Sandra (Benjamin) Ross of Ann Arbor; her son, Ronald Sherrod (fiancee, Ida Moon) of Hale; five grandchildren, Yvonne Smiley, David Sherrod, Kathryn Ammerman, Daniel Ross and Timothy Ross; nine great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters; six brothers; a grandson, Donald Ross; and a daughter-in-law, Beverly Sherrod.

A funeral was held Tuesday at Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea. The Rev. Ron Clark officiated. Burial was at Oak Grove cemetery in Chelsea.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Bible Church.

ROBERT G. WOODS

Brighton and Stuart, Fla.

Robert G. Woods, 81, of Brighton and Stuart, Fla., died May 7, 2006, in Florida. Bob was born May 13, 1924, in Jackson, the son of Holland O. and Irene N. Woods. On May 1, 1945, he married his loving wife, Gladys (Garvin), of 61 years in Ann Arbor.

Mr. Woods was a decorated veteran who served in the Army Air Force. He also was the owner of Variety Die & Stamping in Dexter for many years.

Mr. Woods was a member of the Masonic Lodge, and past president of Lakeland Golf and Country Club. He loved golf, and will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.

In addition to his wife, Gladys, survivors include children Judith A. (John) Fuqua of Saline, Jennifer L. (Richard) Perryman of Washington, Pa., and Kevin G. (Judy) Woods of Dexter; and his grandchildren, Christopher, Megan, Amanda, Abigail, Jonathon and Caitlin.

A celebration of Mr. Woods' life will be held noon Saturday at the Borek Jennings Funeral Home's Hamburg Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends 10 a.m. Saturday until the time of the service.

HELEN E. KOCH

Chelsea

Helen E. Koch, 87, of Chelsea died June 4, 2006, at Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born Oct. 24, 1918, in Freedom Township the daughter of Gustave and Lydia (Haas) Neyer.

Mrs. Koch was a devoted and charter member of Chelsea's Covenant Church. She was a wonderful farm cook and pretzel maker.

Mrs. Koch was devoted to her entire family, and loved to be involved with activities at Covenant Church. She loved to work in the garden and with her flowers. She and her husband farmed on the family's centennial farm.

On June 5, 1943, she married Wilbert C. Koch at her parent's home in Freedom Township, and he preceded her in death Sept. 6, 1995.

Survivors include one son, Gary W. (Kitty) of Chelsea; one daughter, Lynda (Jeff) Gladstone of Chelsea; five grandchildren, Kevin Koch, Jason (Angie) Koch, Jennifer (Doug) Groves, Julie Koch and Braden Gladstone; five great-grandchildren, EmmaLee Koch, Justin, Shelby, Kendra and Clarissa Koch, and Ryan and Alyssa Groves; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, Ronald L Koch, in 1968 and a sister, Loretta Bollinger.

A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea. The Rev. Anthony Dickerson will officiate. Burial will follow at Oak Grove cemetery in Chelsea.

The family received friends Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Church of Chelsea.

CHARLES J. SPENCER

Federal Way, Wash.

Formerly of Chelsea

Charles J. Spencer, 79, known by friends as "Charlie" or "Jim, " died May 29, 2006, in Federal Way, Wash.

A 27-year resident of Chelsea, Mr. Spencer was active in the American Legion and the Masonic Lodge. He was perhaps best known for his scale model circus, which was displayed frequently at the yearly Chelsea fair.

Mr. Spencer worked for Michigan Gas Storage, now Consumers Power Co., until his early retirement as a result of multiple sclerosis.

He and his wife, Elaine, moved to Westland in the 1970s and relocated in Washington state three years ago to be near their son.

Mr. Spencer was a man of quiet humor, a master craftsman, lover of music and could "outfox " anyone at a game of Hearts.

BETTAJEAN EDWARDS

Chelsea

Bettajean Edwards, 82, of Chelsea died May 31, 2006. She was born July 10, 1923, in Chicago to Travis Daily and Mary Newton (Dobson) Nairn. She married Ralph Edwards June 17, 1944, in Dalton, Ill.

Mrs. Edwards attended Northwestern's nursing school. She moved to South Lyon in 1985.

Mrs. Edwards was the beloved wife of Ralph Edwards of Chelsea, and loving mother of Barbara Edwards, Priscilla Parker, Cynthia Edwards and George (Kristin) Edwards.

Her brother and four grandchildren also survive.

A memorial service will be held 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Chelsea Retirement Community, 805 West Middle St., in Chelsea, with the final visitation at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Beth Foster will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Chelsea Retirement Community or Child Humane International.

Arrangements were made by Phillips Funeral Home.

ROBERT M. GOMBERG

Dexter

Robert M. Gomberg, 58, of Dexter died June 1, 2006, at Arbor Hospice Residence. He was born Jan. 31, 1948, in Ann Arbor the son of Henry and Edna (Cohen) Gomberg.

Mr. Gomberg enjoyed toy trains, camping and photography. He was an electrician for Local 252 for several years.

On March 12, 1977, he married Pamela L. Aldrich, and she survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Stephanie (Joe Dinkel) Gomberg; one brother, Richard (Sara) Gomberg; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Janet and Ernest Aldrich; two stepbrothers, Stephen Lisanski and Eugene (Daisy) Lisanski; and a stepsister, Judith (Larry Hunter) Lasanski.

Other survivors include four nieces, Ilsa Luna-Flores, Tatiana Gomberg, Jennifer Aldrich and Laura Aldrich; three nephews, Nick (Michelle) Aldrich, Jason Aldrich and Scott Aldrich; one brother-in-law, Tim (Sherry) Aldrich; his grandparents, June Koch and Doris (Forrest) Halladay; his aunts and uncles, Diane (Richard) Fowler; his cousins, Dawn, Darrin and Dennis (Regina) Fowler; and grandcousins, Daniel and Benjamin.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepmother, Edith Gomberg.

A funeral was held Saturday at Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea. The Rev. Doris Sparks officiated. Burial was at Arbor Crest cemetery in Ann Arbor.

Memorial contributions may be made to Arbor Hospice Residence or Zion Lutheran Church.

WILLIAM LUCAS

Ann Arbor

William Thomas Lucas, 81, of Ann Arbor died May 30, 2006. He was born Sept. 16, 1924, in Bessemer the son of John and Magdaline (Evsich) Lucas.

Mr. Lucas married Delores Gardiner in 1946. His beloved wife and best friend preceded him in death in 1996.

Mr. Lucas left halfway through his senior year of high school to serve his country in World War II in the U.S. Army. In addition, for 60 years, he was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, where he ushered and volunteered on many painting projects.

Mr. Lucas was a die-hard University of Michigan football fan and ushered the football games for 28 years.

He retired after 40 years of service with Delf's painting, where he worked in more than half the buildings in Ann Arbor.

Mr. Lucas was a stellar athlete in high school for his beloved "speedboys." He played on the Men's City Basketball League for many years, coached his sons in Little League and tried to make as many of his grandchildren's games as possible. He enjoyed coaching them from the stands.

Mr. Lucas loved to fish, bowl, play cards and enjoyed camping with his family. He loved being with his family, and the thing that made him most happy was family gatherings.

Mr. Lucas is survived by his children, Jacqueline (Jack) Belt of Allenton, Thomas (Sally) Lucas of Ypsilanti, Kathleen (Robert) Kennedy of Ann Arbor, Barbara (Ron) Simms of Steamboat Springs, Colo., William (Connie) Lucas of Chelsea and John Lucas of Ann Arbor; grandchildren, Jennifer, Christina, Tricia, Tim, Amy, Joe, Angela, Carrie, Scott, Jamie, Ryan, Michelle and Bill; and great-grandchildren, Anna, Jack, Lucas, Gabriel and Gabriella

Also surviving are brothers and sisters Margaret Zadra, Ruthie Grenda, James Lucas and Barbara Nessler, and a best friend, Don Osugi.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and brothers and sisters Frank Lucas, John Lucas, Mary Enger, Ann Courtney, Rose Golabeck, Alice Butter and Lucille Brynstad.

A funeral Mass was held June 2 at St. Thomas Catholic Church. The Rev. Jeff Njus officiated. Burial was at St. Thomas cemetery.

The family received visitors at Muehlig Funeral Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or the Father Pat Jackson House.
