Yalmar ‘Elmer’ Nurmi

Yalmar “Elmer” Nurmi, 81, of Newberry, died at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry Friday, January 27, 2006.

He was born November 7, 1924, in Bruces Crossing. He was one of 12 sons and daughters of Charles V. and Ida M. Nurmi.

Mr. Nurmi attended Bruces Crossing schools until he took a job as a woodsworker, an occupation he kept throughout his life. He loved to listen to music, especially Finnish music, and he enjoyed mechanical work, especially on cars.

Mr. Nurmi is preceded in death by his parents, and 10 brothers and sisters. Surviving are his brother, Bert, with his wife, Ruth, and another sister-in-law, Mayme Nurmi.

Cremation services have been held and a graveside service is planned in the spring on the family lot in Bruces Crossing cemetery.

Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry is assisting the family.

Frances Piippo

Frances Corrine Piippo of Grandville was a former Rudyard resident, where she was a member of the Grace Bible Church and the Rudyard Area Senior Citizens. She worked for 23 years as a principal’s office secretary at Rudyard Area Schools, until her 1989 retirement.

Mrs. Piippo was 78 when she died Sunday, January 29, 2006, at Metropolitan Hospital in Grand Rapids.

She was born February 19, 1927, in Grand Rapids, to Adrian Thomas and Dorothy A. (nee Verhey) DeFouw.

She grew up in Grand Rapids, where she attended Union High School, and was later graduated from Rudyard High School after moving to the Upper Peninsula.

She married Eino W. Piippo in Indiana March 8, 1948.

While living in Grandville, she attended the Bible Doctrine Church of West Michigan. She enjoyed reading, knitting, quilting, and handiwork.

Mrs. Piippo is survived by two sons and their families, Edwin Piippo and Kim Ireland and Thomas and Kris Piippo, all of Rudyard; two daughters and their families, Linda Bieszk of Temperance and Donna and Sam Baughman of Grand Rapids; 12 grandchildren, Debra, Darrin, Fred, Valerie, Ed, Kevin, Adam, Melissa, Stacie, Ben, Timothy, and Rebecca; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother and his family, Matthew DeFouw of Florida, and three sisters and their families, Carol Rosa of Holland, and Mary Gillhespy and Sharon Zopff of Florida.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother, Agnes DeFouw; her husband, Eino; a sonin law, Fred Bieszk; one brother, Robert DeFouw, and one grandson, Timothy Vickers.

Services will be Saturday, February 4, at 2 p.m. at Matthysse-Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home on 4145 Chicago S.W. in Grandville. The Reverend Mark A. VanDerHulst will officiate. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral.

Spring burial with a graveside service will be at North Rudyard cemetery in Rudyard.

Memorial donations may be directed to Rudyard Area Education Foundation, P.O. Box 394, Rudyard Michigan 49780.

Reamer Galer Funeral Home of Pickford assisted the family.

Ruth Johnson

Ruth Johnson of Allenville worked many years for “Bubs” and Marge Tamlyn at the former Danny’s restaurant (now known as the Driftwood) in St. Ignace. She also worked for 16 years for the Curio Fair on west US-2 in St. Ignace.

Mrs. Johnson died Friday, January 27, 2006, at Mackinac Straits Long Term Care Facility in St. Ignace. She had suffered a stroke in April 2005, and had been in declining health since then.

She was born February 25, 1915, in Allenville, to Adam L. and Anna Louise (nee Soblaskey) Litzner. Her twin sister, Rose Dahlstrom, died 32 days earlier than Mrs. Johnson, December 25, 2005.

She married the Reverend Alfred Johnson in 1938 in Allenville. He was an Assembly of God clergyman, and they lived in Sister Bay, Wisconsin, on the Door Peninsula, and also in Kenosha, Wisconsin. They retired in 1956, and Mr. Johnson preceded her in death in 1968. Following her husband’s death, Mrs. Johnson then lived with her twin sister in Allenville.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by six siblings and their families, Walter and Gert Litzner of St. Ignace, George and Trish Litzner of Moran, Eddie Litzner of Moran, Albert and Margie Litzner of Bay City, Art and Ruby Litzner of San Antonio, Texas, and LaVerne Shimkovitz of Allenville, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Helen, who died at birth, Margaret Jackson in 1986, and Rose Dahlstrom in December 2005.

Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held for both Mrs. Johnson and Rose Dahlstrom in the spring.

Dodson Funeral Home of St. Ignace is assisting the family with arrangements.

William Boahbedason

William Boahbedason of St. Ignace died early Monday morning, January 30, 2006, at Mackinac Straits Health Hospital and Health Center in St. Ignace.

He was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

Arrangements will be with Dodson Funeral Home of St. Ignace and are incomplete.

Martin Peterson

Martin C. Peterson, 67, passed away at his home in Racine, Wisconsin, Sunday, January 22, 2006.

He was born in Moran to Martin and Gladys (nee Galerno) Peterson.

Mr. Peterson married Marlis Pecore in Waukegan, Illinois May 19, 1973.

He lived in Racine for 43 years, working for Racine Steel Castings for 20 years.

Due to ill health, Mr. Peterson retired in 1982.

He is survived by his wife, Marlis, and their combined family, Tina, Andy, Megan, and Michaela LeCount, Tim Pecore, Scott VanSteelandt, Mitchal, Lisa, and Sasha Peterson, Pam, Jim, Jamie, and Sabrina Hampton, Jill and Dan Lynch, Judy Peterson, Natalia Scollo, Peggy, Gene, Leah, and Lindsey Zeman, and Nathan Peterson. A brother, Harold, also survives. Mr. Peterson is also survived by his mother-in-law, Gladys Mueller, a brother-in-law, Dean, and his favorite sister-in-law, Marty Mueller, numerous nieces and nephews, friends Hugh Burdick and Dorothy Wilson, Bob and Ceal Sorenson, Jim and Sandy Gedgaudas, Ron and Debbie Hart, Louis and Beverly Sorenson, Theresa Towery, his hunting buddies, and his beloved beagles.

Mr. Peterson was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Evelyn, Marval, and Shirley.

A funeral was held Tuesday, January 24, at 5 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home in Racine, with Father Mark Jones officiating. The family received friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Memorial donations may be directed to the family.

Frances Krzycki

Frances Irene Krzycki of Goetzville was known by her friends as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who dedicated her life to her family, family members said. She was a working partner on her family farm, and for her, vegetable gardening was a necessity, but planting and caring for flowers was the reward for the short growing season. Throughout her life, she enjoyed baking.

Mrs. Krzycki was 78 when she died Friday, July 29, 2005, at her home.

She was born September 21, 1926, in Kent, Ohio, to Michael and Victoria (nee Hank) Schossler.

She grew up in Ohio. She moved to Goetzville after marrying John Joseph Krzycki June 1, 1946, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Kent. "She was a beautiful person who was kind, loving and caring to neighbors, friends and family," a family member said.

She was a member of Saint Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church, the Altar Society, and served as church Eucharistic minister. She was a member of the Raber Senior Citizens, Raber AmVets Auxiliary, and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. She held several offices in these organizations over the years.

Mrs. Krzycki valued and enjoyed her Polish heritage. She and her husband, John, enjoyed the programs "Polka Time" and "The Lawrence Welk Show.”

Family members said she and her husband prayed the Rosary together each evening throughout their marriage.

She leaves a family including two sons and their families, John and Millie McCabe Krzycki of Sault Ste. Marie, and Michael and Darlene Michalski Krzycki of Goetzville; four daughters and their families, Mary and Alistair McKay of Sault Ste. Marie, Dolores and David Roberts of Avon, Illinois, Catherine and Ken Fraley of Pinehurst, North Carolina, and Helen and John Parsons of Good Hope, Illinois; 14 grandchildren and their families, Jackie and Rick Perron, Melanie and Miguel Mendez, Regina Pope, David and Shelly Roberts, Jeff and Lisa Roberts, Justin and Lynette Roberts, Kenny Fraley, Christopher and Amie Fraley, John and Brandy Parsons, Victoria and Eric Robb, Melissa Parsons, Lynn and Rebecca Krzycki-Bumstead, Michael and Tamera Krzycki, and Diana Krzycki; 19 great-grandchildren, Rob and David Shields, Ricky and Lindsay Perron, Colton, Nathaniel, Josiah, Naomi, Jared, Emily, Aaron and Madelyn Roberts, Colette and Tavish Fraley, Zachariah and Ariana Parsons, Aaron and Grace Krzycki, and Trale Bumstead. She is survived by four sisters and their families, Angeline and Vernon Clapp of Tennessee, Marjorie and Gordon Tomko of Kent, Ohio, Bertha Kempf of Clarkston, Ohio, and Carolyne and Fred King of Garretsville, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, May 17, 2005; her parents; two grandchildren, Lisa Pope and Jeremy Roberts; two sisters, Mary Settle and Martha Kirkland; and two brothers, Michael and John Schossler.

A Rosary service was Monday, August 1, followed by visitation at Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday, August 2, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church in Goetzville. Father Theodore Brodeur was the celebrant.

Burial will be in St. Stanislaus cemetery, next to the church in Goetzville.

Contributions in memory of Mrs. Krzycki can be made to the St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church-Handicap Entrance Building Fund, 12841 E. Traynor Road, Goetzville Michigan 49736, or to Hospice of Chippewa County, 508 Ashmun Street, Suite 120, Sault Ste. Marie Michigan 49783.

Aletha Smith

Aletha W. Smith, 87, of Newberry owned and operated Sonny’s Cafe in Newberry with her husband for more than 20 years before becoming a cook at Camp Nakomis and Camp Shawano in the Houghton Lake area for 17 years. Mrs. Smith died Sunday, July 31, 2005, at Newberry Assisted Living Facility.

She was born December 20, 1917, in Newberry to Robert L. and Annie (nee McKay) Smith.

She was graduated from Newberry High School in the class of 1935.

She married Leo G. Smith, and together they owned and operated Sonny’s Cafe. They later both went to work for the State of Michigan, where she was a camp cook.

Mrs. Smith returned to Newberry in 1987. Her husband died in 1989.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newberry, the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, and the Newberry Elks Lodge 1705.

She enjoyed playing cards and had a passion for painting landscapes in oils and acrylics, family members said.

She is survived by two sons and their families, Bob and Donna of Sault Ste. Marie and Daniel and Lois of Caledonia; one daughter, Anne Parker of McMillan; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and 12 brothers and sisters.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, August 6, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Newberry.

Reverend Jack Kolbe officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Memorials may be directed to the Tahquamenon Education Foundation.

Beaulieu Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Lola Kaczor

Lola M. Kaczor, 74, died Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at her home in Goodrich.

She was born in Cedarville March 10, 1931, to Norman and Lila (nee Smith) Solomonson.

She is survived by four children and their families, Linda Weir of Sault Ste. Marie, Julie and Dave Jankowski of LaSalle, Judy Pelehos of Dundee, and Debra and Kurt Allen of Goodrich, 11 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore, and a son, Norman.

Services were Wednesday evening, July 27, at the Dryer Funeral Home in Holly.

Father Gary McGinnis officiated.

Burial was in Cedar cemetery in Cedarville, Friday, July 29.

Memorial donations may be made to Genesys Hospice at 7280 S. State Road, Goodrich Michigan 48438.

Walter Price

Walter Price, a lifelong resident of Engadine, worked for 50 years as a self-employed carpenter until his retirement. He was a charter member of Farm Bureau, a member of the Engadine and Newberry Lions Club, and a former member of the Garfield Township Ambulance Corps.

Mr. Price was 89 when he died Sunday, July 31, 2005, at the Luce County Annex in Newberry, where he had been a resident since November, 2004.

He was born April 6, 1916, in Engadine, to Gottlieb and Olga (nee Friedensdorf) Price. He married the former Ethel Bessler August 30, 1941, in Engadine. He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Engadine, where he served as a chairperson for 40 years. He also was a church elder and Sunday school teacher for several years. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, photography, and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel; three children and their families, Janet and Charles Huff of Hawaiian Gardens, California, June Price of Engadine, and Walt and Joann Price of Chandler, Arizona; two grandchildren, Lance and Ryan Huff; a brother and his family, Osker and Midge Price of Newberry; three sisters and their families, Bert Kramer of West Palm Beach, Florida, Wanda and John Powell of Alpena, and Elsie Pershinske of Newberry.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings, Ed Price, Erna McNeill, Martha Sinkus, and Leona Summers.

Services will be Friday, August 5, at 11 a.m., at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Engadine. Pastor Arthur Bode will officiate.

Friends may call at the church Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

Interment will follow at the Bethlehem Lutheran cemetery.

Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry assisted in the family with arrangements.
