KARL A. LUCKHARDT

Chelsea

Karl A. Luckhardt, 80, of Chelsea died Sept. 14, 2005, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. He was born Jan. 7, 1925, in Lodi Township the son of Otto and Ida (Herter) Luckhardt.

Mr. Luckhardt retired from the Chelsea Chrysler Proving Grounds in 1980 after 28 years of service. He also worked as an independent mechanic for many years.

He enjoyed plowing snow on the sidewalks for his neighbors for more than 35 years.

On June 17, 1950, he married Constance Freysinger in Chelsea, and she preceded him in death Nov. 13, 2004.

Survivors include brothers-in-law Walter (Dolores) Freysinger of Chelsea and Robert "Bud" (Joyce) Freysinger of Grass Lake, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Erma Marshall and Ruth Dobson.

A funeral was held Saturday at Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea. The Rev. Robert Freysinger officiated. Burial followed at Bethlehem cemetery in Ann Arbor.

The family received friends at the funeral home Friday.

Memorial contributions may be made to Parkinson Foundation and Alzheimer's Association.

ALVIN ALBERT SALOW

Dexter

Alvin Albert Salow, 79, of Dexter died unexpectedly Sept. 18, 2005, at his home. He was born Feb. 15, 1926, in Monroe.

Mr. Salow was employed by King-Seeley and retired from both the DaimlerChrysler Corp. and GT Products.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 2154, American Legion Post 557 and was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Salow enjoyed golfing, football and drawing, and he loved to invent, create and build things for his friends and family.

He was a loving father, grandfather, and a caring friend who enjoyed spending time and being playful with his family and friends. His sense of humor and playful teasing will be greatly missed by everyone, his family said.

Mr. Salow was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harold Salow; sister, Julia Bassett; grandson, Bryan Klapperich; and his wife, Mary, of 50 years, in March of 2000.

Survivors include his best friend and companion, Kathy Loy of Dexter; three daughters, Mary (Ted) Klapperich of Belhaven, N.C., Lori (Don) Cubberly of Ann Arbor and Dori (Butch) Gross of Dexter; and his son, Danny (Tina) Salow of Grass Lake.

He is also survived by his six grandchildren, Aaron Klapperich, Brandi Klapperich, James McNutt, Jacob Gross, Justin Gross and Sierra Birchmeier-Salow.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial visitation was held yesterday for family and friends at the Hosmer-Muehlig Funeral Chapel in Dexter.

A private family service will be held Saturday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund.

JOHN B. "JACK" MORANVILLE

Saline

John B. "Jack" Moranville, 84, of Saline died Sept. 7, 2005, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Saline.

Mr. Moranville was a loving husband of 63 years to Kate. He retired from R&B; Machine Tool in 1984.

Mr. Moranville was a past commander and lifetime honorary member of Saline American Legion Post 322 and member of the 40 and 8.

Survivors include three children, John (Kim) Moranville of Granada Hills, Calif., Nanette Cooper of Ann Arbor and Cathy (Dan) Yoder of Tecumseh; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, Robert.

Visitation was Sunday and the funeral was held Monday at Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home in Saline.

IDA FORSTER NEAL

Chelsea

Ida Forster Neal, 96, of Chelsea died Aug. 25, 2005, in her home. She was born April 1, 1909, in Cedar Gap, Mo., the daughter of Franklin T. and Agnes (Gaston) Forster.

Mrs. Neal was a graduate of Drury College, now Drury University, in Springfield, Mo. Before coming to Chelsea, she lived in Beloit, Kansas; Springfield, Mo., Ferndale; and Farmington.

Teaching was Mrs. Neal's life and love, and gardening was a great passion. She was a member of the North Congregational Christian Church in Farmington Hills.

On Feb. 2, 1932, she married Herbert Roland Neal Sr., and he preceded her in death Nov. 13, 1981.

Survivors include two sons, James (Harriet) Neal of Prescott, Ariz., and David (Karen) Neal of Chelsea; two daughters, Susan (Clyde) Goodwin of Rocky Hill, N.J., and Marcella (Robert) Kusch of Piscataway, N.J.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Herbert R. Neal Jr.; two brothers, Richard and Kenneth Forster; two sisters, Catherine Bolenski and Dorothy Wood.

A memorial service was held Tuesday at North Congregational Christian Church in Farmington Hills. The Rev. Mark Jensen officiated. Burial was at Glen Eden Lutheran Memorial Park in Livonia.

The family received friends Monday at Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea. Memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church of Chelsea, Parkinson's Foundation or Drury University.

RICHARD W. FOUTY

Chelsea

Richard W. Fouty, 73, of Chelsea died Aug. 26, 2005, at his home. He was born Dec. 12, 1931, in Jackson the son of Verl and Pearl (Skinner) Fouty.

Mr. Fouty had lived in the area most of his life and retired from the Chelsea Milling Co. as foreman after 38 years. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Inverness Country Club and recently received life membership status.

He enjoyed fishing in the Great Lakes, playing cards, watching Tiger baseball, traveling to Florida in the winter months, and working at Lake Forrest Golf Club mowing grass.

On Nov. 19, 1955, he married Dorothy Salyer, and she preceded him in death Sept. 5, 2003.

Surviving are two sons, Danny (Becky) Allen of Grass Lake and Michael (Amy) Fouty of Chelsea; two brothers, Alva (Delores) Fouty of Chelsea and Wallace Fouty of Jackson; and two sisters, Inez (Rick) Bunton of Ann Arbor and Gloria Logan of Michigan Center.

Also surviving are five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Helen Fouty of Ann Arbor; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Norm and Gordon Fouty.

A funeral was held Monday at Stockbridge Church of Christ. The Rev. Larrel Whitaker officiated. Burial was at Oak Grove cemetery in Chelsea.

Memorial contributions may be made to Stockbridge Church of Christ or the American Cancer Society.

The family received friends at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea.

PHYLLIS E. PASSOW

Chelsea

Phyllis E. Passow, 78, Chelsea, died Aug. 25, 2005, in her home. She was born April 3, 1927, in Chelsea, the daughter of George G. and Mildred L. (Hieber) Hopper.

Mrs. Passow was a member of North Sharon Baptist Church. She was a registered nurse who worked at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.

On Nov. 24, 1948, she married Donald J. Passow in Chelsea, and he preceded her in death Oct. 18, 2003.

Survivors include three daughters, Shannon Darnold of Jackson, Felicia (Mark) Borton of Ann Arbor and Camille (Todd) Bauer of Oakdale, Conn.; three sons, Norman "Darryl" (Terrie) of Jackson, Jon Kevin of Tampa, Fla., and Glenn of Ypsilanti; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Patricia Straub of Grass Lake.

She was also preceded in death by two children, Crystal Passow and Donald G. Passow.

A funeral was held Monday at Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea. The Rev. Bob Toler officiated. Burial followed at North Sharon cemetery in Sharon Township.

The family received friends at the funeral home Saturday and Sunday.

Memorial contributions may be made to North Sharon Baptist Church.

BRIANA NICHELL LOO

Dexter

Briana Nichell Loo, 19, of Dexter ended her long battle with brain cancer Aug. 24, 2005. She was born Oct. 6, 1985, in Park Ridge, Ill.

Her beautiful soul was an inspiration to every life she touched.

Miss Loo now resides with God, her Grandma Onie and Uncle Danny and all the other angels who passed before her, her family said.

Miss Loo was a 2004 honors graduate from Dexter High School. She was a member of the National Honor Society and Women in Science, and an award-winning equestrian who lettered as a member of the Dexter High School equestrian team with her horse, Parker.

Miss Loo planned to attend Grand Valley State University in 2004 as a pre-med major. It was her goal to achieve a medical degree in honor of the nurses and doctors who cared for her throughout her illness.

Miss Loo hoped to share her experiences with other children afflicted with cancer. She spent many hours as a volunteer on the pediatric cancer ward of the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital at the University of Michigan, and as an enthusiastic volunteer for the Special Olympics and the American Red Cross blood drive.

Miss Loo is survived by her parents, Dixie and Michael Loo, and her brother, Matthew Loo of Dexter; grandparents, Wallace and Anne Loo of Honolulu, John and Georgene Leap of Phoenix, and Richard and Carol Capps of St. George, Utah.

She is also survived by loving godparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

A funeral Mass was held Tuesday at St Andrew's Catholic Church in Saline. Interment followed at the Washtenong Memorial Park in Ann Arbor.

A wake was held Monday at the Borek, Jennings Funeral Home in Hamburg.

DONALD N. PORATH

Chelsea

Donald N. Porath, 78, died Aug. 13, 2005, at his home. He was born Jan. 7, 1927, in Dexter Township the son of Lawrence and Regina (Jerde) Porath.

Mr. Porath had attended North Lake United Methodist Church for several years and helped build the social center behind the sanctuary. He was well known in the area for his masonry and contracting skills.

Mr. Porath enjoyed hunting and fishing, but most of all he loved his family, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

For 26 years, Mr. Porath worked as a machine operator for the Dana Corp. in Chelsea. In addition, he was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy from December 1944 to July 1946.

On July 17, 1948, he married Mary J. Edinger and she survives. Also surviving are two children, Kathy (Roger) Heckaman of Norvell and David (Michal) Porath of Ann Arbor; three brothers, Warren Sr. (Rosetta) Porath of Chelsea, Larry (Janet) Porath of Houghton Lake and Harold (Joan) Porath of Munith; four grandchildren, Christina Moore, Eric Heckaman, Ben Porath and Jon Porath; and two great-grandchildren, Brittney and Macy Moore.

He was preceded in death by one child, Douglas Porath, and one brother, Royce Porath.

Private graveside services were held at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Jackson. The Rev. Alice Sheffield officiated.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, North Lake United Methodist Church or Paws With a Cause.

Arrangements were by Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea.

ROGER A. HILTS

Horton

Roger A. Hilts, 53, of Horton died suddenly Aug. 1, 2005.

Mr. Hilts, affectionately known as "Doctor of Cars" was a natural mechanic before his teen years, rebuilding his first Corvette rear end at age 12. He was serving on the board of directors for The Big 9 Club and was active in his daughters' 4-H club. Recently, he restored a 1968 Z28 with his son.

Mr. Hilts was dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed, his family said.

He is survived by his wife, Shawn, of 19 years; one son, Johnny (Sandra) Hilts of Villarcia, Ga.; three daughters, Brandy, Kallie and Lindsie Hilts, all of Horton; one granddaughter, Brittnay; one brother, Norman (Suzanne) Hilts of Chelsea; two sisters, Rose Aganon of Kurtstown, Hawaii, and Loretta (Mike) Roskowski of Chelsea; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vern and Kathryn Hilts.

A funeral was held Aug. 5 at the J.L. Watson Funeral Chapel in Jackson. The Rev. Andrew Dunne officiated.

Interment was at Vermont cemetery in Chelsea.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
