SANDRA (AMBURGEY) STANDER

Vassar

Formerly of Dexter

Sandra (Amburgey) Stander of Vassar, formerly of Dexter, died Aug. 12, 2005. She is survived by her husband, Bill, and their children and grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Martin Funeral Home in Vassar.

ROY "RICHIE" CARLSON

Manchester

Roy "Richie" Carlson, 74, of Manchester died Aug. 9, 2005, at his home in Manchester. He was born Sept. 16, 1930, in Chelsea the son of Willard A. and Dora B. (LaBarge) Carlson.

On July 16, 1959, he married Shirley (Slade) in Chelsea, and she survives.

Mr. Carlson enjoyed the outdoors hunting, fishing, camping, trimming trees and ridding horses in the Chelsea fair parade.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Patricia Marie (Todd) Crosby of Woodbridge Va., Linda Lee Carlson of Napoleon and Tina Jean Carlson of Manchester; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Private graveside services were held this week at Oak Grove cemetery.

Arrangements were by the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home.

SUZANNE PATRICIA VALENCIA

Battle Creek

Formerly of Dexter

Suzanne Patricia Valencia, 59, of Battle Creek, formerly of Dexter and Whitmore Lake, died Aug. 2, 2005, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital after a brief illness.

Surviving are two daughters, Sarah A. Gunderson McGibbon of Whitmore Lake and Patricia M. (Lance) Gunderson Johnson of Battle Creek; a son, Daniel C. MacDonald of Ann Arbor; four grandchildren; and a brother, James (Carol) Nuttle of Mecosta.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

MICHAEL DAVID MOSES

Hamburg

Michael David Moses, 47, of Hamburg, formerly of Ann Arbor, died Aug. 4, 2005, at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. He was born July 26, 1958, in Detroit, the son of Michael and JoAnn (Woosley) Moses.

On Oct. 18, 1986, he married Patricia Lynn Luck at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hamburg.

Mr. Moses enjoyed boating, reading, music, spending time at the family's cottage up north, and he was an avid history buff. He worked as a financial manager at the Department of Security at the University Hospitals for 26 years.

Mr. Moses was the beloved husband of Patricia L. Moses of Ann Arbor; dear son of Mike and JoAnn Moses of Brighton; fond brother of Jacquline Luttermoser of Brighton; nephew of Sarah Versali; son-in-law of Janet Luck of Chelsea; and brother-in-law of Robert Luck, Dan Luck and Julie Lazarz.

Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

A funeral was held Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hamburg. Burial was at Fairview cemetery in Brighton.

Memorial contributions may be to the Hemophilia Foundation of Michigan, 1921 W. Michigan Ave., Ypsilanti, MI 48197.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Keehn Funeral Home in Brighton.

RICHARD BAYLIS

North Hollywood, Calif.

Formerly of Webster Township

Richard "Dick" Kenny Baylis, 84, of North Hollywood, Calif., died July 29, 2005. He was born Oct. 20, 1920, in Webster Township.

Mr. Baylis attended the University of Michigan and lived in Greenville for a number of years. During World War II, he served in the Belding National Guard's medical unit, including 2 1/2 years in New Guinea with the 32nd Red Arrow Division. He had his own business in North Hollywood.

Mr. Baylis was preceded in death by his father and mother, F. Ray and Jessie (Kenny) Baylis, and sisters, Kay Sorensen and Jean McDonald.

He is survived by two brothers and one sister, Ross (Shirley) Baylis of Traverse City, Nancy (Curt) Bradley of Greenville and Joe (Shirley) Baylis of Menlo Park, Calif., and a number of nieces and nephews.

A family memorial service is planned for later this year. His cremated remains will be buried in the Webster Church cemetery.

FRIEDA D. SCHMITZ-NEILLY

Chelsea

Frieda D. Schmitz-Neilly, 87, of Chelsea died Aug. 4, 2005, at the Stockbridge Country Manor. She was born Aug. 31, 1917, in Chelsea, the daughter of George and Ruth (Burgess) Hafley.

Mrs. Schmitz-Neilly loved to play cards, dance and listen to country music. All of her grandchildren received a handmade afghan made with love.

She was a wonderful mother and will be missed by all, her family said.

Surviving are three daughters, Loretta (Paul ) Beal of Stockbridge, Delores (Alva) Fouty of Chelsea and Nancy (Robert) Guenther of Bridgewater; her stepchildren, Virginia (Phillip) Horn of Knoxville, Tenn., Mary Jane Neilly of Ann Arbor, Diane (Spiros) Mourikis of Greece, Margie Stewart of Ann Arbor, Robert Neilly of Pennsylvania and David Neilly of New York; two sisters, Hazel DeLong of Florida, Genevieve (James) Owens Sr. of Grand Blanc; and one sister-in-law, Dolores Hafley of Chelsea.

She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Mark (Theresa) Beal, Tim (Sandy) Beal, Marcia (Jim) Bisonet, Denise (James) Estle, Robin (Philip) Bowerman, Sue (Matt) Brus, Jacqueline (Brian) Lanz and Matthew Guenther; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; step-grandchildren; and step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Raymond A. Schmitz and William R. Neilly; three brothers, Carlton Hafley LaVern "Porky" Hafley and Albert Hafley Sr.; and two sisters, Jean Heydlauff and Gladys Babcock.

A funeral was held Saturday at Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea. The Rev Joy Barrett officiated. Burial was at Oak Grove cemetery in Chelsea.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Stockbridge Country Manor or Great Lakes Hospice.

ILA V. PHILLIPS

Chelsea

Formerly of Romeo

Ila V. Phillips, 94, of Chelsea died Aug. 3, 2005, at the Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born July 28, 1911, in Romeo, the daughter of James Arthur Parker and Nellie A. Remington.

Mrs. Phillips graduated from Romeo High School in 1929, and married William Phillips in 1933. They remained lifelong residents of Romeo and were members of the First

Methodist Church. They were married for 72 years.

Mrs. Phillips was an avid participant in Romeo community activities, leading school, Scouting, church, and community groups over the years.

She traveled widely with her husband in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Central America, as well as Thailand and China, and the countries of Western Europe.

Mrs. Phillips is survived by three children, Merlin J. (Guadalupe) of Debary, Fla., Arlene P. (John) Shy of

Ann Arbor and James F. (Naomi) of Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Laura A. Daniel, Kathleen K. Phillips and Jonathan B. Phillips; and one great-granddaughter, Angela A. Daniel.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William; her grandson, Brian Phillips; her brother, Ford Parker; and her sister, Vivien Zilkie.

A memorial service was held Saturday at the Roth-Muir Funeral Home in Romeo. Interment followed in Bruce cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Chelsea Retirement Community.

JOANNE MARIE BOBO

Gregory

Formerly of Dexter

Joanne Marie (Rosentreter) Bobo, 52, of Gregory, formerly of Dexter, died July 26, 2005, at the University of Michigan Hospital. She was born April 3, 1953, in Ann Arbor.

Mrs. Bobo graduated from Dexter High School in 1971. She started a family of two children. She enjoyed attending all of her children's activities, never missing a school field trip, wrestling meet or horse show.

Mrs. Bobo was a Girl Scout leader and a Sunday school teacher. She had just started wool rug making, and quickly became an extremely talented artist.

She loved spending time outdoors, which was apparent at the new home she built in Gregory. When constructing her home in the woods, she made sure that the builder saved every tree possible. She also enjoyed spending time outdoors on a pontoon boat on Portage Lake with the Klave family.

Mrs. Bobo was very well known for her baking abilities, especially her cut-out sugar cookies. They were a frequent request from all of her friends. Most of all, she loved spending time with her two dogs, Sparky and Waldo.

Survivors include her two children, Andrew (Nicole) Bobo and Tracey Bobo; her sister, Cheryl Eaton; and her mother, Marilyn Rosentreter.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday at St. Andrew's United Church of Christ in Dexter. A luncheon followed the service.

Funeral arrangements were by Hosmer-Muehlig Funeral Chapel in Dexter.

VIVIAN I. MORCOM

Dexter

Vivian I. Morcom, 79, of Dexter died July 28, 2005, at her home with her family by her side. She was born July 17, 1926, in Elkton, the daughter of John Wesley and Carrie (Gauscho) Cox. She lived in Dexter for more than 38 years.

On June 12, 1946, she married Clarence Morcom in Detroit, and he preceded her in death Jan. 24, 2004.

Survivors include two sons, Tom of Washington and Ronald of Georgia; five grandchildren, Crystal Miller, Scott Morcom, Angela Naillon, Megan and Melissa Morcom; two great-grandchildren, Emily and Jacob Miller; and one sister, Thelma (Ronald) Garber of Gladwin.

She was preceded in death by a son, Larry Morcom, in 1999.

According to her wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no services. Burial will be at Oak Grove East in Chelsea.

Memorial contributions may be made to Arbor Hospice, 2366 Oak Valley Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48103.

Arrangements were by Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea.

JESSICA BULLEN

Madison, Wis.

Formerly of Dexter

Jessica Bullen, 29, of Madison, Wis., formerly of Dexter, died July 3, 2005, from injuries suffered in a June 30 bicycle accident. At the time of her death, she was surrounded by those who loved her.

Ms. Bullen accomplished a great deal in her short life. She grew up in Dexter and graduated from Dexter High School in 1994. She lived in Chicago and traveled extensively before settling in Madison.

Mrs. Bullen graduated with honors from Earlham College in 1998 and finished her graduate work in the Urban and Regional Planning Department at the University of Wisconsin this spring. In recognition of her contributions to the department in 2005, she received the Outstanding Student of the Year award from the urban planning faculty.

Ms. Bullen's thoughtful and caring nature was apparent in her relationships with her friends and family, as well as in her professional activities. She delighted those close to her with her youthful exuberance, playfulness and curiosity about the world around her.

Ms. Bullen poured her unlimited energy into local activities, such as the Quann community garden, promotion of public transportation and bicycle use. In her free time, she enjoyed riding her bicycle, cooking, photography and exploring the outdoors.

Ms. Bullen will be remembered by her partner, Michael Fay; her father, William; her mother, Shirley; her sister, Laura; her grandmother, Elsie Bullen-Klepper; and many other friends and family members.

Ms. Bullen's life was celebrated July 6 at Giddings Park on Lake Mendota in Madison and on the beach at 77th St. in Ocean City, Md., July 9.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those interested make Wisconsin a better place to bike by giving a donation in Ms. Bullen's memory to The Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin, which can be reached at 1-608-251-4456 or www.bfw.org/new_bfw/ about/giving.php.

MARGARET L. KOCH

Iowa City

Margaret Lucy Schoenberg Koch, 82, of Iowa City died July 17 2005, at her home. She was born March 10, 1923, in Addison Township, the daughter of Arthur and Merle (Kimball) Schoenberg.

Following graduation from Imlay City High School in 1940, she attended Michigan Normal College, now Eastern Michigan University, for two years. Having received her teacher's certificate, she taught school for one year at the Hand School in Wayne County.

On June 24, 1943, she married Harold Koch at St. John's Lutheran Church in Capac.

After raising their three children, at the age of 46, Mrs. Koch returned to college to earn a bachelor's degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1968. With her degree, she resumed her teaching career in 1968 at Chelsea schools, teaching middle school and then retiring in 1986.

The Kochs retired and moved to Iowa to be closer to their family in 1986. They moved to California in 1999 and returned to Iowa in 2001.

Mrs. Koch was an active member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Iowa City, where she was involved in the Adult Bible Study Group and the Rosella Kameo Circle. She was also a member of the Michigan Association Retired School Personnel.

Her passions in life were solving jigsaw puzzles, working on cross stitch, playing cards and reading, especially mystery novels. But foremost, and what brought her most joy, was her family and her faith.

Mrs. Koch's family includes her husband, Harold, of 62 years; two sons, Karl (Cathy) Divine-Koch of Iowa City and Keith (Sue) Koch of Oxnard, Calif.; a daughter, Kathy (Jerry) Mundt of Cedar Falls, Iowa; six grandchildren, Ben (Paula) Koch of The Colony, Texas, Jeff Koch of Portland, Cory Mundt of Cedar Falls, Anthony Casello-Koch of Atascadero, Calif., Sharon Hembree of Ventura, Calif., and Anna Ellenberger of Iowa City, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Vincent Koch, Morena Koch and Maya Koch; and three brothers, Howard Schoenberg of Inlay, Donald Schoenberg of Chelsea and Richard Schoenberg of Shelby Township.

Mrs. Koch was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Carl Schoenberg.

A funeral services was held yesterday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Iowa City. Burial will be later at Oak Grove cemetery in Chelsea.

Visitation was Tuesday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City.

Memorial contributions may be made to Iowa City Hospice or Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.
