GARY PAUL BURKHARDT

Manchester

Gary Paul Burkhardt, 55, of Manchester died June 27, 2005, at Arbor Hospice following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born June 28, 1949, in Saline, the son of Carlton and Edna (Wenk) Burkhardt.

Mr. Burkhardt graduated from Manchester High School in 1967. He was a lifetime member of Zion Lutheran Church and was active in Social Ministries.

He worked as a mechanic for R&B; Tools in Saline for 25 years. He also worked for Chelsea Retirement Communities for a year.

Mr. Burkhardt was the treasurer of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Washtenaw County.

On May 23, 1987, he married Wendy Elaine Eynon at Zion Lutheran Church in Chelsea, and she survives.

Other survivors include a brother, Ron (Elaine) Burkhardt of Manchester; a sister, Karen (Robert) Vedder of Ann Arbor; four nieces Debbie (Kevin) Strahle, Brenda Vedder, Diane Vedder and Kristen Vedder; a nephew, Tim (Jessica) Burkhardt; and a great-nephew, Kyle Strahle.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church in Chelsea. The Rev. Doris Sparks will officiate. Burial will follow at Zion Lutheran cemetery in Chelsea.

The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to National Alliance for the Mentally Ill or Zion Lutheran Church.

Arrangements were by Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea.

CHRISTINE CAROLINE HEYDLAUFF

Chelsea

Christine Caroline Heydlauff, 94, of Chelsea died June 27, 2005, in Chelsea. She was born Oct. 28, 1910, in Sharon Township, the daughter of Lewis and Sarah Anna (Uphouse) Dresselhouse.

Mrs. Heydlauff was a member of Salem Grove United Methodist Church. She was a homemaker and volunteer at Chelsea Community Hospital.

She married Clifford G. Heydlauff Nov. 19, 1932, and he preceded her in death Jan 19, 1973.

Survivors include three sons, Jerald (Shirley) of Dexter, James (Nancy) of Grass Lake and Ned (Sally) of Sturgis; a daughter, Ann (James) Alexander of Grass Lake; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Cora Dolan; and two brothers, Arthur and Vernon Dresselhouse.

A funeral will be held 1 p.m. today at Salem Grove United Methodist Church. The Rev. Carolyn Harris will officiate. Burial will follow at Salem Grove cemetery.

The family received friends Tuesday and yesterday at Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea.

Memorial contributions may be made to Salem Grove Church or Chelsea Community Hospital Auxiliary.

MARK J. NAGEL

Dexter

Mark J. Nagel, 41, of Dexter died June 21, 2005, at the University of Michigan Hospital. He was born Aug. 2, 1963, in Saline to Luther and Mary (Marion) Nagel. He married Nancy Geer July 29, 1994, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Saline.

Mr. Nagel is survived by his wife; his parents; sisters, Ann (Dave) Latowski of Tecumseh and Faith Nagel of Ann Arbor; and several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Mr. Nagel enjoyed family time, bicycle riding and fishing. He was a loving, generous, kind-hearted person who enjoyed helping others.

Mr. Nagel was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Saline. He worked as an automobile mechanic, but most recently was a handyman.

Visitation was held last Thursday and Friday at the Hosmer-Muehlig Funeral Chapel in Dexter.

A funeral was held Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Saline.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church or U of M Trauma Burn Center.

CARL E. DELANEY

Dexter

Carl E. Delaney, 82, of Dexter died June 23, 2005, from complications related to Alzheimer's disease. He was born June 5, 1923, to Edward and Elsie (Schwager) Delaney.

Mr. Delaney was a graduate of St. Thomas High School. He served and was honorably discharged from the Army during World War II. In addition, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 2959 in Dexter.

Mr. Delaney retired from the city of Ann Arbor Utilities Department after 37 years of service.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice "Bonnie, " of 58 years; four sons, John of Ann Arbor, Jim (Jane) of Jackson, Brian (Meg) and Tim of Ann Arbor; five grandsons; and one great-grandson.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dexter. The family received visitors Sunday at the Hosmer-Muehlig Funeral Chapel and a scripture service was held in the evening.

THOMAS F. SMITH

Ann Arbor

Formerly of Chelsea

Thomas F. Smith, 76, of Ann Arbor, formerly of Lincoln Park, Chelsea and Tecumseh, died June 24, 2005, in Ann Arbor as a result of complications from emphysema. He was born July 29, 1928, in Lincoln Park, the son of Thomas C. and Leah C. (Teitsworth) Smith.

Mr. Smith graduated from Chelsea High School in 1946. He was a member of Tecumseh Masons Lodge 69 and Chapter 42 of the Royal Arch Masons. He also was a former member of the Chelsea United Methodist Church.

Mr. Smith was the mainframe computer supervisor 19 years at Tecumseh Products and 20 years at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and used his woodworking skills to make elaborate dollhouses for his granddaughters.

On May 4, 1973, he married Delores L. Fodale in Chelsea. She preceded him in death May 15, 2005.

Survivors include one daughter, Susan (John) Schott of Dundee; two sons, Thomas C. (Sandi) Smith of Florida and Scott (Peggy) Smith of Tecumseh; one stepdaughter, Kathleen F. Wiley of Ann Arbor; two step-sons, Stephan Fodale of Alabama and Michael (Holly) Fodale of Marquette; one sister, Shirley Smith of Chelsea; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a stepson, Daniel Fodale.

Funeral services were held yesterday at Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea. The Rev. Joy Barrett officiated. Burial followed at Oak Grove East cemetery in Chelsea.

The family received friends Tuesday.

RICHARD WILLIAM KEEZER

Las Vegas, Nev.

Formerly of Munith

Richard William Keezer, 69, of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Munith, died March 4, 2005, in Las Vegas. He was born July 19, 1935, in Chelsea, the son of Dale and Clarice (Wright) Keezer.

Mr. Keezer was a member of the First Congregational Church of Chelsea. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956.

Survivors include his son, Joseph (Kum Cha) Keezer of Las Vegas; two brothers, James (Susan) Keezer of Saline and Robert (Helen) Keezer of Minnesota; a sister, Nancy (George) Merkel of Chelsea; two grandchildren, Loni and Dale; a great-granddaughter, Michelle; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Darrow Keezer, in 1995; his sister, Doris Heller; his brother, Donald Clark; and both parents.

A memorial gathering will be held 1 p.m. June 26 at 230 Russell St. in Saline at the corner of Mills St.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church of Chelsea.

Local arrangements were by Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea.

ROBERT JAMES NICKELS SR.

Manchester

Robert James Nickels Sr., 81, of Manchester died peacefully in his sleep June 7, 2005, at Chelsea Community Hospital.

His wife, Olga Nina Nickels, preceded him in death Sept. 2, 2002, as well as their son, James Frederick Nickels May 7, 1956.

Mr. Nickels was a beloved father of seven children, Aleta Diane Lambdin (Michael) of Saline, Timothy A. Nickels (Sue) of Ann Arbor, Robert James Nickels Jr. (Mary) of Manchester, Douglas Brian Nickels (Irene) of Chelsea, Daphne Faye Wakefield (Scott) of Dexter and Frederick Thomas Nickels (Cathy) of Brooklyn; and 16 grandchildren.

Mr. Nickels was born March 16, 1924, in Los Angeles, the son of Gertrude Meta Steinke and James Harold Nickels. In 1933, his family moved to Ann Arbor, where Mr. Nickels spent much of his young adult life. He graduated Ann Arbor High School in 1942 and was drafted into the U.S. Army in January 1944.

Mr. Nickels fought in World War II as part of the 661 Tank Destroyers, which was a part of the Fighting 69th Infantry Division. In 1951, he graduated Michigan Normal College, now Eastern Michigan University, where he met his wife, Olga. He married her June 25, 1949, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ann Arbor.

The couple shared their life together in Ann Arbor and then for the past 33 years made Manchester their home. Mr. Nickels was an avid golfer his entire life, winning the Ann Arbor Men's City Tournament in 1956 at Barton Hills Country Club, where was a member.

Mr. Nickels taught his children to golf when they were old enough to hold a club. He also talked golf with all who would listen.

He was a member of the Lenawee and Tecumseh country cubs and of Peace Lutheran Church.

Mr. Nickels was a very generous and caring father. He loved to spend time with his children and especially his many grandchildren, whom will all miss him deeply.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, and leaves behind many wonderful memories.

Visitation was June 8 and 9 at Borek-Jennings Funeral Home in Manchester's Jenter Chapel. A funeral was held Friday at Peace Lutheran Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Peace Lutheran Church in Ann Arbor or Chelsea Community Hospital ICU.

VIRGINIA R. HURST

St. Petersburg, Fla.

Formerly of Ann Arbor

Virginia R. Hurst, 84, of St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Ann Arbor, died May 22, 2005, at the Largo Medical Facility in Largo, Fla. She was born June 24, 1920, in Ann Arbor the daughter of George and Hanna (Bucholz) Marsh.

In September 1943, she married Kenneth R. Hurst in Texas and he preceded her in death in 1996.

Mrs. Hurst is survived by her son, Kenwood (Dee Dee) Hurst of Chelsea, and four grandchildren Randy, Jacob, Howard and Andrew.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother and her sister.

A graveside service will be held 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at Fairview cemetery in Ann Arbor.

WILLIAM JOSEPH LEDWIDGE

Dexter

William Joseph Ledwidge, 74, OF Dexter died June 10, 2005, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. He was born Feb. 5, 1931, in Webster Township to William and Grace (Koch) Ledwidge.

Mr. Ledwidge worked for Haughton Elevator Co. for 13 years and was also a lifelong farmer. He was a NASCAR fan and had built his own stock car, which was raced at Jackson Speedway and in Toledo.

Mr. Ledwidge is survived by his three brothers, Edwin of Dexter, John of Florida and Norman of Dexter; two sisters, Marie Coy of Michigan Center and Veronica (Bill) Paddock of Dexter; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Buko, and two sisters-in-law, Billie Mae and Phyllis Ledwidge.

Visitation was Monday and the funeral service was Tuesday at the Hosmer-Muehlig Funeral Chapel in Dexter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

LORINDA C. JEDELE

Chelsea

Formerly of Gregory

Lorinda C. Jedele, 87, of Chelsea, formerly of Gregory, died June 12, 2005, at the Chelsea Retirement Community with her family surrounding her. She was born April 9, 1918, in Chelsea the daughter of Edwin W. and Mary H. (Curtis) Beutler.

Mrs. Jedele married Alvin J. Jedele Nov. 2, 1940, and he preceded her in death Jan. 15, 2003.

Survivors include three children, James L. (Nancy) Jedele, Carol Tunningley and Phyllis (Thomas) Risdon; nine grandchildren, Philip (Jenefer Willem), Julie (Matt) Desbrough, Brian (Stephanie), Sarah, David and Paul Jedele, Dan and Lori Risdon, and Garth Tunningley; and three great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Erin Jedele and Nathan Desbrough.

She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Viola Hack and Jo Chambers, and a brother-in-law, Harold Lambarth.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Alinda; son-in-law, Gerald Tunningley; two brothers and their wives, Carl (Mabel) Beutler and Leon L. (Coula) Butler; a sister and brother-in-law, Helen (Albert) Fink; a sister-in-law, Loretta Lambarth; and a brother-in-law, Ormond Jedele.

Mrs. Jedele attended Cleary College and then worked at the Argus Camera Co. in Ann Arbor, where she met Al. Moving from Saline to a farm in Dexter Township, she was a full-time farm wife. The family raised beef cattle, sheep, hay, corn and other crops.

Mrs. Jedele was a member of the Wolverine Farm Bureau. She served as deputy treasurer and was later elected treasurer of Dexter Township, serving from 1974 to 1980.

She was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Saline and then Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dexter. In addition, she was a member of Women of Faith, serving in many capacities.

Mrs. Jedele will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her love of her savior and her family was demonstrated to all who knew her and will live on as a wonderful example, her family said.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. today at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dexter. The Rev. Mark Porinsky will officiate. Burial will follow at Lodi Plains cemetery in Saline.

The family received friends yesterday at Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea.

Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church or Chelsea Retirement Community.
