MONTE R. HOWARD

Kingsford

Formerly of Jackson

Monte R. Howard, 66, of Kingsford, formerly of Jackson, died May 22, 2005, at Marquette General Hospital. He was born April 6, 1939, in Edna, Kansas, the son of the late Roscoe and Vesta (Hunt) Howard.

On Aug. 4, 1962, he married Wanda Logan in Norwalk, Calif.

Mr. Howard earned a bachelor's degree in engineering from UCLA. He worked for North American Aviation on the launch escape system for the first Apollo flight. He also worked at DaimlerChrysler AG for many years until his retirement Feb. 28, 2001.

He moved to Kingsford from Jackson in 2002.

Mr. Howard enjoyed playing bridge and belonged to many area bridge clubs. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Lodge 388.

He will be greatly missed by his dogs and cats.

Mr. Howard is survived by his wife, Wanda; and four children, Kevin (Diana) of Milan, Keith (Tammy) of Marshall, Kimberly (Kevin) Massicotte of Kingsford and Laura Bohlender of Dillon, Colo.

Also surviving is one brother, Stanley (Julie) of Bell Gardens, Calif., 11 grandchildren, Shauna, Ashley, Mitchell, Randall, Hayley, Paige, Taylor, Chad, C.J., Gerry and Michael (Kim); and one great-granddaughter, Mercedes.

Visitation will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. today at Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Masonic services will be held 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Arrangements were by Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home.

ELAINE F. (DeGROW) FERGUSON

Burbank, Calif.

Elaine F. (DeGrow) Ferguson, 57, of Burbank, Calif., died Jan. 6, 2005, in California, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Surviving are her husband, Paul; her only daughter, Heather M. Ferguson; her mother, Rose M. DeGrow of Chelsea; and her only sister, Gloria M. (John) Mitchell of Chelsea.

Also surviving are two nephews, one niece and several great-nephews and great-nieces.

Graveside services will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday at North Lake cemetery in Chelsea. The Rev. Alice Sheffield will officiate.

DOUGLAS D. WHITE

Chelsea

Douglas D. White, 44, of Chelsea died May 12, 2005, in Jackson County. He was born Feb. 7, 1961, in Ann Arbor, the son of Clarence D. and Bertha L. (Hunt) Nutt.

Mr. White was a devoted member of the Chelsea Lions Club for nearly 25 years and would graciously help anyone in need. He was employed at Polly's Market in Chelsea for the past 26 years and very much enjoyed his job and coworkers.

Mr. White attended the First Assembly of God Church in Chelsea. He could be seen routinely walking throughout Chelsea, as he loved to walk.

In his younger years, Mr. White enjoyed rocketry. He enrolled in and completed the NASA Space Camp program in Huntsville, Ala., on two occasions.

Mr. White is survived by two brothers, Donald (Peggy) Nutt of Adrian and Daniel (Peggy) Nutt of Grass Lake, and one sister, Denise (Pat) McGraw of Hartford, Wis.

Also surviving are his step-parents, Frank (Karen) White of Jackson and Evelyn Nutt of Milan; several nieces and nephews; and many dear friends in the community.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence D. Nutt and Bertha L. White, and his sister, Debra D. Nutt.

In keeping with Mr. White's wishes, there will be no services.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Chelsea Lions Club.

Arrangements were by Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home.

FLOYD L. LAYTON

Dexter

Floyd L. Layton, 96, of Dexter died May 15, 2005, at Silver Maples in Chelsea. He was born Dec. 12, 1908, the son of Floyd L. and Helen G. (Kenedy) Layton in Brownsville, Texas.

On Oct. 13, 1937, he married Alvera Moon, and she survives.

Mr. Layton was past president of the Dexter Kiwanis Club, a "Worshipful Master" of the Masons, a member of the Elks Club and Zal Grotto in Ann Arbor.

Mr. Layton also was a past Dexter Village president and supervisor of Scio Township. In his younger days, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and bowling. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially during vacations.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three children, Floyd L. (Judy) Layton of Higgins Lake, Pat (Dave) Coval of Dexter and Sandy (Bob) Briggson of Mesa, Ariz.

Also surviving are his seven grandchildren, Eric Layton of Traverse City, Erin Layton of Houghton Lake, Scott Layton of Higgins Lake, Julie (Ted) Stilber of Dexter, Michael (Dawn) Coval of East Grand Rapids, Jan (Drew) Stirton of Novi and Rob (Janice) Briggson of Brighton; nine great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Eleanor Hornbrook of Sanibel Island, Fla., Elsie Strong of Farmington Hills and Nova West of Corpus Christy, Texas.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Lewis Layton and Charles Layton, and a sister; Margaret House.

A private burial will take place at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to a hospice of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements were by the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home.

JAMES LITZINGER

Grafton, W.Va.

Formerly of Dexter

James Donald Litzinger, 75, of Grafton W.Va., died April 23, 2005, at the home of his daughter in Romulus. He was born June 18, 1929, in Grafton, the son of the late Charles A. and Rose Mary Barlow Litzinger.

Mr. Litzinger had an intense love for America and serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, stationed in Stuttgart, Germany, for three years. The American flag was one of his favorite things to see.

Mr. Litzinger's hobbies were his adored wife, followed by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He loved participating in the activities of his family and church. For 32 years, he was a church treasurer, serving first at the Dexter Gospel Church and later at the Grafton Baptist Church.

During his life, he took great enjoyment from watching University of Michigan and Pittsburgh Steelers football. In addition, he enjoyed trains and lighthouses.

To know Mr. Litzinger was to love him. His laugh, smile and sense of humor will be greatly missed by all who basked in its glow.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters and two grandchildren.

Mr. Litzinger married Janice Jeffries Litzinger of Grafton Nov. 11, 1950, loving and cherishing her for 54 years. He and his family moved to Dexter in 1961.

Mr. Litzinger worked as an assistant medical administrator at the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor. After retiring in 1985, he took a position with uniformed security at Briarwood Mall until 1993, when he retired and moved back to his hometown of Grafton, where he enjoyed sitting on his front porch drinking coffee while greeting those who passed by.

Mr. Litzinger is survived by his wife, Janice Jeffries Litzinger of Grafton, W.Va., and six children, James Michael Litzinger of Ypsilanti, Ellen (Art) Kirchoff of Romulus, Debbie (Harry) Valentine, Teresa (Dan) Martin of Gaylord, Thomas (Katie) Litzinger and Julie (Robert) Mulholland of Ann Arbor.

He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was the loving brother to six sisters and five brothers residing throughout Ohio, West Virginia and New Jersey.

Mr. Litzinger was laid to rest April 27 with military honors at the West Virginia National cemetery in Prunytown.

A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday at the Dexter Gospel Church, 2253 Baker Road. The Rev. John O'Dell will officiate.

LEE MAX HOPPE

Mooresville, N.C.

Formerly of Chelsea

Lee Max Hoppe, 71, of Mooresville, N.C., formerly of Chelsea, died April 17, 2005, at Crozier Keystone Medical Center in Upland, Pa. He was born April 13, 1934, in Chelsea, the son of the late Max Lee and Claribel Weinhold Hoppe.

Mr. Hoppe earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan and master's from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He was a mechanical engineer for Ingersoll-Rand, providing 33 years of service.

Mr. Hoppe was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church in Mooresville, where he served as Eucharist minister. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Hoppe is survived by his wife, Rose Snitzer Hoppe, of 50 years and children, Nancy LaFoy (Johnny) of Sherrills Ford, N.C., Michele (Ed) Kirkley of Blacksburg, S.C., Kathryn (Jeff) Weidner of Carmel, Ind., and Timothy (Mary) Hoppe of Wallingford, Pa.

Also surviving are his brothers, Richard Kalmbach of Gregory and William "Bill" Hoppe of Grass Lake, and grandsons, Henry and David Hoppe.

Mass of Christian Burial was held April 22 at St. Therese Catholic Church in Mooresville. Burial was at Mimosa cemetery in Davidson, N.C.

The family received friends April 21 at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home in Mooresville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lake Norman Dialysis Center, 164 Professional Park Drive, Mooresville, NC 28117.

JANICE M. RAYMOND

Chelsea

Janice M. Raymond, 52, of Chelsea died April 30, 2005, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born Feb. 16, 1953, in Ypsilanti, the daughter of Roy and Margaret (Atkinson) Herman. She married Robin J. Raymond Aug. 16, 1978, in Toledo, Ohio.

Mrs. Raymond loved the outdoors, enjoying countless hours in the sunshine, taking slow rides around the lake, kayaking and participating in her aerobic and yoga classes.

She was an active member of Immanuel Bible Church in Chelsea.

Mrs. Raymond and her family have resided in Chelsea for the past 27 years. She has had the thrill and honor of watching her children grow and prosper, becoming young adults whom she was very proud of.

Mrs. Raymond leaves to cherish her memory, her husband; her four children, Chad (Karla) Raymond of Indianapolis, Nicole White-Raymond of Ann Arbor, Robyn Raymond of Ann Arbor and Kyle Raymond of Chelsea; two grandchildren, David and Joshua; her sister, Beverly (Steve) Kayfesh of Ypsilanti; her mother-in-law, Lila Raymond of Dundee; father-in-law, Donald (Marge) Raymond of Standish; grandmother-in-law, Margaret Guoan of Standish; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Linda (Mike) Grady of Milan and Judy (Micky) Pelletier of Pinckney, David (Donna) Raymond of Tecumseh and Barbara Raymond of Adrian.

Mrs. Raymond was preceded in death by her parents and a sister-in-law, Mary Raymond.

A funeral was held yesterday at St. Mary Catholic Church. The Rev. William Turner presided and the Rev. James Gorski officiated. Burial was at Mount Olivet cemetery in Chelsea.

The family received friends Monday and Tuesday at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea and Wednesday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to an educational fund for her son, Kyle, through Chelsea State Bank.

GLADYS I. STANFIELD

Houghton Lake

Formerly of Munith

Gladys I. Stanfield, 70, of Houghton Lake, formerly of Munith, died April 28, 2005, in Grayling. She was born April 11, 1935, in Jackson, the daughter of Lloyd and Emily (Kushmaul) Harr.

Mrs. Stanfield had lived and raised her family on the farm in Munith for 39 years. She was an active member of the Munith United Methodist Church, where she also enjoyed teaching Sunday school for more than 20 years. She also served as a 4-H leader and Cub Scout Den mother for several years.

Mrs. Stanfield retired from Consumers Power in 1990 after working for 27 years as an engineering file clerk.

On Jan. 16, 1954, she married Byron J. Stanfield in Munith, and he survives her. She is also survived by one son, John Stanfield of Spring Arbor; two daughters, Judy (Mark) McDonald of Ann Arbor and Lucinda (Frank) Hughes of Hillsdale; two sisters, Neta (Fred) Mills of Chelsea and Lillian Howe of Galesburg; and four grandchildren, who her world revolved around, Aaron Goodlock, Heather McDonald, Rebecca Satterlee and Emily Satterlee.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Vaughn, and a granddaughter Katie.

A funeral was held Monday at Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home in Stockbridge. The Rev. Art Turner officiated. Burial was at Munith cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation, Alzheimer's Foundation, or Munith United Methodist Church.

ERICH GUNDERMANN

Chelsea

Erich Gundermann, 80, of Chelsea died April 18, 2005, at his home in the Chelsea Retirement Community. He was born Dec. 10, 1924, in Poland, the son of August and Arnstie (Angel) Gundermann. He married his beloved Else Helena Paetzold Dec. 12, 1950, in Koenigslutter am Elm, Germany.

Erich and Else moved from Germany to Ann Arbor in 1957 and were active members of the German Park. They moved to Chelsea in 1970. Sadly, Else preceded him in death Aug. 18, 1994.

Survivors include a stepson, Peter Leifke of Braunschweig, Germany; one granddaughter, Anja Leifke; and a nephew, Willi Gundermann.

Mr. Gundermann loved life, especially nature and being outdoors on his scooter, "The Cadillac."

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Gundermann's name to Chelsea Retirement Community. Funds will be used to further beautify the grounds of Chelsea Retirement Community, which he loved, with some help from his special gardening pal, Nancy Wiley.

Arrangements were by Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea.
