KATHLEEN A. ARNETT

Chelsea

Kathleen A. Arnett, 74, of Chelsea, died peacefully April 22, 2005, surrounded by her entire family at the Saline hospital after a brief stay at the Evangelical Home in Saline. She was born July 28, 1930, in Chelsea the daughter of Walter and Anita (Gramer) Eschelbach.

On Sept. 19, 1953, she married Claude Arnett, and he survives.

Mrs. Arnett was a lifelong resident of Chelsea and was the past secretary for the Order of the Eastern Stars Olive Lodge in Chelsea. She worked for the Chelsea High School Student Office as a secretary for nearly 20 years, and was an active member of the Covenant Church.

Mrs. Arnett enjoyed trips to Hawaii, volunteering at Chelsea Community Hospital, as well as watching her granddaughter, Kristyn Frey, play softball.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Brian (Gail) Arnett of Manchester and Jeanine (David) Frey of Saline; and a granddaughter, Kristyn Frey of Saline.

A funeral was held yesterday at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea. The Rev. Anthony Dickerson officiated. Burial was at Oak Grove cemetery in Chelsea.

Memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Church, Evangelical Home in Saline or the Parkinson's Foundation.

ELIZABETH E. MICHAELS

Unadilla Township

Elizabeth E. Michaels, 57, of Unadilla Township died April 21, 2005, at her home. She was born Nov. 8, 1948, in Detroit the daughter of Russel and Sarah (Bradford) DeMaggio.

Mrs. Michaels had lived in the area since 1993, working for CVS pharmacy as a drug technician. She enjoyed golfing, reading, computers and lake life.

On Jan. 26, 1990, she married Hurley G. Michaels, and he survives.

Also surviving are her parents of Florida; two sons, Brian Gantner of Birmingham and Sean (Christina) Gunn of Garden City; one brother, Frank (Margaret) DeMaggio of Sterling Heights; and one sister, Joan (Earl) Caderet of Florida.

Mrs. Michaels has 11 grandchildren and she adored them all.

Visitation was yesterday at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea.

Memorial contributions may be made to C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor.

JOHN "JACK" H. BERGMAN

Goldsboro, N.C.

Formerly of Chelsea

John "Jack" H. Bergman, 55, of Goldsboro, N.C., formerlyof Chelsea, died April 16, 2005, at Wayne Memorial Hospital inGoldsboro, N.C., following a short illness. He was born Oct. 4, 1949, inAnn Arbor the son of Howard and Alice (Quigley) Bergman.

Mr. Bergman graduated from Chelsea High School in 1967 and enjoyed school sports. Heenjoyed hunting and fishing in his early years, but golfing became his favorite pastime.

Mr. Bergman attended Jackson Community College before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving his country in Vietnam. He was discharged Jan. 9, 1973, as a sergeant.

Mr. Bergman was the vice president and chief information officer for North Carolina Community Federal Credit Union in Goldsboro.

He will be dearly missed by all his friends and family in Chelsea, as well as his co-workers, friends and extended family in Goldsboro.

Surviving are his mother of Chelsea; two children, Stasie Bredernitz and James (Katharina) Bergman, both of Ann Arbor; one brother, Steven (Kris) Bergman; three sisters, Janet (David) Buku of Chelsea, Beverly Holly of Chelsea and Debbie (Paul) Walter of Dexter; one niece; seven nephews; and 10 great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.

A funeral was held Tuesday at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea.

Memorial contributions may made to the Vietnam Veterans Fund.

LLOYD A. BOYCE

Chelsea

Formerly of Dexter

Lloyd A. Boyce, 90, died April 22, 2005, at the Chelsea Retirement Community. He was born Sept. 13, 1914, in Lyndon, Township the son of Wirt and Beulah (Marsh) Boyce.

Mr. Boyce was a lifelong farmer and member of the Dexter United Methodist Church. His community involvement included serving as a board member of Washtenaw County Soil Conservation, Dexter Cooperative Co., Lima Township Zoning Board of Appeals, Dexter Lions Club, Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 262 of Michigan and Washtenaw County Farm Bureau.

On May 20, 1944, he married Joyce V. Hashley, and she survives. Also surviving are their children, Lynn A. (Laura) Boyce of Orange, Calif., Sharleen E. (Richard) Dettling and Roger D. (Jane) Boyce, all of Dexter.

In addition, survivors include their grandchildren, Julie (Tony) Trinkle, Andrew (Karra) Dettling, Benjamin Boyce and Jacob Boyce, all of Dexter, Rebekah (Jacob) Murphree of Chelsea, and Aaron Boyce of California; two great-grandchildren, Alissa and Ryan Trinkle; brothers and sisters, Shirley (Arlo) Wasson of Holt, Wynn (Mary Louise) Boyce of Stockbridge, Max (Mary Lou) Boyce of Stockbridge and Hertha Boyce of Gregory; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters and their spouses, Elaine (Herman) Martin, and Katrene (Albert) Gall; one brother, A.J. Boyce; and a grandson, Justin Boyce.

A funeral was held Monday at the Dexter United Methodist Church. The Revs. Stephen Bringardner, Matt Hook and Beth Foster officiated. Burial was at Oak Grove cemetery in Chelsea.

Memorial contributions may be made to United Methodist Retirement Community Heritage Foundation, Dexter United Methodist Church or Arbor Hospice.

The family received friends at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea.

DONALD LUKE GUINAN

Royal Oak

Formerly of Chelsea

Donald Luke Guinan, 69, of Royal Oak, formerly of Chelsea, died April 20, 2005, at Beaumont Hospital. He was born Dec. 3, 1935, in Detroit.

Mr. Guinan graduated from Michigan State University with a master's degree in forestry and arboriculture. He worked for Davey Tree Co. and Henry Ford Hospital.

Mr. Guinan loved to fish and play golf. He was a member of St. Dennis Catholic Church in Royal Oak, as well as St. Mary Catholic Church in Chelsea.

Mr. Guinan married Judith A. Chapman Nov. 15, 1997, and she survives. He is also survived by his four children, Luke Guinan of Mount Morris, Joseph Guinan of California, Lorene Fredericks of Jackson and Bonnie (Brett) Holmes of North Carolina.

In addition, he is survived by his wife's three children, Angela Nick of Lake Orion, Julie Murphy of Goodrich and Bill Nick of Goodrich; two sisters, Loretta (Ed) Sutliff of Chelsea and Cathy (Dennis Wagenschutz) Guinan of Chelsea; one sister-in-law, Marcia Guinan of Maumee, Ohio; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, James; and his prior wife, Sharon.

A funeral Mass was held April 23 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Chelsea. The Rev. William Turner officiated. Burial was at Mount Olivet cemetery.

Visitation was Friday and included a vigil service in the evening.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Mary Catholic Church.

Funeral arrangements were by Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea.

VICTOR LOUIS BROWN

Chelsea

Victor Louis Brown, 90, of Chelsea died April 17, 2005, at Chelsea Retirement Community. He was born on May 1, 1914, in McHenry, N.D., the son of Price J. and Edna Grace (Culver) Brown.

Mr. Brown grew up in and around Grace City, N.D., moving to Michigan in 1936. He was a member of the United Methodist Church. He started out as a teacher in North Dakota, teaching all eight grades in a one-room schoolhouse.

Mr. Brown worked for General Motors Corp. in Flint, and he worked for the Boy Scouts of America as a Scout executive in Detroit.

On Aug. 14, 1937, he married Marjory E. Dean, and she preceded him in death April 6, 1986. He married Agnes Caudy April 25, 1987, and she survives.

Other survivors include a son, Kent (Pamela Byrnes) Brown of Chelsea; a daughter and Vicki L. (Daniel) Webster; seven grandchildren, Matthew Brown, Barbara Kister, Jeremy Kister, Peter Webster, Pamela Alexander, Jodie Brown and Kathlene Pecoraro; and six great-grandchildren, Alexander Kister, Kyle Webster, Christina Webster, Ryan Webster, Riley Alexander and Kalie Alexander.

He was preceded in death by a son, Bruce; a granddaughter, Melissa Webster; his brothers, Maynard, Millard, Roy, Harold and Kenneth; and his sisters, Ina Jensen and Daisy Flatters.

A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Chelsea Retirement Community Chapel. The Revs. James Hilliard and Beth Foster will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Chelsea Retirement Community, Boy Scouts of America or the American Diabetes Association.

MILES P. MERWIN

Chelsea

Formerly of Ann Arbor

Miles P. Merwin, 74, of Chelsea, formerly of Ann Arbor, died April 14, 2005, at the Chelsea Retirement Community. He was born April 26, 1930, in Detroit, the son of Jackson and Dorothy (King) Merwin.

Mr. Merwin moved to Chelsea in 1995, coming from Ann Arbor. He served in the U.S. Marines, and became a salesman for Detroit Edison and Dundee Cement.

Mr. Merwin was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Ann Arbor.

On Nov. 7, 1953, he married Shirley June Davis in Grosse Pointe, and she preceded him in death Jan. 1, 1995.

Survivors include three sons, Michael (Teresa) Merwin of Taylor, S.C., Scott (Carol) Merwin of Ann Arbor and Ronald (Therese) Merwin of Granger, Ind.; one daughter, Laura (James) Rapai of Chelsea; one sister, Jane Pilotte of Golden Valley, Minn.; six grandchildren, Miles B. Merwin, Jenielle Merwin, Blythe Yee, Lauren Merwin, Grace Rapai and Sarah Rapai; and one great-granddaughter, Kiely Lanier.

A memorial service was held Tuesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Ann Arbor. The Rev. Stephen Carl officiated. Burial was at Westminster Memorial Gardens.

Arrangements were by Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea.

PHYLLIS J. HAROOK

Chelsea

Phyllis J. Harook, 67, of Chelsea died April 14, 2005, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Superior Township after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born June 23, 1937, in Saline, the daughter of Charlie and Violet (Mericle) Fox.

Mrs. Harook was a successful Avon representative, reaching Presidents Club status each of her 30 years of service. She also was very active in the Ann Arbor Women's Bowling Association, served as league secretary for 30 years and competed in three leagues until January 2005.

On Sept. 5, 1964, she married John M. Harook in Port Huron, and he survives. Also surviving are three children, Cindy (Woody) Hoover of Munith, Jeff (Kellysue) Harook of Grass Lake and Tracie (John) Moniz of Canton; three sisters, Carol Bell of Dexter, Jean (Dan) Campbell of Saline and Mary Hudson of Chelsea; one daughter-in-law, Dagmar Harook of Jackson; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and her mother-in-law, Gene DeSmither of Roseville.

She was preceded in death by one son, Greg Harook; her parents; and one sister, Diane Utley.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea. The Rev. Robert Castle officiated.

Burial was at Oak Grove East cemetery in Chelsea.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Huron Valley Humane Society.

DOROTHY J. WALBROOK

Jackson

Formerly of Munith

Dorothy J. Walbrook, 77, of Jackson, formerly of Munith, died April 17, 2005. She was the daughter of the late Homer and Lela Parks.

Mrs. Walbrook was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne L., in December 2004, after 60 years of marriage. Also preceding her was one sister, Mildred Lantis; three brothers, Robert Parks, Donald Parks and Richard Parks.

She is survived by a son, Mark (Michelle) Walbrook of Waterford, and his children, Abigall, Kyle and Allison; a daughter, Kimberly (Danny) Berkshire of Michigan Center and her children, Julie, Amanda, Ethan, Tyler, Nathan and Nolan; a daughter, Tina (Bruce) Hellner of Mount Morris and her children, Ranay and Jarod; one goddaughter, Marnie Holbrook of Munith; four sisters, Gladys Murray, Catherine Brauer, Helen Lake and Mary Rettig; one brother, John Parks; and numerous nieces and nephews.

At her request, cremation has taken place. A service of remembrance will be held for both Dorothy and Wayne 2 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church of Waterloo, located at the corner of Parks Road and Territorial. Interment will follow at Munith cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Waterloo.

Arrangements were made by Charles J. Burden and Son Funeral Home in Jackson.

WAYNE L. WALBROOK

Jackson

Formerly of Munith

Wayne L. Walbrook, 76, died Dec. 17, 2004.

Following his wishes, cremation has taken place. A service of remembrance will be held 2 p.m. April 23 at the First United Methodist Church in Waterloo, corner of Parks Road and Territorial Road. The Rev. Wilbur Silvernail will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Waterloo.

Arrangements were by Charles J. Burden & Son Funeral Home in Jackson.
