LOIS J. MAITLAND

Chelsea

Lois Jeanette (Olney) Maitland, 89, of Chelsea, a resident of the Chelsea Retirement Community, died March 14, 2005, at Chelsea Community Hospital following complications from surgery.

Mrs. Maitland began life July 1, 1915, in Minneapolis one of five children born to Dorothy and Arthur Olney, a Methodist minister. She was brought up in the church and had committed her life to Christ by the age of eight. Faith formed the core of her family's life, as well as her own.

She enjoyed summer camp meetings and dreamed of going to Asbury College, a Methodist school in Kentucky.

As a young woman in the 1930s, she attended normal school, became a teacher and taught in several small schools in rural Minnesota over the next eight years. During World War II, she found it possible to realize her dream of attending Asbury, where she earned a bachelor's degree in religious education, followed by a master's in Christian education at nearby Asbury Seminary.

It also was at Asbury where she met and fell in love with another seminary student, Fred Maitland. They married in June 1947 and moved to Millington, where Fred became pastor of a Methodist church.

The couple's first child, John, was born in Michigan in 1949. Soon after, they were off to Nashville in preparation for taking a missionary assignment in Brazil. They arrived near the metropolis of Sao Paulo in 1950, but by 1953 had been reassigned to serve churches closer to Rio de Janiero. During this time, they added two more children to their family, James and Katherine.

While Fred carried out his duties as pastor, Lois trained Sunday school teachers at the churches on his circuit.

After 20 years of service to the people of Brazil, Lois and Fred returned to the United States, where Fred took a job as an associate pastor at First United Methodist Church of Ann Arbor, to be near his ailing mother. Lois went back to school at the University of Michigan, receiving a master's degree in education, and then took a job teaching in the Chelsea schools, where she retired in 1985 at the age of 70.

Mrs. Maitland was an avid genealogist, and carried on a wide correspondence with family and friends about her research. In the years just before her retirement, Lois and Fred bought the first house they ever owned, on Ann Arbor's west side, living there until 1992, when they moved to Chelsea.

The couple enjoyed an active retired life at Chelsea Retirement Community. Following her husband's death in 1999, Mrs. Maitland was able to keep busy with CRC committee work, attend the First United Methodist Church of Chelsea, and write stories about her experiences in Minnesota and Brazil. In her last years, she wrote many poems, mostly on religious themes.

Mrs. Maitland is survived by her three children, John (Roseane), Jim (Joyce) and Kathy (Barry McGhan); three grandchildren, Michael, Marcel and Jennifer; stepgrandchildren, Joanne, Falute and Seniu; three great-grandchildren, Jeremy, Jordan and Brendan; her sisters, Ruth (Harold) Greenlee, Edith (Paul) Voss and Eunice Moll, as well as several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. April 9 at the Chelsea Retirement Community Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Chelsea Retirement Community.

Arrangements were by Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea.
