Loretta Simmons

Loretta Lavley Simmons of St. Ignace Township enjoyed flower gardening, fishing, and spending time with her grandchildren. Mrs. Simmons died at the age of 79 Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at Mackinac Straits Long Term Care Facility in St. Ignace.

She was born in Hubbard Lake, December 21, 1925, to Albert and Loretta (nee Lavley) Grove.

A lifelong resident of St. Ignace Township, she married Orville Simmons January 2, 1945.

She is survived by two daughters and their families, Beverly Jean Simmons of St. Ignace and Lynda and Jim Wachter of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware; one son, Donald Simmons of St. Ignace; five grandchildren, Jamie Wachter, Lori Wachter, Tina Simmons, Donald Simmons, and Orville Simmons; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother and his family, John and Gladys Grove of St. Ignace, and one sister, Edith Emerick of Flint.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Orville in 1999; one brother, Albert Grove Jr.; two half brothers, Albert Gronlund and August Gronlund, and two half sisters, Vivien Jolly and Audrey Quick.

Services were Saturday, April 16, at Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford with the Reverend Wayne Foote officiating.

Burial was at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens in Bruce Township.

Donations in memory of Mrs. Simmons can be made to Mackinac Straits Hospital and Long Term Care Facility, 220 Burdette Street, St. Ignace 49781.

Margaret Goepfrich

Margaret Goepfrich of Carp Lake owned and managed the former Thrifty Foods of Boyne City (now Glen’s Market) with her husband for many years.

Mrs. Goepfrich died at the age of 91, Saturday, January 14, 2006, at Mackinac Straits Hospital and Long Term Care Facility of St. Ignace, where she had been a patient for a short time.

She was born in Charlevoix March 15, 1914, to William and Catherine Haggerty Smith. She was graduated from Charlevoix High School in 1932.

She married Fitch Tooley, and he preceded her in death February 11, 1969, in Boyne City.

She married Edmund Goepfrich in 1974, and they divided their time between Boyne City and Englewood, Florida. Mr. Goepfrich died April 13, 1986.

After his death, Mrs. Goepfrich made her home with her daughter and son-in-law in Mackinaw City and Carp Lake.

Mrs. Goepfrich was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Mackinaw City.

She is survived by her daughter and her family, Barbara and Jon Beck of Carp Lake; grandchildren Michael and Tracey Beck of Midland, Carrie and Tom Markham of Cheboygan, and Julie Beck of Big Rapids, and three great-grandchildren, Emily and Elizabeth Markham, and Ella Beck.

She was preceded in death by four siblings, John Smith, Monica Bingham, Catherine Mayne, and Mary Smith.

Visitation and prayer services were at St. Anthony’s Church of Mackinaw City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anthony’s Wednesday, January 18, at 11 a.m. Celebrant will be Father Paul Megee, assisted by Sister Chris Herald.

Burial will be in April, at Maple Lawn cemetery in Boyne City.

Memorial donations can be made to St. Anthony’s Parish Life Center in Mackinaw City. Donation envelopes are available at Dodson Funeral Home in St. Ignace.

Brian Winston

Brian Winston, 47, of Shelby Township, formerly of St. Ignace, died Saturday, January 14, 2006 in St. Joseph’s Mercy Medical Center in Clinton Township.

He was born June 20, 1958, to Nancy and Thomas Winston in Blue Island, Illinois.

Mr. Winston was employed as a mortgage broker for Sterling Capital Mortgage in Shelby Township.

He is survived by his wife, Denise, sons Tyler and Travis, his parents, his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Arlene and Richard Saunders of St. Ignace, and siblings and their families Mike and Gail Winston and Barbara Vance.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 18, at WujekCalcaterra & Sons on 54880 Van Dyke at 25 Mile in Shelby Township. Visitation was Tuesday, January 17.

Virginia Andreae

Virginia Pool Andreae of Bloomfield Hills was a longtime Les Cheneaux Islands cottager. She was involved in a number of community service organizations, and friends recall “her endless energy and generosity was shared with others less fortunate.”

Mrs. Andreae was 87 years of age when she died Wednesday, January 4, 2006, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Oakland in Pontiac.

She attended Miss Newman's School for Girls in Detroit, Penn Hall Preparatory School and Junior College in Pennsylvania, and the University of Michigan School of Music in Ann Arbor.

Mrs. Andreae was actively involved with many community service organizations, including serving on the boards of the Cranbrook Music Guild in Bloomfield Hills, Detroit Junior Symphony, The Village Club of Bloomfield Hills, and The Village Woman's Club of Bloomfield Hills, on which she served as community service chair.

She also was a member and past president of the University of Michigan Alumnae Club of Birmingham.

She contributed her time to the American Cancer Society, United Way, Oakland County Child and Adolescent Services, Community Living Center of Oakland County, and Children's Hospital Burn Unit of Detroit, and was a member of Orchard Lake Country Club and Detroit Athletic Club.

She played golf and tennis, and enjoyed traveling, particularly the many years she spent in the Les Cheneaux Islands.

Mrs. Andreae is survived by two sons and their families, Ken and Betti Pool and Barry and Susan Pool; her partner, Gordon Jeynes; her brother and his family, Charles “Chuck” and Jutta Letts of Bloomfield Hills and the Les Cheneaux Islands; four grandchildren, Cara Bozyk and her husband Paul, Tom Pool, Joshua Pool, and Christopher Pool, and two greatgrandchildren, Allison and Nicole Bozyk.

Services were at the Wm. R. Hamilton Funeral Home in Birmingham Thursday, January 12.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts be made to the Village Woman's Club Foundation, 190 East Long Lake Road, Bloomfield Hills MI 48304, the American Cancer Society, 18505 West Twelve Mile Road, Southfield MI 48076, Mercy Cranbrook Hospice Care, 281 Enterprise Court, Suite 300, Bloomfield Hills MI 48302, or to the charity of one’s choice.

Louis M. Millon

Retired General Motors executive Louis M. Millon of Bloomfield Hills was a seasonal resident of Cedarville, and a former Goetzville resident. He received the Kettering University Service Award in 1999.

Mr. Millon died at the age of 93, Wednesday, January 11, 2006, at Woodward Hills Nursing Home of Bloomfield Hills.

He was born July 21, 1912, in Goetzville, and finally settled in Bloomfield Hills, near Detroit. He maintained a seasonal home on Flower Bay Road in Cedarville, which he and his family visited regularly.

Mr. Millon worked for 45 years for General Motors, as an executive, manufacturing manager of the hardware division, and plant manager. His work included time at the General Motors Eastern Aircraft Division during World War II, where he was directly responsible for the manufacture and assembly of 7,546 torpedo bombers for the United States Navy for the war in the Pacific. He also worked as the resident plant manager at the Ternstedt Division Trenton Plant until his retirement in 1974. He was an active member of numerous boards in his plants’ cities throughout the years.

Mr. Millon was a 1933 graduate of the former General Motors Institute (now Kettering University) of Flint. He was a member of Kettering University President’s Council. Kettering University was founded as the School of Automotive Trades in 1919, became the Flint Institute of Technology in 1923, and in 1926, was adopted by the General Motors Corporation and renamed the General Motors Institute. By January 1, 1998, the school was named Kettering University to honor Charles F. Kettering, who was an industrial leader and instrumental in the founding and growth of General Motors. A scholarship to the University has been established in memory of Mr. Millon and his wife, Florence.

Mr. Millon is survived by his wife, Florence of Bloomfield Hills; a daughter, Dr. Linda Millon of Chicago; a sister-inlaw, Blanche Millon of Cedarville; a nephew and his family, Adrian and Sue Millon of Cedarville; a niece and her family, Carolyn and Dick Hank of Cedarville, and many other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Opal Millon; a son, John Millon; a daughter, Christine Millon, and seven brothers and sisters, Michael Millon, Andrew Millon, Mary Mattis, Nell Lieving, William Millon, Anthony “Tony” Millon, and Theodore Millon.

Services were in Royal Oak, and a funeral mass was celebrated Saturday, January 14, at Holy Name Church in Birmingham.

He was buried at Holy Sepulchre cemetery in Southfield.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial tributes be made to Kettering University, Gift Accountant, Louis and Florence Millon Endowed Scholarship, 1700 West Third Avenue, Flint MI 48504.

Arrangements were made by A.J. Desmond and Sons Funeral Home of Royal Oak.

Clarence ‘Shorty’ Beacom

Clarence Eldon “Shorty” Beacom of Pickford was a farmer, who also worked many years for Gerald Harrison Plumbing, and also a few years for Beacom Enterprises. Mr. Beacom served in World War II, in Guam, as a “SeaBee,” the nickname given to soldiers who worked in the Naval Construction Battalions (CBs) that built bases, roads, and airstrips.

Mr. Beacom was 86 when he died Thursday, January 12, 2006, at War Memorial Hospital Long Term Care in Sault Ste. Marie.

A lifelong Pickford area resident, he was born November 26, 1919, in Blairville, to Oliver Turner and Lillie Jane (nee Hillock) Beacom.

He married his wife, Phyllis, March 10, 1945. Family members said they loved working their farm in Pickford.

Mr. Beacom is survived by two daughters, Barbara Beacom and Joyce Cook, both of Huntington, Indiana; one son and his family, Francis and Jodi Beacom of Menominee; 12 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren; three sisters and their families, Margaret Cottle and Marie Smith of Pickford, and Vera and Lyle Jenks of Sault Ste. Marie; a brother, Jim and Alberta Beacom of Florida, and his special friends and neighbors, Dr. Clinton and Barbara Groover of Pickford.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis, March 2, 2005, his parents, Oliver and Lillie, and by his brother, Leslie Beacom.

A private family visitation was held.

Services and burial will be at Cottle cemetery in the spring. Mr. Beacom’s grandson, Jeremy Cook, will officiate.

Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford is assisting the family.

Harry Rye

Harry Lawrence Rye of Hessel grew up in Pickford and then served in the United States Army. He worked for General Motors at the Fisher Body factory in Flint for more than 30 years. While working at Fisher, he rode the Indianapolis 500 Pace Car through the Sault Ste. Marie bicentennial parade.

Mr. Rye died at the age of 72 Sunday, January 8, 2006, at his home.

He was born November 26, 1933, in Pickford to Lloyd Richard and Fanny Mildred Hill Rye.

After he retired from General Motors, he returned to the Pickford and Hessel areas to make his home and enjoy his property on Rockview Hill, south of Pickford. For a few summers, he worked at Thick ‘n Thin Lumber in Cedarville.

Mr. Rye was a life member of AmVets. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and spending time in the woods watching the animals. He also collected cast steel cars.

Mr. Rye is survived by one sister and her family, Shirley and Marvin McDowell of Pickford; two brothers and their families, Richard Rye of Hessel and James and Karen Rye of Pickford; nieces and nephews and their families, Carol and Tim Storey, Bill and Dorothy McDowell, Charles McDowell, Myrna and Fred Laundy, Rick Rye, Ron and Colleen Rye, Tim and Diann Rye, David and Tammie Rye, Susan and John Ackley, Dan and Tracy Rye, and Kaye and Rob Batho, and many grand-nieces and grandnephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services were Thursday, January 12, at Reamer Galer Funeral Home with the Reverend Ron Bown officiating.

Spring burial will be at Cottle cemetery in Marquette Township, Pickford.

Memorial donations may be made to Alcoholics Anonymous District 16, 20901 South Homestead Drive, Pickford MI 49774.

Henry Hammermeister

Henry Hammermeister of Engadine was a dairy farmer and Mackinac County politician who helped establish the Historical Society and Museum in Engadine and the West Mackinac Medical and Dental Clinics. Mr. Hammermeister died January 2, 2006, after being ill with cancer for two years.

He was born in Engadine December 16, 1920.

Mr. Hammermeister served four years in the U.S. Army Air Force Command as a chief flight mechanic. He worked on propelled DC54 transport planes in the 2nd Air Force and trained pilots to operate 37-caliber guns on the planes.

Known as “Hank” to his family, Mr. Hammermeister enjoyed playing baseball and became a catcher for the 1938 Rappinville baseball team.

While in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he met Gladys Swiatkiewicz of East Hartford, Connecticut, at a USO dance. They were married November 22, 1943, and remained together until her death in 1976.

Mr. Hammermeister spent five years working for Chrysler Corporation in Detroit, then farmed from the early 1950s until his retirement in 1986.

He married Thomasina Walmsley of Newberry in 1980. She preceded him in death in 1993.

Mr. Hammermeister always said politics “ran in his blood,” family members recalled. He served for 14 years as the Garfield Township Clerk and 12 years as Garfield Township Supervisor. He served for 20 years on the Mackinac County Housing Commission, was vice chairman of the Township Association’s Mackinac County Chapter, and was president of the board of directors in the development of the West Mackinac Medical and Dental Clinics in Engadine, beginning in 1987. Friends said he was proud of his role in the establishment of the museum in Engadine, and worked diligently for the Historical Society. In 2004, the Historical Society Board honored him with an award for his efforts and enthusiasm in creating the Historical Society and museum.

In 1993, Mr. Hammermeister was in charge of the Garfield Township Youth Group, supported work for the Youth Chairman of Credentials Committee, and was vice chairman of the Education Committee for Township Affairs. He was asked to represent the Eastern Upper Peninsula in 1993, working on water control and water quality recycling, while serving the Michigan Township’s Association’s board of directors as a representative for Alger, Chippewa, Luce, Mackinac, and Schoolcraft counties.

Mr. Hammermeister belonged to the Newberry Post of the American Legion for 35 years and was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, serving on the church council and on the Board of Elders.

One of his goals following retirement was to read as much about historical issues as he could. He remained a great storyteller, friends recalled.

He is survived by two daughters and their families, Judy and Bob Steele of East Lansing, with their daughters, Britten and A.J., both of Fort Myers, Florida, Cheryl and Michael Sconce of Fort Worth, Texas, with their son, Braedon; two sisters, Eleanor Richter of Nashville, Tennessee, and Engeline Rosenthal of East Lansing, and many cousins and friends.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, January 28, at 11 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Engadine, with Pastor Arthur Bode officiating. Luncheon will be served following the service.

Memorials may be directed to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church building fund at W14012 McKelvey Road, Engadine, Michigan 49827.
