John R. Stevens

IRON MOUNTAIN - John Robert Stevens, 87, of Iron Mountain, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2007, at ManorCare Health Services.

He was born on June 30, 1920, in Dollar Bay, the son of the late William O. and Anna Marie (Hardy) Stevens.

John served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater. He was a member of the Norway Veterans of Foreign Post (VFW) 4581. John worked in construction as an operating engineer in Detroit.

He married Virginia Elzea on March 9, 1946, in Detroit. The couple moved to Iron Mountain in 1986.

John is survived by his wife, Virginia; two sons, Terrell John (Roxann) Stevens of Benzonia, Mich., and Mark Allen Stevens of Iron Mountain; one brother, Kenneth Stevens of Dollar Bay; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by four sisters, Edith Pintar, Lucille Hewitt, Margaret Washburn, and Frances Maxwell and one brother, William Stevens Jr.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Tondin-Ross and Freeman Funeral Home and Friday from 12 noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.

Burial will be in cemetery Park.

Military graveside rites will be accorded by the Norway VFW Post 4581.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the John R. Stevens Memorial Fund.

The Tondin-Ross and Freeman Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Ronald S. Bates

IRON MOUNTAIN - Ronald S. Bates, 21, of 900 East I St., Iron Mountain, died unexpectedly on Sunday morning, Sept. 16, 2007.

Ron was born April 4, 1986, in the state of Washington. He migrated to Michigan in 2003 and has resided here since then. Ron's favorite pastime was fishing, which he found bountiful here in the Upper Peninsula. He enjoyed many hours at this pleasure. Listening to music and watching a good movie were his secondary hobbies. Ron was a kind hearted man with good manners. He loved animals, especially Flip his buddy black lab. He was most recently employed at Aurora Castings.

Ron is survived by his father, Jerry Bates and his mother, Sherry Lakey; two brothers, J.T. (Angelique) Bates and Jake Whitney; one sister, Jennifer; his fiance' and expecting mother of their baby, Valerie Edwards; close friends, Carl Wille, Kyle Annear, A.J. Goad, Trey Blair, Justin Pultz and many other friends.

Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday at the Maranatha Assembly of God Church in Kingsford.

Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. on Friday at the church. Rev. David Wilton will officiate.

The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home with the funeral arrangements.

May Violet "Vi" Hughes

IRON MOUNTAIN - May Violet (Vi) Hughes, 94, of Maryhill Manor, formerly of 1021 West A St. in Iron Mountain, went with the Lord on Friday, Sept. 14, 2007, at Dickinson County Hospital.

Vi was born in Porterfield, Wis. on May 4, 1913, the daughter of the late Carl and Beatrice (Reno) Meyer. Vi was always a hard worker, doing jobs such as operating a crane in the bomber plant at Willow Run during World War II. In 1945, she worked as a seamstress for Security Sports Wear on the northside of Iron Mountain, and later worked as a bar keeper at the Dickinson Inn.

Vi married the late Herbert Hughes on Sept. 16, 1950, in Ypsilanti, Mich. They together owned and operated the Taxi Bar in Spread Eagle and the Buddy Bar in Iron Mountain. Vi was an avid bowler and through the Taxi Bar and Buddy Bar, sponsored several teams throughout the years.

There are several things that we will look back on and know that her heart and soul went into it. She always had wonderful gatherings in which family and friends could enjoy her cooking. There were many years that she would spend days preparing her delicious Christmas cookies for everyone. She also would make clothes for her grandchildren, she babysat for friends and family, and cared for the mentally challenged. She also volunteered for many years at Maryhill Manor while her husband was a resident.

Vi enjoyed life and she lived every minute to the fullest. There wasn't an occasion that went by that she wasn't dancing or singing. She truly loved her family and was always there for anyone who needed her.

Vi is survived by her three children from her marriage to Alex Beaulier, a daughter, Daune (George) Goettler of Kingsford, and two sons, Howard (Muriel) Beaulier, and Dale (Ruth) Beaulier, also of Kingsford; stepchildren, Richard (Lois) Hughes, of Sun Lakes, Ariz., Helen (Chuck) Sleight, of Sun City, Ariz., Dale (Shirley) Hughes of Quinnesec, Lois (Leonard) Gendron of Quinnesec, and Ronald (Cathy) Hughes of Granbury, Texas; a sister-in-law, Ruby Meyer of Rockford, Ill.; grandchildren, George (Alice) Goettler of Kingsford, Terry (Margaret) Goettler of Lake Stevens, Wash., Kathleen Campos of Kingsford, Teresa Goettler of Green Bay, Wis., Sandy (Peter) Kennedy of Breitung Township, Susan (Dennis) VanMarter of Breitung Township, Scott (Cheryl) Beaulier of Kingsford, Sherry (Gene) Kallenbach of Albuquerque, N.M., Shannon McKindles of Spread Eagle, Wis., Sonya Beaulier of Marquette, Teena (Allen) Broullire of Kingsford, Tim (Susan) Beaulier of Kingsford, and Teresa (Tom) Schettler of Iron Mountain. She is also survived by 31 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren. She is survived by many step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren as well and many special nieces and nephews.

Vi was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Hughes; her sisters, Berneice Abeldt and Arlene Gioacchini; and her brothers, Walter and Leonard Meyer.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Queen of Peace church in Kingsford.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the church. Fr. Michael Woempner will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Burial will be in cemetery Park.

Pallbearers will be Tim Beaulier, Allen Broullire, Jourdan Broullire, George Goettler, Dennis VanMarter, and Chad VanMarter

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in her memory.

The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home with the funeral arrangements.

Linda Marie Wiese

IRON MOUNTAIN - Linda Marie Wiese, 60, of White Birch Village, died Weds. Sept. 12, 2007 at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital. She was born in Evanston, IL on June 27, 1947.

She worked at C.J. Graphics and was a volunteer at Woodland Elementary School.

She leaves her husband Lance Wiese, her children Eric Wiese and Lisa Wiese, her father Harold Kegler, and her sister Judith (Roger) Thompson.

Linda was preceded in death by her mother Isabella Kegler.

Visitation will be Sat. from 1-2pm at First Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be at 2pm at the church. Rev. James Chinery will officiate.

Burial will be in Quinnesec cemetery.

The Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Orlando Eutizi

IRON MOUNTAIN - Orlando Eutizi, 91, of Iron Mountain, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2007, at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Iron Mountain.

He was born on July 12, 1916, in Iron Mountain, the son of the late Nicola and Maria (Bastianelli) Eutizi.

Orlando served in the 457th Battalion in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a D-Day survivor and served in the European Theater. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for many years, retiring in 1977.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Veteran's of Foreign Wars, the Moose Lodge, and National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Orlando is survived by many nieces and nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Julius and Columbo Eutizi and his sisters, Clementine Rivet, Marcella Stromei, Perina Brockington, Josephine Bastianelli, Theresa Eutizi, and Linda Formolo.

Visitation will be held on Saturday from 11 a.m. to12:30 p.m. at Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at 1 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Fr. Ray Zeugner will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial.

Burial will be in cemetery Park.

Memorials can be made to the Dickinson County Cancer Unit at 1401 S. Carpenter Ave. Iron Mountain, MI 49801

Mary Eileen Verrette

IRON MOUNTAIN - Mary Eileen Verrette, 86, of Iron Mountain, died unexpectedly on Friday, Sept. 7, 2007, at Freeman's Nursing and Rehabilitation Community.

She was born on May 25, 1921, in Soperton, Wis., the daughter of the late Wilbur and Eleanor (Fontaine) Kennedy.

Mary graduated from Kingsford High School in 1939. She worked in the catalog department at J.C. Penney for 30 years until her retirement.

Mary enjoyed being with all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Mary loved crocheting blankets for her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid Packer and Nascar fan and she thoroughly enjoyed her bridge club.

Mary was a member of St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Elks Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Daughters of Isabella, the Iron Mountain-Kingsford GFWC and the Dickinson County Pilots Association.

She married Edward A. Verrette on May 14, 1945, in Iron Mountain. He preceded her in death on March 10, 1975.

Mary was a very loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be sadly missed by all who loved her and her smile. Her laughter that would light up a room will also be missed.

Mary is survived by her children, Joanne (Bill) Backhaus of Genesee Depot, Wis., Patrick (Deena) Verrette of Iron Mountain, Don Verrette of Palatine, Ill., Mary (Doug Jr.) Sleik of Wallace, and Terese (Tom) Jahnke of Johnsburg, Ill.; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren with two more expected this year; a daughter-in-law, Trudy Verrette of Kingsford; her loving sister, Eleanor Weitkunat of Greendale, Wis.; her brother-in-law, James (Barb) Verrette of Iron Mountain; her sister-in-law, Delores Cowell of Kingsford; and many nieces, nephews, and caring friends.

She was preceded in death by her son, Michael E. Verrette; her daughter-in-law, Paula I. Verrette; her twin sister, Eleanor, who died at birth; and her brother, Robert J. Kennedy.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home. Parish prayers will be held on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Visitation will also be held on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the church. Fr. Paul Nomellini will celebrate the Mass.

Burial will be in cemetery Park.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons Brian Verrette, Michael Backhaus, Doug Sleik III, James Backhaus, Kevin Brown, and Jason Holman.

The family would like to thank the staff at Freeman's Nursing and Rehabilitation Community, Loving Caring Hands, Dickinson County Memorial Hospital, Dickinson County Home Health and Dr. Funtanilla, Dr. Haastrup, Dr. Baker, and Dr. Fornetti. They would also like to thank the rehabilitation staff and the aides at ManorCare Health Services.

The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.

Marian L. Olson

KINGSFORD - Marian Lorraine Olson, 79, of 213 E. Breen Ave., Kingsford, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Sept. 7, 2007.

She was born Oct. 14, 1927, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Leo and Cecilia (Micheau) Despins. She was a lifelong resident of the area and graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1945.

She married Floyd Olson on Feb. 7, 1948, in Iron Mountain.

Marian worked at the Dickinson-Iron Health Department for many years, retiring in 1988. She was an active member of American Martyrs Church. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Marian leaves her husband, Floyd, of 59 years; two sons, Ronald (Rita) and Dennis (Sally) of Kingsford; three grandchildren, Hope (Scott) Atwater of Appleton, Wis., Jeff (Jenny) Olson of Appleton and Brian (Kristi) Olson of Norway; one sister, Carol Ryan (Howard Skogman) of Beaver Dam, Wis.; two brothers, Leo "Joe" (Luella) Despins of Iron Mountain and Thomas (Lona) Despins of Superior, Wis.; three great-grandchildren, Emma Leigh and Erica Atwater, and Isaac Olson; and many special nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, James, Robert, and Kenneth Despins.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.

Parish prayers will be recited at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Joseph Gouin will officiate.

Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.

Her grandchildren and their spouses will serve as pallbearers.

The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the arrangements.

Delores Mae Scott

KINGSFORD - Delores Mae Scott, 80, of Kingsford, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007, at Maryhill Manor in Niagara.

She was born on Jan. 12, 1927, in Antigo, Wis., the daughter of the late Elmer and Edna (Swenson) Romeis.

Delores attended Kingsford High School. She worked at General Controls and as a dietician at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital, retiring after 13 years.

Delores married Clayton Scott in Iron Mountain on Aug. 14, 1948. He preceded her in death on Feb. 21, 1987. Delores was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. She enjoyed playing bingo, fishing, camping, helping others and attending birthday club.

She is survived by two sons, Jeff (Rosemarie) Scott and Don Scott, both of Kingsford; one brother, Kenneth Romeis of Orange, Texas; one sister, Marylin Ebidon of Aurora, Wis.; three grandchildren, Jeff Jr., Ryan, and Jaime Scott and several nieces and nephews.

Delores was preceded in death by one grandson, Jason Scott, two sisters, Betty Romeis and Shirley (George) Bosl; one brother, Donald Romeis; her mother and father-in-law, Mary and Walter Scott and one brother-in-law, Gordon (Dorothy) Scott.

Visitation will be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Kingsford Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon at the funeral home. Rev. Chad Ott will officiate. Burial will be in Dickinson County Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in her memory.

The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Kingsford Funeral Home with the funeral arrangements.

Mario J. Badini

IRON MOUNTAIN - Mario J. Badini, 92, of 409 S. Forest St. in Iron Mountain, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007, at the VA Medical Center.

He was born May 10, 1915, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Ferdinand and Margaret (Pioni) Badini. Mario was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Army.

He married Mary Hart on Sept. 1, 1956, at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain. Mario worked as a butcher for M. Cohodes Sons for more than 40 years, retiring in 1980. He loved his garden and the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, and going to his camp. He was a member of St. Mary and St. Joseph Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He faithfully volunteered at the VA hospital for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; Arthur Hart, Thomas and Thelma Nowak, Dorothy Nowak, and Elizabeth Hart, all of Iron Mountain; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by six brothers, Tony, John, Frank, Joseph, Arthur, and Chester Badini; and three sisters, Jenny Minutello, Madeline Cavicchioni, and Mary Furno.

Visitation will be on Friday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be Friday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary and St. Joseph Church. Fr. Daniel Zaloga will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Burial will be in cemetery Park.

The American Legion and the VFW will conduct military graveside services.

Pallbearers will be Jeffery, Anthony, James, and David Hart, Ron Nelson, and Robert Badini.

The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home with arrangements.
