George Bruyn

George T. Bruyn of Lakefield Township was a veteran of the United States Army and worked as a truck driver for 30 years. Mr. Bruyn was 78 when he died Thursday, January 12, 2006, at Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital in Manistique.

He had been a resident of the hospital’s long term care facility for the past eight years.

He was born June 6, 1927, in Lakefield Township to Leon and Sylvia (nee Layn) Bruyn.

Mr. Bruyn served in the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge May 7, 1953. He was employed as a truck driver at several companies for 30 years. He was a member of VFW Post 6030 in Germfask and enjoyed being outdoors and gardening.

He is survived by his sister, Margaret Wallace of McMillan, and several nephews and a niece.

Mr. Bruyn was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Joseph Bruyn, and a sister, Josephine Wilmers.

Graveside services are planned in the spring at Forest Home cemetery in Newberry.

Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry assisted the family with arrangements.

Helen Loveless

Helen Dowd Loveless of Kincheloe was a licensed registered nurse who started her career at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie. She was a nurse at Kincheloe Air Force Base, Rudyard Area Schools, and Newberry State Hospital and retired in 1989. With a life-long interest in learning, she attended seminars and classes up until the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

Mrs. Loveless passed away Monday September 19, 2005, at Mackinac Straits Long Term Care Facility in St. Ignace.

She was born November 9, 1924, in Fibre to Fred and Gertrude (nee Dalman) Dowd. She grew up and went to primary school in Fibre and was graduated from Rudyard High School and St. Mary's School of Nursing in Detroit.

She married Clayton D. Loveless April 24, 1948, and, in addition to raising her own family, she was a foster parent.

Mrs. Loveless was devout and an active member in the Fundamental Baptist Church of Kincheloe.

She enjoyed reading, knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, canning, crafts, and crossword puzzles, which she completed in ink. She was known for a wonderful singing voice and her favorite music was old hymns.

Mrs. Loveless is survived by two daughters and their families, Ciss and Michael Beatty of Cheboygan, Anne and Steve Wells of Orlando, Florida; one son and his family, Len and Jane Loveless of Clarkston; five grandchildren, Jeff, Tim, and Michael Loveless, and Melanie and Moriah Beatty; one brother and his family, Bud and Darlene Dowd of Sunnydale, California, and four sisters and their families, Molly Langendam, Joyce Chadwick, and Doris McDowell, all of Rudyard, and Beth and Herb Spring of Plymouth.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Clayton D. Loveless in 1993, and one sister, Laura Malaska Salo.

Visitation will be Wednesday, September 21, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford.

Services will be Thursday, September 22, at 11 a.m., also at the funeral home. Pastor Tim Rader will officiate.

Burial will be next to her husband at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens cemetery in Bruce Township.

The family requests that remembrance donations be made to Mackinac Straits Long Term Care Facility, 220 Burdette Street, St. Ignace Michigan 49781.

Ronald Powers

Ronald Powers, 77, of St. Ignace, was the Chief of Police in St. Ignace for 13 years, a deputy for the Mackinac County Sheriff’s Department, and a custodian at Gros Cap School for 23 years. In recent years, he and his wife, Barbara, have been park managers for Hiawatha Federal Forest Campgrounds in Mackinac County.

Mr. Powers died Saturday evening, September 17, following a lingering illness.

He was born May 21, 1928, in Hawks to Evart and Mildred (nee Caldwell) Powers and was graduated from LaSalle High School and attended Northern Michigan University. He was a longtime member of the Moose Lodge #999 and St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church.

Mr. Powers was a veteran of the Korean War and he loved to fish and to hunt deer.

At Gros Cap School, he was well known to children as “the tooth man,” helping kids lose their baby teeth, with the permission of their parents, of course, and was loved by all the children.

He married Barbara St. Louis in St. Ignace September 3, 1949, and the couple reared nine children.

Surviving, in addition to Barbara, are five sons and their families, Randy Powers of Mackinaw City, Rick and Laura Powers of Janesville, Wisconsin, Ron and Shannon Powers of Escanaba, Rodney Powers of Garnet, and Robert and Dorothy Powers of Cheboygan; four daughters and their families, Ronna and Tom Farley of Salem, New Hampshire, Reinette and Jerry Murray of Novi, Roxanne Tallman of Allenville, Renee and Pat Harrington of Cheboygan; two brothers and their families, Neil and Carol Powers of California and Wid and Sharon Powers of Alpena; two sisters and their families, Phyllis and Joel Brown of Sulfer, Oklahoma, and Marilou and Joseph Sayles of East Lansing; 18 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Barbara Beaudoin and Ardis Pearson, a brother, Clinton Powers, and a grandson, Brett, age 4, of Escanaba.

Friends called at Dodson Funeral Home in St. Ignace Tuesday, September 20, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. A Moose memorial service was held at 7 p.m., with prayers following at 8 p.m. led by Pastor Wayne Foote.

Services will be at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church Wednesday, September 21, at 10 a.m., with Deacon Donald Olmstead officiating. A lunch will be served at the Moose Lodge on Mackinac Trail following the graveside service.

Burial will be in Gros Cap cemetery.

John ‘Jack’ Lee

John T. “Jack” Lee, 77, of St. Ignace, died Wednesday evening, September 14, 2005, at his home after an illness with cancer.

He was born in Moran Township May 12, 1928, to Charles and Nellie (nee Laverty) Lee. He was one of nine children in the Lee family.

Mr. Lee was a very hard worker, friends said, and worked for The Republican News for more than 18 years. He worked in maintenance at Mackinac Straits Hospital for 10 years, worked for Union 76 for several years, and worked for the past several summers for the U.S. Forest Service as a seasonal carpenter and maintenance man. He drove a taxi at one time, and also worked for Community Action, on the state highways, and at Straits State Park.

He married Opal Pomeroy at the United Methodist Church in St. Ignace November 14, 1953. She survives, along with two sons and their families, Charles and Susan Lee of Sault Ste. Marie and John W. and Debora Lee of Kincheloe; three daughters and their families, Alana and Roy Gugin of St. Ignace, Deborah and Joseph Suggitt of Kincheloe, Jacqueline and John Zornick of Sandpoint, Idaho; one brother, Jerome Lee, and a sister, June Douville, both of St. Ignace. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and two great- granddaughters.

Mr. Lee was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Henry, Calvin, Duane, Charles, Helen LaVake, and Iva Grant, along with a infant daughter, who died December 12, 1951.

Services were Monday, September 19, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in St. Ignace, with the Reverend Jim Balfour officiating. Visitation was Sunday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Dodson Funeral Home, which assisted the family with arrangements. Burial was in Gros Cap cemetery beside his daughter.

Alvin ‘Red’ McNeil

Alvin H. "Red" McNeil of Clovis, California, was a talented piano player with a passion for music, and friends said he could make a piano talk. Mr. McNeil passed away September 4, 2005, after being ill with cancer.

He was born in Gould City to James E. and Leola B (nee Yale) McNeil, was graduated from Engadine Consolidated Schools, and joined the U.S. Navy in 1961.

Mr. McNeil worked for the Coca-Cola Company in San Jose, California, for 25 years and enjoyed fishing and the outdoors.

He and his first wife, Betty Ondich, had three sons, Alvin Jr., John, and Brian. Mr. McNeil later married Barbara Gerber and helped rear three stepsons, Grant, Bradley, and Todd.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of Clovis, California; three sons, Alvin H. McNeil of Yerington, Nevada, and John J. and Brian K. McNeil, both of Gould City; two granddaughters, Heather and Sabrina; two sisters and their families, Darlaine Hines of Gould City and Beverly and Bob King of Naubinway; a brother and his family, Ronald and Nina O'Neil of Gould City; a sister-in-law and her family, LuAnn and Bill Scheerer of Newberry; two uncles and their families; Donald and Marilyn McNeil and Hughie and Rachel McNeil of Gould City, and two aunts and their families, Mary Louise and Jerry Swiercz of Engadine and Evelyn DeMars of Westland.

Mr. McNeil was preceded in death by his father, James E. McNeil, his mother, Leola O'Neil, a brother, James E. McNeil Jr., a stepfather, Albert N. "Chick" O’Neil, a half-brother, Timothy L. O'Neil, a brother-in-law, James Hines, and grandparents Harry and Emma McNeil.

A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 17, at the Newton Township Hall in Gould City with interment at the Newton Township cemetery.

Beatrice ‘Bea’ Stauch

Beatrice M. “Bea” Stauch, 84, of Germfask, died at her home Monday, September 12, 2005, with her husband, Lewis J. Stauch, by her side.

She was born April 5, 1921, in Detroit and lived most of her adult life in Ann Arbor. She moved to Germfask in 1985 following her husband’s retirement from City of Ann Arbor.

She is survived by her children and their families, Margarett Ann and Grant Hatchard, Frederick J. and Cindy Stauch, Kathy Laverne Stauch and Gary, her stepchildren and their families, Jackie Stickney and Bonnie and Len Winkelman, four grandchildren and their families, Clayton and Emily Hatchard, Frank and Andrea Hatchard, Connie Hohl, and Jarrett Stauch, and three great-grandchildren, Jaeger Hatchard, Elijah Hatchard, and Ian Hatchard.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Beatrice (nee Butcher) Bross and George Bross, and one brother, Frederick Bross.

Memorial services will be Saturday, October 1, at Muehligs Funeral Home in Ann Arbor. Friends in the Germfask and Curtis area who wish to pay their respects are asked to contact Lewis Stauch at (906) 586-3232 or at his residence at 619 Ackley Road in Germfask.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at P.O. Box 50, Memphis Tennessee 38101.

Marie Hammer

Marie A. Hammer was best known as a great cook who worked many years at Sophie's Tavern and then at R.J. Wallis Elementary School at Kincheloe Air Force Base. When she wasn't at work cooking, Mrs. Hammer loved to be in the kitchen at home. She was always cooking, baking, or canning, family members recall, and she excelled at pie crust and biscuits.

She was 92 when she died Wednesday, September 14, 2005, at War Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Facility in Sault Ste. Marie.

She was born March 10, 1913, in Cheboygan to David and Lillian (nee DeRoshia) Bourrie.

Mrs. Hammer grew up in Cheboygan, where, as a teenager, she worked in a garment factory and at the Cheboygan Theater to help her parents support her nine siblings.

In 1935, she moved to the Sault Ste. Marie area with her first husband, George Lyons. She was known as an immaculate housekeeper. She also enjoyed playing cribbage and was active in the American Legion Auxiliary for many years.

Mrs. Hammer is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Jo-Ann Hanchera of Kincheloe; one son and his family, David Lewis and Joy Lyons of Princeton, West Virginia; four grandchildren and their families, D.J. and Edward Malloy, Dale and Pam Hanchera, Darby and Joanie Hanchera, and John Hanchera; five great-grandchildren, Sam Malloy, John Ryan Hanchera, Shelby Hanchera, Kassie Hanchera, and Sierra Hanchera, and two sisters and their families, Margaret and Walter LaCross of Cheboygan and Theresa Ann Lockey of Saginaw.

She was preceded in death by her first and second husbands, George Lyons and Gene Hammer; four sisters, Edwardine Mathis, Gertrude Maxwell, Frances Socha, and Elaine Bourrie; and three brothers, Raymond, Thomas and James Bourrie.

Services will be private. Memorial donations can be made to War Memorial Hospital Long Term Care, 500 Osborn Blvd., Sault Ste. Marie 49783

Ron Bloch

Ronald Bloch, 72, of St. Ignace, died Saturday, September 17, 2005, at Marquette General Hospital.

Arrangements are incomplete at press time, but a graveside service is tentatively planned for October 8 at Maplewood cemetery in Rexton, said Bruce Dodson of Dodson Funeral Home in St. Ignace.

Patricia Burke

Patricia E. Burke, 49, of Newberry, died Friday, April 15, 2005, of cancer at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital, with her family by her side.

William St. Louis

William L. St. Louis, 72, of Sturgis, died Sunday afternoon, April 17, 2005, at Sturgis Hospital Emergency Room.

He was born November 29, 1932, on Mackinac Island to Frances Lloyd and Nellie (nee Davenport) St. Louis.

Mr. St. Louis moved to Sturgis from Detroit in 1960, just after he married Marie Grawey of Highland Park December 5, 1959.

Mr. St. Louis retired from the State of Michigan Liquor Control Commission in 1995, after 35 years of service. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict, earning the rank of sergeant.

He was a member of the Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sturgis, Captain John J. Kelley Post #1335 VFW, and Newman-Wenzel Post #73 American Legion. Mr. St. Louis had many interests and hobbies that included boating, fishing, playing golf, traveling, and word search puzzles. He was also a sports fan and always enjoyed following Detroit sports teams. He was proud of his Native American heritage and enjoyed researching his heritage.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marie; two daughters and their families, Arlene St. Louis and Wanda and Alan Barker, both of Sturgis; two sons and their families, Stephen St. Louis and his fiancee, Rhonda O’Toole, of White Pigeon, and Michael and Kathryn St. Louis of Sturgis; 10 grandchildren, Michelle, Glenn, William, Mathew, Elizabeth, Jacob, Nicole, Jason, Courtney, and Austin; 13 great grandchildren; and one brother, Robert St. Louis of Virginia.

His parents and his brother, John St. Louis, preceded him in death.

A memorial mass celebrating the life of William St. Louis will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 21, at the Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sturgis. Father Richard Fritz will officiate.

Burial of ashes will follow the mass at Oak Lawn cemetery in Sturgis, where Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW will confer full military rites.

Memorial donations may be directed to the American Diabetes Association. Envelopes are available at the Hackman-Foglesong Funeral Home in Sturgis.

Martin 'Jim' Tarnutzer

Martin "Jim" Junior Tarnutzer of St. Ignace passed away peacefully with family nearby at Northern Michigan Hospital of Petoskey Tuesday, April 18, 2006. He was 81.

He was born January 8, 1925 in Sparta, Wisconsin, to Martin Christian and Hazel Sophia (nee Madison) Tarnutzer.

Mr. Tarnutzer sailed the Great Lakes as a young man and later worked for 34 years at Edison Sault Electric Company.

He is survived by six children and their families, Joan M. McClelland of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Charles and Charlene Tarnutzer of Thornton, Colorado, Thomas and Diane Tarnutzer of St. Ignace, Janice and Michael Moore of Negaunee, Helen Tarnutzer of Phoenix, Arizona, and Hazel and Robert Shilts of Stephenson; 11 grandchildren and their families, Roberta Cardiff of Toronto, Canada, Raymond and Marnie Tarnutzer of Escanaba, Mindy and Alex Rivers of Sault Ste. Marie, Traci and Jake Goodnight of St. Ignace, James McClellend of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Carle Tarnutzer of Thornton, Colorado, Aaron Tarnutzer of St. Ignace, Adam Tarnutzer of St. Ignace, Ashley Moore of Negaunee, Heather Moore of Negaunee, and Andrew Tarnutzer of Phoenix; and one great-granddaughter, Brianna Rae Tarnutzer, daughter of Raymond Tarnutzer. He is also survived by one sister and her family, Helen M. and Robert Bos of Manton; one half-brother, James "JD" Tarnutzer of LaCrosse, Wisconsin; and two half-sisters, Elaine Tarnutzer of Madison, Wisconsin and Elizabeth "Betty" Parkyn (nee Tarnutzer) of Stoddard, Wisconsin, and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura "Lolly" Tarnutzer; his daughter, Joyce Ann Tarnutzer; and one stepbrother, Roland Tarnutzer of Janesville, Wisconsin.

Amemorial service, followed by a luncheon, was held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 21, at St. Ignace United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jim Balfour officiating. Interment will be beside his wife at Gros Cap cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Ignace United Methodist Church.

Christian Funeral Home of Cheboygan assisted the family.

Marion Martin

Marion C. Martin, 76, of Grand Marais, died Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at the Schoolcraft County Medical Care Facility in Manistique, where she had lived for three years.
