Milton G. Becker

IRON MOUNTAIN - Milton G. Becker, 88, of Breitung Township and Florida, passed away at his winter home in Riviera Beach, Fla. on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007.

He was born Nov. 23, 1918, in Iron Mountain, and was adopted in his infancy by Florence and Arnold Becker. He attended the Deer Lake School, the Twin Falls school, and graduated from Kingsford High School in 1936. While attending Kingsford, he participated in football and track, was a member of the student council and the National Honor Society. He graduated from Western Michigan University in 1941.

He met his future wife June (Luba) at this time and they spent 64 wonderful years together. She preceded him in death in January 2006.

He accepted a teaching and coaching position at Crystal Falls, which was interrupted by World War II. He served in the ITO while attached to the 28th Infantry Division, seeing action from St. Lo to beyond the Rhine.

He returned to his teaching/coaching position from 1946-1948. Milt served as sanitarian for the Dickinson-Iron Health Department for almost 14 years in the 1950s and 1960s.

In the meantime as a pastime, he operated the Hiawathaland Scenic River Cruise on the Menominee River and served a term as president of the Dickinson County Tourist Association In 1969. He was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a district director, serving the U.P. He retired from this position in 1981. From 1966-1969, he was employed by William and Bros Co. as a right-of-way agent during the construction of a natural gas pipeline from Calgary to Toronto via Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Milt and June spent the next 25 winters in Riviera Beach and the summers at their cottage on Spring Lake.

He is survived by three children, Wayne (Mary Beth) of Durham, N.C., Kay SanMiguel of Wrightstown, Wis., and Ann Sims (David) of Satellite Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Clyde and Lorrain Luba of Kingsford; a brother-in-law, Edward Luba of Orland, Calif.; a special niece and nephew, Robert and Moira Cowling of Spring Lake as well as very special friends, Douglas and Gloria Sleik.

There will be no visitation or funeral services.

Internment will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.

The Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.

John A. Martinson

MERRIMAN - John A. Martinson, 60, of Merriman, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2007, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.

He was born on April 17, 1947, the son of the late Oscar and Constance (Dodaro) Martinson.

John graduated from Kingsford High School in 1965. He was proud to have served in the U.S. Army from 1966-1969, where he was stationed in Germany. John worked in excavating and maintenance at Dickinson Homes for 35 years on June 1, 2007. He was a member of the Eagle River Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

John married Janice Carlson on Aug. 29, 1970, in Iron Mountain.

He enjoyed spending time and boating at his cottage in Eagle River. He was a good marksman and enjoyed deer hunting. He only needed one bullet to shoot a deer. John was a very talented handyman who could make and fix anything.

He liked to feed and watch the deer. He also liked to watch westerns, especially ones with John Wayne, and The Guiding Light.

John is survived by his wife, Janice; a special niece, Angela (Dylan) Paterson of Ishpeming; a special great-niece, Kiersten "Peanut" Malone; two special great-nephews, Matthew Malone and Dylan Paterson Jr.; one brother, Ted Martinson of California; one sister, Gwen Dockery of California; two sisters-in-law, Bonnie (Bruce) Burkman of Kingsford and Kathy Carlson of Iron Mountain; one brother-in-law, Jack (Karyn) Carlson of Granite Bluff; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Emma Dennis; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Geneva and Clyde Samson; and a brother-in-law, Ken Carlson.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home.

Funeral services will b held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.

Burial will be in the Quinnesec cemetery at 1:00pm on Friday

Graveside military rites will be accorded by VFW Post 3674 and the Uren-Cooper-Johnson American Legion Post 50.

The family asks that flowers be omitted.

Margaret H. Carlson

FOSTER CITY - Margaret H. Carlson, 86, formerly of Foster City, died, Sunday Oct. 14, 2007, at St. Jude's Adult Foster Care in Escanaba.

She was born on Dec. 3, 1920, in Cambridge, Md., the daughter of the late Swan and Helen (Larsen) Johnson. Her family relocated to Michigan when she was an infant and settled in Foster City, where she lived the remainder of her life until moving to Escanaba with her son Bill when she needed assisted care.

Margaret married Walter Carlson on Aug. 3, 1941, in Foster City. Margaret and Walter owned and operated a dairy farm. She was not only a homemaker to the family, she was also an integral part of the farm and worked along with Walter in the farms daily operation.

For many years, Margaret welcomed her children, their spouses, grandchildren and friends to her home on Sunday afternoons, where the bonding of cousins and cherished memories that would last forever, were made. Her bread baking and crepes (Swedish pancakes) were part of the love she gave her family. Margaret and Walter enjoyed snowmobiling and short road trips with their son, Bill. She also loved playing cards, ceramics, sewing, gardening and reading.

She and Walter, with others from the area worked hard for the rights of handicapped individuals with Downs Syndrome. Eventually the reality of the TRICO sheltered workshop in Iron Mountain was formed.

Margaret loved her church and God. The church and its extended family were the center of her life. She was a member of Mission Covenant Church in Foster City.

Margaret is survived by five children, John (Judy) Carlson of Foster City, Esther (Dave) Kobasic of Bark River, Bill Carlson of Escanaba, Steve (Linda) Carlson of Foster City and Marilyn Carlson (Kevin) of Escanaba; 11 grandchildren, Chris (Bill) McMahon, Robert Carlson, Mike (Nancie) Carlson, Dan (Stephanie) Kobasic, Theresa (Dan) Doyen, Nicole (Chris) Elie, Dan (Jennie) Murray, Mohammed Habo, Soraya Habo, Steve Carlson Jr. and Tammy (Mike) Ciochetto, 18 great-grandchildren; one brother, Rasmus (Pearl) Johnson of Foster City; one sister, Betty Kaye of Antigo; and many nieces and nephews including a special niece and her husband, Kathy and Terry Murray of Foster City.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter in 1990; brothers, Emil and Alfred Johnson; a sister, Viola Lysell and grandchildren, Kelly and Eric Kobasic.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon (Central time) at the Mission Covenant Church in Foster City.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 12 noon at the church. Rev. Carl Hammer will officiate.

Burial will be in the Foster City cemetery.

Margaret's grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

The family would like to express a special thank you to all her hospice nurses and to St. Jude's Adult Foster Care in Escanaba, where Margaret was lovingly cared for by their extended family and caregivers.

Maxwell M. Little

IRON MOUNTAIN - Maxwell Martin Little, son of Martin Little and Louise (Sperry) Little, died Oct.12, 2007, at 86 years of age. He was born on April 24, 1921, in Riley Center, Mich. and graduated from Capac High School.

He was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Dolores; sisters, Eileen Fitz and Nancy Stenson, and brother, Dallas.

He is survived by a son, Martin; daughter, Pamela; and grandson, Jason Walrack, all of Iron Mountain; and sister, Shirley Bellow of Marysville.

He enjoyed pheasant hunting and trout fishing, but more than anything he enjoyed being with and helping his children and grandson, Jason.

Max fought as a Marine in many battles of World War II, in the Pacific Theater of Operations from 1942 to 1945, culminating in the occupation of Japan.

He began a distinguished career in the Michigan State Police in 1947 that lasted more than 30 years. Working in many posts across the state, he was characterized by supervisors as a 'crack detective' working major crimes, specializing in homicides in Michigan's 2nd District spanning Detroit to Ypsilanti. He received the MSP Meritorious Service Citation for his part in solving a murder resulting in the conviction of three men in 1967. His last and biggest case in the 2nd District resulted in arrest and conviction what many believe to be Michigan's most notorious and famous murder case known as the 'Michigan Murders' when at least six teenage girls were brutally murdered within two years.

Max returned to the U.P. shortly after this case in 1971 as the post commander in Iron Mountain until his retirement in 1977. He always stayed busy even in retirement buying and selling antiques and working as bail bondsman. He left many who loved and respected him for the great man that he was. May he rest in peace.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.

Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.

Dorothy J. Bailey

AURORA, Wis. - Dorothy J. Bailey, 82, of Aurora, Wis., died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2007, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.

She was born on Oct. 28, 1924, in Iron Mountain, the daughter of the late Richard C. and Evelyn O. (Peterson) Jacobson.

Dorothy graduated from Kingsford High School in 1943. She married Leonard W. Hord on Dec. 26, 1944. The couple owned and operated a farm in Homestead and were the original owners of Western Auto. Leonard preceded Dorothy in death on Dec. 29, 1964.

Dorothy also worked at Hancock Wood Products. She enjoyed snowmobiling, gardening, and working in her yard and loved going out to lunch with her lady friends. Dorothy especially enjoyed hearing from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She married Kenneth Bailey in June of 1969. He preceded her in death on Feb. 4, 2004.

Dorothy is survived by two children, Corinne (John) DiBiasi of Bark River and Douglas (Bonnie) Hord of Aurora; three grandchildren, Andria (Chris) Nichols of Blythewood, S.C., Jason Hord of Reno, Nev., and Jesse (Phoutthalom) Hord of Madison, Wis.; and three great-grandchildren Kalina and Kalvin Nichols and Attalie Hord.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Darren DiBiasi and a brother Richard Jacobson.

Visitation will be Saturday from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. David Snyder will officiate.

Burial will be in the Homestead-Aurora cemetery.

The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home with arrangements.

Dorothy L. Steinbrecher

Felch - Dorothy L. Steinbrecher, 76, of Felch, died Thurs. Oct. 11, 2007 at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility in Powers. She was born in Sagola, MI on Aug. 29, 1931, the daughter of the late Kenneth and Eva (Frizell) Byers.

Dorothy graduated from Channing High School. She loved spending her summers camping and fishing. During the winter months Dorothy built doll houses. She was a great baker and swimmer.

Dorothy had a strong faith. She was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church and she taught Sunday School there.

Dorothy married Robert Steinbrecher at Grace Presbyterian Church on July 14, 1962.

Dorothy is survived by her husband Bob, one sister Leona Alleva of Sagola, one aunt Glenice Ertel of Sagola, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by a son Robert in 1963 and a son Kenneth in 1964, two brothers Donald and Warren Byers, a sister Phyllis Weber, a niece Joan Alleva, and a nephew Warren John Byers.

Visitation will be Mon. from 9-11am at Grace Presbyterian Church in Sagola. Funeral services will be at 11am at the church. Rev. David Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in the Channing cemetery.

Betty J. Peterson

IRON MOUNTAIN - Betty J. Peterson, 80, of N12451 M-95 in Channing, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.

She was born Dec.13, 1926, in L'Anse, daughter of the late Fredrick and Mathilda (Burns) Jones. Betty graduated from North Dickinson High School through the community schools. She worked at Marquette General Hospital in food service for 35 years, retiring around 1977.

Betty married Richard E. Peterson on June 7, 1975, at St. John's Church in Marquette. She has been a resident of the Channing area for the past 26 years and enjoyed going to bingo, watching TV and knitting.

Betty is survived by her husband, Richard; several nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Scott (Donna) Jones and a special niece, Lynn; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Vernon Jones and a sister, Joyce Kirkendahl.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.

Funeral services will follow Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.

Burial will be in Park cemetery in Marquette.

The family requests that flowers be omitted.

Sadie L. Wells

KINGSFORD - Sadie L. Wells, 72, of Kingsford, passed away peacefully on Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, on a beautiful, sunny Indian summer day after a brief illness. Her children respected her wish to die at home and with the help of the Marquette General Hospice program, her wish was granted. Her friends and family were at her side when she peacefully started her journey to heaven.

She was born June 14, 1935, in Goodman, Wis., and is the daughter of the late Helen (Spaeth) and Wilfred Millette.

Sadie attended Goodman Schools. She married Bob Wells Sr. on June 17, 1953, in Kingsford, and they have three children. He preceded her in death on August 26, 2001.

Sadie worked at Peterson's Market while her children were young, and then at ShopKo for many years where she eventually retired. She also was a 4-H leader with her childhood friend, Josie Fetterly for many years. She enjoyed spending time with her grandsons and great-granddaughters and attending their various activities. In her younger years, she loved to putz in her flower garden. She was an avid reader and an exceptional seamstress. Sadie was a faithful Green Bay Packer fan.

She also enjoyed the casino with her special friend, Josephine Freeman and cousin, Fran Hinkley. Sadie also enjoyed visiting with her friends and neighbors, Rosie Gayan and Mary Lou Murray. Traveling to Las Vegas with friends and family was something she loved to do, as well as visiting with her special niece, Linda Pope in Maui, Hawaii. She spent many hours weekly on the telephone with her niece Linda, her cousin Carol Kelley and friend Gene Cudnohufsky.

Sadie loved continuing her mother's tradition of making fruit cake at Christmas for her special sister, Pat. Sadie loved packing her house with her family for food and conversation for every holiday. Her children will be honoring her favorite color lavender with bows. She was a wonderful person and an exceptional mother. She will be sadly missed by all that knew her.

Sadie is survived by a daughter, Cindy (Duane) Wender, a son, Bob (Mary) Wells, and a daughter, Jody (Glenn) Edlund. She is also survived by grandchildren, Shawn Ellis (Miranda Sparapani), Ryan Ellis (Krissa Stenfors), Tony (Missy) Wells, and Jason Wells; great-granddaughters, Ciara Ellis, Breanne Brown, Savannaha Ellis, Nikki Ellis, and Macala (Mac) Ellis; two sisters, Mary Ann Middleton and Patty Ann (Dennis) Gardner and one brother, Raymond (Loretta) Millette; sister-in-law, Carol (Earl) Roland; and aunts, uncles and cousins. Special caregiver and cousin, Fran Hinkely, and special friend and caregiver, Shirley Hughes. A special thanks to caregiver Wanda.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Marcella Peterson, Lucille Olson, Joan Ausley and Mildred (Jean) Jones; a brother, Wilfred Millette Jr.; and parents, Helen and Wilfred Millette.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Kingsford Funeral Home. A celebration of life will follow the visitation at the Disabled American Veterans Hall on Breen Avenue in Kingsford.

Burial will be in Quinnesec cemetery.

James Koelbl

BARK RIVER - James F. Koelbl, 68, of Bark River, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2007, in Marquette County.

He was born Sept. 14, 1939, in Sugar Bush, Wis., son of the late William and Delores (Lehman) Koelbl. He attended schools in Sagola and Channing.

Jim worked in the woods for most of his life, but also worked at Harnischfeger in Escanaba for the first 14 years of his married life. He then went to work for Marvin Nelson Forest Products.

In November 1968, he married the former Gloria Dixon in Felch, and they would have celebrated 39 years of marriage this fall.

Jim enjoyed the woods; it was 'church' to him. He also enjoyed working on old Fords and in his garden, and country gospel on Sunday mornings.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria; three sons, Patrick Koelbl of Ford River and Clinton Koelbl and Derek Koelbl, both of Bark River; two brothers, William Koelbl of Aurora, Wis. and Peter Koelbl of Randville; two sisters, Ruth Koelbl and Rebecca (Kirk) Luke, both of Randville; his mother-in-law, Ethel Dixon of Felch; a sister-in-law, Valerie (Jim) Lucas of Iron Mountain; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Louise.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.

The funeral service will follow Friday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.

Burial will be in the Quinnesec cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Clinton, Derek, Bill, and Pete Koelbl, and Jim and Adam Lucas. Pat Koelbl will be an honorary pallbearer.

The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the arrangements.
