Olive V. Wheeler

KINGSFORD - Olive Veronica Wheeler, 93, formerly of 328 Wilson St., Kingsford, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007, at the Manor Care Health Services.

She was born April 28, 1914, in Crystal Falls, daughter of the late Michael and Emma (Lundgren) Harrington. She graduated from the Crystal Falls High School in 1932.

On Jan. 24, 1942, Olive married Asahel 'Ace' Wheeler in Crystal Falls. They resided in Iron River until moving to this area in 1959. Her husband, Ace, preceded her in death on Sept. 30, 2005.

Olive was employed by Michigan Bell for more than 39 years, retiring on Feb. 8, 1975 as chief nighttime operator in Iron Mountain. Olive was a member of St. Mary Queen of Peace Church and St. Anne's Circle of the church. In her younger years, she and Ace were avid bowlers. Olive was also a life member of the Lady Elks in Iron River and a charter member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Ida Harrington and Mildred Bosco, both of Crystal Falls; several nieces and nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Mary Queen of Peace Church in Kingsford.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. at the church. Fr. Michael Woempner will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Burial will be in the Resthaven cemetery in Iron River.

Pallbearers will be John Jamar Jr., John Girdzus, David Menapace, James Menapace Larry Harrington and Ron Almond.

Honorary pallbearers, Michael Mahon, John Jamar Sr., Roy Jones and Frank Parcels.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary Queen of Peace Church in her memory.

The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home with the arrangements.

Ralph A. Kramer

IRON MOUNTAIN - Ralph Kramer of Iron Mountain passed away peacefully after a year long battle with cancer on Tuesday, Dec 25, 2007.

He was born June 13, 1928, in Sagola, son of the late Ralph and Margaret (Paquette) Kramer. He was a lifelong resident of the area and graduated from the Channing High School.

Ralph will always be remembered for his caring and giving nature and for his strong faith and love of family. He was his wife's eyes in her sightless world, loving and sharing his life with her for more than 50 years. He provided guidance and support and an unending amount of love for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ralph's happiest times were spent when he was surrounded by his family and he will be greatly missed. His faith was strong and his love of God was present in all that he did. He was an active participant in his church and lived his life according to his beliefs. He was truly a good man.

He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army with the rank of corporal.

He married Doris (Rau) on Aug. 7, 1954.

He belonged to and was active in St Mary and St Joseph Catholic Church, he served as the former controller of 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and was active in that organization. He was a member of Pleasure Riders Motorcycle Club and took great pleasure in riding and the friends that he made there. He enjoyed woodcarving, reading and lending a hand to his children and friends when needed. He committed his service to a weekly time slot at the Adoration Chapel for St Mary and St Joseph Church.

He was a production clerk at the Groveland Mine for more than 20 years and in the last several years, worked for Superior Equipment of Iron Mountain.

He is survived by his wife, Doris; daughters, Margaret (Robert) Minerick of Sagola and Carol (Mark) Schultz of Niagara, Wis.; sons, David (Joann) Kramer of Portland, Ore., Brian (Tracy) of Hortonville, Wis., Christopher of Mexia, Texas and Kenneth (Lynn) Kramer of Iron Mountain; grandchildren, Rob (Adrienne) Minerick, Phillip Minerick (special friend, Brooke Spigarelli), Jon Minerick, Sean Kramer, Beth (David) Whitehill, Ben (Sarai) Kramer, Brandon Schultz, Dominic Schultz (fiance, Danielle Lindstrom), Chad Schultz, Miranda Struebing and Jamie Kramer; great-grandchildren, Madison Minerick, Olivia Lindstrom and Trevor Lindstrom; sister, Maryellen (Leo) Hardell of Wausau, Wis.; and brothers, Conrad ( Marlene) Kramer of Sagola, Lawrence Kramer of Surprize, Ariz. and Gregory ( Ruth) Kramer of Iron River.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon at St. Mary and St. Joseph Church. The 4th Degree Knights of Columbus will recite the rosary at 10 a.m. on Friday at the church.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Friday at the church. Fr. Daniel Zaloga will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Burial will be in cemetery Park.

Pallbearers will be David, Brian, Christopher, and Kenneth Kramer, Robert Minerick, and Mark Schultz.

Although we mourn his passing, we celebrate his life and because of the faith he instilled in us we know he goes to a better place. We love you Dad.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus..

Richard C. "Rich" Halvas

KINGSFORD - Richard C. "Rich" Halvas, 64, of 145 N Elizabeth St. Kingsford died Tuesday, December 25, 2007 at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay. Rich was born July 13, 1943 in Stambaugh, MI son of the late Ero and Irene (Book) Halvas. He graduated from Iron River High School in 1961 and lived in this area for most of his life. Rich married Marlene Mylchreest in April of 1963 in Iron River. She preceded him in death in 1988. Rich was a member of the Elks Club and the National Rifle Assoc. He enjoyed going to camp, hunting, fishing, watching sports and was an avid Red Wings fan. Rich especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren's sporting events.

He is survived by a son, Derrick Halvas of Iron Mountain; two daughters, Sandra (John) Giguere of Kingsford and Lisa Halvas (Scott Visintainer) of Kingsford; two brothers, Duane (Elaine) Halvas of Norway and Earl (June) Halvas of Utah; four grandchildren, Travis and Ashley Giguere and Colin and Connor Erickson; son-in-law, Greg Erickson; special friend, Linda Smiltneek; several nieces, nephews and friends; and his dog, Matti.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00pm on Friday at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. A time of sharing will follow at 7:00pm at the funeral home. Burial will be in Dickinson County Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.

John Porta

IRON MOUNTAIN - John P. Porta, 91, of Iron Mountain, died Friday, April 4, 2008, at Freeman's Nursing and Rehabilitation Community in Kingsford.

He was born May 31, 1916, in Channing, one of 14 children of the late Carlo and Clara (Carlevato) Porta. He was a lifelong resident of Iron Mountain. He served with the United States Navy during World War II.

John married Ann Bjorkquist on June 26, 1937, in Iron Mountain. He worked as a stone cutter for Peninsula Marble and Granite for many years retiring in 1978. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church. He loved hunting, fishing, bowling and playing smear.

John is survived by his loving wife of nearly 71 years, Ann; daughters, Donna (Jim) Webb of Houston and Barbara (Don) Secrist of Kingsford; sisters, Judy Mariani of Iron River and Olympia Balzarini of Iron Mountain; brother, Charles (Therese) Porta of Phoenix, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Mark, David, and Scott Webb, and Cari Gunsallus; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain.

The funeral service will follow at 5 p.m. at the church. Rev. James Chinery will officiate. Burial will be in cemetery Park.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.

The funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.

Charlotte V. Rose

KINGSFORD - Charlotte Violet Rose, 79, of 280 Chestnut St. in Kingsford, died Friday, April 4, 2008, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.

She was born Feb. 23, 1929, in Iron Mountain and grew up on the north side, daughter of the late Anton and Ada (Tomassoni) Rigoni.

She married Darrel Rose on Jan. 30, 1956, at Fort Knox, Ky. She and her husband had the opportunity to spend 12 years overseas in Germany while he was serving in the U.S. Army. They also resided in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Virginia before Darrel retired in March 1972. They then returned to make their home in Kingsford.

Charlotte was known for being a very immaculate lady; there was no mess she was afraid to tackle. She also enjoyed cooking, especially Italian food. She enjoyed dancing, but her biggest passion was taking long walks with the love of her life, Darrel.

She is survived by her husband, Darrel; four children, Cheryl Rose (Ken Pugh) of Iron Mountain, Dean (Robin) Rose of Iron Mountain, Brenda (Kent) Aderman of Kingsford, and Wanda (Rick) Sherman of Iron Mountain.

Charlotte also leaves two sisters, Catherine Hilborn of Escanaba and Antonette Dennis of Kingsford; nine grandchildren; Michelle (Eric) Reed, Daniele (Nathan) Ruble, Derek, Dacia, and Devon Rose, Garrett and Caitlin Aderman, and Joshua and Ian Sherman; three great-grandchildren, Luke, Abigail, and Ashlyn; brothers and sisters-in-law, Beverly Hansen, Marlene Towns, Gerald Rose, Richard (Linda) Rose and Fern Rose; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, LaVerne Lindholm.

Charlotte's children would like to express their deepest thanks to their father, Darrel, for his never-ending love and unconditional care he gave to their Mother. In saying for better or for worse 52 years ago, he truly meant it. He displayed 'true love' at its finest.

The family would also like to thank ManorCare Health Services for the special care they gave to Charlotte.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Kingsford Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home and 11:30 a.m. at the American Martyrs Catholic Church. Fr. Daniel Moll will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Burial will be in cemetery Park.

Pallbearers will be Dean and Derek Rose, Rick and Joshua Sherman, Kent and Garrett Aderman, and Ken Pugh.

Lula Powell

QUINNESEC - Lula E. Powell, 87, of Quinnesec, died Thursday, April 3, 2008, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.

She was born on Aug. 20, 1920, in Tipler, Wis., daughter of the late Fred and Kate (Plumley) Schuls.

She married Clayton Powell in Alvin, Wis. in 1937, and he preceded her in death in November 1988.

Lula worked many places and had many titles in her life. She worked at Michigan Manufacturing and Hancock Wood Products. She even worked as a welder in Sturgeon Bay during World War II, working on ships.

Lula was a lifelong resident of the area. She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, and canning. Another of her talents was wallpapering and interior design. She loved to help family members decorate their homes. She really enjoyed spending time with grandchildren, and the highlight of her summer was the family picnics.

Lula is survived by three daughters, Ida (Doran) Osborne of Alvin, Cindy (Fred) Powell of Kingsford, and Donna Wallner of Spring Hill, Fla.; six sons, Bernard (Judi) Powell of Niagara, Wis., David (Beverly) Powell of Kingsford, Gary (Darcie) Powell of Dunbar, Wis., Dennis (Patricia) Powell of Kingsford, Richard (Peggy) Powell of Kingsford, and Douglas (Susie) Powell of Kingsford; a sister in-law, Theresa Schuls of Florence, Wis.; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Joseph Powell; sisters, Lydia Augustine and Lucy Kreuger; and brothers, Henry, Ervin, Allie, and Herman Schuls.

Visitation is Sunday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.

The funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kingsford. Rev. Chad Ott officiated.

Burial will be in the Quinnesec cemetery.

Grandsons Michael Powell, David, Kevin, and Kurt Massicotte, Cray, Brian and Dale Powell, and Tom, Ian and Nate Powell, and Justin Wallner will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in her memory.

The family would like to thank the staff at Freeman's Nursing Home, Dr. Judy and the staff at the Marquette Medical Clinic, and the staff at Dickinson County Hospital for their exceptional care of Mom, and the staff at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home.

Vivian Shogren

IRON MOUNTAIN - Vivian I. Shogren, 90, of Iron Mountain, died Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at Hyland Nursing Home.

She was born on Sept. 2, 1917, in Bessemer, the daughter of the late Frank and Sophia (Orni) Ahola. Vivian graduated from Bessemer High School in 1937.

She married Earl B. Shogren on Aug. 30, 1941. The couple moved to Iron Mountain in 1957. Earl preceded Vivian in death in 1972.

Vivian was a charter member of the First Baptist Church in Iron Mountain. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker, and friend.

She is survived by three sons, Robert F. Shogren of Iron Mountain, David R. Shogren of Kingsford, and Dennis W. Shogren of St. Louis Park, Minn.; one daughter, Linda S. (James) Belisle of Washington, Iowa; one daughter-in-law, Bonnie (Earl) Sexton of Kingsford; seven grandchildren, Lauri (Bud) Duke, David (Mandy) Shogren, Daniel (Angela) Shogren, and James, Beth Ann, Rachel, and Susanna Belisle; six great-grandchildren, Brian, Chris, Tim, and Kelsey Duke and Lindsay and Addyson Shogren; two step-grandchildren, Kelly and Melissa; and many nieces and nephews.

Vivian was preceded in death in 1975 by her son, Earl E. Shogren and grandsons, Steven and Mark Shogren. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Edwin Ahola and a sister, Vienna Rouse.

Visitation will be Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the church. Rev James Belisle will officiate.

Burial will be in cemetery Park.

The family would especially like to thank the staff at Hyland Nursing Home for their loving care.

June F. Selmo

IRON MOUNTAIN - June F. Selmo, 88, of Iron Mountain, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, April 1, 2008.

She was born on May 27, 1919, in Menominee, daughter of the late Joseph and Pearl (Bennett) LeQuia.

June was loved and will be deeply missed by her children, Penny (Glen) Roberts of Greenfield, Wis. and Michael (Cheryl) Selmo of Iron Mountain. She will always be the cherished 'Gramma' of Allison (Selmo) Molter and fiance, Timothy Walton, Peter (Tanya) Selmo and Suzanne Roberts. She was the proud great-grandma of Grace Molter and Joseph Selmo. She is also survived by her brother, Francis 'Fuzzy' (Irene) LeQuia, and nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband and the love of her life, Peter; her sister and best friend, Rose (LeQuia) Sharkey; and her brother, Joseph LeQuia.

June lived in Iron Mountain most of her life. She worked at Perina's for many years retiring at the age of 73. She was active in the Downtown Merchants Association with her sister, Rose. She had a great time thinking up clever costumes for herself for the Halloween parade each year. June loved her grandchildren dearly and would do many unique things for them to have fun at Gramma's house.

June lived a very love-filled life and will leave behind many precious memories for those who knew her.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.

The funeral service will follow at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.
